Nashville Media Notes

The notes indicate that Felipe Lopez has joined the Sounds, but we now know that Anderson Machado is up from Huntsville as well, so that would seem to place the Sounds one over their 24-man roster limit, not that it's of true significance at this time (the Mets may resolve that issue Wednesday in the K-Rod PTBNL situation).

Huntsville Press Release --

Davis’ Four RBIs Spoil Jackson’s Playoff Hopes

JACKSON, Tenn. – Khris Davis drove in four runs for the Huntsville Stars (63-71), leading them to a 6-3 victory over the Jackson Generals (66-69) in the final road game of the 2011 season. With the win, the Stars have eliminated the Generals from playoff contention.

Davis went deep for the second time this season at AA in his first at-bat of the game (113 Huntsville AB's, 15 HR's at High-A Brevard County in 304 AB's there -- Mass Haas). In the eighth inning, he came through again with a three-RBI double that put the Stars up 6-2.

The loss went to Edward Paredes (1-3) who came in to pitch the eighth. He only lasted a third of an inning allowing four runs, including Davis’ double.

Francisco Martinez and Vinnie Catricala each hit solo shots for the Generals off reliever Jesus Sanchez. Martinez tied the game at two in the seventh and Catricala narrowed the deficit to 6-3 in the eighth.

Cody Scarpetta came off the DL and went 4.1 innings giving up only one run on two hits and two walks. Sanchez (4-7) came in for 3.2 innings of relief to pick up the victory. He gave up a total of three hits. Rob Wooten got his seventh save of the season with a one-two-three ninth inning and two strikeouts.

The Stars are off Wednesday and will return home for the final five games of the season against the Mobile BayBears on Thursday at 6:43 PM.

Stars Take Generals Home Finale

Vinnie Catricala homered for fourth time in five games in series

By Brandon Shields, Jackson Generals

JACKSON, TENN. (AUGUST 30, 2011) - The Jackson Generals came up with a few big hits in their home finale on Tuesday at Pringles Park.

The problem was the Huntsville Stars came up with more big hits that produced more runs.

The Stars left with a 6-3 win to end the Generals' home season with a loss and officially knock them out of contention for the Southern League playoffs.

The difference in the game proved to be the top of the eighth inning when the Stars put four runs on the board.

Hainley Statia led off the inning with a double down the left-field line, and Sean Halton singled to bring him home. Zelous Wheeler and Sergio Miranda singled to load the bases for Khris Davis. Davis responded by doubling to right-center field to bring all three base-runners home.

The four-run inning broke a 2-2 tie after the Stars led 2-1 for five innings.

Chih-Hsien Chiang nearly tied the game with a home run down the right-field line in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the ball was high over the foul pole and close to the line. The ball landed outside the stadium to the right of the line. The right-field umpire called the play a foul ball, and Chiang took the third strike on the next pitch.

Francisco Martinez did tie the game the next inning when he hit a home run over the left-field wall. Johermyn Chavez nearly followed with another homer in left field, but it hit the top of the wall for a double. He was eventually stranded on third base.

The Generals tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the eighth when Vinnie Catricala hit a home run, his fourth in the five-game series.

Chiang recorded the other RBI for the Generals when he hit a double in the bottom of the first to bring Scott Savastano home.

Jesus Sanchez picked up the win on the mound for the Stars with two earned runs allowed on three hits and a walk while striking out three in 3.2 innings of work.

Rob Wooten picked up his seventh save with a couple of strikeouts in the ninth inning.

Edward Paredes picked up the loss with four earned runs allowed on four hits in a third of an inning.

If anybody caught the broadcast and the reason for Cody Scarpetta's DL stint was mentioned, fill us in. Gord Ash is normally willing to comment on 40-man prospect injury updates, so maybe Mr. McCalvy will see this and inquire for us. Lee Haydel was caught stealing for the 18th time this season (successful 16 times) -- sorry to rain on the team's victory with that nugget, Lee. Hopefully Khris Davis can build off today and mash during this final homestand coming up. It's pretty much a given he'll begin 2012 at AA to begin his age-24 season, one would think, but we'll see...

Sounds Even Road Series With 7-3 Win

Nashville Sounds

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Nashville Sounds evened their road series against the division-rival Iowa Cubs by posting a 7-3 victory on Tuesday evening at Principal Park.

Martin Maldonado and Edwin Maysonet each drove in three runs on the night for the Sounds (69-69), who got two-hit efforts from five different players to pace their 12-hit attack.

After Iowa took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a Lou Montanez RBI single, the Sounds responded with three runs in the top of the second inning to grab a 3-1 advantage against Cubs starter Nick Struck.

Mat Gamel, Maldonado, and Andy Gonzalez each singled against Struck to load the bags before Maysonet quickly emptied them with a bases-emptying, three-run double to left to push Nashville in front.

The Cubs pulled back within a run at 3-2 in the third inning against Sounds starter Josh Butler, who struggled with his control in the frame. After the right-hander walked the bases loaded with one out, he managed to escape the jam with only one run crossing home. D.J. LeMahieu pushed across the lone score with an RBI infield single before Butler induced an inning-ending double play from Matthew Spencer to escape the bases-loaded jam.

Maldonado extended the Nashville lead to 6-2 in the top of the fifth when he belted his second home run in two nights, a three-run shot off the facing of the suites beyond the left field wall. Logan Schafer drew an inning-opening walk and Jordan Brown followed with a single before both later trotted home on Maldonado's two-out blast, the backstop's eighth of the year.

PCL home run leader Bryan LaHair (2-for-3) bashed his 38th big fly of the year to lead off the home half of the sixth frame, a towering shot to right off Butler that made it a 6-3 contest.

The Sounds tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth against I-Cubs reliever Kyle Smit. Pitcher Daniel Meadows drew a walk to open the inning, moved to third on a Schafer double, and raced home on an Erick Almonte sacrifice fly.

Iowa threatened in the ninth against Sounds reliever Daniel Herrera, putting the first two batters on base, but the left-hander retired the next three hitters in order to end the contest with no damage.

Butler (9-7) earned his team-leading ninth win of the year for Nashville. He allowed three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings of work, walking four batters and striking out three.

Struck (2-4) absorbed the loss for Iowa after giving up six runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 frames of action.

The teams continue the series with another 6:35 p.m. meeting on Wednesday evening. Right-hander Mike Fiers (6-0, 1.42), a winner in six of his first eight starts, will man the bump for the Sounds and face Iowa right-hander Jay Jackson (7-13, 4.57).

Nashville Box Score

Maldonado finished 2-4 with three RBI. Schafer had two walks & two hits, including a double; Gonzalez also went 2-3 with two walks. Caleb Gindl had two hits with one double; Brown had two hits as well.

Meadows worked 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Hererra worked around two hits to complete the scoreless 9th.

Nashville Play-by-Play

The Sounds were up 3-2 coming into the 5th inning, and the three runs they plated here wound up being the decisive blow in the game:

Final (game one): @Brevard County 1, Clearwater 0

'Tees walk-off with seven-inning win

Second game of twinbill delayed until Wednesday

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. -- Following a two-hour rain delay, the Brevard County Manatees defeated the Clearwater Threshers 1-0 in seven innings, on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium, on a walk-off fielding error.

The second game of Tuesday's scheduled doubleheader was postponed to Wednesday, due to inclement weather.

Eric Marzac got the spot start for the 'Tees and allowed one run and one hit in 3 1/3 shutout innings.

Brevard County (57-75 overall, 30-32 second half) had no answer for Clearwater's Julio Rodriguez, who shut out the Manatees for six innings and struck out 10.

Evan Crawford relieved Marzac and ran into trouble in the sixth as he allowed back-to-back two-out singles. Jon Pokorny then came on and with runners on first and second and was able to get Cesar Hernandez to ground into a force out and end the threat.

The Manatees were finally able to get something going in the bottom of the seventh off of Clearwater's (73-59, 34-29) Andy Loomis.

Hunter Morris led off the inning with a single to right and then Kentrail Davis was hit by a pitch on his hand, while attempting to bunt.

Chuck Caufield laid down a successful sacrifice bunt, to move Morris and Davis to second and third base, respectively.

Loomis then intentionally walked Scott Krieger to get to Shawn Zarraga. The moved paid off as Zarraga flew out to right field.

Josh Prince then stepped up and grounded a ball to shortstop, that went right between the legs of Alan Schoenberger and allowed Morris to score the winning run.

Brevard County managed just two hits in the win as Scooter Gennett doubled in the third and the seventh-inning single by Morris.

The Manatees and Threshers will close out their three-game series with a doubleheader on Wednesday, beginning at 5:05 p.m. Both games will be seven-inning contests.

Home schedule ends with soggy loss

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Cedar Rapids played the final game of the 2011 season at Time Warner Cable Field in a steady rain on Tuesday night. The Kernels prevailed with a 6-3 victory over the Rattlers.

Wisconsin (66-68 overall, 28-36 second half) manufactured a run in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead. Carlos Gomez reached on a bunt single to start the frame. Nick Shaw's sacrifice bunt moved Gomez to second base. TJ Mittelstaedt knocked in Gomez with a single.

The Kernels (59-75, 27-37) took the lead in the top of the second. Marcus Nidiffer and Jarrod Parks reached on consecutive singles with one out. A wild pitch by Rattlers starting pitcher Matt Miller moved both runners up a base. Jean Almanzar tied the game with an RBI grounder. Drew Martinez put Cedar Rapids in front 2-2.

The Rattlers took advantage of a bout of wildness on the part of Kernels starter Justin LaTempa. The Cedar Rapids righty retired the first two Wisconsin batters he faced in the bottom of the third. Shaw, Mittelstaedt, and Nick Ramirez all drew walks to load the bases. Cody Hawn drew the fourth straight free pass to force in Shaw to tied the game 2-2.

Cedar Rapids went back in front in the top of the sixth. Nidifer doubled with two outs to drive in Jeremy Cruz from second base and the Kernels had a 3-2 lead.

The Kernels tacked on three runs in the top of the ninth inning against Rattlers reliever Stosh Wawrzasek. Martinez started the inning with a single. He stole second and went to third on a throwing error. Rolando Gomez singled in Martinez. Justin Bass followed with an RBI double. A sacrifice fly by Ricky Alvarez scored Bass later in the inning for a 6-2 lead.

Wisconsin mounted a rally with two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the ninth inning against Manny Correa. Reggie Keen singled. Shaw drew a walk. Mittelstaedt drove in Keen with a double. But, Correa got the final out with the tying run at the plate to preserve the win for Cedar Rapids.

Gomez played seven innings in the final game of his major league rehab assignment with the Rattlers. He went 1-for-3 on Tuesday night. Gomez was 4-for-12 with three stolen bases and three runs scored in his four games with Wisconsin.

The loss officially dropped the Rattlers out of playoff contention. The Rattlers had trailed Kane County for the second half Wild Card in the Western Division by six games with seven games to play. Kane County lost on Tuesday to Peoria at home. However, the Cougars hold the tie-breaker on the Rattlers by winning the season series. This means that the Rattlers can no longer catch Kane County for a playoff spot.

Wisconsin finishes the home part of their schedule with a 35-35 record.

The Timber Rattler begin a season-ending six-game road trip on Wednesday night at Burlington, Iowa. Wisconsin has Brooks Hall (7-4, 3.88) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Blake Hassebrock (7-8, 2.67) is set to start for the Bees. Game time at Community Field is 6:30pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

WP: Justin La Tempa (4-9)

LP: Matt Miller (6-8)

TIME: 3:08

ATTN: 5,911

Wisconsin Box Score

Mittelstaedt went 3-4 with a double, walk, & two RBI. Ramirez, Shaw, Keen, & Gomez had the only other hits for the T-Rats -- all singles. Shaw also walked three times; Ramirez & Hawn each walked once. Wisconsin's six through nine hitters combined to go an impressive 0-16, with no walks & five strikeouts.

Relievers Brian Garman & Maverick Lasker combined to work two scoreless innings of relief ahead of Wawrzasek.

Final: @Helena 6, Billings 4

Helena Box Score

A strong relief outing from Tommy Toledo & a key three-run homer by Steve Felix propelled the Brewers to victory in their second-to-last game of the season. Toledo entered the game in relief of starter Drew Gagnon in the second inning, after Gagnon had walked his third batter of the inning & fourth of the game. Toledo walked the first batter he faced, forcing in a run, but got the next batter to end the inning. Toledo surrendered a two-run homer in the third inning, but then retired 14 of the next 16 hitters, and didn't allow another run. He finished with a line of 5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, & 4 K. David Goforth allowed one run on two hits in two innings of relief following Toledo.

Felix drove in five RBI on the game, and his only hit came in the form of a three-run blast in the 6th. His other two RBI came via a groundout & via a fielder's choice. Max Walla was 1-3 with a double & a walk. Adrian Williams went 1-3 with a double; Yadiel Rivera was 1-5 with a double. Tyler Roberts went 2-4; Kyle Dhanani & Ben McMahan each went 1-4.

Helena Play-by-Play

Billings took a 3-2 lead after scoring twice in the 3rd. That score held until the home half of the 6th:

Helena Bottom of the 6th
  • Parker Berberet strikes out swinging.
  • Max Walla grounds out, second baseman Ryan Wright to first baseman Robert Maddox.
  • Kyle Dhanani reaches on fielding error by shortstop Juan Perez.
  • Tyler Roberts singles on a fly ball to center fielder Bryson Smith. Kyle Dhanani to 2nd.

  • Adrian Williams hit by pitch.
  • With John Dishon batting, Adrian Williams caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Yovan Gonzalez to second baseman Ryan Wright.

The three runs pushed Helena back in front, 5-3, & wound up being all the offense they needed.

Felix's Blast Powers Brewers to Victory

By Nicholas Allen, Helena Brewers

The Brewers were just 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position Tuesday night, but it was a very big "one." Steve Felix launched a three-run home run deep into the night in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Brewers a 5-3 lead as Helena beat the Billings Mustangs 6-4 at Kindrick Legion Field.

Felix finished the night with five RBI to lead the Brewers offensively. Catcher Tyler Roberts recorded two hits and Max Walla and Kyle Dhanani each scored twice. Walla added two outfield assists, giving him 11 on the season, most in the Pioneer League. Conversely, the Billings defense was not as sharp. The Mustangs committed four errors that led to five unearned runs.

Starter Drew Gagnon went 1.2 innings, allowing one earned run on one hit and four walks, striking out two before giving way to Tommy Toledo out of the bullpen. Toledo (1-5) pitched 5.1 innings, surrendering two runs on three hits and two walks in his first professional victory. David Goforth recorded the save, working the final two innings, striking out three and allowing one run.

The teams meet again Wednesday in the second game of the three-game series in Helena. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

Brewers open final homestand with a win

Helena Independent Record

Helena Brewers pitcher Tommy Toledo picked up the first win of his professional career, Steve Felix hit his second home run in a Helena uniform and the Brewers kicked off their final homestand with a 6-4 victory over Billings at Kindrick Legion Field.

The Helena victory snapped the Mustangs’ six-game win streak.

Helena took a 5-3 lead in the sixth inning on Felix’s three-run shot off Mustangs hurler Wes Mugarian. The hosts were productive with two outs. Kyle Dhanani reached on a fielding error by Billings shortstop Juan Perez, one of four Mustangs miscues in the game, and Tyler Roberts singled on a fly ball to center. That set up Felix for his homer, which sailed over the right-field wall.

The night got off to a rocky start for Helena, when starter Drew Gagnon walked four batters through an inning and 2/3. Toledo came in and walked the first batter he faced, before settling in and going 5.1 innings. Toledo, who was 0-5 entering the contest, won after allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out four.

Billings first baseman Robert Maddox had his first hit against Helena this season, with a two-run bomb in the third inning to give the visitors a 3-2 lead. It was Maddox’s 12th home run of the season.

Felix, playing at the DH spot, led the Brewers with five RBIs and a run scored. Roberts was the only Helena player with more than one hit, going 2 for 4 in the contest. Yadiel Rivera, Max Walla and Adrian Williams all struck doubles. Half of the Brewers eight hits went for extra bases, though the team was just 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position.

Walla had two outfield assists in right field to give him 11 on the season, most in the Pioneer League.

Mugarian took the loss, with five runs on six hits through six innings, though none of the runs were earned.

Kyle Waldrop led the Mustangs offensively with a 2-for-3 performance.

Sorry I missed this in recapping last night's game -- I usually try to catch things like OF assists... as long as they weren't given as part of a relay http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Max Walla is on of the players I'm most excited to see next season at Wisconsin. He's had a pretty good season this go-round in the Pioneer League, & it was just his age-20 season.
