Braun up to .333/.404/.594, Reyes is at .336

I think next series the crowd needs to do MVP chants back to back for Braun and Fielder.

I absolutely love that idea.

I hate the MVP chant. Not really sure why, it just bothers me.

This is Jack Burton in the Pork Chop Express, and I'm talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there.

Random bunt FTL.

These bunts are going to be the end of me. We've given away 2 of the 4 outs we've made this game.
Be patient, they are more valuable in the playoffs if you are facing studs pitchers, so I like that they are doing it now.

In defense of Morgan's bunt, he beats those out fairly often. Does anybody actually know how often he does?

Not sure but he shows bunt just about every at-bat.

Slight argument could be made that we are winning because of it too. Do I think Hart scores on that double from first ... yeah. But the Brewers bunt the second most of any team in the league and when you are playing close games and can get guys into scoring position for the two guys leading the way right now in the MVP race ... I think it's often a good decision. I actually think Morgan is unbelievably unselfish and extremely smart for how often he bunts/sacrifices.

I have no comment on Yuni's bunt.

Yeah, because if we are facing Roy Halladay we may as well go, "Sure, Roy, we'll spot you 2 or 3 outs this game."

According to baseball reference, he has 25 PA considered bunts this year. 7 have gone for hits. This doesn't take into account plate appearances where he showed bunt and the outcome was something other than a ball into play with the trajectory of a bunt.

Worst case, Hart goes to 3rd base on Braun's double. Then Prince sac-flys him home.

Bunts are useless more often than not.

The Cards had gone up 3-1 in the first but the Pirates are battling back. Down 3-2 now and have runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs.

Also just read the Cards are going to have a AAA guy named Dickson start against us Thursday. He is 8-9 with a 3.73 ERA. So we get Jackson, Westbrook and Dickson.

Productive outs > regular outs. Just saying, players get out more than 60% of the time. Also buns usually get out of double play chances. How many DPs does this team have?
That doesn't mean you should give away outs, and that's what bunts are.

27 outs >>>>>> 25 outs

Morgan 2011:

Split G PA AB H RBI BA OBP SLG OPS GDP SH ROE
Bunts 22 25 14 7 2 .500 .500 .500 1.000 0 11 2

So when its not scored a straight sac bunt he has reached 9 of 14 attempts including the 2 errors.

However, he has failed 9 times when trying to sac to go along with those 11 successful bunts. That looks worse than it really is because if he gets a hit it doesn't count as a sac bunt, but those 9 fails are a combo of these 5 outs and bunt Ks. Also note he has 0 GIDP bunts.

It also doesn't take into account times reached by error, which the drag bunt is prone to produce.

Also, it should be noted that this number can increase his batting average because I believe it gets ruled as a sacrifice if he doesn't beat it out. Of those 7 hits, I wonder how many were with no runners on.

Edit: Nevermind, thanks for the stats.

Its not absolute, good managers understand that you are going to make all of those 27 outs, so if you can pick a spot when you think a player has a bad chance of reaching base and not making a productive out then it is better to bunt. The real skill is understand that there are spots to bunt, however basically no one does this and you either get guys like RRR who will bunt every single time or people with your mentality who thinks every single bunt is a waste.

Today might be a bad day for Morgan to bunt since this pitcher is particularly bad vs lefties, but if Morgan is facing Roy Halladay I say you bunt.
