I was at the game today, & Nelson's FB was getting up to 95 with decent regularity*. It certainly looked like a flatter pitch than his 91-93 sinking FB that he was more effective with, but he was certainly popping the catcher's mitt. When he was throwing what I'm assuming was the straight(er) 4-seamer, his command of the pitch wasn't as good -- he was wilder, but he did generate some swings & misses with it iirc.

Nelson seemed to be pretty fired up & intense from the very first inning today. After he struck out the side in the top of the 1st, he pumped his fist & seemed to be very focused and/or talking to himself as he walked off the mound.

* I don't mean it was up at 95 a lot, but when it looked like he was throwing the flatter (4-seamer?), it was regularly at 94 or 95. He was throwing his normal sinking FB more often, of course.

Sounds Drop Home Finale To Redbirds, 7-5

Mat Gamel Homers, Drives In Two

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds closed their 2011 regular season home slate with 7-5 loss to the cross-state-rival Memphis Redbirds on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium in the final of a five-game series.

A crowd of 5,222 fans were on hand for the contest, bringing the Sounds' seasonal attendance total to 335,143, nearly 16,000 higher than last season. Nashville has seen an attendance increase in each of the past two seasons and has reached the 300,000-fan plateau for the 11th straight season.

The loss by Nashville (68-68) combined with an Omaha win tonight moves the Sounds' elimination to one with eight games to play in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.

Memphis outfielders Matt Carpenter and Andrew Brown each homered and accounted for all of the Redbirds' seven runs. Brown (3-for-3) hit a grand slam while Brown (3-for-4) had the go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning.

Memphis began the game with 4-0 lead after Brown crushed a grand slam off Nashville starter Sam Narron deep over the wall in left field. Narron got the first two batters out in the inning before walking Nick Stavinoha and allowing base hits to Mark Hamilton and Carpenter. The grand slam was the Brown's 19th homer of the season and the Sounds seventh grand slam allowed as a team.

The Sounds scored their first run as third baseman and Sounds MVP Mat Gamel tattooed a solo homer that landed somewhere in Brentwood. The long ball was Gamel's team-leading 28th of the season. Memphis added another run for a 5-1 lead in the third inning as Carpenter doubled home Stavinoha after opening the inning with a walk.

The Nashville offense batted around and exploded for four, two-out runs to knot the contest at 5-5. The inning began with shortstop Edwin Maysonet lining a hard hit ball off the glove of Stavinoha in right field for a triple, who lost the ball in the lights. Memphis starter Brandon Dickson struck out the next two batters before giving up five consecutive base hits to shortstop Eric Farris, left fielder Jordan Brown, first baseman Erick Almonte, Gamel, and catcher [Martin] Maldonado. Five of the six hits in the inning went to right field.

Memphis went back ahead for good at 7-5 in the top of the seventh inning. Right-hander Donovan Hand entered the game in relief of Narron and gave up a single to Hamilton and two-run jack to Carpenter, his 11th of the season.

Narron allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks in six innings pitched for a no-decision. Hand (2-6) was issued the loss after giving up the run-run homer in seventh.

Dickson was charged for five runs on seven hits in three innings. Cory Rauschenberger (5-2) picked up the win with three scoreless innings in relief. Victor Marte converted his 28th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Sounds embark upon their final road trip of the season, an eight-game trip to Iowa and Memphis. Nashville right-hander Amaury Rivas (7-12, 5.01) will take the mound for Monday's 7:05 pm series opener at Principle Park. The Cubs will send southpaw Chris Rusin (4-2, 3.96) to the mound.

Nashville Box Score

Gamel: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI (also charged with a fielding error at 3B)

Nashville Play-by-Play

Huntsville Play-by-Play

Ok, in lieu of a game story, I'll let the game log tell the tale. The Stars jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first, thanks to doubles from Hainley Statia & Zelous Wheeler:

Huntsville Top of the 1st
  • Matt Cline walks.
  • Hainley Statia doubles (13) on a fly ball to left fielder Jake Shaffer. Matt Cline scores.
  • Sean Halton called out on strikes.
  • Zelous Wheeler doubles (19) on a fly ball to right fielder Chih-Hsien Chiang. Hainley Statia scores.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard walks.
  • Khris Davis pops out to second baseman Nick Franklin in foul territory.
  • Steffan Wilson pops out to shortstop Gabriel Noriega.

Two singles, a triple, & a homer for Jackson in their half of the inning put the Generals up 3-2. That lead would hold until the visitors came up in the 3rd, when Wheeler socked a two-run shot to vault the Stars in front. Despite a leadoff single & two doubles for Jackson in their half of the inning, the Generals were only able to tie the score... thanks to the relay combo of Steffan Wilson, Wheeler, & catcher Dayton Buller:

Jackson Bottom of the 3rd
  • Nick Franklin singles on a line drive to right fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.
  • Chih-Hsien Chiang flies out to center fielder Lee Haydel.
  • Vincent
Catricala doubles (26) on a line drive to left fielder Steffan Wilson.
Nick Franklin out at home on the throw, left fielder Steffan Wilson to
third baseman Zelous Wheeler to catcher Dayton Buller.
  • With Scott Savastano batting, Vincent Catricala steals (8) 3rd base.
  • Scott Savastano walks.
  • Jake
Shaffer doubles (22) on a ground ball to left fielder Steffan Wilson.
Vincent Catricala scores. Scott Savastano to 3rd.
  • Rich Poythress walks.
  • Brandon
Bantz grounds into a force out, third baseman Zelous Wheeler to second
baseman Matt Cline. Rich Poythress out at 2nd.

Doubles from Haydel & Statia, & a single from Halton resulted in two more runs for Huntsville in the top of the 4th, pushing them up 6-4. The Generals got back-to-back doubles to lead off the home 4th, however, & plated three in the frame. Both teams' relievers shut out the offenses the rest of the way.

The Stars had baserunners in the 6th, 8th, & 9th innings, but couldn't find one more big hit to tie the game. The final at-bat for Huntsville was probably the best shot at rallying back:

Huntsville Top of the 9th
  • Pitcher Change: Stephen Pryor replaces Brian Moran.
  • Lee Haydel singles on a bunt ground ball to first baseman Rich Poythress.
  • Matt Cline flies out to center fielder Brandon Haveman.
  • Hainley Statia lines out to center fielder Brandon Haveman.
  • Sean Halton hit by pitch. Lee Haydel to 2nd.
  • Zelous Wheeler strikes out swinging.

Prince singles on a line drive to right fielder Neil Medchill. D'

    2nd.
  • Shawn Zarraga grounds into a force out,
shortstop Emerson Landoni to second baseman Kelvin Castro. Chuck
Caufield to 3rd. Josh Prince out at 2nd. Shawn Zarraga to 1st.

Four runs later, Brevard County had tied things up. Right back in this thing! Of course, Tampa scored eight in the 7th to salt the earth & ensure victory. But until that, BC was right back in it.

Rattlers bash their way to .500

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers continued their offensive onslaught with an 11-1 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. Wisconsin has won four straight games and scored 42 runs with 53 hits during the streak. The win also evened the Timber Rattlers overall record at 66-66.

Wisconsin (28-34 second half) jumped out to a big lead early by scoring six times in the first inning. Carlos Gomez and TJ Mittelstaedt started the inning with back-to-back singles. Cody Hawn followed with an RBI doubled to plate the first run. Jason Rogers was next and he doubled to send two runs home. Nick Ramirez was next and he doubled home Rogers for a 4-0 lead.

Later in the inning, Ramirez scored from third when Rafael Neda grounded into a double play with the bases loaded. The final run scored when Brandon Macias crossed the plate from third after an errant pickoff throw to first base.

Brandon Macias made the score 7-0 with an RBI double in the bottom of the second inning.

Rattlers starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson cruised with the big lead against the Kernels (57-75, 25-37). He allowed an unearned run in the top of the third inning, but that was about it. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter over seven innings. Nelson picked up the win to even his record at 8-8.

Brewer Fanatic Staff

Thanks to our "bf.net Jedi" TooLiveBrew for all his efforts to recap games for you last night. Both Sessile and I are now East Coast-based. I likely won't have power in my home until the end of the week (if that), and I'm pretty sure it's likewise for Sessile. Thank you, Irene.

Back in the office for now, so I'll jump on during lunch breaks in an effort to fill in.

But TLB has been a huge help all season, and really took the reins for us last night, so my thanks (and your thanks) again to TLB.

Gomez pushing hard in rehab assignment with Timber Rattlers

by Tim Froberg, Post-Crescent staff writer

GRAND CHUTE — Playing baseball at a high-energy level is what Carlos Gomez is all about.

Playing it safe isn't a part of Gomez's game plan, even when he's rehabbing from a major injury.

Take the first time that Gomez reached base as a Wisconsin Timber Rattler on Saturday night. The Milwaukee Brewers' center fielder — currently on a rehab assignment with the Rattlers — had told Wisconsin's coaching staff earlier that he'd be taking precautions and wouldn't be stealing any bases that night.

Yet, once Gomez got aboard on a walk, his aggressive nature took over. He was cautious for three pitches before exploding down the basepath and stealing second.

"No matter where I'm at, I'm going to play hard, especially here in (Class) A ball where you want to teach the younger kids to play hard and with effort," said Gomez, who is rehabbing from a broken collarbone suffered July 21 while making a diving catch in a win over Arizona.

Gomez continued his hair-on-fire approach to baseball Sunday with a solid performance in Wisconsin's 11-1 rout of Cedar Rapids. After going zero-for-one at the plate with a stolen base Saturday night, Gomez went two-for-four with a pair of singles and scored two runs. He also flashed his outstanding speed by stealing another base and racing from first to third on T.J. Mittelstaedt's single up the middle in the opening inning. Gomez also had a putout in center, making a challenging catch over his shoulder look routine.

Gomez is scheduled to play seven innings in tonight's game against Cedar Rapids and all nine in Tuesday's home finale. He expects to be recalled by the Brewers on Sept. 1 when rosters expand.

"As far as physical capabilities are concerned, it looks like he's ready to go," said Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson. "I know there are some timing issues at the plate he's still working on, but he looked good to me."

Gomez met with a team doctor Friday and was given the go-ahead to resume all baseball activities.

"He said the X-rays look good and gave me the green light to do everything," said Gomez. "I'm doing good. There's no pain. I feel a little tightness, a little soreness, but my doctor told me that it's natural. He said, 'You broke a bone, so you're going to feel weird and there's going to be soreness and tightness, but it's part of the process. Don't be scared.' "

And Gomez isn't playing scared. With a sellout crowd of 6,506 watching his every move, Gomez slid into third base on Mittelstaedt's first-inning single and also dove back head-first to the third-base bag on a pickoff attempt in the third inning. He got up slowly after the play, but didn't appear to aggravate the injury.

After departing the game after his scheduled five innings, Gomez went immediately to the team's weight room to continue rehabbing the collarbone through strength training, stretching and various range-of-motion exercises.

"It's a bad injury," said Gomez. "I've come back pretty quickly, but there was a lot of pain when it happened. It was nasty. It's the first time in my career I've been out as long as a month and I hope it's the last. But anything can happen in this sport. We have a chance of getting hurt on every play, but it's part of the job."

Gomez is excited about his probable return to a Milwaukee team that appears headed toward the postseason.

"I'm excited about the way they're playing and I want to be ready to help them," said Gomez. "I think this year is going to be special for us."

Thanks for the scouting report. Do we know if the radar gun at the stadium is usually right-on or fast by a few mph? If it is on it would indicate why he was a 2nd round pick; in college facing aluminum bats he likely threw the 2-seam sinking fastball much more often, thus the scouting reports of 91-93. If this is true it is good to know that he can dial up the 4-seamer to 94/95 if need be, and hopefully the inconsistency he has shown since being drafted is a function of working on specific things during games.

Sorry I missed this until now. I really am not sure about the stadium gun here in Appleton, to be honest. Iirc, though, there have been BF.netter reports along the way this season & last that seemed to agree that it's a tick fast, if anything... and not necessarily reliable.
