Sopranos (spoilers)

iluvlamp

Great lead in for the last season. Bobby realizing what he did at the end was sad. But, for his daughter to have a father he had to deprive a daughter of theirs.

The writing was great tonight. The fight between Bobby and Tony was unexpected. I get the feeling that's what Tony wanted. Should be a good ride.

EDIT: Title. -PF

*Spoiler

-Bobby made at least two mistakes at the laundromat. That's going to come back and get a few people.

-One of the better shot Sopranos episodes. Tim Van Patten is a terrific director - I wish he'd move on to feature films.

-Aida Turturro is horrible actress.

-Did anyone else get chills during the opening credits, realizing there were only 8 more times this would be shown for the first time?

They really did an awesome job building up the suspense in tonight's season debut, not right in your face, just with several subtle touches that preceeded the fight. Everyone has to believe big things are going to happen this season, and while I remain unconvinced, I think those expectations has everyone on the edge of their seats waiting for someone big to get knocked off this season.

The tension built between Tony and Bobby was great, especially pushing Bobby into doing something he obviously wasn't anywhere near comfortable with, particularly after their discussion on the boat about Bobby's father.

While they made some obvious leads into how Bobby potentially screwed up, I wouldn't be surprised if they're setting that up to make everyone think something is going to come of that.

While I do believe The Sopranos is somewhat overrated at this point of the series, this was a nice start for the final season.

If Bobby is so passive, why does one insult drive him over the top?

Granted, this is just fan talk....

I liked how Bobby got the best of Tony, that seemed legit to me.

I didn't like how Bobby, on his first hit, drops the gun like a chump...

seems to me he would be EXTRA careful, seeing as if he screws THAT one up, he'll have Hell to pay anyway...

Oh, By the way, What is Edie Falco? 50? She's hotter than hades...

Ya, I'm that shallow...

I can't help but think that Tony is setting up Bobby to run the family. He finally showed some balls and goes by the code. Yet, dropping the gun is a big problem. I think Tony wants Bobby to be the guy, but the sloppiness by Bobby will be the undoing of that plan.

Tony wanted to fight Bobby. It has to be a test.

At first i was annoyed to see the first Sopranos episode in ages to have a big presence for Janice and Bobby. For me at least, those two characters are as uninteresting as it gets and they've been featured far more than i'd like the last seasons.I was relieved to see how the episode turned out.

First -- I think this thread title should have "spoilers" in the title in case people live in the West or are waiting for Tivo/HBO replay.

I liked the episode as well.

I don't think it is that -- Tony has been busting Bobby for years -- this was an eruption from an accumulation of ball-busting. I was surprised that Bobby messed Tony up as bad as he did.

As far as the gun thing goes -- based on my thousands of hours logged watching crime-drama/mob shows/court TV etc. One thing I have noticed -- is that when the mob executes hits, they often leave the gun at the scene. I would assume that the gun used to shoot this kid, was untraceable and Bobby didn't leave any prints. Plus I think the hit was done in Canada, so it would be pretty hard to trace that hit back to Bobby, esp., when he has never killed anyone.

I think Chris is in deep doo-doo.

Bobby was wearing gloves, so the gun shouldn't be traced back to him. The only thing I could see it circling back is if the rounds used were hollow point bullets, or whatever the issue with Tony's gun was.

I agree with FTJ, I recall other shootings on TV in which the weapon is left at the scene. What will be interesting is if Bobby's ripped shirt comes back to haunt them, as there likely will be some kind of hairs in the shirt, especially since Bobby and Tony discussed the whole DNA issue when they were fishing.

The passive Bobby thing doesn't bother me. As FTJ noted, he's been the brunt of jokes before, and there was a lot of booze involved.

I forgot to mention that I think Bobby is safe. As many problems as there have been between Tony & Janice, remember that Tony smiled when watching the videos of the old-time videos that Janice gave him on DVD as his b-day present. He has taken care of his sister for the most part throughout the series.

Agreed -- I tend to think that Bobby "showed something" to Tony in that fight, in that he could take care of the family -- I don't think Tony is going to do anything to Janice's husband. I think Chris is in the cross-hairs the most.

I thought it was a good reminder of just what a prick Tony can be. Heck, he even cheats at Monopoly. And he knows how to hurt a person emotionally.

Not only did Bobby want to stay out of that side of the business, the job had added resonance. He took out a father that just wanted to be with his daughter, which echoed the last shot of the show.

Considering the amount of liquor that was consumed and the fact that we weren't shown all of the night, I'm not surprised that Bobby eventually boiled over. Years of insults, more sniping, and the fact that Tony can't even play a game without cheating all contributed to the evening.

I'm not sure that Bobby's DNA would be in any database. Up to this point, it doesn't look like he's done anything that would cause the authorities to take his DNA. And there's nothing that connects him to the victim. It's something that could hang over him in the future, but I'm doubtful that it's going to make an impact in the show. It's just another example of the small stuff that hangs over the characters' heads and how it's impossible to escape your past in the series.

I agree that it was a very well shot episode as well. And the Sopranos doing karaoke was pure gold. I hope all of the episodes remaining are up to this one.

I don't know why everyone thinks that the fight was such a big deal. Every monopoly game I have played progresses in the same fashion. We begin arguing about the rules but eventually settle about some form of play. We start out fine, making snide remarks every now and then but it's all in good fun until someone notices someone steeling money from the bank. We try to continue playing, but the snide remarks start hitting below the belt, and after a while someone throws a cheep shot resulting in a big brawl. The winner is the last man left standing.

And if I remember correctly, I'm pretty sure that in the official rules this is the basic outline on how the game should be played. But I know everyone has there own "house rules" so your playing experience may be slightly different. For example, until recently I never played using the Free Parking rule talked about on the show.

As for the rest of the episode, While not my favorite, I thought it did a good job at setting up this season. I just hope that this season doesn't revolve around Bobby and Janice. Not my favorite characters

I love the show, but it's slowly deteriorating. I mean we wait for the season premiere, and we get an episode full of Janice and not much else? I know, I know, they're setting up storylines and all that, but no Paulie? No Silvio? Two or three seconds of Christopher? Disappointing to say the least.

I thought everything in tehis episode was great except for the lack of time for the other characters. But to show all they did with Tony/Bobby/Carmela/Janice they had to show A LOT less of other characters. I loved that Bobby whooped Tony, great way to start the season. And yeah what if those were hollow point bullets? Remember Janice told Bobby to take them out of this guns. Maybe this will come back to Tony? Very exciting.

This was a pretty good episode too, I thought. I hadn't reallly thought of the "Chrissy hates Tony" angle all that much, but I could see it being the case, even though it seems like Tony may just be being paranoid.

*Spoilers, of course

Pretty decent episode, though not as good as last week's.

-The Johnny Sack illness/death storyline was very sudden. Almost seemed like the writers needed an easy way to get Phil into the boss spot.

-It didn't introduce any new storylines, just pushed the Tony/Chrissy and Phil's revenge to the forefront. The episode (outside of Johnny Sack) was fairly predictable, IMO.

-Good job by Alan Taylor on the Cleaver segments. Almost exactly what I had envisioned.

-I thought Paulie's comment about Johnny Sack not beating cancer while he had was odd. Probably nothing, but it could come back at Paulie later.

-Torciano's hit scene was very well done. I haven't seen a hit scene exactly like that before.

I thought the same but it seemed none of the other wise guys noticed. It was out of place. Like Paulie wanted to act tough. Which could be. I'll have to watch that specific scene again to see reactions I may have missed.

Toby nailed it, the hit scene was incredible. Probably the best one I have ever seen in the entire Sopranos series. The NY mob scene has always been portrayed as disfunctional since the series began, and that continues (and will seem to end that way).

Paulie's comments were typical Paulie. There's nothing more to read in to that, I can almost guarantee it.

I still think the entire series ends just where it began: With Tony as the big boss, bigger and better than anything NY has to throw at him. They're trying to make it seem as though he's wavering, but I don't buy it.

Just as a side note, the "Wings" cast has seemed to do well for themselves. I couldn't remember the female actress in that series though. Crystal Bernard??? That doesn't sound right, but guys like Monk and the dude that was in Sideways (and the upcoming Spiderman movie) have made well for themselves, even if it has been a while.

That's what I initially thought, but the comment just seemed extra-out of place (even for Paulie) and more disrespectful the more I thought about it. Perhaps might end up costing Paulie if Tony gets frustrated due to lack of respect from Chrissy and Phil, and needs to make an example of someone.

Paulie has pretty much always been loyal to Tony,i can't see Tony ever doing anything bad to Paulie unless he really really stepped out of line.A comment like he made doesn't seem near bad enough to get Tony irrate, plus it wasn't directed at Tony anyways.
