Final: @AZL Brewers 4, AZL Mariners 3

Nice games from Michael White and Danny Keller. White went five shutout frames, albeit with less-than-sterling peripherals (2/3 K/BB), and Keller followed with two scoreless, hitless innings. Hitaniel Arias had a nice day at the plate, collecting a single, double, and walk. Andres Martinez also had two hits, and Michael Reed and Jimmie Pharr both doubled. Also tallying a double was the Mariners' DH, some guy named Salome.

Five of the seven runs came in the last inning and a half:

AZL Mariners Top of the 8th
  • Pitcher Change: Stephen Peterson replaces Daniel Keller.
  • Felipe Burin singles on a fly ball to left fielder Matthew Franco. Felipe Burin advances to 2nd, on fielding error by left fielder Matthew Franco.
  • Angel Salome grounds out, third baseman Andres Martinez to first baseman Hitaniel Arias.
  • Phillips Castillo singles on a fly ball to right fielder Ronny Puello. Felipe Burin to 3rd.
  • Jose Martinez singles on a fly ball to left fielder Matthew Franco. Felipe Burin scores. Phillips Castillo to 3rd.
  • Luke Guarnaccia called out on strikes.
  • Roberto Velasquez singles on a fly ball to right fielder Ronny Puello. Phillips Castillo scores. Jose Martinez out at 3rd on the throw, right fielder Ronny Puello to third baseman Andres Martinez.

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 8th
  • Michael Reed flies out to center fielder James Zamarripa.
  • Jimmie Pharr reaches on fielding error by third baseman Yidid Batista.
  • Hitaniel Arias doubles (7) on a fly ball to left fielder Charles Jimenez. Jimmie Pharr scores.
  • Jalen Harris grounds out, shortstop Roberto Velasquez to first baseman Jose Martinez. Hitaniel Arias to 3rd.
  • Andres Martinez singles on a fly ball to left fielder Charles Jimenez. Hitaniel Arias scores.
  • With Matthew Franco batting, Andres Martinez steals (5) 2nd base.
  • Matthew Franco grounds out, pitcher Yunior De Jesus to first baseman Jose Martinez.

AZL Mariners Top of the 9th
  • Pitcher Change: Jose Oviedo replaces Stephen Peterson.
  • Charles Jimenez called out on strikes.
  • James Zamarripa grounds out, shortstop Renaldo Jenkins to first baseman Hitaniel Arias.
  • Yidid Batista singles on a ground ball to right fielder Ronny Puello.
  • With Felipe Burin batting, wild pitch by Jose Oviedo, Yidid Batista to 2nd.
  • Felipe Burin singles on a fly ball to right fielder Ronny Puello. Yidid Batista scores.
  • Angel Salome called out on strikes.

Man Fiers is good. 6IP 8k 1H 0 BB on only 70 pitches so far.

Final: @Jackson 10, Huntsville 2

Another dreary Stars box score. Chase Wright was wrong to the tune of ten runs allowed in 6.1 innings. It's okay though--only eight were earned. Darren Byrd did have a nice outing, retiring all five batters he faced, three via strikeout. Remember when he was going to be the next Brandon Kintzler? Remember when Brandon Kintzler was going to be the first Brandon Kintzler? After two days off, Khris Davis returned to the lineup and was the lone bright spot, notching three hits in four trips. Sean Halton did walk twice, which is unusual.

Final: Brevard County 8, @Tampa 7

Nick Bucci fanned six and walked just one in 4.1 innings--great, right? Well, no; as you've guessed from the innings total, Bucci was knocked around a bit, allowing six runs on ten hits. On the bright side, four Sea Cows had multi-hit efforts, including Hunter Morris with three, including a double, and Kentrail Davis with two, including a triple. Scooter Gennett was 1-4 with a walk. D'Vontrey Richardson did not play.
Plenty of line drives given up by Bucci, so it wasn't all bad luck.

Final: @Nashville 7, Memphis 1

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory over the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds on Friday night in front of 8,544 fans at Greer Stadium.

Nashville starting pitcher Mike Fiers (6-0) continued his dominance from the mound, allowing just one run on three hits and no walks in seven innings of work.

Including strikeouts to five of the first nine batters faced in the game, Fiers became the second Sounds pitcher to strike out a season-high 10 batters this season, matching a mark previously set by Frankie De La Cruz on July 23 vs. Iowa.

Fiers is now posting a 1.42 ERA (8er/48.2ip) with 52 strikeouts in his 48 2/3 innings as a starter for Nashville.

Third baseman Taylor Green and right fielder Caleb Gindl both enjoyed good evenings for the Sounds in the win. Green went 2-for-4 with a homer, double, and three RBIs. Gindl also added two hits with a homer and three RBIs.

Gindl got the evening started by belting a solo homer of Memphis starter Brian Broderick in the bottom of the second inning for a 1-0 Sounds lead. The homer was Gindl's 15th of the season.

Nashville plated three more runs for a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the sixth inning. After left fielder Jordan Brown singled up the middle, Green lined an RBI double down the right field line. The double was Green's team-leading 37th of the season, which moved him into a tie for fourth place with Drew Denson (1993) and Brad Nelson (2008) on the Sounds single-season list.

Later in the inning after an intentional walk to first baseman Mat Gamel, Gindl crushed a two-run single to center field for the next two runs [audio].

After Redbirds left fielder Shane Robinson led off the game with a double, Fiers retired the next 20 consecutive Memphis batters, a new season-high by a Sounds pitcher this season. Memphis right fielder Nick Stavinoha then crushed his 28th homer in the seventh inning to give the Redbirds their only run.

The Sounds tacked on three more runs in the next frame for a 7-1 advantage. Center fielder Logan Schafer singled and scored the first run on the ensuing double from Brown down right field line. Green then jacked a two-run bomb down the right field line onto Chestnut Street. The long ball was his 22nd homer of the season.

Danny Ray Herrera ended the game with two scoreless innings in relief.

Broderick (7-6) gave up four earned runs on eight hits in six inning pitched.

The Sounds and Redbirds continue with the fourth game of a five-game series on 6:35 pm CT on Saturday night at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Wily Peralta (2-0, 1.80) takes the mound for Nashville against Memphis lefty Nick Additon (3-8, 5.00).

Just for fun, Fiers also posted an 8/2 GO/FO. 93 pitches, 65 strikes for the non-prospect. Great game.

Mike Fiers would like you to know that he considers himself a prospect.
I believe his exact words were, "Bullpen my (rear end)."

Methinks that as of the next Power 50 he will no longer be ranked lower than Rivas, either of the K. Davis's, or a Scooter.

I will admit I don't know a ton about Fiers's stuff but I remember watching him pitch an inning during a televised spring training game either this spring or last and being pretty impressed. His numbers so far in AAA are extremely impressive...you have got to love 7 IP, 10 k's on 93 pitches??? That is pretty dominant. He is pounding the zone and his opponents are not hitting it. You have to be pretty excited about the kid!

Final: @Wisconsin 19, Kane County 7

Hey, 19! Rattlers crack Cougars 19-7

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Kane County Cougars 19-7 on Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field. Nick Ramirez homered and drove in five runs while TJ Mittelstaedt scored five times to lead the Timber Rattlers offense.

Wisconsin (64-66 overall, 26-34 second half) scored six times in the first inning against Cougars starting pitcher Santiago Garrido. The first three batters of the inning reached to load the bases. Then, Ramirez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. A walk to Chad Stang reloaded the bases. A walk to Brandon Macias forced in a run to make the score 2-0.

Reggie Keen was next and he singled to right to drive in two runs. The throw went into third, but it was late to get Macias. Then, third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert tried to get Keen, who was headed to second base. The throw from Cuthbert went back into right field and both Macias and Keen scored on the play.

Another error in the bottom of the second inning allowed a run to score and put the Rattlers up 7-0.

But, Rattlers starting pitcher Brooks Hall could not hold the lead. The right-hander allowed five runs in the top of the third inning on a walk and five hits.

The Cougars (61-68, 33-27) tied the game 7-7 in the top of the fourth. Yowill Espinal started the inning with a single. Angel Franco followed with a home run to right.

Brian Garman relieved Hall after the home run. Garman would toss three scoreless innings and allow the Rattlers offense to respond.

It did not take long.

Alex Rivers, who relieved Garrido to start the third inning, walked Mittelstaedt to start the fourth. Cody Hawn followed with an RBI double. After Stang drew a one out walk, Macias followed with a two-run double. Keen was next and his single sent Macias home. Later in the inning, Franklin Romero, Jr. cracked an RBI triple to right-center and the Rattlers were back in front by a 12-7 score.

Mittelstaedt walked and stole second to start the fifth inning against Cole White, the third Kane County pitcher of the night. Ramirez knocked in his second run of the night with a double.

The Rattlers put the game away in the sixth inning as they sent ten men to the plate and scored five more runs. Keen started the frame with a walk and Joey Paciorek launched a home run over the wall in center.

Chase Boruff, the fourth Kane County pitcher in the game, entered the contest later in the sixth with one on and one out. He gave up a single and a walk to load the bases. Ramirez followed with another double to pick up two more RBI. An RBI single by Chad Stang capped the scoring in the inning and the Rattlers were up 18-7.

Maverick Lasker relieved Garman to start the top of the seventh inning and he tossed three innings and retired all nine batters he faced with five strikeouts. Lasker picked up his first professional save with his Friday night performance.

Ramirez wrapped up the scoring in the game by blasting a home run to the beach in right-center to start the eighth inning. The homer was off Juan Graterol, the sixth and final pitcher of the night for the Cougars. Graterol started the game as the catcher for Kane County.

Wisconsin just missed matching the franchise record for runs in a game. The Rattlers record of 20 runs in a game was originally set on April 28, 1996 against Lansing. It was matched on August 14, 2001 at Fort Wayne.

The Timber Rattlers begin a four game series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels Saturday night at 6:35pm. Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez will play the first of his scheduled four rehabilitation appearances for the Rattlers on Saturday. Wisconsin has Del Howell (2-7, 5.61) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Cedar Rapids has PJ Jang (2-5, 3.97) as their scheduled starter.

The final FOX 11 Fireworks display of the season is scheduled for after Saturday's game.

If you can't make it out to the game, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm Saturday's game is also available on MiLB.TV.

Fiers sits down 19 straight in Nashville

Brewers farmhand fans season-high 10 over seven innings

By Andrew Pentis, MiLB.com

The sixth pitch Nashville starter Michael Fiers made on Friday night was laced for a double.

"I was just a little worked up, first batter of the game," he said. "I couldn't really find the zone. After the first batter, I had to find it."

Fiers found it.

The Brewers prospect retired the next 19 batters before allowing a seventh-inning solo homer in the Sounds' 7-1 victory over the visiting Memphis Redbirds.

After Shane Robinson's first-inning double, no Redbird reached until Nick Stavinoha slugged his 28th homer with one out in the seventh.

"I threw him a cutter and left it over it the plate," Fiers said. "He is a good fastball hitter and he put a good swing on it. Solo homer, I can live with that."

Mark Hamilton followed with a double but was left stranded as Fiers (6-0) allowed three hits, did not walk a batter and struck out a season-high 10.

"Just throwing strikes, getting ahead in counts, putting 'em away late," said Fiers, whose pitch count topped out at 93. "I had all my pitches working. That's what made things easier."

The 26-year-old right-hander fell one shy of matching his career high in strikeouts. He fanned 11 over six innings while pitching for Class A Advanced Brevard County against Daytona on May 15, 2010.

"It felt like the game was going really quick -- early swings, one, two pitches to each batter," he said. "I felt pretty good, but I didn't realize until later [how good it was]."

Over his first 10 Triple-A appearances, including eight starts, the former 22nd-round Draft pick has compiled a 1.42 ERA, holding opponents to two runs or fewer in each outing. He was 5-3 with a 2.64 ERA in 22 games -- the last eight all starts -- before a promotion from Double-A.

"I've been doing same thing I did at Huntsville," he said.

Another number bears that out: Fiers has held foes to an identical .189 average at both stops.

Taylor Green and Caleb Gindl both homered and collected three RBIs for Nashville.

Memphis starter Brian Broderick (7-6) was reached for four runs on eight hits over six frames.

Michael Fiers is 11-3 with a 2.09 ERA across two levels. (Mike Strasinger/Nashville Sounds)

If he's not above Rivas, that would be a mistake. He's outperformed Rivas significantly, the only reason Rivas would remain above him is if he had clearly better "stuff." He doesn't. And there's no difference in age, not really. Rivas will be turning 26 soon.

Bet over something you have influence over? No thanks. Exclude your vote and open it up to more than the three of you? Sure.

It is not just being ahead of Rivas (which seems like a lock) that And That said wanna bet to. It was being above Rivas, Kentrail and Khris Davis and Scooter Gennett. Not sure if Fiers jumps all of the last 3. The Power 50 is not meant to be a simple production based list. It is about potential as well and does Fiers potential and upside allow him to overtake thee aforementioned three prospects
