DSL Brewers: First, it's the completion of Monday's Game One vs. the DSL Orioles (good guys up, 3-1, after three innings) and then it's the regularly scheduled Game Two in the best-of-three first-round playoff series; technically, the Cerveceritos are the visiting team in the suspended game and the home team in the nightcap (daycap?); we imagine both games are being played at the Brewers' complex. You would think both games (certainly Game One) would be played out for nine full innings -- we'll see.

Final: @AZL Brewers 6, AZL Indians 5

The Indians tied it in the top of the 9th, but the Brewers scored a walk-off victory in the bottom half. Jorge Lopez, in his third game, went three innings for the first time: 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 4/2 GO/FO; he's walked just one in seven innings so far. Manuel Ruiz allowed two runs in three innings but with a 3/1 K/BB. Andres Martinez had three hits, including his fourth homer, and Alejandro Mendoza also had three knocks. Jalen Harris and Renaldo Jenkins had two each, with one of Harris's being a triple. Jenkins committed his 16th error in 27 games at shortstop. Michael Reed was in right field, ceding center to Kevin Berard, and went 0-5 with two strikeouts.

AZL Indians Top of the 9th
  • Pitcher Change: Elliott Glynn replaces Michael Francisco.
  • Jose Ramirez strikes out swinging.
  • Jorge Martinez doubles (9) on a fly ball to left fielder Jose Garcia.
  • Hunter Jones doubles (2) on a fly ball to left fielder Jose Garcia. Jorge Martinez scores.
  • Leonardo Castillo doubles (14) on a soft fly ball to left fielder Jose Garcia. Hunter Jones to 3rd.
  • Robel Garcia lines into double play, shortstop Renaldo Jenkins to third baseman Jalen Harris. Hunter Jones doubled off 3rd.

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 9th
  • Michael Reed called out on strikes.
  • Adam Weisenburger strikes out swinging.
  • Hitaniel Arias walks.
  • Jalen Harris triples (3) on a fly ball to center fielder Mark Brown. Hitaniel Arias scores.

Final (suspended game): DSL Brewers 3, @DSL Orioles 2

The last six innings were today, and the Cerveceritos made their 3-1 lead from Monday stand up. Orlando Torrez was quickly pulled in the 4th after yielding more walks (three) than he got outs (two), but Eliezer Montano was a breath of fresh air, stranding the bases loaded and tossing 4.1 scoreless innings with a 4/0 K/BB. Carlos Sosa picked up the uneventful save. No Cervecerito got on base more than once, but most got on exactly once, including a double by Orlando Arcia.

The turning point of the game:

DSL Orioles Bottom of the 4th
  • Pitcher Change: Orlando Torrez replaces Leonard Lorenzo.
  • Oswill Lartiguez walks.
  • With Junior Boni batting, passed ball by Deivi Mejia, Oswill Lartiguez to 2nd.
  • Junior Boni grounds out, shortstop Orlando Arcia to first baseman Juan De Leon. Oswill Lartiguez to 3rd.
  • Jhonatan Javier doubles (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Yonki Hernandez. Oswill Lartiguez scores.
  • Hector Veloz walks.
  • Rockny Martinez flies out to center fielder Yonki Hernandez.
  • Junior Taveras walks. Jhonatan Javier to 3rd. Hector Veloz to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Eliezer Montano replaces Orlando Torrez.
  • Dioni Dominguez called out on strikes.

Final: Brevard County 2, @Clearwater 1

Nice start for Evan Anundsen: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 8/4 GO/FO. An 8th-inning homer by Scott Krieger, his seventh, provided the margin of victory, and Scooter Gennett added a double. Josh Prince was on twice with a hit and a walk and stole his 21st bag. Hunter Morris committed his 19th(!) error at first base, to go along with the two he racked up in his brief stint at third.

Final: @Huntsville 4, Birmingham 0

Goodness from Dan Merklinger: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K, 6/1 GO/FO, 102 pitches, 64 strikes. He could be an interesting choice for someone in next year's Rule 5 draft. Sergio Miranda and Dayton Buller were both 2-3, Matt Cline was 2-4, and Sean Halton was 2-5. Halton made some noise early in the year but we haven't talked about him much lately, mainly because he hit .258/.353/.393 in July and was hitting .234/.265/.344 in August entering today. The on-base percentage in July, the only good number among those I just listed, is pretty anomalous when you examine his month-by-month walk totals; he drew almost half of his total walks this year in July alone. Khris Davis did not play.

Remember Erik Komatsu? .235/.276/.309 for AA Harrisburg since the trade.

The Barons actually brought the tying run to the plate in the 9th:

Birmingham Top of the 9th
  • Pitcher Change: Justin James replaces Jim Henderson.
  • Jon Gilmore called out on strikes.
  • Jose Martinez called out on strikes.
  • Jason Bour singles on a line drive to left fielder Steffan Wilson.
  • With Jake Oester batting, Jason Bour advances to 2nd on defensive indifference.
  • Jake Oester walks.
  • Kenneth Williams hit by pitch. Jason Bour to 3rd. Jake Oester to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Lucas Luetge replaces Justin James.
  • Josh Phegley grounds into a force out, shortstop Hainley Statia to second baseman Matt Cline. Kenneth Williams out at 2nd.

Final: Kane County 4, @Wisconsin 1

Eric Arnett pitched well, allowing just two unearned runs through seven innings before leaving two runners on for Dan Britt in the 8th, who allowed both to score. Final line: 7.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 HBP, 8 K, 12/3 GO/FO. It's something. TJ Mittelstaedt had three hits; the rest of the lineup had four, though one was a Nick Ramirez double. Mittelstaedt also swiped two bags, giving him 24 on the year against seven caught-stealings.

Chris's recap should be up soon; you can follow a link to it from the box score.

I don't get why Don Money gets criticized. These guys will open up in the majors likely hitting 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, or 8. I like rotating them so players are comfortable anywhere.

Batting Farris 2nd or 3rd while real prospects bat 7th and 8th cost those players valuable at-bats. It's the equivilent of benching them. Hitting 5 spots too low has costed Green and Gindl about 16 AB's a month.

I too was impressed with Arnett tonight. Not so much because of the results, but because of his stuff. Hitters were behind on his fastball all night, and consistently swung and missed at his slider. He attacked hitters aggressively and broke numerous bats. He's now using the 4th different delivery I've seen him with, though this is close to what he did at Indiana. This might even be a bit mechanically safer. He is back to looking strong yet lean again, not soft bodied like last year.

He'll need to prove he can consistently repeat his delivery, but the the stuff is back that make him worth waiting for.

Sounds Lose Homestand Opener To Redbirds, 5-4

Top Three Hitters In The Nashville Lineup Collect Seven Of The Nine Hits

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Memphis outfielder Andrew Brown homered twice as the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds edged the Nashville Sounds, 5-4, on Wednesday night in the opener of a five-game set at Greer Stadium.

With the loss, Nashville (66-66) drops to .500 by the first time since August 9 and now trails division-leading Omaha by 8.5 games in the PCL American Northern Division. Nashville has now played in 50 one-run games (23-27), the second-most in the league behind Fresno (51). The 27 one-run defeats co-lead the PCL with Tucson.

The first three batters of the Nashville lineup had seven of the nine hits in the loss. Center fielder Logan Schafer reached base four times with three hits and a hit-by-pitch, while left fielder Caleb Gindl and second baseman Eric Farris each added two hits.

Catcher Martin Maldonado went hitless with a sacrifice fly to snap his nine-game hitting streak.

Back-to-back jacks from Memphis' Matt Carpenter and Brown gave the Redbirds a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. It was the first time an opponent has hit back-to-back homers off Sounds pitching this season. Cole Garner and Jay Payton for Colorado Springs were the last two players to homer back-to-back, both off Sam Narron in the third inning on August 19, 2010.

The Sounds plated their first run in the second frame as first baseman Mat Gamel singled to start the inning. Gamel moved to second on a groundout and scored on an Edwin Maysonet groundout combined with a throwing error by Memphis first baseman Mark Hamilton.

The Redbirds scored two more runs in the next frame for a 4-1 advantage. Adron Chambers was issued an inning-opening walk from starting pitcher Amaury Rivas, and moved to third on infield single from Shane Robinson combined with a throwing error by Farris. During the ensuing Tyler Greene at-bat, Rivas tossed a wild pitch that allowed Robinson to advance to second base and then balked home Chambers from third base. Hamilton concluded the wild inning with a deep sacrifice fly to left field that scored Robinson.

Nashville scored three runs to knot the contest at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Schafer singled, moved to third on a Gindl double, and scored the first run as Farris singled to right field. Third baseman Taylor Green then scored Gindl from second with his 34th double of the season, which tied the slugger with Scott Bradley (1973) for the 10th-most two-baggers in as season in Sounds history. Maldonado tied the game with a sacrifice fly to score Farris from third base.

The game remain tied until Brown tattooed his 18th homer of the season in the top of the eighth inning off reliever Donovan Hand, a solo shot over the wall in left field.

Both starting pitchers took home no decisions on the evening. Rivas surrendered four runs on six hits while fanning six in five innings pitched. Memphis starter Adam Ottavino gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits in five innings.

Reliever Donovan Hand (2-5) tossed a season-high three innings pitched. The right-hander threw two scoreless innings before giving up the game-winning long ball to Brown for the loss.

Pete Parise (2-1) tossed two scoreless innings for the win. Victor Marte converted his PCL-leading 26th save by converting the final four outs of the contest.

The Sounds and cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds will continue their five-game series at 7:05 pm CT on Thursday night at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Josh Butler (8-7, 4.99) will toe the rubber against Memphis right-hander Maikel Cleto (4-2, 3.58).

DSL Brewers with Game Two on Thursday now, Game Three Friday if necessary.

It also appears that if the Brewers complete the sweep Thursday, the second round series would begin on Friday at the 52-18 Angels.

The Brewers nemesis, the Marineritos, also won Wednesday, 8-1 over the Cubs #2 (Cuberitos-dos?) squad.

Kane County spoils Wisconsin's homecoming

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Kane County Cougars stayed on pace for the post-season with a 4-1 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Wednesday night at Time Warner Cable Field. The Rattlers, back home after a seven game road trip, received a solid start from Eric Arnett, but the Cougars had enough for the win.

Kane County (61-66 overall, 33-25 second half) scored two unearned runs in the first inning. Angel Franco reached on a single to start the game. Geulin Beltre was next and he sent a grounder right back to the mound. Arnett fielded the ball cleanly, but was inaccurate with his throw to second. Instead of a double play for two outs, the Cougars had runners on first and second with no outs.

Arnett struck out the next batter. Then, Cheslor Cuthbert singled to right to get Franco home. An error on the play allowed Beltre to score for a 2-0 lead.

Arnett hit the next batter to put runners on first and second with one out. But he struck out the next two batters and started a streak of 11 straight batters set down.

The Rattlers (62-66, 24-34) came back with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Jason Rogers doubled in a run with two outs and Wisconsin was down a run.

Wisconsin threatened to tie the game later. Nick Shaw and T.J. Mittelstaedt each singled to start the sixth. But, an unsuccessful sacrifice bunt attempt and an inning ending double play kept the Rattlers off the scoreboard.

Nick Ramirez doubled to start the bottom of the seventh inning, but he was left stranded there when the inning ended.

Arnett retired the first two batters in the top of the eighth inning, but gave up a single and hit a batter to put two runners on base. That ended his night.

Dan Britt came out of the Rattlers bullpen to face Kevin David and threw a wild pitch to move each runner into scoring position. Then, David singled to left and drove in both runners for a 4-1 lead.

Arnett tossed 7-2/3 innings, allowed four runs (two earned), and struck out eight batters.

The Rattlers put two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, but could not mount more of a rally. Nick Rogers came on in the bottom of the ninth and retired Wisconsin in order for his seventh save of the season.

Game two of the three game series is Thursday night at 7:05 PM. Matt Miller (5-7, 4.64) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Kane County has Leondy Perez (7-11, 3.23) as their scheduled starter.

Thursday is a Thirsty Thursday which means that 22 ounce Pepsi products and 16 ounce Miller products are available for $2. Redeem a Thursday night game ticket at Slugger's, located inside Super Bowl on Northland Avenue, for a chance to win great prizes from Miller Lite.

You will want to see the Ghost Riders in action at the Thursday's game. The Ghost Riders are monkeys - dressed as cowboys - riding dogs to herd sheep. Do not miss their first ever appearance at Time Warner Cable Field! And wear your cowboy boots and cowboy hats for Country & Western Night.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, you can tune into the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45 PM.
