Wily Peralta's looking good

prophet
Melvin only said Jungman could make the majors this year because the writer asked him the same question 3 times. The writer wanted to write it, so Melvin went with it. Doug had no plans to put Jungman on a haphazard fast track.

I think that Melvins' main point was that signing early can get you to the big leagues and the big money quicker

And if Melvin thinks this he is completely wrong, especially with pitchers. The flame out rate is too high to not get every penny you can in a signing bonus. If that means you start your professional career a couple months late, so be it.
I said all of this in my post, the players have all the right in the world to negotiate for every dollar they can get. Maybe I should have left out the second part of the sentence but it would (IMO) benefit the majority of players to get their feet wet the season they are drafted. For most players it is a big lifestyle change where they move to Boondocks Monatana away from all friends and family for the first time ever. It can't hurt to give them a 4-5 month window to get used to that, let them go where they go next season and so on.

edit: I have no idea where Monatana is but I am willing to bet it is farther away than Montana.

back to the idea of dealing Wolf or Marcum. Why downgrade your rotation? Peralta is--in all likelihood--not going to outperform those guys in 2012. So why intentionally downgrade your rotation now that it's a strength? Why give up depth?

It's as crazy as when people will claim we're letting Taylor Green, Caleb Gindl, or Mat Gamel rot in AAA. We own their rights in the minors, and it's too bad for them they don't have MLB jobs waiting for them...but it's a good sign that we have depth.

Why give up depth? Because starters impact your record more than back-ups do. Would Peralta and a good SS add up to more WAR than Marcum and a bad SS? I think so, plus we'd still have depth with Estrada and Fiers. A team needs to maximise it's assets. Marcum is a year away from leaving as a FA. Hopefully the SS we aquire is a long term solution.

X, I want to explore signing Greinke and Marcum. We don't know their level of interest. For instance, what if Marcum loves Milwaukee and wants to sign? I understand your point, but my first attempt at upgrading the shortstop position would be through trading McGehee and/or Hart. I'd also look at free agency, and if a decent rental for one year is available, I'm fine with that.
