Final: @AZL Rangers 7, AZL Brewers 2

Will West had a 5/1 K/BB in four innings, but allowed seven hits, including two homers, and five runs. Only two of those runs were earned, though; the Brewers committed four errors in total. Jose Garcia had three of the team's eight hits, including a double and a triple for the second day in a row. Andres Martinez added a single and a double, and, continuing the Dominican theme, Ronny Puello even got another hit to get himself on the interstate (.106). Kevin Berard committed his fourth error in his ninth game at shortstop.

Final: @Huntsville 5, Birmingham 2

Michael Bowman was about as good as you can be without striking literally anyone out, allowing two runs in seven innings. Rob Wooten and Pretty Good Bad Santo Manzanillo each pitched a scoreless inning of relief; Manzanillo allowed two baserunners but also fanned two. Zelous Wheeler and Brock Kjeldgaard each picked up three hits, and Lee Haydel had two. Khris Davis: 0-3, walk, .204 batting average.

Bowman being Bowman:

Birmingham Top of the 5th
  • Seth Loman walks.
  • Kenneth Williams walks. Seth Loman to 2nd.

Final: @Omaha 5, Nashville 2

Nashville Sounds

PAPILLION, Neb - The Nashville Sounds closed out their road trip with a 5-2 loss to the division-leading Omaha Storm Chasers on Tuesday evening at Werner Park.

With the loss, Nashville (66-65) split the series with Omaha and lost the season series between the clubs by an 11-5 margin.

Omaha starting pitcher Sean O'Sullivan (8-2) recorded his best pitching performance of the season for the Storm Chasers. The right-hander tossed seven scoreless frames while striking out eight and walking none for the victory. It was also his sixth quality start in his last seven outings.

Nashville designated hitter Erick Almonte and right fielder Caleb Gindl each had two hits in the loss.

Omaha scored their first run in the first inning as Storm Chasers center fielder Jarrod Dyson hit a leadoff triple to start the contest. The next batter, left fielder David Lough, then hit a deep sacrifice fly to center to plate Dyson.

Sounds starter Sam Narron settled down until Omaha got to him in the fifth inning for three runs to extend the lead to 4-0. Second baseman Kurt Mertins singled, followed by Dyson reaching on a fielding error by Narron. Former Sound and current Storm Chasers right fielder Lorenzo Cain then jacked a three-run homer to left field, his 16th of the season.

The Storm Chasers tacked on their final run in the eighth with an RBI double by third baseman Joaquin Arias.

The Sounds broke the shutout bid with two runs in the ninth off reliever Kevin Pucetas. First baseman Mat Gamel walked and scored on the ensuing play Gindl tripled off the left field wall. Gindl scored on the next play as catcher Mike Rivera grounded out to the shortstop. Left fielder Brandon Boggs then flew out to end the game.

Narron (6-6) was charged with the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks while fanning two in 7 1/3 innings. Reliever Sean Green finished the game by recording the final two outs, allowing his only inherited runner to score.

The Sounds return home to Music City to open their final homestand of the season tomorrow night, a five-game set against the visiting state-rival Memphis Redbirds (AAA-Cardinals). Nashville right-hander Amaury Rivas (7-12, 4.93) will toe the rubber against Memphis righty Adam Ottavino (6-8, 5.11).

Logan Schafer was on twice with a hit and a HBP. Taylor Green was 0-4.

Gindl showing off the arm:

Omaha Bottom of the 7th
Jarrod Dyson singles on a line drive to center fielder Logan Schafer.
David Lough singles on a ground ball to center fielder Logan Schafer. Jarrod Dyson to 3rd.
Lorenzo Cain flies into double play, right fielder Caleb Gindl to first baseman Mat Gamel. Jarrod Dyson out at home. David Lough to 2nd.
Clint Robinson grounds out, shortstop Edwin Maysonet to first baseman Mat Gamel.

"...to first baseman Mat Gamel"? Okay.

Final: Wisconsin 8, @Burlington 4

Rattlers get a series split with Bees on 8-4 win
Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers
BURLINGTON, IA – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers jumped to a big lead and held off the Burlington Bees 8-4 Tuesday night at Community Field. Jimmy Nelson picked up his seventh win of the season and was backed up by timely hitting that took advantage of shoddy Burlington fielding. The Bees committed six errors in the game.
Jason Rogers put the Timber Rattlers (62-65 overall, 24-33 second half) in front in the first inning. His double to center scored Nick Shaw and TJ Mittelstaedt for an early 2-0 lead.

Burlington’s defense committed four errors in the top of the second inning and the Rattlers took advantage to score four runs in the frame. Greg Hopkins was hit by a pitch and stole second with one out to start the rally. Reggie Keen sent a grounder to short and reached when the throw to first was high. Hopkins took third on that play.
Then, pitcher Nate Long was errant with a pickoff attempt on Keen at first and by the time that play was over Hopkins scored and Keen wound up at third base. Shaw’s RBI single sent Keen home for a 4-0 lead.

Mittelstaedt was next and his hit and run single put Shaw at third base. Cody Hawn was next and he sent a grounder to first. The throw to second pulled the shortstop off the base on the force play and the return throw to first was wild as well. Shaw scored and Mittelstaedt went to third with Hawn holding at first.

Nick Ramirez capped the scoring in the inning with a double that scored Mittelstaedt for a 6-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, Hawn grounded into a 4-6-3 double play with runners at the corners to plate another run for a 7-0 advantage.
Nelson cruised through the first five innings. He allowed a hit and walked a batter, but faced the minimum due to a pair of double plays by the Rattlers defense.

Burlington (68-59, 23-34) broke through against Nelson in the sixth. Royce Consigli singled to start the inning. Wade Kirkland doubled to put runners on second and third. Tyreace House singled to center to score both runners. Later in the inning, Nino Leyja’s RBI grounder got House home to cut Wisconsin’s lead to 7-3.

Nelson gave up a walk and a single to start the bottom of the seventh inning. He got the first out, but the call went to the bullpen for Casey Medlen to protect the lead.

Medlen struck out both batters he faced in the seventh to close out the inning and keep the Rattlers up 7-3.

Hawn extended the lead with an RBI ground rule double in the top of the eighth.

Burlington got a run off Alan Williams in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by Josh Whitaker.

In the bottom of the ninth, Williams loaded the bases with three walks and a fielder’s choice. Adrian Rosario came on to get the final out of the game and to record his fifth save of the season.
The Timber Rattlers return home to begin a seven game homestand with a game against the Kane County Cougars. Eric Arnett (0-2, 5.91) is the scheduled starter for Wisconsin. Kane County will counter with Jason Adam (5-8, 4.48) as their starter. Game time is 7:05pm
Wednesday is a Bonus Bang for Your Buck Night with Pepsi products, Cher-Make hot dogs, and Miller Beer available for $1.
As always, Wednesday is also an American TV Win-It Wednesday. Every fan aged 16 and older will receive a scratch-off ticket. Every ticket is a winner with prizes from the Timber Rattlers and American TV of Appleton.

Waste Management invites you to show your pride in the championship Green Bay football team by wearing your favorite jersey, t-shirt, or cap for Go Green and Gold Night.

Plus, the first 1,000 fans to attend the game will receive a poster of Nick Ramirez, the current Timber Rattlers first baseman and 2011 4th round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers.
If you can’t make it to Time Warner Cable Field for the game, you can tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. Wednesday’s game is also available on MiLB.TV.

Nelson's line: 6.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 9/1 GO/FO, 80 pitches, 49 strikes. Williams uncharacteristically walked three batters. Mittelstaedt had three hits, and Shaw also reached three times. Chad Stang had an interesting night: 2-5 with a double but also three strikeouts. Swing hard in case you hit it, I guess. Keen stole his 37th base.

Threshers overpower and May gets 10th win

By Caitlynn Timberlake / Clearwater Threshers

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers (68-47) took an early lead and cruised for an 11-4 win against the Brevard County Manatees (52-73) during the last Tuesday home game at Bright House Field. Starter Trevor May had a decent outing and was credited with his tenth win of the season.

The Manatees took the lead early in the first inning when Shea Vucinich powered a home run to left. Brevard received two more runs in the second when a sacrifice bunt plated Chuck Caufield followed by a double to right off the bat of Brent Dean sending Scott Kreiger home.

The Threshers response didn't take long though with a blowout inning which came in the second giving Clearwater eight runs. Travis Mattair scored first off the bat of Jiwan James. Cesar Hernandez, Troy Hanzawa and James all followed suit scoring three more runs during the next two at bats. Cyle Hankerd then hit a hard triple to center which plated Sebastian Valle, Brandon Tripp and Darin Ruf.

This lead became too much for the Manatees to overcome although they did score one more run in the third when a single to center from Kentrail Davis sent Vucinch home for his second run of the night.

Ruf had a strong night for Clearwater and pushed the lead even further scoring another run in the fourth off the bat of Hankerd and again in the sixth with an RBI double from Tripp. Jeremy Barnes also added to the victory when he was plated earlier in the sixth with a double from Ruf.

Brevard starter Austin Ross was charged with hit fourth loss giving up eight runs on six hits in only one inning pitched.

May was credited with his tenth win of the season giving up four runs on four hits in six innings of work. He also continues his lead with eight strikeouts on the game.

The Threshers continue the series against Brevard tomorrow sending out Jonathan Pettibone to face Evan Anundsen with first pitch slated for 7:00 (6:00 Central).

Brevard County Box Score

That was a lot of ground balls finding holes against Austin Ross -- surely several must have bene hit pretty hard; after the 2nd inning bases-loaded triple allowed by Eric Marzec scalded Ross' ERA and Marzec's inherited runners percentage, Eric settled in nicely; Efrain Nieves went three innings (2 R, 4 BB, 2 K) in three-inning mop-up duty; for a guy who skipped low-A, 3B Shea Vucinich's season went as could be expected for a 22-year-old -- three crappy months, something clicks, a big improvement in July and even better in August...

Stars end losing streak behind Bowman's pitchingBy Mark McCarter, The Huntsville Times

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- The night's last pitch eluded pinch-hitter Christian Marrero for a strikeout and Huntsville reliever Santo Manzanillo stretched both arms above his head and clapped.

There. That's it,. That's what it's all about.

An hour before game time, Stars manager Mike Guerrero sat at his desk and said, "We need a win, just to get the feeling of what it's like."

Then, a few minutes after the Stars registered their 5-2 victory over Birmingham Tuesday night, Guerrero was asked what that feeling was.

"Alive," Guerrero responded.

With solid pitching from starter Michael Bowman, opportunistic offense and "incredible" -- Guerrero's description -- defense, the Stars ended a four-game losing streak. They had lost 14 of their last 19 this month, seven of those by two runs or fewer.

Brock Kjeldgaard and Zelous Wheeler both had three hits for Huntsville and Khris Davis, Steffan Wilson, Anderson DeLaRosa and Lee Haydel each drove in runs.

Huntsville, last in the Southern League North, is hardly alive when it comes to postseason chances, but Guerrero noted the importance of the final two weeks for players' futures.

"The last impression will stick in your mind," he said. "It's the dog days, but you're competing for a job. Every day you go on the field, you're competing for a job. You need to make that last impression. You never know who's watching."

Or ... maybe you do. Among the announced crowd of 658 were Brewers' brass Gord Ash and Dick Groch.

Making a good last impression is Bowman, who made a good enough first impression to be selected for the Southern League All-Star Game. However, he went from May 28 until Aug. 2 between victories. He has won four of five decisions in August and improved to 6-10.

Pitching coach John Curtis said Bowman has improved his command and his sinking fastball is working more effectively. But it's the mental aspect that's just as key.

"He's just taking it easy, not trying to overthrow," Curtis said. "He's finishing the way he started. In between, he scuffled. His last three times out, he's been good. Hopefully it'll sink in and he'll say 'I can be successful.'"

Bowman is a microcosm of the Stars, who were eight games over .500 in late April. If his teammates can join him in making a good last impression, what a feeling it could be.

Nashville Sounds still in division chase

Last homestand begins Wednesday night

by Greg Sullivan | The Tennessean

Three players promoted from Huntsville who have remained hot in Nashville have been keys to the Sounds turning around their season in the second half.

New center fielder Logan Schafer and starting pitchers Mike Fiers and Wily Peralta have helped Nashville go 25-16 since the All-Star break.

Nashville opens the final homestand of the season tonight against the Memphis Redbirds.

The Sounds struggled out of the gate this season with a 9-22 record, but they have the second-best record in the Pacific Coast League since the All-Star break. Nashville (66-65) and Memphis (69-61) are mathematically alive to win the PCL American North, but they are likely playing for second place behind Omaha (73-57) with eight games remaining.

“The guys in the clubhouse tell me how it works around here and, basically, I try to stay quiet,” said Schafer, who has quickly established himself as the leadoff hitter the Sounds lacked. “I’m trying to fit in and ... help us win.”

Schafer, 24, has played in 31 games for Nashville since his call-up from Huntsville on July 22 and was hitting .336 with five homers and 23 RBI.

“I feel very comfortable there at the top of the order,” Schafer said. “I know my job. I need to get on base for the people behind me and make things happen. Hopefully, giving a little spark to lead off innings will help us continue to put up some runs.”

“Throughout the year we’ve tried everybody (at leadoff),” said Sounds Manager Don Money. “I’m happy to have him.”

Schafer can cover a lot of ground in the outfield, as well, and he made ESPN’s highlights Saturday by chasing down a fly ball that bounced off his glove and then his head and turned into a triple play.

Right-hander Fiers, 26, is 5-0 in seven starts with a 1.44 ERA in his first 43 2/3 Triple-A innings. He has fought finger inflammation problems since joining the Sounds, but his hot streak has persisted.

“I’ve just been doing what I’ve been doing all year,” Fiers said. “Every level you go up, the hitters are going to be better every time, but as long as you keep your pitches down, you’re going to be OK.

“I’m trying to pitch a complete game. If I’ve got two strikes, I’m trying to put the guy away, but early in the count I’m trying to get ground balls.”

Fiers is scheduled to start Friday.

The Helena Independent Record summarizes the Brewers' road game --

The Ogden Raptors scored four runs over the seventh and eighth innings Tuesday en route to an 8-5 victory over the Helena Brewers at Lindquist Field in Ogden, Utah.

The Raptors scored runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings off Helena starter Tyler Cravy, but the Brewers took the lead with a four-run sixth. Ogden starter Derek Cone issued a leadoff walk to Gant Elmore, which was followed by back-to-back singles by Adrian Williams and John Dishon to chase Cone. Parker Berberet stroked a two-run, ground ball single to center to tie the game, then Berberet scored on a throwing error by catcher Andrew Edge to give the visitors the lead.

It would be brief. Ogden answered right back with a run in its half of the inning, scoring this time on an error by Helena’s catcher, Tyler Roberts. The Raptors weren’t done yet, as they’d plate four more runs in the contest.

Kyle Dhanani was 2 for 2 to lead the Brewers, who were without an extra-base hit in the game. Ogden, on the other hand, had five — including a double by Justin Boudreaux, who was 3 for 4 with a pair of runs scored.

Joel Lima was credited with the win following the blown save, moving him to 2-0 on the year. David Goforth took the loss for Helena, his fourth of the season, after giving up two earned runs on two hits in an inning. Alex Jones also gave up two earned runs in just one frame of work.
