Final: @AZL Brewers 10, AZL Rangers 5

The Brewers entered the bottom of the 8th down 5-2. Yes, you're doing the math right--they scored eight runs in the 8th inning.

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 8th
  • Pitcher Change: Kenneth Wiser replaces Shawn Blackwell.
  • Ronny Puello singles on a ground ball to center fielder Jordan Akins.
  • Andres Martinez lines out to third baseman Ryan Rua.
  • Kevin Berard singles on a line drive to right fielder Christopher Grayson. Ronny Puello to 2nd.
  • Michael Reed doubles (2) on a fly ball to right fielder Christopher Grayson. Ronny Puello scores. Kevin Berard to 3rd.
  • Jimmie Pharr singles on a ground ball to left fielder Jeremy Williams. Kevin Berard scores. Michael Reed to 3rd.
  • Pitcher Change: Leonel De Los Santos replaces Kenneth Wiser.
  • Jose Garcia doubles (5) on a fly ball to left fielder Jeremy Williams. Michael Reed scores. Jimmie Pharr to 3rd.
  • Jalen Harris singles on a fly ball to right fielder Christopher Grayson. Jimmie Pharr scores. Jose Garcia to 3rd.
  • Renaldo Jenkins singles on a fly ball to right fielder Christopher Grayson. Jose Garcia scores. Jalen Harris to 2nd.
  • Matthew Franco walks. Jalen Harris to 3rd. Renaldo Jenkins to 2nd.
  • Ronny Puello singles on a fly ball to right fielder Christopher Grayson. Jalen Harris scores. Renaldo Jenkins scores. Matthew Franco to 2nd.
  • Andres Martinez strikes out swinging.
  • Kevin Berard singles on a fly ball to left fielder Jeremy Williams. Matthew Franco scores. Ronny Puello to 2nd.
  • Michael Reed walks. Ronny Puello to 3rd. Kevin Berard to 2nd.
  • Jimmie Pharr grounds out, second baseman Nick Urbanus to first baseman Kevin Torres.

You now things are going well when Ronny Puello, who had seven hits all year entering today, has two in an inning.

I like this thing where Chad Thompson, Michael Schaub, and Joel Pierce all pitch on the same day. Odds are at least one of them will do something interesting, and today it was the Thompson: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. Schaub allowed three runs in three innings while failing to strike out a batter, and Pierce worked a quiet 9th, continuing to make progress in his quest to get his ERA under 9. Kevin Berard, Jimmie Pharr, and Jose Garcia joined Puello with two hits; Garcia's were a double and a triple. Michael Reed doubled and walked. No one struck out more than twice. This is progress, people.

Final: Birmingham 3, @Huntsville 2

RJ Seidel had a very ball-in-play outing, striking out just one and walking none in 5.2 innings while allowing three runs on eight hits. Hainley Statia was pretty much the only Star to do anything with the bat, going 2-2 with a triple and two walks, though Brock Kjeldgaard and Khris Davis did each have a hit. Yay, a hit. Big Brock also threw out a runner at the plate (useless trivia: the runner was Josh Phegley, Eric Arnett's former battery-mate at Indiana and his fellow '09 first-rounder).

Stars’ Bats Stay Quiet in Loss
Huntsville Stars

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Huntsville Stars (59-67) tried to come back against the Birmingham Barons (64-63) after Hector Santiago left the game, but it was too little, too late as they fall 3-2 in game two on Monday night.

Santiago (6-5) threw a two-hit shutout through six innings, striking out six Stars hitters. Anthony Carter picked up his fourth save of the season pitching 1.2 hitless innings.

The Barons offense also chipped in to lead the team to victory. Jon Gilmore extended his hit streak to 12 games, doubling and then scoring on Seth Loman’s home run in the fourth inning. Gilmore came around to score again for the eventual winning run in the sixth inning on a hit by Josh Phegley.

R.J. Seidel (1-3) gave up all three runs on eight hits through 5.2 innings. After Chase Wright walked six batters the night before, the Stars pitching staff did not allow a single walk tonight.

Hainley Statia was the driving force behind the Stars’ two runs of offense. Statia was 2-for-2 with two walks, a run and a RBI-triple.

Final: @Burlington 5, Wisconsin 3

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BURLINGTON, IA - The Burlington Bees didn't get a lot of hits on Monday night at Community Field against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. But, the Bees took advantage of some walks, some Timber Rattlers mistakes, and some good defense on their part for a 5-3 win.

Yordy Cabrera kept the Rattlers (61-65 overall, 23-33) from scoring first. Rafael Neda was at the plate with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the first inning. Neda scalded a shot back through the middle, but the Bees shortstop ranged behind second to make the stop and throw to first to get the final out of the inning.

Burlington (68-58, 23-33) scored three times in the bottom of the second inning. Royce Consigli singled with one out and runners on first and second to get the first run home. That hit was one of four on the night by Bees hitters.

Wade Kirkland was next and he sent a fly ball deep to left-center. Rattlers left fielder Chad Stang ran down the ball and made a nice catch. But, Stang appeared to think that was the third out as he continued to run with the ball instead of getting it back to the infield. The runner at second tagged and scored when Stang dropped the ball making the exchange to his throwing hand. Consigli also took second on the play. That allowed him to score when Tyreace House singled and and the Bees were up 3-0.

Wisconsin would get on the scoreboard in the top of the third. Nick Ramirez scored Nick Shaw with a sacrifice fly to get the Rattlers within 3-1.

The Bees would score two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and did so without the benefit of a hit. Rattlers starting pitcher Del Howell walked two straight batters with one out before being replaced by Stosh Wawrzasek. The Rattlers reliever loaded the bases by hitting the first batter he faced.

Jose Crisotomo plated the first run of the inning by grounding into a force play at second. Then, Crisotomo drew a throw as he stole second. Kirkland, the runner at third, broke for the plate and scored for a 5-1 lead.

The Rattlers offense was handcuffed until the ninth. They had two on and two out with Cody Hawn at the plate. Hawn doubled over the head of House in center to score both runners and bring Ramirez to the plate as the potential tying. Ramirez sent a fly ball deep to right, but the ballpark held it and Crisotomo made the catch on the warning track to end the game.

Wisconsin went just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded ten runners total on the evening.

The Timber Rattlers wrap up their road trip on Tuesday night at Community Field with the final game of the series with the Bees. Wisconsin has Jimmy Nelson (6-8, 4.54) scheduled as their starting pitcher. Burlington will send Nate Long (7-6, 3.22) to the mound. Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

Howell walked five in 3.1 innings. Alan Williams worked a perfect 8th with a strikeout. Hawn, Stang, and Franklin Romero, Jr. each had two hits. Shaw drew three walks, giving him 72 on the year. Ramirez is hitting .146.

Final: Nashville 7, @Omaha 3

Sounds Defeat Division-Leading Storm Chasers In 11 Innings

Peralta Tosses Another Gem For Nashville

Nashville Sounds

PAPILLION, Neb. - The Nashville Sounds plated four runs in the top of the eleventh inning to record a 7-3 victory over the division-leading Omaha Storm Chasers on Monday evening at Werner Park.

With the win, the Sounds (65-64) improved to 4-9 in extra-inning play on the year and pulled back within 6 ½ games of the Storm Chasers in the American Conference Northern Division.

Nashville - which scored five of its seven runs in unearned fashion as a result of six Omaha errors - received another brilliant start from right-hander Wily Peralta and held a 3-1 lead with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning before the Storm Chasers rallied to knot the score against Donovan Hand to force extra frames.

Peralta opened the contest with 6 1/3 hitless innings, retiring 19 of his first 20 batters faced before surrendering a knock, and notched his third quality start in three Triple-A outings this season.

The 22-year-old sat down the first 13 Omaha batters in order before issuing a one-out walk to Kila Ka'aihue in the bottom of the fifth inning. The right-hander then retired the next six Storm Chasers in succession before ex-Sound Lorenzo Cain broke up the no-hit bid with a slow-rolling infield single to shortstop in the seventh, beating Edwin Maysonet's throw to first by a half-step.

Peralta, who allowed one run on two hits while striking out seven batters over seven innings, lowered his ERA to 1.80 for the Sounds during his 98-pitch effort. In his last 13 starts overall, the young fireballer is 8-1 with a spectacular 1.98 ERA (18er/82.0ip).

In the decisive eleventh, Nashville got two runs on an Eric Farris single to break a 3-3 tie and Mat Gamel later put an accent on the victory by crushing a two-run homer to center off Brandon Sisk (4-2), who took the loss.

Gamel finished 4-for-6 on the night and homered for the second straight contest, upping his team-leading longball total to 27 on the year.

The Sounds took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning against former Nashville hurler Jeff Suppan.

Taylor Green led off with his team-leading 33rd double of the year and later scored following catch[er] Martin Maldonado's two-out grounder to third. On the play, Omaha first baseman Clint Robinson failed to catch Lance Zawadzki's throw, allowing Green to race home with the game's first score.

Nashville doubled its advantage to 2-0 in the seventh when Caleb Gindl (2-for-5) led off with a single and later scored on a Logan Schafer sacrifice fly.

Omaha got on the board in the home half of the seventh when Cain legged out his infield single for the Storm Chasers' first hit of the night and came around to score on Irving Falu's two-out RBI single through the right side of the Nashville infield, halving the Sounds' lead to 2-1.

The Sounds reclaimed their two-run advantage in the top of the eighth with their second unearned run of the night, this one against Omaha reliever Willy Lebron.

With one out in the Nashville eighth, Gamel reached on a fielding error by Robinson at first base and moved to third when Maldonado extended his season-best hitting streak to nine games with a double into the left field corner. Gindl followed with a soft liner to right that just cleared the glove of a leaping Falu to drive in Gamel with the insurance run.

Hand followed Peralta to the hill for the Sounds and worked a scoreless eighth before Omaha rallied to even the contest in the home half of the ninth.

In the Omaha ninth, David Lough smoked a one-out double to the wall in right-center and moved to third on a Cain groundout to first that was a bang-bang play at the bag, resulting in the ejection of Storm Chasers manager Mike Jirschele. After Clint Robinson drew a walk to put runners on the corners, Ka'aihue beat out a soft grounder to second to bring home Lough with the second Omaha run of the night, cutting the Nashville lead to a narrow 3-2.

The inning continued as Falu worked back from an 0-2 hole to drew a walk from Hand to load the bases with two outs for the Storm Chasers. Yamaico Navarro blooped a single to right to bring home Joaquin Arias, who had pinch-run for Robinson, with the tying run, but Gindl fired a dart to the plate to gun down pinch-runner Kurt Mertins as he attempted to score the winning run.

In the top of the eleventh, the Sounds pulled in front, 7-3, with a four-run outburst that was keyed by a throwing error by Sisk, the Omaha hurler. After Maysonet drew an inning-opening walk, Schafer dropped down a sacrifice bunt and Sisk threw the ball into right field. Farris followed with a two-run single to break the tie. Later in the frame, Farris scored on Gamel's two-run homer, which sent Sisk to the showers and concluded the evening's scoring.

Right-hander Mike McClendon (5-3) picked up the victory for Nashville after tossing two scoreless innings.

Sounds designated hitter Erick Almonte had his season-best 11-game hitting streak come to a close with an 0-for-6 evening.

The division rivals wrap up the series with a 7:05 p.m. finale on Tuesday night. Left-hander Sam Narron (6-5, 4.89) will make the start for Nashville to face Omaha right-hander Sean O'Sullivan (7-2, 3.47).

Nashville Play-by-Play

Obviously this was the Wily Peralta show tonight. However, Gindl threw out Omaha's Joaquin Arias at home to end the bottom of the 9th & keep the Sounds alive:

Omaha Bottom of the 9th
  • Jarrod Dyson called out on strikes.
  • David Lough doubles (26) on a line drive to center fielder Logan Schafer.
  • Lorenzo Cain grounds out, first baseman Mat Gamel to pitcher Donovan Hand. David Lough to 3rd.
  • Omaha Storm Chasers Manager Mike Jirschele ejected by 1B umpire Jordan Baker.
  • Clint Robinson walks.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Joaquin Arias replaces Clint Robinson.
  • Kila Ka'aihue singles on a ground ball to second baseman Eric Farris. David Lough scores. Joaquin Arias to 2nd.
  • Irving Falu walks. Joaquin Arias to 3rd. Kila Ka'aihue to 2nd.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Kurt Mertins replaces Kila Ka'aihue.
  • Yamaico
Navarro singles on a ground ball to right fielder Caleb Gindl.
Joaquin Arias scores. Kurt Mertins out at home on the throw, right
fielder Caleb Gindl to catcher Martin Maldonado.

Can't say enough about how huge that out was. You know Don Money loved it. Maybe it'll even get Gindl moved up in the lineup... hey, a guy can dream.

Final: @Ogden 7, Helena 3

Helena Independent Record summarizes this road contest

Raptors power past Brewers

Ogden Raptors catcher Andrew Edge homered twice and singled in two more runs as his team broke open a tie game with a four-run bottom of the eighth to get the 7-3 Pioneer League victory over the Helena Brewers on Monday night.

Edge finished 3 for 4 on the night.

The teams were locked in a 3-3 tie entering the eighth, and Helena managed just a walk from Parker Berberet in the top half. Ogden got considerably more in the bottom, peppering Brewers relievers Brandon Williamson and Jacob Barnes for five hits, while also benefitting from a wild pitch from Williamson and a throwing error by right fielder Max Walla in pushing across all four of the the game's winning runs.

Eric Eadington went 1.1 innings, allowing no hits, walking one batter and striking out two to pick up the good luck win for Ogden, his first of the season.

Raydel Sanchez did the bulk of the work from the mound for the Raptors, lasting 6.2 innings after getting the start and spreading out six hits and three runs, though only one was earned. He also struck out three and did not surrender a walk.

Kevin Shackelford started on the mound for Helena and allowed seven hits and three runs in six innings of work, though just two of his runs were earned.

Williamson picked up the loss after lasting just 1.1 innings and allowing three earned runs.

Helena Box Score

Two errors for funk-ridden shortstop Yadiel Rivera, that's 19 in 59 games, plus he's hitting .167 in his last ten starts and .172 for all of August; two more knocks for hit machine Ben McMahan, back in left field...

Nashville's Wily Peralta insisted a no-hit bid was the furthest thing from his mind Monday night. He boiled his focus on the mound to "Get this guy, then get this guy."
Peralta got most of 'em.

Milwaukee's top prospect completed 6 1/3 hitless innings before allowing a seventh-inning run on two singles in the Triple-A Sounds' 7-3, 11-inning road win over the Omaha Storm Chasers.

Peralta (2-0) retired the first 13 batters he faced before walking Kila Ka'aihue on five pitches in the fifth inning. The 22-year-old right-hander then sat down six in a row before Lorenzo Cain smacked an infield single toward shortstop Edwin Maysonet with one out in the seventh.

"It was a pretty close play," Peralta said. "When I looked at the scoreboard, I saw they had one hit with one out in the seventh inning, I was happy. It was fun trying to throw a no-hitter."

Cain advanced to second on a wild pitch and, after Ka'aihue drew a second free pass, scored on Irving Falu's two-out single into right field. Ka'aihue, the potential tying run, was thrown out attempting to go from first to third on the play.

"We were pretty excited," Peralta said of right fielder Caleb Gindl's assist. "The defense helped me a lot. They were doing their best for me."

Peralta, whom the Brewers signed out of the Dominican Republic in November 2005, had extended his Triple-A scoreless innings streak to 14 1/3 before Cain touched home plate. He exited having thrown 98 pitches over his seven innings and struck out seven.

The starter gave up three Las Vegas runs on six hits over six frames in his Triple-A debut on Aug. 12 then rebounded with seven scoreless innings against Tucson on Wednesday.

In his second-to-last Double-A outing -- the best of his season -- pitching for Huntsville against Carolina on July 31, Peralta completed seven one-hit innings.

Peralta has a 1.80 ERA and 24 strikeouts in his first 20 innings one level from the bigs.

"I'm not changing anything," the Southern League Midseason All-Star said. "I'm just trying to keep doing what I am doing."

Prior to Monday, Peralta had never held an opponent hitless for more than three innings. Pitching for short-season Helena against Billings on July 5, 2008, he tossed three no-hit frames, and matched that in two relief appearances the next season at Class A Wisconsin.

The Storm Chasers scored two runs off of Donovan Hand in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score, 3-3, and force extra innings. Ka'aihue and Yamaico Navarro both smacked run-scoring singles.

The Sounds regained the advantage with four runs in the top of the 11th. Eric Farris struck a run-scoring single off of reliever Brandon Sisk (4-2), then scored on Mat Gamel's longball.
