If Taylor didn't come up back when we really needed him, he isn't suddenly coming up now. Sept 1st is probably the time he bumps up.
It's gotta be him or Gamel. Melvin is smart enough to know they need another good bat off the bench for the playoffs

The Brewers really need to jettison 2 pitchers by Aug 31st and replace them with position players. One should happen tomorrow, either Dillard or De La Cruz and the other shortly after. This team hardly has work for a 12 man staff, no reason to carry 13 when on Aug 31st it should be an 11 man staff for the playoff roster.

I think a lot of people saw this coming with Lopez. His lack of effort was there in 2009 as well but his .320 batting average kind of covered it up. I noticed that Lopez didn't get many chances after that game where he failed to run out 3 ground balls. I give Roenicke credit for that.

As far as the roster goes. I don't think that Gomez will be back before September 1st. That gives us the roster flexibilty to reduce our staff to 12 pitchers for the playoffs (should we be fortunate enough to make it). We should keep 12 through August and more than 12 in September.

Not that I think Dillard is worth much to the staff, but could some of those bottom feeder/depth guys have a "bruised big toe" or something starting on about August 26th and go on the 15-day DL so that we can bring them back up in September and still possibly use them for the playoff roster?

Maybe I'm not understanding the rules correctly, but an injured guy is given an exception and allowed to be on the playoff roster, right?

I certainly hope the Brewers optimize the roster some more. not relying on specialists, and a staff that almost always gives you 6 if not more innings really gives you the chance to get a leg up on other teams by having different skill sets on the bench.

The only reason Dillard or such would be needed would be due to injury in which case they can be put on the roster anyway.

De La Cruz pitched a few days ago in a fairly close game. Looks like he's moved ahead of Dillard. I hope they make a move for Green after, he's earned it. I won't hold my breath, even though I think Green could be the final piece to this puzzle.

Yeah, no disagreement there. I just mentioned that it won't be Taylor.

I can see Gamel coming up for a couple days, if they want him eligible for the playoffs. But chances are, Weeks and Gomez will be back for the playoffs and they will replace a couple of players that are currently on the 25-man squad.

As I pointed out in my previous statement, what happens with De La Cruz after the double header? Are they going to go with an extra guy on the pitching staff the rest of year, or even month? I doubt it.

Rosters expand September 1st. It would only be 7 games where they're carrying an extra pitcher.

I get the feeling they'll keep the 13 pitchers through the end of the Pirates series at least since Estrada will be drawing the start on Tuesday.

The off days on Thursday and Monday give the Brewers some flexibility to set up their rotation going into the two Cardinals match-ups and their match-up against the Phillies.

Yeah... I don't think the Brewers will keep 13 pitchers past Thursday. They are in position, although that could change quickly, to keep both Weeks and Gomez on the DL until they are 100%, and thus past Sept 1st. So having 13 pitchers until then would be possible, but it just seems like a bad strategy. Why not give the team another option for the playoff roster? It would be nice to have a bat with some pop on the bench... so I could see Gamel being called up and actually making the playoff roster.

We don't have to use the 25 man roster that we have on August 31st. Players who are on the DL at that time can be placed on the play-off roster. If someone goes on the DL after August 31st (I know that is rare) I believe that you can use anyone that was on your 40 man roster on August 31st to replace them. I think that is how K-Rod pitched in the 2002 play-offs.

I think Dillard is the first pitcher sent down, not De la Cruz. I think that the only reason that Dillard is still on the roster is that Roenicke forgot that he is still on the team.
