Standings news -- well, Nashville was hoping to be closer heading into this series in Omaha Basically, a four-game sweep is a must just to continue breathing.

***

OK, here's the apparent DSL scoop. Last night, the first-place Mariners won the first game of their doubleheader and the second game was cancelled. With each team playing just once today, it seems the closest the Brewers could come is within percentage points of first place -- a virtual tie but still behind.

There are five divisions in the DSL, all listed here.

That would seem to indicate that at least one wild card team makes the playoffs, and guess what, your 2011 DSL Cerveceritos appeared to have won that spot Friday night.

Here's your Wild Card Standings. Congrats, boys! (at worst, a percentage point lead.) Wow, now that's a lot of teams in a standings list.

So how do the playoffs work? Here's what the MiLB.com info page says. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

So, end of long story, it appears there will be DSL Brewers playoff baseball!

Nashville Media Notes:IT’S EASY BEING GREEN: Since June 1st, infielder Taylor Green leads the PCL with a .379 average (96-for-253) is 2nd in the circuit with 96 hits, 62 RBIs, and is third with 38 extra-base hits. For the year, he ranks 7th in the PCL with a team-best .334 average, 5th in slugging (.581), and is 13th in the league with 81 RBIs. His 21 home runs this season are a new career high (15 in 2008).

GINDL GOING OFF: Outfielder Caleb Gindl is batting .363 (69-for-190) with five homers, three triples, 10 doubles, 25 RBIs, and 37 runs scored over his last 49 games. He has hit safely in 26 of his last 33 contests and ranks 2nd in the PCL with 63 hits since July 1st.

MAT MASHING: Infielder Mat Gamel -- who ranks 5th in the PCL with 239 total bases this season -- has hit safely in 42 of his last 55 games (73-for-216, .338), including 25 multiple-hit efforts. In 34 games since the All-Star break, Gamel is hitting .316 (43-for-136) with 14 multi-hit efforts, seven home runs, and 30 RBIs.

Final: @DSL Cardinals 6, DSL Brewers 1

The Cerveceritos lost, but who cares? Orinar los pantalones, because they're going to the playoffs! Eduard Reyes struck out six and walked one in five innings but allowed three unearned runs; Marcos Padilla followed and allowed three (earned) runs himself, finishing an uninspiring debut season with a 4.98 ERA and 17 walks against just eight strikeouts in 21.2 IP. Not much going on with the bats, though Raphachel Colatosti did reach three times on two hits and a HBP--along with committing his 15th and 16th errors. The Cerveceritos had six in total, so that's...bad.

Now there's only one thing to do: Gana toda la maldita cosa.

Final: @Mississippi 3, Huntsville 1

Another very dull game. At least Lee Haydel, Sean Halton, and Khris Davis each reached twice. Haydel had two hits, Halton singled and walked, and Davis singled and was hit by a pitch. After an awful month+ stretch, Haydel is finally turning things around; it would be nice if he could finish with better numbers than last year and make me look not-terrible for picking him to break out this year.

Nick Bucci with a great outing but no win to show for it. 7 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 1 BB and 7 Ks. I was never as sold on him as some others were, but it is looking like I was wrong. He just turned 21 and his K rate has gotten much better the past few games.

Our pitching depth is starting to look a lot better. Peralta looks great. Thornburg just needs to cut down on the walks but I really like him as a prospect. Jungmann and Bradley will help the depth as well. Then you have Bucci. Friers is an interesting prospect. Scarpetta and Heckathorn have some potential as well.

Final: Tampa 5, @Brevard County 2

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. -- Nick Bucci's seven shutout innings went to waste as Brevard County's bullpen faltered in a 5-2 loss to the Tampa Yankees on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium. The loss was the third in a row for the 'Tees.

Bucci allowed just five hits and one walk, while striking out six and left the game with a 2-0 lead. Those two runs came in the bottom of the fifth, when Chuck Caufield stole home as part of a double steal and Brent Dean drove in Scott Krieger on a RBI triple.

Mitch Conner replaced Bucci in the eighth and after striking out the first batter of the frame, allowed a single, ground-rule double and hit a batter to load the bases.

Conner was then replaced by Bradley Blanks who proceeded to give up a two-run single to Ronnier Mustelier, that tied the game at 2-2. The next batter, Deangelo Mack hit a three-run homer to give Tampa a 5-2 lead.

The Manatees (52-71 overall, 25-2 will try and salvage the series finale with the Yankees (66-57, 29-25) on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m.

Brevard County will give the ball to Hiram Burgos (4-7, 4.94), while Jose Quintana (8-2, 2.86) will take the hill for the Yankees.

Ah well, the most important thing here is Bucci's outing. You can see his line listed above, and it's a good one; he also had an 8/4 GO/FO. Scooter Gennett collected a double.

Final: @Burlington 9, Wisconsin 1

Bees pull away from Rattlers for 9-1 win
Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers
BURLINGTON, IA – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored first on Saturday night at Community Field. The Burlington Bees scored more. Burlington topped the Timber Rattlers 9-1 to send the Rattlers to their third straight loss. Jose Macias picked up the win for the Bees as he scattered five hits over six innings and struck out six.
Wisconsin (60-64 overall, 22-32 second half) got on the board in the second inning. Jason Rogers walked to start the inning, but was still at first with two outs. Then, Chad Stang sent a fly ball down the line in right field. The ball glanced off the glove of Josh Whitaker after the Bees right fielder made a long run to get to the ball. Rogers scored easily and Stang wound up on third with a triple.
The Bees (67-57, 22-32) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Yordano Cabrera singled to start the inning. He moved to second on a grounder and stole third. Ryan Pineda scored Cabrera with a sacrifice fly to center.

Burlington took the lead in the third inning. Josh Whitaker singled in a pair of runs to make the score 3-1. The Bees tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning off Rattlers starting pitcher Matt Miller. Tyreace House drove in the first run of the inning with a single. Beau Taylor made it 5-1 with a sacrifice fly.

Dan Britt relieved Miller to start the sixth inning and gave up a double, a single, and a walk to load the bases. Taylor drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run. Britt retired the next two batters, but allowed a double to AJ Kirby-Jones that cleared the bases to give the Bees the 9-1 lead.

Nick Shaw had three singles for the Rattlers, including a pair of leadoff singles, but Macias and two Burlington relievers held the Rattlers to one run on seven hits.
Game two of the four game series at Community Field is Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm. Brooks Hall (6-4, 3.35) is scheduled to be the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Burlington will counter with Blake Hassebrock (7-7, 2.49) heading to the mound. Game time is 2:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 1:40pm.

Miller's line: 5 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K--and, of course, 1 HBP. Brian Garman and Adrian Rosario each worked scoreless innings. Stang had two hits plus a walk. Cody Hawn was 0-4 with three strikeouts.

Final: Nashville 4, @Omaha 1

Nashville Sounds

PAPILLION, Neb. - The Nashville Sounds scored four runs in the top of the first inning and later turned their second triple play of the season en route to a 4-1 victory over the division-leading Omaha Storm Chasers on Saturday evening at Werner Park in the opener of a four-game series.

The win was the Sounds' tenth straight victory in a series opener and pulled Nashville (65-63) back within 6 ½ games of the Storm Chasers in the PCL American Conference Northern Division race.

Right-hander Josh Butler (8-7) took over sole possession of the Sounds' victories lead as he finally defeated Omaha after dropping his first three starts against them earlier this season. Butler authored a quality start, allowing one run on six hits over six innings of work, to pick up the win, his team-best eighth of the year.

The Sounds jumped out to a quick lead with four first-inning runs against Omaha left-hander Mike Montgomery.

Eric Farris reached on a one-out single and came around to score when Taylor Green followed with an RBI double to left. After Erick Almonte singled to put runners on the corners, Mat Gamel lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Green for a 2-0 advantage. Martin Maldonado then singled before he and Almonte scored on Caleb Gindl's two-out, two-run double to left.

In the inning, Almonte and Maldonado extended their longest hitting streaks of the season to 10 and eight games, respectively.

Following the four-run first frame, Nashville didn't advance a run to second base again until the ninth.

Omaha scored its lone run in the home half of the second. Cody Clark grounded a one-out double to left off Butler and scored when Lance Zawadzki followed with an RBI single to right, which made it a 4-1 contest.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Sounds turned their second triple play of the season. With runners on first and second, Clint Robinson hit a scorching liner to center that tipped off Logan Schafer's glove then bounced off the outfielder's head before finally being caught. The runners, Irving Falu and Lorenzo Cain, had already advanced to their next base on the play and were easily put out as Schafer threw to second baseman Farris, who stepped on second then tossed to first baseman Gamel for the third and final out [audio].

Nashville, which is the only Pacific Coast League club to turn a triple play this season, has turned three twice in the same year for the first time in franchise history. The Sounds' previous triple-killing of 2011 came on June 3rd against Iowa at Greer Stadium.

Butler worked into and out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the fourth, keeping the Sounds' 4-1 lead intact. After a Yamaico Navarro single sandwiched by a pair of walks filled the bags, the Nashville right-hander induced an infield fly pop-up from Joaquin Arias and an inning-ending groundout from Jarrod Dyson.

Omaha left the bases loaded again in the eighth, this time against Sounds reliever Daniel Herrera. Arias was the victim once again as the Nashville southpaw struck him out to end the frame and leave the bags full of Storm Chasers.

Herrera worked the final three innings in scoreless fashion for Nashville to close out the win and notch his first save of the year. He struck out a season-high five batters.

Montgomery (5-8) took the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits over his seven frames of action.

The division rivals continue their series with a 2:05 p.m. matinee on Sunday afternoon, when fans will be treated to an excellent pitching matchup. Right-hander Mike Fiers (5-0, 1.64), a winner in five of his six Triple-A starts, will man the bump for the Sounds to face the PCL's ERA leader - Omaha right-hander Luis Mendoza (9-5, 2.30).

Nice to see Gamel join Green back in the starting lineup. Gindl walked twice to go with his double, and Green had two hits.

As you probably noticed if you clicked on the Nashville triple play link, what was an audio-only link now shows the video -- gotta love Mat Gamel's "did that just happen" covering of his face and Logan Schafer's aw-shucks grin as he runs off the field. Schafer really Canseco'd it off his head but recovered to make the catch, fun!

My "Canseco" reference came before reading this --

Chasers fall after poor start

By Rob White, Omaha World-Herald Staff Writer

For a split-second Saturday night, Logan Schafer had visions of Jose Canseco dancing through his head.

The Nashville center fielder made a spectacular third-inning catch on a ball that deflected off his glove — and then off his head — before he swiped it out of the air and started a rally-killing triple play.

“Pretty much as lucky as it gets, letting it hit me on the top of the head,” Schafer said.

Staked to a four-run first-inning lead and backed by the big defensive play, Sounds pitcher Josh Butler combined with reliever Daniel Ray Herrera to keep Omaha in check the rest of the way for a 4-1 win before 9,023 at Werner Park — the second sellout of the year at the new ballpark.

That was the score when Omaha's Irving Falu and Lorenzo Cain singled to start the third inning. Then red-hot first baseman Clint Robinson hit a line drive to straightaway center that appeared about to sail beyond a retreating Schafer's reach.

“At first I didn't know if it was going to land in front of me or if it was going to keep climbing,” Schafer said. “It took off like a golf drive, and I had to read it again. I got back, and saw it tailing a bit — it was a little behind me, but I didn't have enough time to really turn around. So I tried to throw my glove up there and get a piece of it.”

He was able to deflect it back into the air, and as he did so both Falu and Cain started to take off, thinking the ball was going to hit the ground.

“You get out maybe three-quarters (of the way to the next base) and just make sure the ball drops and then you can go score,” Omaha manager Mike Jirschele said. “There's nobody out right there. ... But it looked like it was going to drop.

“I'm sure that will be on ESPN tonight.”

That's when the ball then bounced off a twisting Schafer's head, and the outfielder made one final swipe at it with his glove — reeling it in at about knee level. Both Falu and Cain were well off their bases and Nashville was easily able to double them both off for the second and third outs.

Many a veteran baseball watcher in attendance couldn't remember seeing anything like it.

“Right then I knew things weren't going our way,” Jirschele said. “I've seen it hit somebody (Canseco, in a 1993 game) on the head and go out (for a home run). ... I wish I'd seen that again instead of what I saw.”

Butler (8-7) pitched out of trouble frequently — he gave up six hits and walked four but allowed only one run in six innings. He went through a range of emotions on the triple play, feeling he'd given up an extra-base hit, then thinking Schafer had made the catch, then thinking the ball was dropping after all, then celebrating the catch that would turn into the triple play.

“I've kind of done that all year, runners on base with none out or one out,” Butler said. “I'd prefer not to do it that way — I like to have quick innings — but I've gotten used to it.”

Omaha starter Mike Montgomery (5-8) pitched six scoreless, two-hit innings after giving up four runs on five hits in the first.

“They were pretty comfortable at the plate in the first inning, so I started going inside more and kept them a little more off balance,” Montgomery said. “I just had to keep battling.”

Slam Powers Orem Over Brewers

By Nicholas Allen, Helena Brewers

A fourth inning grand slam off the bat of Chris Giovinazzo gave Orem all the runs they needed in a 4-3 victory over the Brewers at Kindrick Legion Field Saturday. The opposite field blast off of Brewers starter Mike Strong (2-5), put the Owlz up 4-2. Strong took the loss, pitching six innings and allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks. Alex Jones kept Helena close, tossing three scoreless innings.

Ben McMahan homered for the sixth time this season and for the third time in four games to give the Brewers the lead in the second. Helena added a run in the third when Yadiel Rivera doubled in Robbie Garvey. McMahan drove in another run in the bottom of the ninth to bring the Brewers to within one. The Crew had runners on first and second but Orem went to their third pitcher of the ninth, Suammy Baez, who struck out Kyle Dhanani to end the threat and earn the save.

The series wraps up Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 PM (2:05 Central).

Brewers drop third in a row

Helena Independent Record

Chris Giovinazzo belted a grand slam to right field in the fourth inning Saturday, lifting the Orem Owlz to a 4-3 win over the Helena Brewers at Kindrick Legion Field.

The Brewers took a 2-0 lead into the fourth frame, after Ben McMahan went deep in the second for his sixth home run of the year and his third shot in his last four games; and Yadiel Rivera struck an RBI double in the third to score Robbie Garvey. But after Helena starter Mike Strong had been practically untouchable through three innings, the Owlz took advantage in the fourth: a pair of singles, a hit batsmen and a walk set up Giovinazzo for his grand slam. It was only the second homer of the season for the center fielder.

Helena had a comeback brewing in the ninth, when Parker Berberet reached on a fielding error by Giovinazzo. With two outs, Eddie Sipple replaced Eric Cendejas on the mound for Orem and Berberet advanced to second on a wild pitch to Max Walla. Walla struck a line drive single to center to keep the inning alive, and then a ground ball to the same spot by McMahan scored Berberet.

With the Owlz clinging to just a one-run lead, they brought in their third pitcher of the frame. Suammy Baez struck out Kyle Dhanani, and a late rally by the hosts was thwarted for the second straight day.

Giovinazzo was 3 for 4 with the grand slam to lead Orem. McMahan was 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs for Helena.

Helena Box Score

That was a two-out grand slam, one pitch different and Mike Strong has six scoreless -- that's baseball; RHP Alex Jones, who Toby recently profiled, finished up well, as noted above; H-Crew drew only one walk, fanned 11 times; Ben McMahan was the DH -- he's been in LF nine times, DH 11, he needs to be in the field every day, staff...

Schafer, Sounds turn 'crazy' triple play

Center fielder snags liner off head, catches runners off-guard

By Robert Emrich / Special to MLB.com

Logan Schafer had never been part of a triple play before. His first one was an unforgettable experience.

The Nashville Sounds center fielder caught a ball off his head to start an unusual triple play in Saturday's 4-1 road win over the Omaha Storm Chasers.

Nashville had a 4-1 lead when singles by Irving Falu and Lorenzo Cain put runners at first and second in the bottom of the third inning. Clint Robinson followed with a liner to deep center field.

"It started with a line drive and it looked pretty well hit off the bat," Schafer said. "I didn't know if I would need to go in on the ball and I got a late read and then I realized it was hit with some backspin and was going back.

"I felt like I didn't have enough time to turn around and I reached up my glove. [The ball] went straight up, hit me in the head and I tried to scoop it up. It was a whole lot of luck and it was pretty crazy."

Once the ball struck Schafer's head, Falu and Cain took off. After Schafer plucked the ball out of the air, he fired it back to second baseman Eric Farris.

"The last thing I'm thinking about when a ball is possibly over my head is where the baserunners are," he said. "What I'm trying go do is get the ball back into the infield as fast as possible. He [Farris] knew what to do when he got it. The runners did what they're supposed to do once they saw it bounce off my head. It was pretty lucky."

Farris stepped on second to double up Falu and fired over to first baseman Mat Gamel to complete the Sounds' second triple play of the season.

With the Sounds protecting a three-run lead, it was a game-changing play. You wouldn't have known it from the reaction Schafer got in the dugout.

"It was a little bit of disbelief and a lot of humor," the California native said. "When the ball hits you on your head, it's pretty embarrassing, but I'm glad I could catch it. They were all laughing quite a bit, it's a pretty funny play. Everyone was kind of in disbelief and they were all cracking up."

Schafer said the Sounds submitted the play to ESPN with hopes of seeing it make it onto SportsCenter.

The 24-year-old had just one hit but is batting .352 in 29 games since he was promoted from Double-A Huntsville. Overall, he's hitting .320 with four homers, 40 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in 88 games across three levels.

"Hitting is a lot of confidence and it depends on where you are mentally," Schafer said. "This team, they've been playing well and the confidence they have has been through the roof. It's fun. Hitting is contagious. I just get into the flow and try to get on base for the guys behind me and go from there. "

Taylor Green was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Caleb Gindl plated a pair of runs for the Sounds.

Josh Butler (8-7) earned the win after allowing a run on six hits over six innings. Daniel Ray Herrera notched his first save with three scoreless frames.

Logan Schafer has committed just one error in 29 games for Triple-A Nashville. (MiLB.com)
