Final: AZL Brewers 3, @AZL Giants 1

Three-game win streak! Joel Prince turned in the longest outing of his career, and though he gave up some hits, it was a successful one: 5 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. Rounding out the roster of under-the-radar yet promising pitchers, Chad Thompson and Michael Schaub each tossed two scoreless frames. One of their batting counterparts, Kevin Berard, got his batting average back over .300 with a 3-4 game; upping the interest level, he got another start at shortstop, though he committed an error. Ronny Puello collected two hits, which isn't that interesting until you realize that he had only five all year coming into today.

A two-run 8th broke the 1-all tie:

AZL Brewers Top of the 8th
  • Ronny Puello singles on a fly ball to center fielder Elliott Blair.
  • Andres Martinez ground bunts into a force out, pitcher Raymundo Montero to shortstop Carter Jurica. Ronny Puello out at 2nd. Andres Martinez to 1st.
  • With Malcolm Dowell batting, Andres Martinez advances to 2nd on caught stealing error by Carter Jurica, assist to catcher Myles Schroder.
  • Malcolm Dowell walks.
  • Kevin Berard singles on a line drive to right fielder Gus Benusa. Andres Martinez scores. Malcolm Dowell to 2nd.
  • Adam Weisenburger singles on a line drive to center fielder Elliott Blair. Malcolm Dowell scores. Kevin Berard to 3rd. Adam Weisenburger to 2nd on the throw.
  • Raymundo Montero intentionally walks Jimmie Pharr.
  • Jalen Harris grounds into double play, shortstop Carter Jurica to second baseman Jean Delgado to first baseman Stephen Yarrow. Jimmie Pharr out at 2nd.

Final (game one): DSL Brewers 4, @DSL Cardinals 2 (8 innings)

The box score says the game was completed early, but given that the Brewers broke the two-all tie in the top of the 8th and used their closer, Carlos Sosa, in the bottom half, I have a feeling this was planned for seven innings. Joel Dicent struck out five in four innings before the game was suspended, and Orlando Torrez bridged the gap to Sosa with three scoreless frames, allowing just one baserunner. Buncha nondescript batting lines; Orlando Arcia and Sthervin Matos each 1-3 with a walk.

DSL Brewers Top of the 8th
  • Raphachel Colatosti called out on strikes.
  • Orlando Arcia walks.
  • Deivi Mejia singles on a ground ball to center fielder Jhohan Acevedo. Orlando Arcia to 3rd.
  • With Sthervin Matos batting, wild pitch by Jhonny Polanco, Orlando Arcia scores. Deivi Mejia to 2nd.
  • With Sthervin Matos batting, throwing error by Jhonny Polanco on the pickoff attempt, Deivi Mejia scores.
  • Sthervin Matos flies out to left fielder Domingo Diaz.
  • Juan De Leon walks.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Leudi Otano replaces Juan De Leon.
  • Raul Mondesi grounds out, shortstop Leobaldo Pina to first baseman Alejandro Mejia.

When you're pinch-run for by a catcher, it doesn't say much for your footspeed.

Yup I can see why Brewers felt Peralta wasnt good enough for a spot start....

Well it would have been hard for him to be any better than Estrada was in his start. I am really excited about Peralta. Will he or Thornburg garner attention in prospects rankings

Final: @Brevard County 5, Daytona 2

Finally, the Austin Ross we saw at Wisconsin makes an appearance at BC: 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K. You can probably guess which pitcher gave up both Daytona runs. Bradley Blanks struck out four of the five men he faced for the 1.1-inning save. Scooter Gennett and Hunter Morris each had two hits, with one of Gennett's being a double, and D'Vontrey Richardson had a hit and a walk and committed no obvious baserunning errors. Josh Prince went deep for the fourth time. Maybe if I mock him some more his homers will go up by a factor of four again next year.

I think it's more likely that Prince and Scott Krieger batted out of order here but went unnoticed:

Brevard County Bottom of the 2nd
  • Kentrail Davis flies out to left fielder Evan Crawford.
  • Chuck Caufield flies out to center fielder Matthew Szczur.
  • Scott Krieger singles on a line drive to right fielder Michael Burgess.
  • Josh Prince homers (4) on a fly ball to left center field. Scott Krieger scores.
  • Brent Dean grounds out, second baseman Matthew Cerda to first baseman Justin Bour.

Peralta has induced a lot of swing and misses on his high fastball tonight. I know he doesn't have any walks, but I'd still like to see his control refined. He's going to a lot of unnecessarily deep 3-2, 2-2 counts. When he pounds the corners, he's really, really good.

He must not be going deep into the count too much. He is only at 92 pitches through 7 innings

He's had a number of early-count GB outs. I've watched almost every pitch of his tonight - he's definitely thrown too many un-needed pitches.

I also don't think his high FB will get nearly the swing and misses at the MLB level that it does in AAA.

Thanks for the info. I just get the updates through here. I am still going to be really excited about him http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

At some point Peralta is going to be mentioned among the top 50 prospects in baseball. He's MLB ready, has great stuff, and has gotten outstanding results of late.

We have a clear cut number 1 prospect now, even with the draft picks signing.
I agree. We have a very legitimate number 1 prospect and Thornburg is not a bad number 2 guys either. Sprinkle in a re-emerging Green and Gamel, Schafer and the draft picks and our system is starting to a look a little less depressing

I'd have the draft picks at #2 and #3 in whichever order, and if you like Lopez he could be #4.

But all in all, I agree. Guys like Santo Manzanillo, Orlando Arcia, etc etc essentially coming out of nowhere provide some depth that we didn't have.

We're still probably a bottom 3rd system, but the turnaround has begun.

KLaw already included Peralta as an honorable mention in his mid-season top 50 list, putting him safely in the top 60. I expect he'll be a consensus top 100 guy on all the major lists this off-season, and maybe a couple top 50s. Funny that going into the draft the experts seemed to agree that our first-round picks would become the clear top 2 prospects in the system. Two months later, I doubt anybody would say that.

While we haven't developed many pitchers over the years, Yo and Sheets both got lots of credit for their curves, but in reality a large portion of their strikeouts came on fastballs (especially the high cheese).
