Final (game one): @AZL Mariners 6, AZL Brewers 5 (10 innings)

Well, that didn't take long to wrap up. Suspended in the 9th inning, the Mariners won it in the 10th. Check out TooLiveBrew's original write-up for most of the details.

So the post-suspension play-by-play is obviously screwy:

AZL Mariners Bottom of the 9th
  • Defensive Substitution: Mark Rogers replaces right fielder Steve Felix, batting 3rd, playing right field.
  • Roberto Velasquez strikes out swinging.
  • Felipe Burin pops out to third baseman Jalen Harris in foul territory.
  • Yidid Batista flies out to right fielder Mark Rogers.

AZL Brewers Top of the 10th
  • Matthew Franco singles on a fly ball to center fielder James Zamarripa.
  • Jose R. Garcia ground bunts into a force out, pitcher Yunior De Jesus to shortstop Roberto Velasquez. Matthew Franco out at 2nd. Jose R. Garcia to 1st.
  • Kevin Berard strikes out swinging. Jose R. Garcia steals (2) 2nd base.
  • Jalen Harris flies out to center fielder James Zamarripa.

AZL Mariners Bottom of the 10th
  • Reginald Lawson flies out to right fielder Mark Rogers.
  • Phillips Castillo hit by pitch.
  • With Rigoberto Rangel batting, wild pitch by Greg Davis, Phillips Castillo to 2nd.
  • Rigoberto Rangel singles on a fly ball to center fielder Jose R. Garcia. Phillips Castillo scores.

Elliot Glynn playing left field I would buy. Mark Rogers playing right field, a day after starting in Brevard County no less? Not so much. On the other hand, that really is Matt Franco returning from his surprise tooth extraction and not a box score error, since Franco also started game two.

2nd-rounder Jorge Lopez made his pro debut in the second AZL game, getting the start and going two innings:

AZL Mariners Bottom of the 1st
  • James Zamarripa grounds out to first baseman Jalen Harris.
  • Nick Franklin lines out to shortstop Kevin Berard.
  • Felipe Burin singles on a line drive to center fielder Malcolm Dowell.
  • Angel Salome grounds into a force out, shortstop Kevin Berard to second baseman Renaldo Jenkins. Felipe Burin out at 2nd.

AZL Mariners Bottom of the 2nd
  • Reginald Lawson reaches on fielding error by third baseman Andres Martinez.
  • Rigoberto Rangel pops out to second baseman Renaldo Jenkins.
  • Luke Guarnaccia singles on a fly ball to right fielder Jose R. Garcia. Reginald Lawson to 2nd.
  • Jose Martinez flies out to left fielder Matthew Franco. Reginald Lawson to 3rd.
  • Roberto Velasquez grounds out, second baseman Renaldo Jenkins to first baseman Jalen Harris.

Final (game two): AZL Brewers 5, @AZL Mariners 0

After Jorge Lopez's pro debut, detailed above, Manuel Ruiz came in and pitched beautifully, tossing six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Ruiz walked three and allowed two hits. Kevin Berard had a great day, 3-4 with two doubles and a walk. Renaldo Jenkins added two hits, and Malcolm Dowell collected a triple and a walk, the triple being just his third extra-base hit. Rafael Neda played the whole game and, while hitless, filled the stat sheet in other, more creative ways: he drew two walks, committed a passed ball, picked a runner off first, and was caught stealing home.

Jenkins must have whiffed on the suicide squeeze:

AZL Brewers Top of the 5th
  • Rafael Neda reaches on throwing error by pitcher Lars Huijer.
  • Jimmie Pharr singles on a fly ball to left fielder Reginald Lawson. Rafael Neda to 2nd.
  • Jalen Harris out on a sacrifice bunt to first baseman Jose Martinez. Rafael Neda to 3rd. Jimmie Pharr to 2nd.
  • With Renaldo Jenkins batting, Rafael Neda caught stealing home, Jimmie Pharr to 3rd.
  • Renaldo Jenkins singles on a fly ball to left fielder Reginald Lawson. Jimmie Pharr scores.
  • Matthew Franco flies out to left fielder Reginald Lawson.

Final: @Wisconsin 12, Quad Cities 3

Rattlers offense breaks out in 12-3 win
Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers rebounded with a vengeance after being shut out on Saturday night. The Rattlers knocked 16 hits and scored 12 runs to defeat the Quad Cities River Bandits 12-3 Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. TJ Mittlestaedt and Nick Ramirez both drove in four runs to pace the offense. Brooks Hall picked up his sixth win of the season by allowing one run over five innings.
Mittelstaedt gave the Timber Rattlers (58-61 overall, 20-29, second half) a 1-0 lead in the first inning. He lifted a 3-2 pitch from Quad Cities starter Ryan Copeland over the wall in right field for his tenth home run of the season.

Quad Cities (69-49, 29-20) loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second inning against Hall. A sacrifice fly by Chris Edmondson scored the tying run, but Hall got out of the inning without giving up another run.

Hall was in trouble a couple more times, but he stranded a pair of runners in the third, worked around a leadoff double in the fourth, and a one out double in the fifth.

The Rattlers offense broke out in the bottom of the fifth inning, but needed some two-out hits to break the tie.

Franklin Romero started the inning with a single and stole second. Mike Brownstein’s single sent Romero to third. But, with two outs, both runners were still at the corners. Jason Rogers beat out an infield single to score Romero and put the Rattlers in front 2-1. Ramirez was next and he lined a double to the wall in right that scored both runners. Greg Hopkins dropped in a bloop single to score Ramirez for a 5-1 Rattlers advantage against Copeland.
Angel De Jesus relieved Copeland for the bottom of the sixth. He hit the first batter and walked the second batter of the inning. But, with two outs, Wisconsin had runners at second and third. Then, the barrage of two-out hits began again. Mittelstaedt singled in two runs. Chad Stang’s infield single put two runners on for Rogers.

Rogers lined a double off the wall in left field to drive in Mittelstaedt. Ramirez was next and his single to center sent two more Rattlers across the plate for a 10-1 lead.

In the seventh, Brownstein and Mittelstaedt had consecutive RBI singles to put the Rattlers up 12-1.

Hall left after five innings. He allowed a run on five hits, walked three, and struck out four. He qualified for the lead with the offensive explosion.

Quad Cities scored a pair of runs off reliever Casey Medlen in the top of the eighth. Medlen had worked 2-2/3 scoreless frames before the Bandits got consecutive RBI hits in the eighth. Seth Lintz came out of the Wisconsin bullpen get the final out the eighth and work a 1-2-3 ninth to finish off the River Bandits.

The Timber Rattlers and River Bandits conclude their series on Monday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. Game time is 12:05pm. Matt Miller (5-6, 4.53) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Drew Benes (1-0, 4.91) is set to start for the River Bandits.

If you can’t make it out to the ballpark, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 11:45am. Monday’s game is also available on MiLB.TV.

Most Wisconsin box scores have been dreary affairs offensively, especially with Cody Hawn and Mike Walker gone, so savor this one. Tony Pechek was the only Rattler without a hit, and he walked three times. Brandon Macias has done well since his promotion, posting two-hit games in three of his last four.

Final (game one): Lakeland 6, @Brevard County 2 (7 innings)

Canceled (game two)

Nick Bucci was doing very well through three, with a shutout going and a 4/0 K/BB, and even after allowing two runs in the 4th he had a 6/1 K/BB, but he couldn't get out of the 5th: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 7 K. Kentrail Davis was perfect with two singles and a HBP, and D'Vontrey Richardson tallied a single and a triple (and a caught-stealing, natch). Scooter Gennett was 1-3 to extend his hit streak to seven games. Hunter Morris did not play. Game two was canceled and will not be made up.

Bucci's last two innings:

Lakeland Top of the 4th
  • Jordan Lennerton doubles (24) on a fly ball to right fielder Juan Sanchez.
  • Tony Plagman strikes out swinging.
  • With Wade Gaynor batting, wild pitch by Nicholas Bucci, Jordan Lennerton to 3rd.
  • Wade Gaynor walks.
  • Rob Brantly doubles (5) on a line drive to left fielder Chuck Caufield. Jordan Lennerton scores. Wade Gaynor scores.
  • Avisail Garcia strikes out swinging.
  • Corey Jones flies out to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson.

Lakeland Top of the 5th
  • Daniel Fields walks.
  • Michael Rockett singles on a line drive to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson. Daniel Fields to 2nd.
  • William Bergolla strikes out on foul bunt.
  • Jordan Lennerton singles on a ground ball to right fielder Juan Sanchez. Daniel Fields scores. Michael Rockett to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Efrain Nieves replaces Nicholas Bucci.
  • Tony Plagman homers (17) on a fly ball to right field. Michael Rockett scores. Jordan Lennerton scores.
  • Wade Gaynor flies out to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson.
  • Rob Brantly strikes out swinging.

Final: @Jackson 3, Huntsville 2

Dan Merklinger was excellent (7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K), but two unearned runs off Rob Wooten in the 8th turned a win into a loss. Zelous Wheeler was 3-4 with two doubles, and Khris Davis wasn't far behind, 2-4 with a double. Lee Haydel, whose .270 batting average is a testament to how hot he was in the first half, showed signs of life with two singles and a walk; however, he was caught stealing twice. Haydel and D'Vontrey Richardson need to go to remedial base stealing camp over the winter.

Jackson Bottom of the 8th
  • Pitcher Change: Robert Wooten replaces Dan Merklinger.
  • Vincent Catricala reaches on fielding error by shortstop Hainley Statia.
  • Francisco Martinez out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Robert Wooten to first baseman Sean Halton. Vincent Catricala to 2nd.
  • Rich Poythress walks.
  • Jake Shaffer strikes out swinging.
  • Luis Antonio Jimenez doubles (3) on a fly ball to center fielder Lee Haydel. Vincent Catricala scores. Rich Poythress scores.
  • Gabriel Noriega strikes out swinging.

Anyone know why Taylor Green was removed from the Nashville game in the 4th inning? There doesn't appear to be an obvious reason. Please tell me he finally got a long overdue callup!

Possibly he was watching as Felipe Lopez started at third and slipped below .200, and in a fit of rage decided to chuck it all and go to culinary school.

I was pleased to note that he got a hit or two off Drabek, but after a check of the numbers it looks like he's got plenty of company in that regard. THough who knows given the guy pitches in Vegas...have I mentioned lately that I'm glad our minor leagues play in reasonable places?

Sounds End Winning Streak With 8-6 Loss

Gamel Extends Hitting Streak To 13 Games

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds' six-game winning streak came to

a halt with an 8-6 loss to the Las Vegas 51s in the third game of a

four-game series on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium.

With the loss and Memphis Redbirds win, Nashville (62-60) dropped to

third in the PCL American Northern Division, trailing the

division-leading Omaha Storm Chasers by 4 ½ games.

The Sounds collected 12 hits in the game, led by designated hitter Erick

Almonte going 3-for-5. Mat Gamel, Caleb Gindl, and Taylor Green all

added two hits.

Center fielder and leadoff hitter Logan Schafer went 0-for-3 with two walks to snap his 11-game hitting streak.

Las Vegas starter and Toronto Blue Jays #1 prospect Kyle Drabek (3-2)

scattered 11 hits and one walk for five runs (four earned) in 5 1/3

innings. All of his runs came in the first inning.

The Sounds trailed 4-0 early in the top of the first inning after

committing two throwing errors that led to three unearned runs.

Nashville batted around in the next frame and scored and got five runs

back to take a 5-4 lead. Left fielder Jordan Brown and Green collected

one-out singles to get the rally started. Almonte brought home the first

run on an infield groundout, which turned into a fielding error and

Brown coming home to score.

After Gamel extended his hitting streak to a season-high 13 games to

load the bases, second baseman Eric Farris laced a two-run double down

the third base line and into left field. The scoring in the frame

concluded when Gindl knocked a two-run single to center field.

Las Vegas left fielder Travis Snider tied the game at 5-5 in the third

inning with a solo homer off over the wall in right center. The long

ball was Snider's third of the season.

The 51s went ahead for good at 8-5 in the top of the sixth inning. Third

baseman Chris Woodward and second baseman Manny Mayorson chased Amaury

Rivas from the game with singles. After reliever Sean Green came into

the contest and induced ground out for the first out, right fielder

Ricardo Nanita jacked a three-run homer just beyond the reach of Gindl

over the right field wall.

Nashville scored their final run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Brandon Boggs walked, moved to third on an Almonte single, and scored on

a Gamel groundout.

Right-hander Amaury Rivas pitched five plus innings, surrendering seven

runs (four earned) on seven hits while striking out seven. The loss ties

Rivas with Iowa's Jay Jackson for the most in the PCL.

Green gave up one run in 2 2/3 innings while recording two strikeouts.

Randy Flores finished the contest with scoreless 1 1/3 innings.

The Sounds and 51s will continue their series at 7:05pm CT on Monday

evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Josh Butler (7-6, 4.97) will take

the mound against Las Vegas right-hander Chad Gaudin (0-0, 9.00).

Bucci K's seven, but allows five runs in loss

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. -- A four-run fifth inning for the Lakeland Flying Tigers was the difference against the Brevard County Manatees, as the 'Tees fell 6-2 in first of two scheduled seven-inning games at Space Coast Stadium on Sunday evening. The second game was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Brevard County jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. D'Vontrey Richardson drove in Shea Vucinich with an RBI triple and then Richardson scored on a Chuck Caufield sacrifice fly.

Nick Bucci started for the 'Tees and kept Lakeland scoreless through three innings, but was touched up for two runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run double by Rob Brantly that tied the game.

Bucci came undone in the fifth as he allowed three of the first four runners to reach base and left the game down 3-2. Efrain Nieves came in and Tony Plagman took the first pitch he saw from Nieves and deposited it over the right field fence, to give Lakeland a 6-2 lead.

For Bucci, he struck out seven in 4 1/3 innings but allowed five runs (all earned), on six hits and walked two.

Brevard County had a chance to get back in the game in the bottom of the fifth as the 'Tees had runners on the corners with one out, but Vucinich flied out to center and Scooter Gennett was doubled up at third to end the threat.

Both Richardson and Kentrail Davis had two hits each for the 'Tees.

After an off day on Monday, Brevard County will play host to the Daytona Cubs on both Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Jimenez' double sparks Generals' 3-2 victory over Stars

Jackson scores two in 8th to pick up win

by Brandon Shields, Jackson Sun

When the Jackson Generals needed a big hit in their 3-2 win over the Huntsville Stars on Sunday, Luis Jimenez came up big.

With runners on first and second and two out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Jimenez broke a 1-1 tie when he hit a double to left-center field to bring both runners home. Huntsville center fielder Lee Haydel appeared to lose the ball in the sun as he ran for it, and Vinnie Catricala and Rich Poythress had time to get home to give the Generals the lead.

Jimenez' game-winning hit was set up when Catricala led off the inning by reaching base on an error. Poythress walked two batters later to put the runners on.

Stephen Pryor helped preserve the win in the ninth inning as he gave up a hit and an unearned run in the top of the ninth to record his third save.

An errant throw to first on the Stars' first batter of the inning put Huntsville second baseman Matt Cline on second. He scored a batter later when Anderson De La Rosa hit a single to center field.

A walk put runners on first and second with one out, and the Generals ended the game on a double play when shortstop Gabriel Noriega fielded a grounder, threw it to second baseman Scott Savastano for one out and got it to Poythress on first for the game-clinching out.

The win is the team's fifth in six games as the Generals have pulled within six games of division-leading Chattanooga with 21 games remaining.
