Standings Notes:

Sounds only 4.5 games back (five in the loss column), 24 left to play, four remaining against first-place Omaha (road). Don't bet against Nashville -- on fire!

Brevard County just one game back in the loss column -- find a winning streak, Sea Cows!

The Cerveceritos only have ten games remaining. They are two back of the hated Marineritos, whom they play four more times, including the next three games. BIG!

Final (game one): Brevard County 5, @Lakeland 1 (7 innings)

The whole suspended-game thing worked out pretty well for the 'Tees, who got to trade facing dominating Michael Morrison for two lesser lights on the mound. Eric Marzec, your de facto starter after coming in with one out in the 2nd, went 3.2 innings and only allowed one run. Scooter Gennett paced the offense with three hits, including his 8th homer. Hunter Morris also went deep, his 16th. No Shawn Zarraga after leaving early yesterday, and he's not starting game two either.

Marzec got off to a rocky start, but Kentrail Davis's arm helped bail him out:

Lakeland Bottom of the 2nd
  • Corey Jones grounds out to first baseman Scott Krieger.
  • Pitcher Change: Eric Marzec replaces Evan Anundsen.
  • Daniel Fields singles on a ground ball to second baseman Scooter Gennett.
  • Michael Rockett strikes out swinging.
  • Eric Roof singles on a fly ball to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson. Daniel Fields to 2nd.
  • William Bergolla singles on a fly ball to right fielder Kentrail Davis. Daniel Fields scores. William Bergolla out at 2nd on the throw, right fielder Kentrail Davis to catcher Michael Roberts to shortstop Josh Prince to first baseman Scott Krieger.

Final: AZL Royals 5, @AZL Brewers 4 (13 innings)

The A-Team blew the save in the 9th but drew the game out until the 13th inning, when the Royals and their 17 hits finally conquered the Brewers. Will West didn't enter the game until the 7th inning but basically put up a starter's line, except with the blown save: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K. Put that in innings 1-6 and it's fine work. Inversely, Justin James was the starter, making his first rehab appearance, but of course went just one inning. Malcolm Dowell was back in the lineup, leading off and playing center field, and he rapped out two hits, as did Hitaniel Arias and Jalen Harris. Arias has now posted two hits in four of his last five games and five of his last seven. Rafael Neda appeared for the first time since his one-game rehab stint on 6/29 and collected a triple and a walk in three trips before being relieved by Adam Weisenburger. Kevin Berard made his first career start and appearance at shortstop and went 1-4 with a walk while committing one fewer error than Renaldo Jenkins usually does. If you were worried about the team's defense becoming too good, though, don't: Arias picked up two himself, giving him an astounding 13--astounding because Arias only plays first base. Michael Reed out again.
Infield hit to score the winning run, plus a rather ignominious end:

AZL Royals Top of the 13th
  • Pitcher Change: Connor Whalen replaces Will West.
  • Nicholas Cuckovich singles on a line drive to right fielder Ronny Puello.
  • Jerico Blanco ground bunts into a force out, catcher Adam Weisenburger to shortstop Kevin Berard. Nicholas Cuckovich out at 2nd. Jerico Blanco to 1st.
  • Jerrell Allen singles on a ground ball to left fielder Jose R. Garcia. Jerico Blanco to 2nd.
  • Brian Gaylord reaches on force attempt, fielding error by shortstop Kevin Berard. Jerico Blanco to 3rd. Jerrell Allen to 2nd.
  • Terrance Gore singles on a ground ball to third baseman Jalen Harris. Jerico Blanco scores. Jerrell Allen to 3rd. Brian Gaylord to 2nd.
  • D'Andre Toney strikes out swinging.
  • Humberto Arteaga called out on strikes.

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 13th
  • Jose R. Garcia strikes out swinging, catcher Alexander Marquez to first baseman Brian Gaylord.
  • Malcolm Dowell grounds out, shortstop Humberto Arteaga to first baseman Brian Gaylord.
  • Kevin Berard walks.
  • With Adam Weisenburger batting, Christian Witt picks off Kevin Berard at 1st on throw to Brian Gaylord.

Final: @DSL Mariners 3, DSL Brewers 1

A two-run 1st inning was all the hated Marineritos needed today. Nevertheless, 18-year-old Venezuelan righty Jorge Ortega, who's flown under the radar some this year thanks to a poor strikeout rate, pitched well: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HR. Eduard Reyes turned in a one-inning cameo, allowing a run on three hits. The Cerveceritos had just three hits, though six of the nine starters drew a walk. Orlando Arcia and Sthervin Matos (yes, that's his name; we confirmed it) were both shut out, 0-4.

The Brewers worked hard to avoid scoring in a couple innings, in particular the 3rd:

DSL Brewers Top of the 3rd
  • Dionis Hinojosa walks.
  • With Yonki Hernandez batting, Dionis Hinojosa steals (29) 2nd base.
  • With Yonki Hernandez batting, Dionis Hinojosa caught stealing 3rd base, catcher Alexander Capriata to third baseman George Soto.
  • Yonki Hernandez hit by pitch.
  • Francisco Castillo walks. Yonki Hernandez to 2nd.
  • Orlando Arcia flies out to center fielder Janelfry Zorrilla.
  • Deivi Mejia walks. Yonki Hernandez to 3rd. Francisco Castillo to 2nd.
  • Juan De Leon flies out to left fielder Wilton Martinez.

Final: Huntsville 6, @Jackson 3

Quality start by Michael Bowman + good middle relief + excellent Santo Manzanillo outing (three batters, two strikeouts, one save) = win. Brock Kjeldgaard powered the Stars to victory with two homers, doubling his AA total, and Zelous Wheeler also went deep. Khris Davis, unfortunately, was 0-4. Jackson used a couple of amusingly named pitchers tonight, James Gillheeney and Bobby LaFromboise; LaFromboise is, of course, French for "the Fromboise".

Final (game two): @Lakeland 8, Brevard County 1 (7 innings)

Another very tough game in a lost season full of them for Mark Rogers: 3 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 2 HR. Scooter Gennett capped a great day by going 2-4 with a double on the heels of his three-hit game in the opener. Scott Krieger contributed a rare two-walk game as well as a single, and D'Vontrey Richardson cracked a double.
I really, really hope D'Vo was bunting for a hit here:

Brevard County Top of the 1st
  • Scooter Gennett doubles (14) on a fly ball to right fielder Avisail Garcia.
  • Shea Vucinich walks.
  • D' Vontrey Richardson hits a sacrifice bunt. Throwing error by pitcher Shawn Teufel. Scooter Gennett to 3rd. Shea Vucinich to 2nd. D' Vontrey Richardson to 1st.
  • Kentrail Davis pops out to third baseman Wade Gaynor in foul territory.
  • Chuck Caufield strikes out swinging.
  • Scott Krieger walks. Scooter Gennett scores. Shea Vucinich to 3rd. D' Vontrey Richardson to 2nd.
  • Josh Prince flies out to center fielder Daniel Fields.

A four-run 3rd inning ended Rogers' day:

Lakeland Bottom of the 3rd
  • Tony Plagman singles on a fly ball to right fielder Kentrail Davis.
  • Wade Gaynor walks. Tony Plagman to 2nd.
  • Rob Brantly grounds out, pitcher Mark Rogers to second baseman Scooter Gennett to first baseman Scott Krieger. Tony Plagman to 3rd. Wade Gaynor to 2nd.
  • Avisail Garcia grounds out, shortstop Josh Prince to first baseman Scott Krieger.
  • Corey Jones singles on a ground ball to shortstop Josh Prince. Tony Plagman scores. Wade Gaynor to 3rd.
  • Daniel Fields homers (8) on a fly ball to right field. Wade Gaynor scores. Corey Jones scores.
  • Michael Rockett strikes out swinging.

Final: @Nashville 7, Las Vegas 6

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The red-hot Nashville Sounds extended their winning streak to six with a 7-6 victory over the Las Vegas 51s in front of 9,012 fans on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium.

Nashville (62-59) has been the hottest team in the Pacific Coast League since the All-Star break, improving to 21-10 since July 14th. The six-game win streak matches the club's longest this season (second occurrence).

The contest was the Sounds' PCL-leading 47th one-run affair this season (22-25 in those games).

The Sounds grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Logan Schafer led off with an opposite-field, line-drive double to left off Las Vegas starter P.J. Walters, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Jordan Brown (2-for-3) later plated Schafer with a sacrifice fly to center.

51s center fielder Mike McCoy evened the contest with one swing of the bat in the third, belting a solo homer to left off Sounds starter Sam Narron. It was his second longball of the season and made it a 1-1 contest.

Nashville responded in the home half of the third, plating five runs against Walters to reclaim the lead.

The Sounds took advantage of a pair of Las Vegas errors in the inning and received RBI singles from Brown and Taylor Green as well as a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mat Gamel to move in front by a 6-1 margin.

Las Vegas cut the Nashville lead to 6-4 with four runs in the top of the fifth inning against Narron.

McCoy delivered again for the visitors, looping an RBI single to right-center to score Ricardo Nanita from second to reduce the deficit to 6-2. After a single by Adeiny Hechevarria, Travis Snider drilled a run-scoring double to right and David Cooper added an RBI groundout. The final run of the frame scored when Adam Loewen's two-out single to deep second allowed Snider to cross home, but Loewen was out on the play to end the inning as he made a wide turn past first base.

Once again, the Sounds had an immediate response to a 51s rally with a score of their own in the home half of the frame. Brown greeted new Las Vegas reliever Mike MacDonald with a double to left and scored on Erick Almonte's one-out single to left to up the lead to 7-5.

Nashville missed a chance to further pad the lead, however, failing to push another run home despite having the bases loaded with one out. MacDonald struck out Caleb Gindl and induced an inning-ending grounder from Edwin Maysonet to escape the jam.

The 51s trimmed the Sounds' lead to 7-6 in the top of the seventh against reliever Mike McClendon. Hechevarria doubled to left and came home on Cooper's two-out RBI single to center.

However, Las Vegas got no closer as McClendon, Daniel Herrera, and Zack Segovia kept the visitors off the board the rest of the way.

A trio of Sounds extended lengthy hitting streaks in the contest. Gamel singled in the fifth inning to run his longest streak of the year to 12 games, Schafer pushed his streak to 11 games with his first-inning double, and Green's third-inning single upped the infielder's current streak to 10 games.

Narron (6-5) picked up just his second win in his last 13 starts for Nashville. The lanky lefty allowed five runs on eight hits over five innings, walking four batters and striking out five.

Segovia recorded the final two outs of the game to secure the victory and nail down his second save of the year.

Walters (7-6) absorbed the loss for the 51s after surrendering six runs (five earned) on six hits in four frames of action.

The teams continue the series with another 6:35 p.m. meeting on Sunday night. Right-hander Amaury Rivas (7-11, 5.01) will toe the slab for the Sounds to face Las Vegas right-hander Kyle Drabek (2-2, 6.58), the son of former Sounds pitcher Doug Drabek.

Every Sounds starter had a hit except Gindl, and I'm sure Narron, a career .275 hitter, would have had one too had they not been using the DH. Schafer continues to do two things we love to see: hit for power and take ball four. Eric Farris had two hits.

Stars Homer by Generals

Huntsville win ended Jackson's four-game win streak

By Chris Harris, Jackson Generals

JACKSON, TENN.- The Huntsville Stars blasted three home runs Saturday en route to a 6-3 win over Jackson at Pringles Park, snapping the Generals four-game winning streak. Brock Kjeldgaard cranked two homers in the game for Huntsville. The Stars win ended their five-game losing skid and was their first victory at Pringles Park this season. The Generals lead the series 2-1 and overall season series 8-5.

Michael Bowman (3-6) was a late addition as the starter for Huntsville and logged a quality start, earning the win. Bowman tossed six innings and surrendered two runs and five hits, striking out one and walking one. James Gillheeney (0-2) took the loss for Jackson, allowing six runs and eight hits in six innings. Gillheeney struck out two and walked one in his third Double-A outing this season. Santo Manzanillo saved his second game for Huntsville after giving up the game winning hit to the Generals on Thursday night.

Rich Poythress upped his batting streak to eight straight after a 1-for-4 night at the dish. Johermyn Chavez hit his 13th home run and was 2-for-4 to lead the Generals offensively. Kjeldgaard, Zelous Wheeler and Sergio Miranda had two hits each for the Stars.

Wheeler launched the Stars' first home of the series in the top of the second inning and Huntsville led 1-0. The home run was Wheeler's fifth in Double-A this season.

Kjeldgaard hit the first of his two homers in the top of the fourth inning; a two-run shot that placed the Stars on top 3-0.

The Generals got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo blast by Chavez. The 13th homer of the season for Chavez made the score 3-1.

Kjeldgaard hit his second home run, another two-run blast in the top of the sixth inning. Matt Cline later in the inning drove in Wheeler and Huntsville opened the game up and led 6-1.

Jackson began to chip away at the lead, cutting the deficit to 6-2 in the sixth inning with an RBI ground out by Scott Savastano. Then, in the eighth Savastano blasted a solo home run that made the score 6-3.

The Generals, continue their ten-game homestand and five-game series with Huntsville at Pringles Park Sunday afternoon. Game time is set for 2:05 PM. RHP Steven Hensley (3-6, 5.52) makes the start for the Generals against LHP Dan Merklinger (7-7, 4.32) for Huntsville. The game can be heard on Jackson's NewsTalk 101.5 FM and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com

Greetings Brewerfan!

I was at the Timber Rattlers game tonight. Arnett had a real bad first inning, but he was able to reign it in and limit the damage. He got it as high as 93 that I saw once, hit 91-92 about half a dozen times, and was sitting at 89 for most of the night. Quad Cities was able to make really solid contact in the first, but he did have moments of just dominating them with a good off speed/breaking ball combo the rest of the way.

Here's hoping on him. The first inning was a major "Oh no, here we go again" but the rest of the game was really encouraging. He probably would've had a much better shot of getting the W if they hadn't run into Anthony Ferrara. He was an absolute beast. He's already got a major league fastball (sat at 92 for most of the game) and is a lefty to boot.

Final: Quad Cities 6, @Wisconsin 0

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Anthony Ferrara and a pair of Quad Cities River Bandit relievers combined to shutout the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on four hits on Saturday night at Time Warner Cable Field. Ferrara earned his eleventh win of the season with six shutout innings in a 6-0 victory.

Quad Cities (69-48 overall, 29-18) got on the board with a pair of runs in the first inning. Joey Bergman's two-out single with the bases loaded drove in a pair of runs.

The Bandits struck again with two outs in the top of the second inning. Mike O'Neill singled in Packy Elkins to make the score 3-0.

Timber Rattlers starting pitcher Eric Arnett settled in after the first two innings. In his first Midwest League start of 2011, He tossed six innings, allowed three runs on five hits. Arnett struck out seven in the game.

However, Wisconsin (57-61, 19-29) could not get their bats going against Ferrara. The lefty for the River Bandits allowed one hit through his first 5 2/3 innings. Wisconsin did get a pair of runners on with a single and a walk when there were two outs in the bottom of the sixth. But, Ferrara got out of the inning with the 3-0 lead intact. He struck out six in the game.

The Bandits added on in the seventh. Geoff Klein's two-out, two-run double made the score 5-0. Then, Jonathan Rodriguez hit a long solo homer in the top of the eighth for a 6-0 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Wisconsin loaded the bases against Dean Kiekhefer with a one out double by Greg Hopkins, a single by Reggie Keen, and a two-out walk to Franklin Romero, Jr. But, Kiekhefer closed out the game with a grounder to first.

The loss was the third straight for the Rattlers.

Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. Brooks Hall (5-4, 3.44) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Quad Cities has Ryan Copeland (4-2, 4.04) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 1:05 PM.

Sunday is a Brewers Sunday presented by 107.5, The Fan. Before the game, fans may play catch on the field presented by momslikeme.com. During the game, the Timber Rattlers players will be wearing jerseys and caps based on those of the 1975 Milwaukee Brewers. After the game, players will be available for a post-game autograph session. Time Warner Cable subscribers may bring in their bill and receive up to four half priced reserve seat tickets on Sunday.

If you can't make it to Time Warner Cable Field, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:45 PM. Sunday's game is also available on MiLB.TV.

Wisconsin Box Score

Not dominance, but respectability from Eric Arnett -- having been away for a funeral this past week, worked past that as well, good luck next time out, sir; offensive funk throughout, Mike Brownstein the only Rattler to reach more than once...

4 hits and 7 Ks in 6 IP and 7:3 GO/FO is a very good start for Arnett. 3 BB in 6 IP is not.

While Marzec is on the older side for A-ball, so far this year in 56 innings he has given up 36 hits, walked 31 (cause for some concern), and struck out 60 with a 1.51 GO/AO and 1.60 ERA. Similar numbers in rookie ball last year. I'm hoping the walks are being "effectively wild", but he's striking people out and getting ground balls which bodes well for future performance.
