Final: AZL Diamondbacks 5, @AZL Brewers 3

6'4" lefty Will West, signed as an undrafted free agent out of high school this summer, continues to intrigue, today posting a 7/0 K/BB and a 5/1 GO/FO in his four innings of work, though he allowed three unearned runs; he owns a 27/5 K/BB in 23 innings now. The Brewers committed five errors in total. Hitaniel Arias had two hits and a double for the second straight game, and Jimmie Pharr followed up yesterday's two-homer game with his first career triple. Malcolm Dowell, back in center, was 0-3 with a walk, and Michael Reed, taking over in left, was 0-4; each fanned twice.
Rather interesting 1st inning, in which West struck out the side around some mayhem:

AZL D-backs Top of the 1st
  • Pedro Ruiz singles on a ground ball to shortstop Renaldo Jenkins. Pedro Ruiz advances to 2nd, on throwing error by shortstop Renaldo Jenkins.
  • With John Leonard batting, Pedro Ruiz advances to 3rd on a balk.
  • John Leonard called out on strikes.
  • Socrates Brito reaches on a fielder's choice, fielded by third baseman Andres Martinez. Pedro Ruiz scores.
  • With Joseph Weik batting, Socrates Brito steals (12) 2nd base.
  • With Joseph Weik batting, Socrates Brito steals (13) 3rd base.
  • Joseph Weik strikes out swinging.
  • Wagner Mateo strikes out swinging.

More fun in the new West:

AZL D-backs Top of the 3rd
  • Pedro Ruiz reaches on fielding error by second baseman Kevin Berard.
  • With John Leonard batting, Pedro Ruiz steals (4) 2nd base.
  • With John Leonard batting, wild pitch by Will West, Pedro Ruiz to 3rd.
  • John Leonard singles on a fly ball to right fielder Ronny Puello. Pedro Ruiz scores.
  • With Socrates Brito batting, wild pitch by Will West, John Leonard to 2nd.
  • Socrates Brito called out on strikes.
  • Joseph Weik flies out to left fielder Michael Reed.
  • Wagner Mateo singles on a fly ball to left fielder Michael Reed. John Leonard scores. Wagner Mateo to 2nd on the throw.
  • Pat Donahue strikes out swinging.

Will West is really starting to excite me. He attended Georgia Tech, but transferred after one semester to Tallahassee Community College and was redshirted. I wonder the reason for leaving. Due to him coming home maybe it was homesickness but who knows. I like everything I have read on him so far. Here is a scouting report from his Junior year of high school. (my guess is with his size and 2-3 yrs older he works in high 80's maybe low 90's.) And also a quote from that article in the transaction tread on him.

PG National Showcase 2009

Will West is a 2010 LHP with a 6'3'', 170 lb. frame from Tallahassee, FL who attends North Florida Christian HS. Tall lean athletic body, some lower half strength/width. Balanced delivery, pretty smooth, high 3/4's extended release. CB best pitch, hard spin, downer shape, consistent release/location, has confidence in CB and he should. FB lower 80's, touched 84 mph, have seen a bit better at other places, rare change up, but shows promise, needs to throw more. He can really pitch, possible big winner at next level

Article Quote

Brewers area scout Ryan Robinson watched West in high school and was impressed by his poise and potential.

"The chances of him getting better are really good," said Robinson, who signed West. "He has a body (that projects well) and a really loose arm. He really knows how to pitch. Every time you saw him, you just thought he had a really good feel for pitching."
He sounds like and has pitched like someone who be a huge steal. For some reason Jed Bradley keeps popping in my head. Similar size (Bradley was little heavier at age), both only were throwing in the 84-85 range in HS, both had really good off-speed stuff to off-set lack of velocity, both south paws, and just knows how to pitch. Also both were not drafted out of hs. I'm not say he will be the next Bradley or better but could become a really good prospect. Just turned 19 and would be just going into sophomore year of college. Ton of time to grow and improve.

Final (game one): @Brevard County 5, Lakeland 4 (13 innings)

The first nine and a half innings are written up here. BC did not capitalize on their 10th inning opportunity but did eventually prevail. Six of the Sea Cows ended up with two hits, but not among them were D'Vontrey Richardson (0-5, SF, 4 K) and Hunter Morris (0-6). Ouch. Roque Mercedes twirled four wonderful innings of relief to pick up the win, allowing just one hit over four innings while fanning five and walking none.

How it didn't end:

Brevard County Bottom of the 10th
  • Pitcher Change: Kenny Faulk replaces Luke Putkonen.
  • Juan Sanchez singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Kenny Faulk.
  • Scooter Gennett singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Kenny Faulk. Juan Sanchez to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Zach Samuels replaces Kenny Faulk.
  • Kentrail Davis grounds into a force out, first baseman Tony Plagman to third baseman Wade Gaynor. Juan Sanchez out at 3rd. Scooter Gennett to 2nd. Kentrail Davis to 1st.
  • D' Vontrey Richardson strikes out swinging.
  • With Hunter Morris batting, Scooter Gennett caught stealing 3rd base, catcher Rob Brantly to third baseman Wade Gaynor.

How it did:

Brevard County Bottom of the 13th
  • Kentrail Davis singles on a ground ball to center fielder Michael Rockett.
  • D' Vontrey Richardson called out on strikes.
  • Hunter Morris flies out to left fielder Shawn Roof.
  • With Shea Vucinich batting, wild pitch by Zach Samuels, Kentrail Davis to 2nd.

Final (game two): @Brevard County 6, Lakeland 5 (7 innings)

Nice doubleheader sweep. This one wasn't a walk-off win, but BC did score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 6th. Mark Rogers was better than he's been in awhile, despite the run total: 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 1 HR. Hunter Morris and Chris Dennis each went deep; that's Morris's first homer in awhile. Morris, Dennis, and D'Vontrey Richardson each had two knocks.

Brevard County play-by-play

Huge hit by Juan Sanchez:

Brevard County Bottom of the 4th
  • D' Vontrey Richardson singles on a line drive to center fielder Michael Rockett.
  • Hunter Morris singles on a line drive to right fielder Avisail Garcia. D' Vontrey Richardson to 3rd.
  • Shea Vucinich singles on a fly ball to center fielder Michael Rockett. D' Vontrey Richardson scores. Hunter Morris to 2nd.
  • Chuck Caufield out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Trevor Feeney to first baseman Jordan Lennerton. Hunter Morris to 3rd. Shea Vucinich to 2nd.
  • Trevor Feeney intentionally walks Chris Dennis.
  • Brent Dean strikes out swinging.
  • Juan Sanchez doubles (9) on a ground ball to left fielder Tony Plagman. Hunter Morris scores. Shea Vucinich scores. Chris Dennis scores. Juan Sanchez out at 3rd on the throw, left fielder Tony Plagman to catcher Eric Roof to third baseman Wade Gaynor.

Important sweep for the Manatees in a very mediocre division for the second half chase. Brewers really, really hoping there's a postseason opportunity for Rickie Weeks to rehab somewhere -- final Brevard regular season game is 9/4. If Weeks' injury takes him to the far end of the 2-6 week timeframe, as many of us imagine it will...

'Tees take two from Lakeland

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. -- The Brevard County Manatees (47-64 overall, 20-21 second half) swept the Lakeland Flying Tigers (54-58, 18-24) in an unique doubleheader on Monday night. The 'Tees won the suspended game from Sunday in 13 innings, by the score of 5-4 and then won the second game, 6-5.

GAME ONE - Brevard County 5, Lakeland 4 (13 innings)

Shea Vucinich singled home Kentrail Davis in the bottom of the 13th to give the Manatees a 5-4 win, early Monday evening in a game that began at 4:39 PM on Sunday.

Play from Sunday was suspended due to inclement weather in the bottom of the 10th inning, when the 'Tees had two runners on with no outs, but were unable to end the game right away, when play resumed on Monday.

Davis led the 13th off with a single and would reach second on a wild pitch with two outs. Vucinich proceeded to knock in Davis and end game one.

The game started on Sunday with Tyler Thornburg on the mound and while he went six innings and struck out eight, he gave up four runs on three hits and five walks.

Eric Marzec relieved Thornburg and while he walked three batters, he was able to keep Lakeland from scoring for three innings.

Roque Mercedes entered the game in the 10th and came back to the mound when the game was restarted and threw four innings and struck out five, while allowing just one hit.

Davis, Vucinich, Scooter Gennett, Chuck Caufield, Shawn Zarraga and Scott Krieger all had two hits each as Brevard County pounded out 13 total.

GAME TWO - Brevard County 6, Lakeland 5 (7 innings)

Mark Rogers struck out seven in five innings of work and Hunter Morris hit the eventual game-winning home run in the bottom of the sixth as the 'Tees took game two from Lakeland, 6-5.

Rogers allowed four runs (all earned) on six hits and one walk in five innings of work.

Down 2-1 in the fourth, the 'Tees plated four in the frame with Shea Vucinich driving in D'Vontrey Richardson with an RBI single and Juan Sanchez driving in three with a bases-clearing double with two outs. Sanchez was thrown out at third trying to extend it to a triple, to end the big inning.

A two-run, two-out homer by Wade Gaynor in the top of the fifth off of Rogers cut the deficit to 5-4. Lakeland would tie the game in the top of the sixth off of Evan Anundsen on an RBI groundout by Shawn Roof.

The Manatees would take the lead back on the first pitch that they saw in the bottom of the sixth as Hunter Morris homered to make it a 6-5 game. It was his 15th home run of the season.

Anundsen retired the side in the seventh, as the 'Tees took game two and completed the sweep of both the doubleheader and the three-game series from the Flying Tigers.

Morris, Richardson and Chris Dennis all had two hits each. Dennis also hit his second homer of the season in the second inning.

UP NEXT:

Brevard County moved into fourth place in the North division's second half standings. The 'Tees are just 2 1/2 games out of first place.

The Manatees will travel to Dunedin for a three-game series against the Blue Jays. Brevard County is just 4-11 against Dunedin (62-52, 23-21) in 2011.

Hiram Burgos (3-7, 4.80) will start for the 'Tees in the series opener.

Following their series with Dunedin, Brevard County will travel to Lakeland for a three-game set, with a doubleheader scheduled for Friday.

The Manatees will return home to Space Coast Stadium on Sunday, August 14 to host the Flying Tigers for a doubleheader that will begin at 4:05 PM.

Final: Nashville 6, @Reno 4

Nashville Has Won 12 Of Their Last 16 Road Games

RENO, Nev. - The Nashville Sounds scored six unanswered runs in a come-from-behind, 6-4 victory over the Reno Aces on Monday night at Aces Ballpark, highlighted by a go-ahead, two-run homer by Taylor Green in the top of the ninth inning.

Entering the ninth trailing 4-3, outfielder Logan Schafer singled off pitcher Sam Demel to lead off the frame and advanced to second on a Lucas May passed ball. Schafer would then score the tying run as Eric Farris ripped an RBI single over the second baseman's head into right field. Green followed by hammering a two-run homer down the right field line for his 20th of the season.

The win was Nashville's (58-59) ninth come-from-behind victory when trailing in the 7th inning of later this season and 12th last at-bat win.

Schafer, Green and Jordan Brown all had two hits in the game, while Mat Gamel extended his hitting streak to eight games with a hit in the ninth.

The Aces batted around and scored all four runs on Sounds starter Sam Narron in the bottom of the second, who threw 34 pitches in the frame. May doubled home former Sounds outfielder Cole Gillespie for the first run. A two-out RBI double from pitcher Barry Enright, followed by RBI singles by Evan Frey and Mark Hallberg accounted for the club's other runs for an early 4-0 advantage.

Narron worked a leadoff walk to open the third inning and moved to second as Schafer bunted a perfectly-placed grounder down the third base line. Narron advanced to third on a Brown groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly when Farris belted a fly ball to center field.

Martin Maldonado brought the Sounds within one run at 4-3 in the next inning, as the backstop blasted an opposite-field two-run homer over the right field wall. Edwin Maysonet reached earlier in the frame after being hit by a pitch from Enright and scored on Maldonado's third homer in his last four games.

Narron surrendered four runs in five innings pitched, all in the second inning. The tall left-hander also gave up eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

In his first game since coming off the disabled list, right-hander Sean Green struck out two in a scoreless inning. For a third consecutive day, right-hander Donovan Hand pitched a scoreless appearance. Zack Segovia (5-3) picked up the win while adding a perfect inning. Randy Flores worked around a hit while striking out two to notch his first save of the season.

Enright tossed a quality start in a no-decision, allowing three runs on six hits in six innings. Sam Demel (0-3) took home the blown save and loss with three runs in the ninth.

The Sounds and Aces continue their four-game series at 9:05 pm CT on Tuesday night at Aces Ballpark. Right-hander Mike Fiers (4-0, 1.73) will take the mound for Nashville and face Reno right-hander Kevin Mulvey (3-5, 6.98)

Nashville Box Score

Farris & Brown completed a double-steal of 3B & 2B in the seventh inning, while Maldonado threw out the only Aces attempted basestealer of the game in the first. Maysonet & Caleb Gindl each walked twice; Gindl otherwise went 0-3. Erick Almonte, Brandon Boggs, & Andy/Angel Gonzalez were all retired in their only pinch-hit appearances.

Gonzalez is listed as Andy now at Nashville; he'd been listed as "Angel" while with the Stars. Apologies if this has already been covered. Gonzalez could actually be a September callup candidate, as he walked 31 times over 147 ABs in AA this season, with a 1-1 K/BB ratio. He's been with the Sounds for 14 games so far, and if he's a solid defender, he could probably help (listed at 6'3" & 215 lbs., I have to wonder if he has the range for the position... hope he does).

Mugarian Masterful on Moustache Monday

By Nicholas Allen

The fourth time's a charm.

Billings starter Wes Mugarian entered Monday's game 0-2 with a 10.66 ERA in three starts against the Brewers. Monday was a different story as Mugarian shut down Helena, tossing six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out nine in the victory.

Tommy Toledo (0-2) went five innings for the Brewers, shutting out Billings in the first four before surrendering back-to-back homers to Kyle Waldrop and Ryan Wright to start the fifth. Kevin Shackelford relieved Toledo in the sixth, allowing one run on two hits and Seth Harvey went the final three innings, allowing just three hits and one walk and striking out five. John Dishon had three of Helena's four hits on the evening, raising his average to .308 on the year.

The teams wrap up a two-game set Tuesday at Kindrick Legion Field, Government Tuesday.

Helena Box Score

Parker Berberet doubled for the only other Helena hit. If one other Brewers player had to be the one to get a hit on Mustache Night, it had to be Parker.

Harvey put up another impressive line, with his fourth straight scoreless outing. In that span of games: 9 IP, 7 H, 2 BB, 15 K

Helena Play-by-Play

Berberet also shifted to catcher after Tyler Roberts got tossed in the 8th:

Billings Top of the 8th
  • Kurtis Muller doubles (7) on a ground ball to left fielder Benjamin McMahan.
  • Defensive switch from first base to catcher for Parker Berberet.
  • Defensive Substitution: Gant Elmore replaces catcher Tyler Roberts, batting 7th, playing second base.
  • Defensive switch from third base to first base for Michael Nemeth.
  • Defensive switch from second base to third base for Adrian Williams.

Mustangs hand Brewers 6th straight loss

Helena Independent Record

It started out as a scoreless pitcher’s duel through the first four innings between the Billings Mustangs and Helena Brewers on Monday.

Helena starter Tommy Toledo had given up three hits and struck out six through four, while Billings hurler Wes Mugarian was even better, working on a one-hitter.

Then, with nary a cloud in the sky, lightning struck twice for the Mustangs, as Kyle Waldrop and Ryan Wright jacked the fifth frame’s first two pitches over the fence for back-to-back home runs.

Billings (27-26) added a run in the sixth, and went on to a 3-0 Northern Division Pioneer League win at Kindrick Legion Field.

It was the Brewers’ (20-27) sixth straight loss, and the first time they’ve been shutout all year.

Mugarian, a 6-foot-1, 185-pounder from Pensacola, Fla., carried a no-hitter into the fourth. At that point, he had struck out seven Brewers’ batsmen, including the last five in a row.

Mugarian then lost his no-no when the next man he faced, John Dishon, led off the fourth stanza with a single.

But the slow-working 19-year old – who was drafted by Cincinnati in the fifth round – went on to pitch a masterpiece. Before being relieved by Ryan Kemp, Mugarian went six innings and allowing just two hits. He finished with nine Ks and gave up only two bases on balls.

A graduate of Pensacola Catholic High, Mugarian passed up a baseball scholarship to the University of Alabama to turn pro.

The visitors outhit the Brewers 11-4, led by Kurtis Muller, who went 3 for 4, with a double. Magic City teammates with two base raps each were Waldrop, Wright and Junior Arias. Wright added a two-bagger to go along with his dinger.

Dishon had the big night for the hosts, going 3-4, with a double.

Helena’s other base knock was a double by Parker Berberet.

Berberet, normally the Capital City’s first baseman, was called into action behind the plate in the eighth inning, after regular catcher Tyler Roberts was ejected for arguing a fair ball call.

Berberet’s arm passed its first test in the ninth, when he gunned down Waldrop on an attempted steal of second.

Toledo went five innings and took the loss, giving up six hits and striking out seven.

Seth Harvey worked the last three scoreless stanzas for the Brewers, permitting three hits and fanning five.

The contest was a well-played defensive show. Neither team committed an error, with Billings turning two double plays, and manager Joe Aryault’s Brewers performing three twin-killings.
