Transferring Video from DVR to PC

I am a little bit of a novice when it comes to technology. I have a DVR with Direct TV and was wondering what I need to transfer my movies to my home PC. Do I need special software or just some cable?

 

Also, if I wanted to burn them to DVD, what is the best software to do that?

The easiest program to use is Microsoft Movie Maker. I use much more complicated programs to make the DVD highlight films, but I still capture all of the video using Movie Maker.

 

I use a Canopus device to loop my VCRs to my computer, most Digital Recorders have a firewire or USB port on them now and can hook right up to the computer. I haven't looked at my DVR, it may or may not have a USB output on it. My hunch is that I would just need the appropriate RCA cables to loop my DVR the same way I do the VCR. Basically it's no different than hooking up 2 VCRs together or looping all of your electronics through a component system, so if you can handle that you can handle this. Canopus site below.

There are also certain video cards that allow you to watch TV on your computer, they should work the same way. I'm unsure if you can capture the input off of those as I've never tried, but the theory is sound.
