In honor of Craig Counsell's base hit -- "The Chicken Runs at Midnight"

I've done a couple google searches and can't find the original story that retraces the story. I thought my girlfriend (a novice with baseball) might find it interesting after she was interested in the McGehee--Clayton story. I see a Kurkijan article in 2010, but I thought the original story was written about a decade ago. Can you please help find it?

Here is the most comprehensive one I could find that was written prior to the Kurkjian article, but it's surely not the original.

 

EDIT: found a news article from 10/23/97 via Google News. That's gotta be damn near the original.
