Pat Burrell

The search for a competent power bat off the bench continues...

Speculation from Andrew Baggarly (Giants beat writer) that Burrell could be released. His slash line is actually not that bad - .233/.342./.419 (.761 OPS), and definitely can still hit bombs...only 34 years old, too. I hope the Crew performs due diligence.

I don't think so. Burrell is one of those guys who needs regular playing time. He's also never done well in DH role. He's had 663 plate appearances as a DH and he's hit a paltry .209/.306/.348. Heck Josh Wilson could do that.

Once Weeks returns, the bench will be stronger with Hairston and Lopez. Gomez figures to be back in early September too. They could use a lefty with some pop like a Giambi or a Thome, but I don't see Burrell being much help.

I was thinking that if the Brewers are just dead set against playing Gamel, that Hart could go to 1B next year (as he should) and sign Burrell to play a COF spot.....and then I thought about how much worse the defense could be......and how the Brewers need to stop playing horrible defenders at 6 of the 8 spots around the field, and decided it wouldn't be a good idea after all.

I DO think Burrell's a candidate for a bounce back year next year. Playing in SF as a righty surely didn't help his slash stats.
