Fan of Division Rival Here. Supporting Brewers.

First off, a HUGE thank you to the "powers that be" for approving me to be able to post. As I explained in my application I am a lifelong Reds fan. Always will be. But I just LOVE baseball and LOVE to talk baseball. I spent about an hour here at work tonight reading through your forums and liked what I saw. A bunch of decent, knowledgeable Brewer fans. Not here to talk smack/trash. I'm not a trash talker at all. Just here to officially throw my support (as if I am someone of any relevance to ya'll) behind the Brewers for the rest of the season. Of COURSE I'd love to see my team make a miracle run during the remainder of the season and finish on top but 1) they won't. Not the way they've been playing 2) they don't deserve it. Love my team but will not defend them at all costs. I'll praise them when they deserve it and I'll call them out when they need to be called out. I will let my hatred for the Cardinals be known. Mostly their manager and a handful of their players, but hold nothing against their fans. With the exception of a maybe a handful. I wish you and your team luck for the rest of the season and look forward to talking baseball with all of you!! Scott

Scott,

Welcome! This is a great forum for baseball, so you should feel at home. We have at least one other Reds fan here (maybe more?). I am becoming more of a Reds fan because of their history the Big Red Machine!), their fans, and Brandon Phillips (calling like it is). I've even started reading some of redszone.com.

Thanks for the welcome man! I can already tell I'm going to like it here! I am 42 years old and believe it or not, despite my undying love for my Reds and baseball in general, I've yet to participate on a Reds message board/forum. I'm NOT painting with a broad brush here but it's hard to stomach some Cincinnati fans. No matter what sport. A lot of them are never happy with ANYTHING. As far as Philips goes.....my favorite current Red, by far. A lot of outsiders have ill feelings for him and I can see why. I guess.....but, he is a terrific dude. Just a great all around guy on and off the field. He is just out there having fun and not trying to cause problems. Well, with the exception of the Cardinal comment last season lol He is a GREAT asset to the city as well as the game of baseball.

Well, you might find a few people here like that, but not all of us. Nice to have you aboard (not to mention someone else born in the 1960s).

Brandon Phillips, for me, falls into that category of "players I'd probably love if they were on my team, but they're not, so..." Had a Brewer said what he said about STL last season, I'd have been wincing on the outside and cheering on the inside, though.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I certainly did wince when I heard the quote that night on the news lol but I certainly agree with everything that was said by him. And they just keep proving Brandon right day by day by day by day...........

The preceding is Crazy Old Man approved.

http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I think thats becoming the feelings of more and more baseball fans across the board. Especially after the series with you guys.

Hi Scott-

Reds stuff that I know...

1. Barry Larkin should have already been elected to the Hall of Fame.

2. I know Vada Pinson III. V3 is proud of his dad, period, but he constantly raves about his father's time with the Reds.

3. Marge Schott refused to sign Rollie Fingers, unless he shaved off the mustache, to comply with team policy....yes, really.

4. Herm Winningham, a good and decent man, is still haunted by the death of his best friend, Mike Sharperson. (footnote...Sharperson was on base for the Gibson HR off Eckersley..."I do not believe what I just saw...)

5. I've met groups of Reds fans in Milwaukee several times....every time they've been fun people to be around. I cannot say the same for half of the Cubs fans I've been stuck sitting close to.

Thanks for the response splitter!
1. I agree with you 110%
He came back to Cincy last Sunday night with ESPN for the Sunday Night Game. Me, my wife and boys were down by their set before game time and the love the fans showed him gave me goosebumps. There were some hard feelings between Larkin/The Reds/SOME fans for a while but the welcome he received last Sunday night was a BEAUTIFUL thing.

2. Pinson is a very loved man with older Reds fans. A little before my time but I've heard my father and grandfather rave about the man. Certainly a vital piece of Reds lore.

3. While a very rich and giving woman, Marge was a little too old school and uneducated when it came to running a MLB team lol She meant well at all times however. You're talking about a woman who made Eric Davis pay for his own flight back to Cincy after suffering the kidney laceration diving for a ball in Oakland during the '90 WS. He remained in the hospital when the team flew back to Cincy for the next game.

4. Herm was certainly never a superstar but I always liked Herm. Always seemed like a good dude and always played hard.

5. I'd say MOST fans of most teams are decent, I know that I've encountered opposing team fan on all my trips to games over the years and have always enjoyed those encounters. With the exception of a few weeks ago during the Cardinals series. The wife and I went down to the game where Philips hit the walk off HR (landing about 5 rows in front of us) and our whole section was filled with St. Louis fans. The majority of which were very pompous "you know whats" so it was nice to be able to walk out of there seeing their heads down and their mouths quiet http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Scott, welcome to the message board. Always nice to have good knowledgeable fans of other teams. In case you haven't figured it out, the Wisconsin sports fans are pretty knowledgeable and very passionate. We loyally support our Packers and Brewers, and unlike fans in some markets, we truly think of ourselves as parts of the teams (heck, many of us are owners of the Packers). Along with our loyalty is that we generally turn out well for our teams.

By the way, have you been to Miller Park? If not, I'm sure some brewerfan folks would welcome you with a Wisconsin-style tailgate....unfortunately I live in Arizona.

Welcome, and look forward to reading your insights (and FYI, the Reds scare me most in the Central. We've beaten the Cards the last few years, we've crushed the Pirates, but the Reds are a team we haven't been able to handle).

Thanks for the picture splitter. My first reaction was to say "awesome picture." Unfortunately....a picture I've seen one too many times over the years. Same picture, different face in this particular one. Very sad period in baseball and a very sad period in society in general.

Hey D!
Brewer/Badger/Packer fans have always struck me as such!

While I have been to Wisconsin once (and only for a few days) I have not been fortunate enough to visit Miller Park. Travelling to other baseball parks is something I've always wanted to do, but having been a single Father to two kids MOST of my adult life, I havent been fortunate, financially, to do so. Both my children have been involved with "select" sports since early ages so between everyday expenses and the costs for them to participate, I've not been fortunate to "build the bank" up for those kind of things. I am currently married to a baseball lover and we've talked about doing these kind of things once our kids finish up school and graduate. I sure wish you guys would let us in on the formula to beating the Cards and the Pirates because we've had a hard time handling both the past few seasons. Especially the Bucs THIS season lol
Look forward to interacting with you here!

Scott:

Welcome to BF.net. It's nice to have you.

Having a Reds fan stop by brings up two memories from the past- one in Cincinnati and one in Milwaukee.

Back in July 2002, my wife and I and two friends took a baseball trip. We took in a single A game in Beloit, drove to Louisville to tour the Louisville Slugger factory, and then on to Cincinnati. We also saw a game in Indy to watch the AAA affiliate. Anyways, we spent July 4 at Cinergy to watch the Brewer-Reds game had a great time. That was Milwaukee's 56-win team (or 106 loss team, depending on how you look at it), so our odds of seeing a good win were slight.

For those Brewer fans who need a reminder of how good we have it today, check out this box score, but only if you haven't eaten in the last hour: July 4, 2002 Box Score

A few memories from that game:

  • Riverfront/Cinergy was pretty worn when we saw it. Tho that might have been skewed by seeing Marge Schott wandering the concourse, as she was pretty worn too.
  • During our pre-game walk around the stadium, one of the guys with us (Madbad2000) caught a BP home run off Austin Kearns.
  • Speaking of home runs, that Reds team had four guys with awesome pure power: Jr Griffey, Dunn, Branyan and Will Mo Pena.
  • The fans were great even tho we were the "enemy". Maybe the felt sorry for us.
  • Eric Young had a 2-out, 2-rbi double off Reds closer Denny Graves, scoring all-time Brewer greats Paul Bako and Alex Sanchez. EY's double gave the Brewers a 5-4 lead, allowing another all-time Brewer great, Mike DeJean, to get the save. With the win, the Brewers improved their record to 32-53 and pulled within 4 games of 5th place Chicago and 16.5 games of first place St. Louis.

My other memory is from May of 2003 at Miller Park, the Brewerfan.net FanFest "Sea Biscut" game.

Sea Biscut Walk Off- May 17, 2003 Box Score

My only real memory from that game was Eddie Perez's walk-off three run homer. Probably because that was another 95+ loss team.

Ah, the good ole days http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Welcome again to BF.net. And thanks for spurring my and tolerating my walk down memory lane.

Chris

Welcome aboard. There are a lot of smart baseball fans here and it's always a fun and enlightening read.

Vada Pinson is one my favorite players of all time.I was born in 1960, so remember him a little--had his baseball cards. For his 10 peak seasons in Cincy he posted a career .811 OPS. That covered the 1960's, one of the biggest pitcher's era in baseball. Played a great CF, and was fast as lightening. 2700+ hits, 300+ SB, 250+ home runs. The guy should be in the Hall of Fame, imho.

Here's an interesting article I found about him: http://miscbaseball.wordp...remembering-vada-pinson/

Here are the only players with at least 2000 hits by age 30. Interesting group that includes Pinson, a guy I would think most people would be surpirsed to see on this list. Also a nice Brewer tie in with Robin.

Welcome, to the Reds fan. A little surprised that you are convinced that the Reds are out of it with this much time left in the season. Granted they are 7.5 games out, but considering the talent level of the Reds it certainly isn't out of the realm of possibilities for them to make a run.

Welcome! I don't remember Pinson, but I seem to be from the next decade of those that do. But Barry Larkin was awesome - at least his first name - no personal bias, I'm sure. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Without a bit of homer-ism, I can say that bf.net is a really great forum that is obviously Brewer-slanted, but also has a lot of intelligent BB discussion. I've learned a lot here. And the mods do a great job keeping it on the clean and level. *hat tip*

Before I respond any further......it has been kindly pointed out to me that I was quoted as saying "thx man!" in response to a welcome post from Hawing. I was informed that Hawing was a woman and I feel 1, 342, 826 kinds of stupid http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif

I obviously do not think sometimes before I get my fingers moving and just wanted to apologize to her.

"tolerating" your walk down memory lane? no way! I WELCOME it!
As I've said.....I'm a huge baseball fan. In love with the game. I'll walk down the memory lane of baseball with you guys anytime you want to. I don't have the greatest memory in the world and I can't spit out historical facts of baseball like a lot of you probably can but I love this game and the memories I have of it (especially from the 70's and early 80's) bring a smile to my face on a daily basis. I can't spout out a lot of history about the Brewers but I can tell you that Robin Yount and Paul Molitor were two of my favorites growing up. Mr. Fingers also. The baseball cards of Cecil Cooper and Gorman Thomas are still two of my favorites for some reason. I just remember always liked seeing those cards lol I've never HATED any team in baseball (although the Cards are close) because each and every one of those teams, pre-expansion, make my love for baseball what it is, In one way or another. If that makes any sense at all.

As I've said in another thread....
If our kids were playing good, sound fundamental baseball......I may admit that there is/was a shot BUT......In the position they are in and the fact that it's August, you cant expect to pull yourselves out of #+%++% when you miss cutoff men, make boneheaded base running decisions, throw to the wrong base (giving up an extra base to your opponent) etc etc etc. Their heads are NOT into the ballgames. The 13 year old select baseball team that I coach play a better fundamental game than these guys do right now. History shows there is still hope, I guess, but not the way we've been playing all year. It's not been pretty from a fundamental standpoint. Just calling it as I see it on a night in/night out basis http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

and then throw in todays loss to the Cubbies. More of the same mental errors. It pains me to say but....It's officially a two team race. In the past 5 days we have lost 3 of 4 to the NLCentral bottom feeders.
