Wireless Networking Question

NeedMoreFans

Quick question for the computer guys...

I get 15Mbps internet from Charter. I connect my laptop and blu-ray player to a wireless router. I have been noticing that the videos I stream, especially on my computer, are pretty low in quality (it's most noticeable when I watch sports on ESPN 3 on the internet). So I did a speed test on a couple different websites, including Charter's. I am getting between 2-3Mbps on my laptop. I can't test the blu-ray player, but I'm sure it's similar. I connected the computer directly to the modem, and I got 15Mbps.

My question...can I increase the speed I get on my computer and blu-ray player by simply upgrading my router? Or do I need to upgrade my wireless card in my computer as well? My router is fairly old...3-4 years old. It can broadcast both b and g signals (if that is the proper terminology), but my wireless can receive a, b, and g. If updating the router is the solution, what type of router do I need to get faster speeds on my laptop?

One thing you may want to look into before buying a new router is to upgrade the firmware on your current one, as well as the driver for your wireless card.

Most new wireless routers are n enabled, so if you go that route make sure that the wireless card in your laptop is n enabled as well. If not, the card would also have to be upgraded as well.
