Matt Stairs?

Recommended Posts

I'd much rather see Green or Gamel. I think Stairs is done.

I think you are missing his point. While Stairs is likely done, a veteran LH bat to bring up late in games is certainly better use of a roster spot than is Wilson or certainly Counsell.

Here's 3 to ponder: Hideki Matsui, Jason Giambi, Jim Thome

No, I get the point. I would rather have Green or Gamel pinch hit late in games than Matt Stairs, Counsell or Wilson. I think the veteran factor is sometimes overrated.

However I also would like Giambi, Thome or Matsui, and I've posted that in their topics.

Thome makes sense, but there are a few issues. First the Twins have been pushing the 600 homer angle like the Brewers did with Hoffman's saves last season. No way they trade him until he gets there, and if/when that happens, I'd say that the odds are fairly long that he gets traded immediately after- unless he wants to finish with a contender. Not only that, but due to his low salary, I'd be surprised if he didn't get claimed on waivers before he gets to the Brewers (I don't see him getting past Cleveland). I'd be on board with Giambi as well, but no way he doesn't get claimed, since he's only making a few hundred thousand the rest of the way. Matsui might slip through waivers, so he may be the most likely target.

I agree. I don't see Thome getting past Boston or New York either............

Giambi and Matsui I have little interest in.

Stairs has officially announced his retirement. He had quite a career. Reflecting on his one season as a Brewer, as bad as that team was, Stairs was certainly underused. He hit 16 HR in 270 AB's, which was about 200 fewer AB's than he would have had on that team had he started against every RHP which on that team was a no-brainer for anyone but Jerry Royster apparently. His HR rate would have resulted in 28 that year under that scenario, and might have resulted in a couple more wins.

I remember Stairs starting out badly for the Brewers. He heated up as the season went on and put up pretty good numbers. I thought he was done for a while when he was with the Brewers, but he went on playing another ten years. He had a pretty nice career all in all.
