Overbay DFA'd...will we show interest?

Recommended Posts

This is mildly surprising. Is Lee much of an upgrade at first? As for the Brewers, I don't really see a spot for him. As others say, if he's still around in a few weeks, I'd give him a minor league deal with the promise of a call up on 9/1. He'd be a decent PH guy down the stretch. I think he can probably do better though.

I'd rather trade for Matsui, Giambi or Thome to be that late inning threat off the bench.

Overbay, Thome or Giambi would be nice and a HUGE upgrade but I think any addition to replace Kotsay would have to almost certainly have the ability to play the OF. This pretty much limits it to Matsui or someone of his ilk.

Face it (because I have), for whatever reason Melvin and RR love Kotsay and Counsell's "veteran presence" in the clubhouse and forget that neither of them are good baseball players anymore. So, they forsake having the best players on the team that they can to keep their 'gritty' vets who can't hit worth a lick.

there's no versatility with Overbay, and the only way Fielder is going to take a day off is if he's chained in his home. i'd like him off the bench, but for the amount of playing time he'd see, there's really no point in picking him up.

Overbay has just been released by Pittsburgh after being DFA'd several days ago. Pittsburgh will owe him his full 5 million this year and he can sign with anyone for just the minimum now. Has he played sporadically at a corner OF spot? Heck, Josh Wilson was able to do it. I'd like to get his bat on our bench for the minimum if we can somehow have it make sense...

What bat? If he were to replace Counsell sure that would be OK but anyone else no thanks. Overbay can play 1B and that is it and I will take Kotsay over Overbay. At least Kotsay can play in the OF while Overbay can not.

Overbay could probably match the "defense" Kotsay brings.

I highly doubt that.
I'd take Kotsay's offense and defense over Overbay's at any position. Overbay hasn't had more than 70 RBI in a season since 2006. He's probably home counting the money he "earned" which was a lot for a guy as non productive as Overbay.

ZiPS ROS Projection:[/b]
Overbay: .243/.325/.404
Kotsay: .259/.307/.370

I would prefer Overbay as a pinch hitter or at first base. I would prefer neither play the outfield for the Brewers.

Not in the majors, but in the minors, he had 5 games in the outfield (exact spot unknown) with Missoula, and 25 games in the outfield in El Paso (exact position unknown).

He's played, but the El Paso time is his most recent, and that was in `01.

But Kotsay hasn't had more than 70 RBI in a season since 2005, so Overbay is better.

Counsell now has two hits in the past week and Kotsay had an RBI in the first inning yesterday while filling in for Braun (and of course hitting #3), so they're all but cemented onto the roster. If we added a Morneau-type bat off the bench, he'd be our 3rd PH option.

Kidding aside, I highly doubt we touch Overbay. God forbid something happen to Fielder, I'd rather have Gamel called up.
