Derrek Lee to Pittsburgh

The Pirates have traded for 1st baseman Derrek Lee and cash of the Orioles to replace Lyle Overbay in exchange for minor league 1st baseman Aaron Baker.

 

Lee, 35, was hitting .248/.306/.409 with 15 doubles, 12 home runs and 41 RBIs.

I don't think Baker was much of a prospect, but does Lee really make them much better? This doesn't make a whole lot of sense. the Pirates have already started to slide (3 1/2 back now), and their schedule doesn't look favorable from here on out.

I think so. Lee's numbers are a bit skewed since he did spend some time on the DL. He has also heated up as of late:

 

In his last 18 games, he has batted .309 with 11 extra-base hits and 16 RBIs.

 

Overbay meanwhile is batting only .227 this season which is pretty horrible.

 

Of course I think they need pitching since they are sending nobodies up there who are starting to come back to earth.

It's a huge improvement from Overbay - they are also hot after Kubel.
