Final: @AZL Angels 7, AZL Brewers 6

Over the offseason, following the Marcum and Greinke trades, I almost gave Joel Pierce a Power 50 vote because, well, it was tough to even think of 50 even halfway interesting players. I'm glad I didn't. Pierce has begun his career by ringing up an astounding 16.62 ERA, including the six runs he gave up today while only getting one out. The young Canadian righty's first outing was good, when he allowed two runs (one earned) in four innings with a 5/1 K/BB, but from there on out it's been one catastrophe after another, with today's perhaps the most calamitous.

On the other hand, the good Michael Schaub showed up today, fanning five and walking one in three scoreless, hitless innings. Jose Garcia (4-5, 2 2B) and Jalen Harris (3-5, 3B) led the way for the offense. They almost came back from Pierce's 7th-inning disaster by scoring three runs combined between the 8th and 9th innings, but it wasn't quite enough.

The Angels used seven pitchers. Does Tony La Russa have a son?

They had the tying run on third with one out in the 9th but couldn't plate him:

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 9th
  • Andres Martinez walks.
  • Kevin Berard walks. Andres Martinez to 2nd.
  • Jalen Harris singles on a ground ball to right fielder Ryan Bolden. Andres Martinez scores. Kevin Berard to 2nd.
  • Steve Felix pops out to shortstop Wendell Soto.
  • With Jose R. Garcia batting, wild pitch by Johnny Holtman, Kevin Berard to 3rd. Jalen Harris to 2nd.
  • Jose R. Garcia doubles (3) on a fly ball to left fielder Brennan Gowens. Kevin Berard scores. Jalen Harris to 3rd.
  • Jimmie Pharr strikes out swinging.
  • Renaldo Jenkins strikes out swinging.

Final (game one): @Charlotte 3, Brevard County 2 (7 innings)

Mark Rogers line in his first game back with BC doesn't exactly scream "healthy": 4 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 3 K, 1 WP. Scooter Gennett cracked a solo homer in the 7th (and final) inning to narrow the gap to one but that was as close as the Sea Cows would get. D'Vontrey Richardson tripled, and Josh Prince doubled. Rough day for Kentrail Davis: 0-4 with three strikeouts. Gennett did commit his 18th error.

Rogers, with the help of Gennett, came undone in the 5th:

Charlotte Bottom of the 5th

  • Dustin Biell walks.
  • With Hak-Ju Lee batting, Dustin Biell steals (4) 2nd base.
  • Hak-Ju Lee reaches on fielding error by second baseman Scooter Gennett. Dustin Biell to 3rd.
  • With Ty Morrison batting, Hak-Ju Lee steals (26) 2nd base.
  • Ty Morrison walks.
  • Tyler Bortnick singles on a fly ball to right fielder Kentrail Davis. Dustin Biell scores. Hak-Ju Lee scores. Ty Morrison to 3rd.
  • Pitcher Change: Skyler Crawford replaces Mark Rogers.
  • With Mark Thomas batting, Ty Morrison caught stealing home, catcher Sean McCraw to second baseman Scooter Gennett to catcher Sean McCraw, Tyler Bortnick to 2nd.
  • Mark Thomas grounds out, pitcher Skyler Crawford to shortstop Josh Prince to first baseman Hunter Morris. Tyler Bortnick to 3rd.
  • Michael Sheridan strikes out swinging.

Add another homer for Green (3-3 2hr 1dd) , I guess DM doesnt realize he may just have the answer at 2nd right under his nose as Jeff Kent Jr awaits....What more does Green need to do? Guy is only hitting .330 17 bombs and 28 doubles 43/55 bb/k ratio and a .957 OPS. He can't say they can't find room for him to play at 3rd and 2nd anymore, time to pull the trigger

Final (suspended game): @DSL Brewers 7, DSL Mariners 6 (9 innings)

A pleasant surprise given that we knew the Cerveceritos were down 3-0 after half an inning. Great to see them win their second in four games* against their former tormentors, the Marineritos. Weirdly, Eliezer Montano was able to continue his interrupted start and actually went eight innings, allowing just three runs, with seven strikeouts. When Doni Arias allowed three runs in the top of the 9th to break a 3-3 tie, all seemed lost...until Deivi Mejia stepped to the plate and smacked a two-out pinch-hit walk-off grand slam to send the Marineritos to the bottom of the Caribbean. Man, that's epic. The game was originally the second half of a doubleheader and as such only slated for seven innings, so I guess that makes it an extra-inning two-out pinch-hit walk-off grand slam. Holy hyphens! Orlando Arcia tripled, walked, and was hit by a pitch. Esthervin Matos pinch hit in the 9th and drew a walk, scoring on Mejia's slam.

*Though technically this game happened a week and a half ago

DSL Brewers Bottom of the 9th
  • Juan De Leon walks.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Marcos Padilla replaces Juan De Leon.
  • Natanael Mejia strikes out swinging.
  • Jorge De La Cruz strikes out swinging.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Sthervin Matos replaces Raphachel Colatosti.
  • Sthervin Matos walks. Marcos Padilla to 2nd.
  • Yonki Hernandez hit by pitch. Marcos Padilla to 3rd. Sthervin Matos to 2nd.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Deivi Mejia replaces Alejandro Mendoza.
  • Deivi Mejia hits a grand slam (1) to left field. Marcos Padilla scores. Sthervin Matos scores. Yonki Hernandez scores.

How about Marcos Padilla getting in on the action there? Either he's really fast or Juan de Leon broke something taking ball four.

They aren't going to start Farris anyway so if you are going to have a bat on the bench who can play 2 positions why not go with the better hitter?

I mean Wilson and CC can both play 2nd....how many 2nd basemen do you need?

Green with good situational hitting, takes another walk to start out an inning.

3 for 3, 2 HR's, 1 Double, 2 Walks, 5 RBI's, and in good shape to score his 5th run of the night.

Edit: Gamel with a single to load the bases with nobody out. If Green scores, he ties the club record of 5 runs.

Gindl drives Green in to allow him to match the club record. Still probably has an AB left.

Taylor Green stays perfect at the plate, with his 4th hit of the night, a single, which also drove in his 6th run. He has a chance to set the club record of 6 runs scored with one out now.

Edit: Didn't set the record as Almonte hit into a DP.

Green is 4-4 with 2 HR's, 1 Double, 2 BB's, 6 RBI's, and 5 R's on the night.

Final: @DSL Brewers 3, DSL Mariners 1 (7 innings)

A pinch of sweet-sweep to help you sleep easy, my lord. 18-year-old Jorge Ortega continues to succeed without a lot of strikeouts by limiting the walks, today posting a 3/0 K/BB in six innings while allowing just one run; he has a 37/8 K/BB in 58 innings this year. The only run he allowed today came on a leadoff homer. Orlando Arcia clouted his 5th homer of the year and also walked, bringing his line at the close of business to .322/.423/.533. He doesn't turn 17 for another week. Wow. Almost as young as Arcia, Esthervin Matos has been almost as impressive as well, 2-3 with a double in this game. Francisco Castillo, Jose Pena, and Elvis Rubio each doubled. Yonki Hernandez was plunked twice after also being hit in the first game. Hope they were curveballs, Yonki. Deivi Mejia followed up his earlier heroics by going 0-2 with a sac fly. Still had a pretty good day, eh?

Final: @Birmingham 3, Huntsville 2

The Stars got only two runs out of 13 baserunners (ten hits and three walks). Hainley Statia had three hits, and Lee Haydel, Brock Kjeldgaard (showing signs of life), and Steffan Wilson each had two. Khris Davis, struggling to find his feet at AA, was 0-3 with a sac fly.

Final (game two): @Charlotte 3, Brevard County 2 (7 innings)

A fine start for Evan Anundsen, two runs in six innings (though with just two strikeouts), before you-know-who gave up the winning run. Yes, Rolando Pascual strikes again. The Brewers are really determined to see this one out I guess. D'Vontrey Richardson had two knocks to raise his average to .293, and Shawn Zarraga also had two hits. Before you ask, yes, D'Vo was picked off again. Scooter Gennett struck out all three times up.
Charlotte Bottom of the 7th
Pitcher Change: Rolando Pascual replaces Evan Anundsen.
  • Omar Luna singles on a soft fly ball to right fielder Kentrail Davis.
  • Reid Fronk out on a sacrifice bunt, first baseman Hunter Morris to second baseman Scooter Gennett. Omar Luna to 2nd.
  • Hak-Ju Lee walks.
  • Ty Morrison singles on a fly ball to left fielder Chuck Caufield. Omar Luna scores. Hak-Ju Lee to 2nd.

Evan Anundsen making his case with Sam Narron, Rob Wooten, Taylor Green, and Logan Shafer for comeback player of the year. This is great to see! Any reports on if those workouts of two years ago have yielded increased velocity?

And I nominate Taylor Green for game of the year

Final: @Clinton 8, Wisconsin 4

Late LumberKings rally stops RattlersBy Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CLINTON, IA - The Clinton LumberKings scored four times with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 4-4 tie with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Thursday night at Alliant Energy Field. The LumberKings would go on to the 8-4 win for their second straight win over the Rattlers.

The Rattlers (51-51 overall, 13-19 second half) grabbed the lead in the second inning. Jason Rogers singled and Greg Hopkins doubled to put runners at second and third with no outs. Chad Stang's sacrifice fly to right field got Rogers home and sent Hopkins to third. An RBI grounder by Joey Paciorek scored Hopkins for a 2-0 lead.

Rogers blasted a leadoff homer in the fourth inning to put the Rattlers up 3-0.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the first inning. Then, he retired the next nine batters he faced. Julio Morban started the Clinton fourth with a bunt single. He would be erased when Kevin Rivers grounded into a force play at second. Rivers was still at first with two outs. Then, Mickey Wiswall doubled down the first base line to score Rivers.

Clinton (41-61, 17-15) took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Matt Browning started the inning with a fly ball to center that was lost in the lights for a double. Nelson walked the next batter, but struck out Carlton Tanabe for the first out. Then, Mike McGee singled to load the bases.

Julio Morban sent two runs home with a single to tie the game. An RBI grounder by Rivers knocked in the run to put Clinton up 4-3.

Mike Brownstein singled to start the Rattlers seventh inning. He moved around to third base on a pair of wild pitches. A sacrifice fly by T.J. Mittelstaedt scored Brownstein with the tying run.

Rattlers reliever Greg Holle got the first two outs of the seventh inning and the game appeared headed to the eighth inning still tied. But, the LumberKings had other ideas. McGee singled and Morban walked. Rivers singled to right and McGee was ruled safe at the plate after a strong throw home by Stang to give Clinton a 5-4 lead.

Stefen Romero sent the next pitch into the left field corner for a two-run double and a 7-4 lead. Later in the inning, Kalian Sams knocked in Romero with a single off reliever Brian Garman to make the score 8-4.

Tyler Blandford and Tyler Burgood came out of the Clinton bullpen and combined to get the final six outs of the game.

The final game of the series is Friday evening. The Rattlers have Brooks Hall (5-3, 4.19) as the scheduled starting pitcher. Clinton has Anthony Fernandez (3-3, 3.45) as their probable starter. Game time is 7:00 PM. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40.

Wisconsin Box Score

This was the first time RHP Jimmy Nelson gave up more than three earned runs in a start since June 7th, nine starts ago; RHP Seth Lintz dipping his toe into full-season ball, a second single-inning scoreless appearance; Midwest League batting leader T.J. Mittelstaedt (.318, 2nd in OPS at .919 -- what a season for the previously unheralded 23-year-old) singled twice and added a sacrifice fly; big LF Jason Rogers (we're contractually obligated to preface Jason with big, hulking, and by the way, talented) singled twice in addition to his home run; 1B Nick Ramirez 0-for-4 with two K's, looking for that Helena magic, but it's only been two games; Reggie Keen 1-for-2 on the basepaths, caught stealing 3rd base in the 1st -- he's 33-for-46 in that regard...

Sounds Beat Down RedHawks, 13-2, On Thursday In Oklahoma City

Green ties club record with five runs scored in perfect evening

Nashville Sounds

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Taylor Green homered twice while tying a franchise record five runs scored in a 13-2 victory over the Oklahoma City RedHawks on Thursday evening at RedHawks Field.

Finishing the evening with a career night, Green went a perfect 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double, and two walks while driving in six runs. Green became the third player in the franchise's 34-year history and second player this season to score five runs in a game, joining Adrian Brown (May 12, 1999 at Tucson) and teammate Erick Almonte (July 5, 2011 vs. Memphis).

The five runs scored were a career high for Green, who also matched career bests in homers (2) for the fourth time and RBIs (6) for the third occurrence in his career.

Nashville (52-54) plated at least one run in the first eight innings of the game. Including the pitcher and, every player in the Sounds lineup recorded at least one of the 19 hits on the evening. Led by Green's four hits, six Sounds had multiple hit games. Jordan Brown added three singles and three runs scored while Logan Schafer extended his hitting streak to seven games, the longest active streak on the squad.

Sounds starter Frankie De La Cruz allowed one unearned run on six hits in six innings of work for the win. With six quality starts, the reigning PCL Pitcher of the Week is now posting a 5-1 record with a 2.64 ERA (18 ER / 61.1 IP) in his last 11 starts, dating back to June 6th.

Nashville plated three runs in the opening frame and sent eight batters to the dish. Brown got things started with a single and scored the opening run on a Green's team-leading 28th double of the season. After Almonte walked, Edwin Maysonet singled home Green followed by Almonte scoring on an Oklahoma City throwing error.

The Sounds went up 5-0 in the next inning. After Brown reached on a two-out single, Green lined his first homer of the contest to right field. Singles from Maysonet, Gindl, and Schafer gave the Sounds another run in the third.

Oklahoma plated their first run in the bottom of the third on a Nashville throwing error. A one-out walk and two-out single preceded Anderson Hernandez grounding into Maysonet, but the shortstop committed a throwing gaff that allowed a run to score.

Mat Gamel's two run double in the fourth was responsible for the next two runs. Green walked and Almonte singled to open the frame before Gamel blasted a line drive to right field to clear the bases.

Green's second homer of the game gave the Sounds a 10-1 lead. On a 0-2 pitch from RedHawks starter and former Sound Nelson Figueroa, Green punished a towering fly ball to the second deck in right field. It was the 12th time this season that a Sounds player has gone yard twice this season and the third time for Green.

Catcher Martin Maldonado became the final Sounds starter to record a hit with a sixth inning double to right center. He later scored as Schafer lofted an RBI single over the shortstop's head.

Green tied a Sounds record with his fifth run scored in the seventh as Nashville moved to a 12-1 advantage.

Reliever Donovan Hand began the seventh for Nashville and struck out the first batter before the RedHawks scored their second run on four consecutive singles.

Nashville plated its final run in the eighth as Brandon Boggs doubled to the gap in left center. Boggs would later score on Green singled for his 6th RBI of the game.

Figueroa (6-6) was roughed up for 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits in five innings pitched for the loss.

Hand gave up one run in two innings. Jim Henderson ended the game with with a scoreless ninth.

The Sounds and RedHawks will play the finale of a four-game set at 7:05 PM CT on Friday night at RedHawks Field. Left-hander Chase Wright (5-6, 6.01) takes the hill for Nashville against Oklahoma City southpaw Andy Van Hekken (5-4, 2.98).

Nashville Box Score

Still say the the Brewers will have no choice but to add Frankie De La Cruz to the 40-man roster this offseason to keep him in the organization -- good for him (and the Crew)...

Nashville Play-by-Play

Can't help but notice the corrolation between Taylor Green and 80's/90's pop diva Taylor Dayne, whose songs included "Prove Your Love", "Don't Rush Me", "I'll Wait", "I'm Not Featuring You", and "Beautiful".

But in reality, Green owes his amazing season to Emmylou Harris.

Hoover, AL – Greg Paiml collected 3 hits, 1 RBI and 1 run as the Birmingham Barons (15-18, 55-48) outshined the Huntsville Stars (14-19, 51-52), 3-2, in front of 5,648 fans Thursday night at Regions Park.

The Stars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Hainley Statia singled to left field, continued to third on a double to center field by Zelous Wheeler and dashed home on groundout by Brock Kjeldgaard.

Birmingham answered in the bottom of the fourth after Seth Loman was hit by a pitch and stole second base before Justin Greene’s RBI single to right field plated Loman and knotted the game at a 1-1 tie.

In the bottom of the fifth, Paiml smacked a single to shortstop and advanced to second on Alden Carrithers’ single to center field. Paiml stole third base and rushed home on a RBI single to shortstop by Jon Gilmore, 2-1.

The Barons added one run in the bottom of the sixth when Jason Bour doubled to left field and scored on Paiml’s RBI single to right field, 3-1.

Huntsville tacked on a run in the top of the eighth after Wheeler received a walk and stole second base. A fly out to center field by Steffan Wilson pushed Wheeler to third before a sacrifice fly to right field by Khris Davis delivered Wheeler for the final run of the game, 3-2.

Charlie Leesman (8-4) earned the victory for the Barons after he hurled 7.0 IP with one earned run on 9 hits, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Anthony Carter (S, 1) received his first save of the season with 1.0 hitless IP and one strikeout.

Michael Bowman (2-9) received the loss for the Stars after he surrendered two earned runs on 6 hits, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts in 4.2 IP.

The Barons and Stars continue the series with game four of the five-game series at Regions Park with first pitch set for Friday night at 7:05 PM. Birmingham sends right-hander Terry Doyle (3-4, 3.54) to the mound and Huntsville features left-handed pitcher Dan Merklinger (6-6, 4.31).

I mean Wilson and CC can both play 2nd....how many 2nd basemen do you need?

Just one. We are still looking for him.

Taylor Green now 10th in the PCL in OBP. One behind Lawrie, two behind Cole Gillespie. 9th in OPS (Lawrie leads). He is ahead of Mat Gamel in both stats.

Any doubts that Lawrie would be manning 2B or 3B right now if we still had him?
