Summerfest

statman0007

I'd go to that to see the Gear Daddies for sure. Last year they opened a show for Soul Asylum in Green Bay but one of my kids was hospitalized the day before so I missed it. Saw Martin Zellar here(Madison) a few times and the GDs' once at O'Kays.

Why was that woman eating recalled dog food?

Jon Bon Jovi is a huge Tom Waits fan and has a few acoustic covers out there that are cool. After I found that out I quit hating him so much.

Jon BJ is a fun guy, and while I don't agree with much of his politics, at least he's consistent and not a basher. Both he and Richie Sambora have said many times how they know the critics have liked some of their stuff and disliked most of it, but as long as the stadium or arena is full, they laugh all the way to the bank.

...people with disposable income are not downloading legal and illegal versions of the hot new indy artist most likely to overdose. They'd rather go see the "comfort food" of music, those that were big back when they were young.

I must admit, that Star Trib article is a sign of why the newspaper industry is falling quickly...

Wow, Al is in full-on generalization mode here...add these to 'Aaron Gleeman says music snobs don't like popular music' and you have truly searing insight on the entertainment industry, news media, and life in general.

If you think that Star-Trib article is highly snobbish, you haven't been reading much about music...that was pretty mild. But I'm sure that article and its tone far eclipses internet news sources as a threat to printed newspapers.

I have a colleague who teaches in one of the UW system campuses, and she cited one of her typical-college-aged students as a huge Ronnie James Dio fan. Which stunned me, because he was popular among my high school pals 20 plus years ago...I was almost as surprised when my college students were talking about a U2 concert...I remember seeing them when I was in college.

Kids these days. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Also, the Gear Daddies rule. That's one act from my youth that I'd go see at a moment's notice...

Went to school at the U of M. Most of my dorm buddies LOVED the Gear Daddies, so I was exposed to their music quite often. I can't stand them, the singer's voice grates on me like nothing else. Go figure, the only song of theirs that I like, Blues Mary, is sung by someone else in the band.

I've seen Bon Jovi interviewed a few times, seems like a good and genuine guy, good to see he managed to live a stable life even though the many opportunities to self destruct were available in excess.I have absolutely nothing against the guy and i'm glad for him they are still able to draw large crowds,i just have always thought their music was a total bore to hear.Nothing more to it than that. They've obviously done fine without my support,Sambora is silly rich and got marry Heather Locklear, that's gotta be swell living.

No, then they just have bad taste

Since i at one timed shared at least some of your tastes in 80's metal,i'd assume we are near the same age.I never got into stuff like Bon Jovi/Dokken/Poison/Cinderella/Whitesnake,the stuff i kinda found to be soft femish hairspray rock.I was obssessed though with Motley Crue when Shout at the Devil came out when i was 13-14 and i was a huge Ozzy fan.Nicky Sixx was my idol during that roughly two year stretch after having 2nd row seats to a Crue/Ozzy concert.

I can't listen to that stuff anymore,by about age 16 i was pretty much done with that sort of music outside of occasionally enjoying hearing one on the radio. When i poke fun at that music,i don't mean anything personal at you or any still followers of it since i once was one.

That's cool danzig. That's why I gave the http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif after my "bad taste" comment, just to poke at people.

"His whole life is a fantasy camp. People should plunk down $2000 to live like him for a week. Sleep, do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors and have sex without dating... THAT'S a fantasy camp."

Toby Keith is nowhere near sold out. Plenty of Bleacher and Lawn seats remain.

Which makes it virtually sold out. If it is a wristbanded show, which it probably will be, SF has already made their money on the red & yellow seats and they make the general public happy by allowing for "free" seats elsewhere while those patrons make the event more money by drinking beer and eating Martino's hot dogs.

The Marcus Amp selling out is a lot different than Miller Park selling out brewcrewreview http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif . And while I'm at it, Pollstar is evil.

I'm not sure if people are aware of this or not, but the last day of Summerfest, Sunday July 8th, the gates will be open free to the public from noon to 4pm. No promotions, no strings attached. There's also talk of a relatively "easy" free promotion on July 4th.

It's not. Two lawn seats are gonna run you about 100 bucks, including all the fees. None of the Amphitheater shows that are currently on sale will have free lawn or bleacher admission.

All kidding aside, Dennis DeYoung isn't even with them is he?

Dennis DeYoung is not with Styx

The drummer is dead

The bassist has AIDS

It's basically Tommy Shaw, and that dude with the moustache and long yellow hair.

I never got into 80s metal -- I always preferred the 70s rock -- but I sure lived through it though.

I always disliked Bon Jovi especially. Primarily because of the song "Runaway" -- I never got it. Some school girl doesn't get attention from her parents, so she discovers the option of being a prostitute, and that makes her happy? -- Awesome. Plus everytime I hear that awful keyboard introduction, it is like the ushering in of 2 decades of music that makes me want to mellonscoop out the eyeballs of my soul.

That said, I am sure it will be a fun show for people in their late 30s. I'd certainly go to it, and I am sure feel like I got my money's worth.

A lot of the metal from the 80s didn't age well for me. Where I think bands like the Police, Pretenders, Elvis Costello, etc... the music is pretty listenable today.

How do you know this? Summerfest doesn't even know at this point in time which shows will offer free lawn and bleacher seats. That isn't determined when the tickets go on sale. If it were, how do you expect the on-sales would go if people knew free seats would be available later?

Like last year, I'm guessing only 3-4 of the shows will NOT have wristbands available. Some of the shows they just open up the gates and let the masses come in as they please (for the BoDeans of the world).

Because they're selling general admission lawn seats and

bleacher seats for all four shows that currently on sale.

Even the Fray who I'd never even heard of.

Toby Keith for instance-

Acutally two lawn seats for TK will run you 80 bucks. Two bleacher seats will cost you $102.14.

I understand your point, but they have had wristbands available for shows in which they sold lawn and bleachers seats at. Why wouldn't they make those seats available for sale at this point in time? Like I said before, if Summerfest were to announce "hey, you can get in free with a wristband for this show," why would anyone feel compelled to buy tickets for some of these shows?

And please trust me. I'm not guessing here.

I'm totally missing something here. Summerfest has had free wristbands available day of show for general admission lawn seating for shows in which they've sold general admission lawn tickets in advance?

As far as people holding off on buying tickets, the lawn is a mile away from the stage. And uncovered. Plus for a show in which the free wristbands are available you have to get there when the Marcus gates open to get a good spot. That's why people buy seats in the red and the yellow sections even when there are GA tickets available for free. Sit in the first 10 or 15 rows for a show and you'll never want to sit up top again.

Is it that hard to believe? When shows go on sale, and people are really bent to see a certain band, but don't have the cash necessary to sit in the red of yellow sections, they often will buy tickets for the bleachers or grass. That's the risk they take if that show later offers free wristbands, and that is a frequent complaint that comes in. However, if someone bought a lawn ticket for someone like The Fray, and finds out later that it is a wristbanded show, they really have no one to blame but themselves for not properly gauging how big the show would be.

I remember my dental hygenist told me a few years ago that her and her boyfirend bought something like eight tickets to the Sugar Ray show at Potawatomi a year or two ago figuring that it would be a huge show and even if they couldn't find six of their friends to go along they could sell their tickets on ebay. I remember asking her about this the next time I had an app't. and they lost a lot of money not realizing that you can't charge $50+ for a Sugar Ray ticket and expect a big crowd. "Who doesn't like Sugar Ray???"

She was really nice, and she was working on my teeth with my mouth propped open, but it was hard not to laugh.

Colby - Any chance Ryan Adams will be making an appearance at Summerfest...ever?

Sorry RyDogg, I don't have anything to do with who plays at Summerfest.

Tickets for Toby Keith will go on sale 10 a.m. Jan. 27 and are $65.77, $55.77, $40.77 and $30, excluding service charges. Tickets may be purchased at the Marcus Amphitheater box office or through Ticketmaster, (414) 276-4545 or www.ticketmaster.com. Due to construction at the Marcus box office, patrons will have to fill out an order form and receive tickets via mail. There are no free lawn seats.

LINK

That means that red seats are $65.77, yellow seats are $55.77, bleacher seats are 40.77, & lawn seats are $30. "There are no free lawn seats" means just that. It doesn't mean that there might be free lawn seats the day of the show if ticket sales are slower than expected. It means that the any seat/piece of grass (yellow, red, bleacher, lawn) in the amphitheater requires a ticket that you need to pay for.

There are four Amphitheater Summerfest shows currently on sale- TK, John Mayer, the Fray, & Roger Waters. All of them will require you to buy a ticket no matter where you sit. There will be no free wristbands.

Now if a lower tier band that is booked later like say the Allman Brothers is playing, it's most likely that only seats in the yellow or red sections will be sold. In that case bleachers & lawn would be free first come first serve by wristband day of show. But this would be annonced ahead of time and you'd know that before, during, & afteryou were buying reserved seats from ticketmaster or the box office.

If you're correct Colby I'm surprised because it seems downright dishonest putting the burden on the consumer to gauge interest in a particular show so as not to get ripped off. I guess one would be buying not to have to get there early but that ought to be made clear in the selling.

Someone buying extra tickets hoping to sell them later and miscalculating is a totally different thing.

I'm not sure I'd even want to see him in that atmosphere. I'd rather see him at a place where people pretty much just bought tickets to see Ryan Adams play, and in a theater. He'll get booked again at the Riverside, it will just be a matter of time before it comes out. I'm going to guess it will be late May, since he has some US dates in early May and he's playing Stonehenge on June 5, or it will be in late June or July.

Actually, that's not what I meant by when I said "I tried." I meant that I tried to explain a few scenarios in which that has happened, despite a couple of people insisting that it hasn't.

Instead of expanding, I'm going to pull myself out of the conversation as I'm a little too close to the subject matter and I'm probably not doing my place of employment, or the patrons, much of a service by speaking about it on this forum.

I bought what i thought were around 70 dollar tickets for Roger Waters and when they showed up at my house, they were over 100 a piece and a section closer.I didn't wanna hassle exchanging them a and the people i'm going with were ok with it,but it's my first time paying 100 bucks or more to see a band.

No wonder these bands tour forever they are making a fortune.

Ok, I do believe that you're way closer to the situation than I am and know things that the general ticket buying public doesn't. But just provide an example though so I can understand what you're talking about.Without naming specific shows or whatever. I'm still not sure what you're saying. Are you talking about when they "paper" a show or whatever that's called when they give out tons of free tickets in order to sell concessions. I can see this happening but for Joe average ticket buyer who wants to see a show, he's probably not aware of how to score free tickets and when he goes through the regular channels, he'll see that he has to pay for lawn tickets.

You said Summerfest doesn't even know at this point in time which shows will offer free lawn and bleacher seats. So they actually may offer free lawn & bleacher seats for a show in which they sold them at the initial onsale date?

ETA: I read your posts again & I guess I figured it out. Without coming right out and saying it I think what you were implying when you said Summerfest doesn't even know at this point in time which shows will offer free lawn and bleacher seats. is that Summerfest doesn't know which shows they will and will not have anybody at the gates checking for wristbands. Or will have somebody there but looking the other way.
