Tyler Cravy is starting for Helena tonight. I'm not listening, so I don't know if Gagnon is going to piggyback tonight with Cravy, but that might be a safe assumption.
Gagnon will pitch either today or tomorrow out of the pen.

Final: Brevard County 8, @Charlotte 6

A torrent of hits, 15 of them, carried the Manatees to victory. Scooter Gennett and Hunter Morris had three each, while Kentrail Davis, D'Vontrey Richardson, Shea Vucinich, and Josh Prince each rang up two. Gennett and Davis each tripled. Scott Krieger homered. D'Vo posted multiple hits for the 7th time in his last 10 games; because he can't do anything good without also doing something bad, he was also caught stealing for the 11th time and committed a throwing error. Prince was hit with two errors, one fielding, one throwing. Hiram Burgos allowed all six Charlotte runs in 4.2 frames; Jon Pokorny did a nice job quieting things down, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Charlotte put the tying runs in scoring position in the 9th off Bradley Blanks:

Charlotte Bottom of the 9th
  • Pitcher Change: Bradley Blanks replaces Jonathan Pokorny.
  • Tyler Bortnick reaches on throwing error by shortstop Josh Prince.
  • Mark Thomas singles on a ground ball to shortstop Josh Prince. Tyler Bortnick to 2nd.
  • Michael Sheridan strikes out on foul bunt.
  • Jake Jefferies grounds out, first baseman Hunter Morris to pitcher Bradley Blanks. Tyler Bortnick to 3rd. Mark Thomas to 2nd.
  • Matthew Hall flies out to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson.

Final: Huntsville 5, @Birmingham 2

Wily Peralta tossed seven scoreless innings, striking out four, walking three, hitting a batter, and allowing four hits. Not exactly dominant, but we'll take it. 59 of his 97 pitches were strikes, so he could certainly do better in that department. Erik Komatsu and Brock Kjeldgaard each had two hits, accounting for two thirds of the Stars' overall total. One of Komatsu's was a double, and he also walked. Lee Haydel, 0-5, remains mired in his terrible July slump, and Khris Davis was 0-4 with a walk and three strikeouts. Santo Manzanillo again walked a tightrope in the 8th, walking two batters and striking out none but getting out of the inning unscathed. Rob Wooten had a tough 9th, almost pitching the Barons back into the game by allowed two runs on three hits. Peralta picked off another runner; I don't actually know anything about his move, or even his pickoff totals, but he certainly seems to have a good one for a righty.

The Barons left their starter, Nevin Griffith, in to throw 103 pitches in just 3.1 innings; he walked eight. I don't know anything about Griffith, but it says here that he was a second-round pick in 2007 and is just 22--not sure that's the kind of guy you want to leave in to take his lumps in that fashion.

Final: Casper 13, @Helena 7

Ghosts Beat Brewers in Slugfest

Helena Brewers

The Brewers fought to tie the Casper Ghosts at seven runs apiece in the bottom of the sixth, but ran out of steam, falling 13-7. Casper scored five in the top of the eighth to seal the victory, their first in eight games. David Goforth (0-3) allowed eight earned runs on eight hits in two innings of relief. Tyler Cravy started for the Brewers, going five innings and allowing four earned runs. Cravy, Goforth and Sean Albury combined to strike out 14 Ghosts.

The Brewers scored in three consecutive innings, but would never lead in the ballgame. Parker Berberet homered for the second consecutive night, his fifth of the season. The Oregon State product finished the night 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Max Walla doubled and tripled, walked twice, scored a run and drove one in.

The teams will play the rubber match of the three-game series Wednesday at Kindrick Legion Field.

Helena Box Score

Walla's 2-3 night with two walks boosted his slash line to .295/.377/.426/.803 on the season; he also stole a base. Yadiel Rivera was 2-5 with a pair of singles. Berberet finished 2-5 with three RBI. 9-hitter Adrian Williams was 2-4 with two singles. Tyler Roberts, Mike Nemeth, & John Dishon each had one single; Dishon added a walk and a stolen base. Kyle Dhanani & Robbie Garvey both went hitless on the contest.

While Cravy & Goforth had rough outings, Sean Albury's ('11 31st-rd.) line was filthy... however, he was about as wild as he was filthy. The righty allowed a single, hit a batter, & was charged with a wild pitch before recording an out after entering the game (with the bases loaded) in the 8th inning. The single, HBP, & WP each allowed a run to score (all charged to Goforth). After he got that out of his system, though, Albury got the 4, 5, & 6-hitters to strike out swinging in order to end the inning (& strand the bases loaded). Albury hit another batter & threw another wild pitch in the 9th, but recorded a popout & two strikeouts to end the frame scoreless.

Final: @Cerveceritos 2, Atléticos 1

DSL Brewers Box Score

Joel Dicent was the story in this one. He finished with a line of 7.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 9 K. His season ERA is now 2.88, with 43 K, 19 BB, & a .218 OAVG in 50 IP. The righty, listed at 6'3" & 176 lbs., recorded nine outs on the ground versus four in the air. Dicent turns 20 on August 4th. He worked 7.1 innings back on June 20th against the DSL Mariners, allowing two runs/zero earned, walking two & striking out seven. Aside from that start, tonight's was hands-down Dicent's best game of 2011. This is certainly a prospect to watch.

Raul Mondesi, Jr. went 2-3 with two singles & a run scored. Juan De Leon was 1-3 with a double & a run scored. Francisco Castillo had a single & one RBI, the only RBI on the game. Orlando Arcia (17-yo), Sthervin Matos (17-yo), & catcher Natanael Mejia (19-yo) each added one single. Mejia was also 2-2 in throwing out attempted basestealers.

DSL Brewers Play-by-Play

In the 8th, along with the catcher Mejia, reliever Doni Arias came on & picked up Dicent to nail down the save. Joel had allowed a runner to reach with a throwing error after striking out the leadoff batter in the inning:

DSL Athletics Top of the 8th
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Jesus Rivas replaces Shawn Duinkerk.
  • Jesus Rivas called out on strikes.
  • Rodolfo Penalo reaches on throwing error by pitcher Joel Dicent.

  • Pitcher Change: Doni Arias replaces Joel Dicent.
  • Renato
Nunez singles on a ground ball to center fielder Francisco Castillo.

Final (10 Innings): Nashville 11, @Oklahoma City 9

Sounds Win Exciting Road Opener At Oklahoma City In Extras, 11-9

Almonte's game-winning double gives Nashville seventh straight road win

Nashville Sounds

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - First baseman Erick Almonte crushed a two-run double in the top of the 10th inning to power the Nashville Sounds to a come-from-behind 11-9 victory over the Oklahoma City RedHawks in the opener of a four-game set on Tuesday night.

Scoring six runs in the final three innings, Nashville (51-53) moved to 3-9 in extra-inning play while picking up its 11th last-at win of the season (second on the road). It was also the Sounds' eighth come-from-behind win while trailing in the seventh inning or later.

Nashville banged out 18 hits on seven different RedHawk pitchers. Every position player recorded a hit while seven different Sounds had multi-hit performances.

Coming into the contest tied for 2nd in the PCL with 32 hits in July, outfielder Caleb Gindl went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Second baseman Taylor Green went 2-for-5 with a double for his sixth multiple-hit effort in his last eight games.

Shortstop Eric Farris jacked a three-run homer while driving in a season-high four runs. Center fielder Logan Schafer singled in the 10th to extend his hitting streak to five games.

Farris' three run home[r] in the top of the second inning gave the Sounds an early 3-0 advantage. After Mat Gamel singled and Mike Rivera walked, Farris belted his sixth homer over the left field wall.

Oklahoma bounced back to bat around and score six runs in the bottom of the second to chase Sounds starter Sam Narron from the game. The first two runs came from a Koby Clemens two-run homer to center, his 14th of the season. Narron would later issue four consecutive two-out walks, followed by a two-run single from Robinson Cancel and RBI base knock from Brian Bogusevic. Reliever Daniel Meadows would then enter the contest and fan Drew Locke to end the rally.

Nashville chipped away and scored two runs in the fourth for a 6-5 deficit. Gamel doubled home Almonte for the club's first run and later scored the other run on a Farris RBI single, which removed RedHawks starter Brad Hennessey from the game.

Oklahoma City would score three more runs to extend the lead to 9-5 in the fifth. Meadows began the frame by recording one out and walking two batters before begin replaced by Daniel Herrera. Wladimir Sutil singled to left to load the bases, which was then followed by two walks from Herrera that scored two runs. The scoring concluded as Anderson Hernandez hit an RBI groundout to shortstop.

Rivera jacked his sixth homer to center to lead off the top of the eighth. Nashville plated another run to come within two at 9-7 on two defensive miscues by Oklahoma City. As Farris hit a grounder to third, Oswaldo Navarro overthrew the second baseman to start the double play, which moved Gindl to third. Farris then stole second base during the ensuing at-bat, but no Oklahoma City player covered the bag as Cancel's throw hit Farris' leg. Gindl would come home easily and was credited with a stolen base in the double steal.

Nashville knotted the contest at 9-9 with two runs in the top of the ninth, beginning with a leadoff double to the right field corner by Green. After Oklahoma's sixth different pitcher, Jeff Fulchino, entered to close the game with a two-run lead, the Sounds quickly loaded the bases with no outs on an Almonte walk and Gamel infield single. Fulchino would then issue a bases-loaded walk to Rivera and an RBI groundout to Gindl for his first blown save of the season.

Almonte's two-run two-bagger gave the Sounds their first lead of the game in the 10th. Ross Wolf (2-3) struck out the first batter of the frame, and then gave up a single to Schafer, double to [Jordan] Brown, and double to Almonte.

Six Sounds pitchers issued a season-high 12 walks, including three with the bases loaded.

Narron had his worst start of the season. The left-hander allowed six runs on four hits and four walks in a season-low 1 2/3 innings pitched. Meadows surrendered two runs on two hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings, stranding two inherited runners.

Herrera gave up a run on two hits and a walk in 2 2/3 frames while allowing both of his inherited runners to score. Zack Segovia worked a scoreless inning. Jim Henderson (3-1) finished the game with two scoreless innings for the win.

The run allowed tonight for Herrera snapped a streak of 11 2/3 consecutive scoreless frames over his last eight outings, the longest scoreless stretch by a Sounds reliever in 2011.

Hennessey gave up five runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings for a no-decision.

The Sounds and RedHawks continue their series at 7:05 pm CT on Wednesday evening at RedHawks Field. Right-hander Amaury Rivas (7-9, 4.66) takes the mound for Nashville against Oklahoma City right-hander Lucas Harrell (1-0, 1.50).

Nashville Box Score

I have to say 'job well done' to whoever put together the game recap for the Sounds' website -- exceptional work, & thank you! The only thing I'd highlight is that the Sounds scored six unanswered runs from the 8th inning on to rally back from being down 9-5.

Casper Ghosts pound Helena Brewers 13-7

By Amber Kuehn, Helena Independent Record

When Casper catcher Will Swanner went deep over the centerfield fence to break a 7-all tie in the seventh inning Tuesday, the Ghosts were far from done.

After allowing the Helena Brewers to crawl back into the game on three separate occasions, the visitors finally put the game away with a five-run eighth frame. When Casper shortstop Trevor Story turned a Jeter-esque play from deep in the hole for the final out in the game, the Ghosts had themselves a 13-7 victory. With the win, the Pioneer League South bottom dwellers snapped a seven-game skid and picked up that elusive 10th win of the season.

It was a rough night for Brewers pitchers, who entered the game with the best ERA in the league (4.44). Helena (16-19) allowed a season-high 18 hits and matched their season-high for runs allowed. After Casper (10-25) scored the go-ahead run on Swanner’s bomb, the Ghosts tacked on three more an inning later on three straight RBI singles. The fourth run of the frame came home when Sean Albury hit Rossell Herrera with a pitch with the bases loaded, and the fifth run scored on a wild pitch before the Brewers managed to record a single out. Seven runners reached base before Albury struck out the side to end an inning in which 10 Ghosts were sent to the plate.

Casper pitcher Brook Hart earned his first win of the season following a blown save attempt. The southpaw got the victory, despite facing just two batters and needing just a single out. David Goforth (0-3) took the loss for Helena, allowing eight earned runs on eight hits to see his ERA balloon from 1.32 to 5.74.

Tyler Cravy started solid on the mound for Helena, giving up just two hits before fanning five straight. But then things snowballed for the right-handed hurler. Matt Argyropoulos homered for the fourth time this season — and third against the Brewers — to put Casper up 1-0 in the third. Then an error by shortstop Yadiel Rivera allowed Jose Rivera to reach base. The error would prove costly, as Rivera later came home on Story’s RBI single and a hard-hit ball by Herrera gave the Ghosts a 3-0 advantage.

The Brewers worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the inning, with Max Walla turning a 9-2 double play to gun down Story at home. Helena then trimmed the deficit to one run in the fourth with RBIs from Kyle Dhanani and Adrian Williams, but failed to complete the rally, leaving two men on. The teams then traded two-run innings, until Walla’s RBI triple plated Parker Berberet for the tying run in the sixth.

The Brewers wouldn’t come closer the rest of the way, hitting just 3 for 14 with runners in scoring position and stranding eight.

Berberet had his second two-run bomb in as many days, and John Dishon also went deep for the Brewers. Casper homered three times in the contest, getting long balls from Argyropoulos and Story before Swanner (tied for the league lead with eight) struck his first homer since the Fourth of July.

David Kandilas led Casper at the plate, going 4 for 6 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Berberet had three RBIs to lead the Brewers in a 2-for-5 performance.

NOTES: With their 4-3 victory over Idaho Falls, the Missoula Osprey (23-12) clinched the first-half Pioneer League North Divsion title Tuesday ... Brewers shortstop Yadiel Rivera and Casper infielder Jose Rivera are not related, but both played on the same team in Puerto Rico ... Helena right-hander Eric Arnett gets the nod tonight for the final game of the series. Arnett is 2-2 with a 5.18 ERA this season and his 40 innings pitched is a league best.
