FYI -- Helena has been eliminated from the first-half standings. You have to try really hard not to make the Pioneer League playoffs, so better luck to the H-Crew when the second half begins this weekend.

FYI # 2: Today marks the last game the AZL Brewers play in the Arizona evening. Starting Wednesday, it's 10:00 AM CT starts for the Arizona League, hopefully the early-morning starts will help "beat the heat".

Final: DSL Brewers 14, @DSL Mariners 9

The Cerveceritos have owed the Marineritos this one for awhile. They never trailed after taking a 4-2 lead in the 4th, but they were hounded relentlessly, needing five runs in the last two innings to put the game away. Nice to see Milton Gomez again, even if it was just for 1.1 innings and he allowed two runs while failing to strike out a batter. Carlos Sosa was the only Cervecerito to pitch well, finishing the game with 1.2 scoreless frames. The massive (6'6", 234#) 19-year-old righty now has a 24/4 K/BB in 15.1 IP this year. I hope he throws as hard as his frame and strikeout rate suggest. Raul Mondesi was the hitting star, busting out for four hits, including his third homer. Juan de Leon also homered, and Francisco Castillo followed up his four-hit game on the 22nd with three more hits and two walks today. That'll bring those slash lines up a little. Esthervin Matos had a hit, a stolen base, and a Rubio--that is, he was hit by a pitch twice. Speaking of Elvis Rubio, he was 1-3 after taking over for Yonki Hernandez, and also picked up two outfield assists. Orlando Arcia was quietly productive with a single, sacrifice fly, walk, and a HBP.

We'll keep an eye on Hernandez:

DSL Brewers Top of the 4th

  • Dionis Hinojosa grounds out, shortstop Ketel Marte to first baseman Axel Wel.
  • Juan De Leon homers (1) on a fly ball to center field.
  • Raul Mondesi reaches on throwing error by pitcher Gregorio Aquino. Raul Mondesi to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Noel De La Cruz replaces Gregorio Aquino.
  • Carlos Pena grounds out, pitcher Noel De La Cruz to first baseman Axel Wel.
  • Yonki Hernandez singles on a fly ball to center fielder Janelfry Zorrilla. Raul Mondesi scores.
  • Francisco Castillo singles on a fly ball to center fielder Janelfry Zorrilla. Yonki Hernandez to 2nd.
  • Orlando Arcia flies out to center fielder Janelfry Zorrilla.

DSL Mariners Bottom of the 4th

  • Defensive Substitution: Elvis Rubio replaces center fielder Yonki Hernandez, batting 1st, playing left field.

Final: Brevard County 8, @Charlotte 7

BC overcame a poor start by Tyler Thornburg (4.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 4 K, 1 HR) to win. Josh Prince went off with the bat, driving in five runs on his third homer of the year plus a double and a walk. D'Vontrey Richardson stayed hot with three hits; can you believe he's hitting .287? Prince swiped his 17th bag and D'Vo his ninth, which would have brought his success rate up to an even 50%...had he not also been caught stealing (well, first he was picked off, but it still goes as a CS). Oh, D'Vo.

Thornburg allowed two runs in three different innings:

Charlotte Bottom of the 1st
  • Hak-Ju Lee singles on a line drive to right fielder Kentrail Davis.
  • Ty Morrison out on a sacrifice bunt, third baseman Shea Vucinich to first baseman Hunter Morris. Hak-Ju Lee to 2nd.
  • Brett Nommensen flies out to left fielder Chuck Caufield.
  • Mark Thomas homers (10) on a fly ball to left field. Hak-Ju Lee scores.
  • Tyler Bortnick pops out to second baseman Scooter Gennett.

Charlotte Bottom of the 4th
  • Mark Thomas walks.
  • With Tyler Bortnick batting, wild pitch by Tyler Thornburg, Mark Thomas to 2nd.
  • Tyler Bortnick walks.
  • With Michael Sheridan batting, wild pitch by Tyler Thornburg, Mark Thomas to 3rd. Tyler Bortnick to 2nd.
  • Michael Sheridan singles on a line drive to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson. Mark Thomas scores. Tyler Bortnick scores.
  • Anthony Scelfo flies out to right fielder Kentrail Davis.
  • Matthew Hall flies out to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson.
  • Omar Luna doubles (5) on a line drive to right fielder Kentrail Davis. Michael Sheridan to 3rd.
  • Hak-Ju Lee flies out to left fielder Chuck Caufield.

Charlotte Bottom of the 5th
  • Ty Morrison flies out to left fielder Chuck Caufield.
  • Brett Nommensen walks.
  • Mark Thomas strikes out swinging. Brett Nommensen steals (20) 2nd base.
  • Tyler Bortnick hit by pitch.
  • Michael Sheridan doubles (24) on a line drive to right fielder Kentrail Davis. Brett Nommensen scores. Tyler Bortnick scores.
  • Pitcher Change: Efrain Nieves replaces Tyler Thornburg.
  • Anthony Scelfo grounds out to first baseman Hunter Morris.

D'vo is flashing serious skills lately at the plate...his numbers are excellent for that league, and if you discount his May, he's looking like he could be an .800+ ops guy in Huntsville next year...I'm incredibly excited to see a toolsy chance guy proving it...here's hoping he's the next Carlos Gonzalez or something equally insane

I'm assuming you mean discount his April, since his May was his best month.

Anywho, it's the D'Vo platoon splits that are interesting (for 2 reasons):
vs. LHP - .206/.239/.338
vs. RHP - .310/.365/.421

1. Because D'Vo is a righty, so they are reverse splits and b

2. A .310 average and a .365 OBP against righties with plus (plus?) defense in CF is frickin useful. Adjust for the terrible offensive environment, and we could really have something.

You could make the case he's our best position prospect at this point.

Final: Wisconsin 6, @Great Lakes 3

Rattlers beat Loons, take two of three in Great Lakes
Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Ratters
MIDLAND, MI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers closed out regular season play against the Midwest League’s Eastern Division with a solid 6-3 win over the Great Lakes Loons Monday night at Dow Diamond. Reggie Keen collected three hits and a key outfield assist as Matt Miller allowed one run over six innings to lead the Rattlers to the win.
Miller recorded the first two outs of the first inning. But, back-to-back walks on close pitches for ball four put two runners on base. Chris Jacobs singled to right to drive in the run to give Great Lakes (57-42 overall, 18-12 second half) a 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin (51-49, 13-17) answered in the top of the third inning. Keen singled in Joey Paciorek to tie the game 1-1.

The Rattlers took the lead in the top of the fifth. Mike Brownstein singled to start the inning. Keen bunted up the first base line and Loons pitcher Greg Wilborn threw wildly to first. The play was ruled a sacrifice bunt and an error on the throw as Brownstein took third base. Keen would steal second to get into scoring position. Nick Shaw sent both runners home with a single to left for a 3-1 lead.

In the sixth, Paciorek doubled off the wall in left field to send Chad Stang home from first. Paciorek took third on the play at the plate. Brownstein’s sacrifice fly send Paciorek home for a 5-1 lead.

Mike Walker picked up his 71st RBI of the season with a two-out double in the top of the seventh and the Rattlers were up 6-1.

Miller tossed six innings, allowed one run, and scattered six hits and four walks.

The Loons got a run in the bottom of the seventh off Brian Garman. Jacobs singled to center with runners on the corners and one out. The runner from third scored, but runner from first challenged the arm of Keen. The Rattlers center fielder threw out the runner at third by a wide margin. It was his thirteenth outfield assist of the season and the 38th of the year by a Rattlers outfielder. That was fortunate. The next batter doubled to put runners at second and third.

Adrian Rosario came on and got the final out of the inning when TJ Mittelstaedt made a diving catch on a sinking line drive.

Wisconsin carried the 6-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning. Eric Marzec gave up a leadoff homer to Jesse Bosnik and walked Nick Akins to start the inning. But, Marzec bounced back with a strikeout of Jacobs and got Jon Garcia to ground into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play to secure the victory.
The Timber Rattlers are off on Tuesday. They return to action on Wednesday at Alliant Energy Field in Clinton, Iowa against the LumbkerKings. Maverick Lasker (1-3, 5.53) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Nate Reed (2-3, 3.86) is set to start for Clinton. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

Miller fanned four and, of course, hit a batter. He posted an 8/4 GO/FO and threw 90 pitches and 53 strikes. Is ~100 excellent plate appearances and a new position enough to get Paciorek a spot near the bottom of my Power 50 ballot? I don't think so, but it's something I'm wrestling with at the moment. Keen's steal was his 32nd of the year. Nick Ramirez did not arrive in time to take part in the game.

The Rattlers did answer in the top of the 3rd but could have done so much more loudly:

Wisconsin Top of the 3rd
  • Joseph Paciorek singles on a ground ball to right fielder Jonathan Garcia.
  • Mike Brownstein out on a sacrifice bunt to first baseman Chris Jacobs. Joseph Paciorek to 2nd.
  • Reggie Keen singles on a ground ball to right fielder Jonathan Garcia. Joseph Paciorek scores. Reggie Keen to 2nd on the throw.
  • Nick Shaw walks.
  • T. J. Mittelstaedt walks. Reggie Keen to 3rd. Nick Shaw to 2nd.
  • Jason Rogers strikes out swinging.
  • Michael Walker strikes out swinging.

Final: @Nashville 8, Iowa 3

Even though they're just "September call-up material", both Taylor Green and Mat Gamel keep on keepin' on, collecting their 15th and 20th homers, respectively. Brandon Boggs joined them in playing long-ball. Green also had a single and a sac fly. Caleb Gindl was on twice with a single and a walk. Logan Schafer was 1-4. Josh Butler pitched pretty well after leaving his last start when he was hit on the leg with a line drive: 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HR, 11/4 GO/FO, 98 pitches, 57 strikes. He's been surprisingly effective over the last month, with the peripherals to back it up. Mike McClendon stranded the bases loaded in the 8th and pitched a scoreless 9th for the save.

The score was 6-3 when McClendon was called on:

Iowa Top of the 8th
  • Brett Jackson singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Mat Gamel.
  • DJ LeMahieu singles on a ground ball to second baseman Taylor Green. Brett Jackson out at 3rd, second baseman Taylor Green to shortstop Edwin Maysonet.
  • Tyler Colvin strikes out swinging.
  • Chris Robinson singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Donovan Hand. DJ LeMahieu to 2nd.
  • Scott Moore singles on a ground ball to left fielder Brandon Boggs. DJ LeMahieu scores. Chris Robinson to 2nd.
  • Lou Montanez reaches on missed catch error by first baseman Jordan Brown, assist to shortstop Edwin Maysonet. Chris Robinson to 3rd. Scott Moore to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Mike McClendon replaces Donovan Hand, batting 9th.
  • Ryan Flaherty called out on strikes.

To me I think the most impressive thing with D'Vo is how much has brought down the k's so far this season, He struck out about 31% of time in 2010 and thus far is around only 15% of the time in 2011. The massive holes in his swing killed him last year. Only thing is, can someone please teach him how to steal and not be picked off!?! Such an athlete but so far 26 of 51...yikes

He's improving that K rate as the season is progressing too. He's fanned just 3 times in his last 41 ABs. His improvement is amazing.

Final: @Helena 7, Casper 3

Brewers get back on track

By Amber Kuehn, Helena Independent Record

The fans at Kindrick Legion Field stomped their feet as Helena reliever Jacob Barnes stared down Casper’s Julian Yan on the 0-2 count.

As Yan fouled off pitch after pitch, the crowd of 1,632 never let up, the stomps growing louder and quicker each time the ball glanced off the bat.

When Barnes finally got Yan to chase one on the outside corner for the final out, the fans cheered at last. The Brewers had just snapped a two-game skid, beating the Ghosts 7-3 to get back on the winning track at home.

“It was definitely getting kind of annoying that he kept battling. He even fouled off one that hit the ground first,” Barnes joked after earning his first professional save. “In college I closed a lot, so it felt good to be back there at the end of the game. I felt right at home.”

Brewers pitchers shut down Casper for the third time this year. Starter Andy Moye kept his record perfect, picking up his fourth win of the season after hurling a four-hitter through 6 2/3 innings, and Barnes threw shutout ball the rest of the way, striking out the side in the ninth to finish out the game. The pair was backed by plenty of run support, as the Helena offense came alive a day after scoring just one run in a 9-1 loss to Idaho Falls.

“It definitely felt good to get the win,” said outfielder John Dishon, who was 2 for 4 with a double, a triple, a stolen base, an RBI and two runs scored. “As far as the series before, we put that in the past ... That’s the good thing about baseball, there’s always another day. Our team realizes that.

“We had a bad day yesterday but we bounced back and showed up ready to hit.”

The Brewers struck first blood Monday in the three-game series opener, something they’ve only done 14 times this season. Robbie Garvey laid down a bunt single to start the game, and came home on a two-run bomb by Parker Berberet that broke the catcher’s 1-for-13 slump and gave the hosts the early lead. Kyle Dhanani then doubled with two outs, setting up Ben McMahan for his first pro hit — an RBI single that made it 3-0.

Yan, just 19 years old but far from the youngest member of the youthful Ghosts squad, answered with a two-run homer of his own, battling back from an 0-2 count in the second to take Moye deep and cut the Brewer’s lead to just a run.

Helena — which had 13 hits, seven of them for extra bases — added an insurance run in the bottom half of the second. But Casper responded with another two-out rally to score a run in the fourth frame. It would be the last run scored by the visitors, who saw their on-base woes continue. The Ghosts (9-25) are now just 3-for-68 with runners in scoring position.

The Brewers took a two-run lead in the sixth inning, when Dishon doubled to left field and Robert De La Cruz failed to make a play on the ball, losing both of his shoes. Dishon stole third on the next pitch, then later came home on Garvey’s RBI groundout. Garvey was stellar on the day, going 3 for 5 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs.

Helena tacked on another two insurance runs in the eighth, thanks to a Casper error and RBIs by Dishon and Adrian Williams.

“From start to finish in that ball game, jumping out to that early lead then scoring some insurance runs late, it was big for us,” Brewers manager Joe Ayrault said. “They’re a young team but they’ve got some nice prospects ... we’ve won a couple, they’ve won a couple. That’s a nice win for us.”

NOTES: Helena’s hot-hitting first baseman Nick Ramirez was promoted to low-A Wisconsin following Sunday’s game. Ramirez, called up when Timber Rattlers infielder Cody Hawn went on the DL, batted .369 with a league-leading eight homers and 30 RBIs through 23 games. The fourth-round draft pick also had a stretch of five straight days with a home run and was the Pioneer League Player of the Week the past two weeks ... The reigning Pioneer League champion Brewers, at 16-18, have been mathematically elminated from first-half title contention in the North Division ... RHP Drew Gagnon (0-1, 9.82) takes the mound for Helena tonight, facing his brother’s (Tyler Gagnon stats) former team. Alex Gillingham (1-3, 5.96) gets the nod for the Ghosts.

Helena Box Score

Moye and Barnes combined to fan 11 and walk one; four Brewers with multi-hit games; two of CF Robbie Garvey's three hits were doubles and he drove in two; LF John Dishon tripled, doubled, stole his 8th base in ten tries and drove in one; clean defense = happy coaches...

Helena Play-by-Play

Nice quick start --

Helena Bottom of the 1st

  • Robert Garvey singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Samuel Mende.
  • Yadiel Rivera lines out to center fielder David Kandilas.

Arizona Box Score

Looks a lot like a big league Brewers - Giants score, although these Giants won despite two errors and two wild pitches; LHP Del Howell, down from Wisconsin, with an OK effort -- 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HBP; 22-year-old LHP Manuel Ruiz followed with two hitless frames (one BB, one HBP); only three base hits and 14 K's for Brewer batters as the struggles continue for Ronny Puello, Jalen Harris, and Renaldo Jenkins (.221, .435 and .583 OPS, respectively, each striking out over 1/3 of their AB's)...

I must admit that Richardson stealth improvement had eluded me to this point, but I wholeheartedly agree that it is very nice to see real improvement in the prototypical raw toolsy player. I wonder if he has an outside shot at being the highest rated position player in BAs top ten next year?

Was at all three games here in Midland. The T-Rats looked great. The Loons definitely looked frustrated all weekend by the T-Rats. Their manager got ejected Sunday and then 2 players last night. All the Loons announcers could say was how horrible the umps were. Made me laugh. Good to see some T-Rats support over here in Michigan. Glad I wasn't the only one in the stands in my Brewers gear. Mike Walker and TJ Middlestadt look to be the best bats on the T-Rats that are currently on the team.
