Final: Brevard County 14, @St. Lucie 6

Pretty box score. Every Sea Cow starter had at least one hit, including Brent Dean in his first game above Rookie ball. All told, the Manatees collected 19 hits in total, and the Mets 16 of their own, though obviously BC's proved to be a little more fruitful. Scooter Gennett paced the offense with four knocks, including a double, and has raised his average all the up to .292. Kentrail Davis followed with three of his own, one of them a triple, and drove in five runs. D'Vontrey Richardson, Hunter Morris, Shea Vucinich, Josh Prince, and Chris Dennis each had two hits. Deuces were wild for Prince: he also stole two bases--and committed two errors. Evan Anundsen turned in a fine start, allowing a run in six innings with a 4/0 K/BB and a 9/1 GO/FO.

The 'Tees drew first blood (and second, and third, and fourth, and fifth, and sixth) quickly:

Brevard County Top of the 1st
  • Scooter Gennett singles on a line drive to left fielder Pedro Zapata.
  • Kentrail Davis reaches on fielding error by second baseman Robbie Shields. Scooter Gennett to 2nd.
  • D' Vontrey Richardson singles on a line drive to left fielder Pedro Zapata. Scooter Gennett scores. Kentrail Davis to 2nd.
  • Hunter Morris singles on a ground ball to right fielder Cory Vaughn. Kentrail Davis scores. D' Vontrey Richardson scores. Hunter Morris to 3rd. Fielding error by right fielder Cory Vaughn.
  • Shea Vucinich singles on a fly ball to right fielder Cory Vaughn. Hunter Morris scores.
  • Josh Prince singles on a ground ball to left fielder Pedro Zapata. Shea Vucinich to 2nd.
  • Scott Krieger called out on strikes.
  • Chris Dennis singles on a line drive to left fielder Pedro Zapata. Shea Vucinich scores. Josh Prince to 2nd.
  • With Brent Dean batting, Josh Prince steals (15) 3rd base. Chris Dennis steals (2) 2nd base.
  • Brent Dean strikes out swinging.
  • Scooter Gennett singles on a line drive to left fielder Pedro Zapata. Josh Prince scores. Chris Dennis out at home on the throw, left fielder Pedro Zapata to catcher Francisco Pena.

Final: Wisconsin 8, @Great Lakes 6

Rattlers start series in Great Lakes with a win
Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers
MIDLAND, MI – First, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers outslugged the Great Lakes Loons Saturday night at Down Diamond. Then, the Rattlers bullpen shut the door on the Loons for an 8-6 victory.
TJ Mittelstaedt start the game with a single, but wound up at third before the play ended. The Rattlers leadoff hitter blooped a single inside the left field line. Great Lakes shortstop Casio Grinder got to the ball, but booted it into foul territory to let Mittelstaedt take second. Then, Grinder inexplicably tossed the ball to a fan in the stands to let Mittelstaedt go to third base.

Nick Shaw cashed in Mittelstaedt with a single for a 1-0 Rattlers lead. Later in the inning, Greg Hopkins doubled in Shaw for a 2-0 advantage.

Great Lakes (56-41 overall, 17-11 second half) came back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Wisconsin starting pitcher Charly Bashara walked the first two batters of the bottom of the first. One out later, Nick Akins doubled to left-center and both Loons runners scored.

Wisconsin (50-48, 12-16) went back in front in the top of the second thanks to a bunt single and three walks. Mike Walker drew the third walk of the inning issued by Great Lakes starter Ryan Christenson, a bases loaded walk to force in a run for a 3-2 lead.

But, the Loons answered right back in the bottom of the second. Michael Pericht hit a leadoff homer to left-center to tie the game.

The Rattlers put a crooked number on the board in the top of the third. Hopkins singled to start the inning. Chad Stang followed with an RBI double. Wisconsin loaded the bases on a bunt single by Mike Brownstein and a walk to Joey Paciorek and that drove Christenson out of the game.

Franklin Romero, Jr. greeted reliever John Housey with a sacrifice fly to score Stang and move Brownstein to third base. Then, Housey balked to let Brownstein score and move Paciorek into scoring position. Mittelstaedt drove a single to center and Paciorek crossed the plate to put the Rattlers up 7-3.

Jesse Bosnik got the Loons back on the scoreboard with a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Bashara got into trouble in the fifth inning as Great Lakes put runners on first and third with no outs, but the lefty fought back to get the next three batters and keep the Rattlers up by three runs.

That lead was extended in the seventh inning. Jason Rogers cracked a long home run to right-center to start the frame and Wisconsin went up 8-4.

Great Lakes pulled closer in the bottom of the seventh inning with a pair of runs. Grider reached on an infield single and took second on a throwing error. An RBI double by Bobby Coyle scored Grider. After a grounder sent Coyle to third, a wild pitch let Coyle score to make the score 8-6.

But, the Loons would get no closer. Greg Holle tossed a perfect eighth inning. Then, Eric Marzec pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save of the season to nail down Wisconsin’s second straight win.

Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond. Wisconsin has Brooks Hall (5-2, 3.82) as their scheduled starting pitcher. The Loons send Brett Montgomery (4-1, 3.59) to the mound. Game time is 1:05pm CDT. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:45pm.

Holle tossed a perfect 8th, but he also allowed the two runs in the 7th. Paciorek's cooled off with the bat, though he's still taking his walks (two tonight). As MH mentioned earlier, Cody Hawn was absent again.

Final: @Nashville 4, Iowa 1

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Right-hander Frankie De La Cruz turned in an outstanding start and Caleb Gindl belted a two-run homer to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 4-1 victory over the Iowa Cubs in front of 8,744 fans on Saturday night at Greer Stadium.

De La Cruz (4-6), who finished one out short of Nashville's first nine-inning complete game of the year, struck out a Sounds season-high 10 batters in the contest. He allowed one run on six hits while walking only one batter during his 109-pitch effort.

With the victory, Nashville (49-52) extended its longest winning streak of the year to six games; all of those triumphs have come against the division-rival Cubs as the teams are in the midst of eight consecutive games against one another.

Sounds second baseman Taylor Green gave the home team a 1-0 lead in the first inning when he laced an RBI double down the right field line off Iowa starter Alberto Cabrera. The two-bagger plated Logan Schafer, who had drawn an inning-opening walk.

Gindl (2-for-2) upped the Nashville advantage to 3-0 in the fourth when he belted a two-run homer off Cabrera that careened off the clubhouse building beyond the right-center wall. The blast, Gindl's 13th roundtripper of the year, also plated Mat Gamel, who reached on a one-out single.

The red-hot Gindl extended the Sounds' longest active hitting streak to nine games (13-for-36, .361) with the blast.

Schafer, the new Nashville center fielder, kept Iowa off the board in the fifth when he caught a bases-loaded fly ball off the bat of Brett Jackson and fired a strike to catcher Mike Rivera to nail Marwin Gonzalez for an inning-ending double play. It marked the 17th runner thrown out at the plate by a Sounds outfielder this season.

The Sounds added a run to make it 4-0 in the sixth when Gamel drew his second walk of the night and scored when Rivera doubled off the base of the wall in left-center.

Iowa broke up De La Cruz's shutout bid with an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, a bouncer off the bat of Brad Snyder caromed off the back of the first base bag and the altered trajectory allowed the ball to narrowly elude first baseman Erick Almonte. The next hitter, former Vanderbilt standout Ryan Flaherty, lifted a fly ball double off the left field wall to plate Snyder with the lone Cubs run of the evening.

Mike McClendon took over on the hill for Nashville and struck out pinch-hitter Tyler Colvin to end the game and notch his fourth save of the year.

Cabrera (1-3) took the loss for Iowa after allowing four runs on seven hits over six innings of work.

The teams continue the series with another 6:35 p.m. meeting on Sunday evening. The Sounds have not announced their starting pitcher for the contest. Iowa will send right-hander Nick Struck (0-3, 5.63) to the hill.

About as dominant a start as we've seen this year. In addition to all the good stuff mentioned above, FDLC also posted an 11/2 GO/FO. Schafer was 1-2 with two walks; the promotion has invigorated his plate discipline. Gindl was perfect at the plate, walking in his third plate appearance.

wow, great to see Anundsen turning it around. It's been much better since April, but now to go deep into a game, no walks, 9:1 GO:FO....this is huge. He was a favorite prospect to follow. We need some word on his velocity if this keeps up.

Final: Chattanooga 5, @Huntsville 4

Terrible game. Dan Merklinger had coasted through seven shutout innings and had a 4-0 lead, but then the 8th inning happened. Merk put two men on, and in came Darren Byrd, who poured gasoline on the situation by walking two and allowing a hit while recording no outs. Robert Hinton inherited the bases loaded and allowed the tying runs to score, along with the winning run in the 9th. Erik Komatsu had a vintage Cool Breeze night, 2-3 with a double and two walks; he's again been playing center field in the wake of Logan Schafer's promotion. Brock Kjeldgaard had three hits, and Sean Halton two. Khris Davis went 1-5 in his first start. Lee Haydel did not play.

Chattanooga Top of the 8th

No wonder Kentrail Davis' biggest issue in the batter's box has been timing. The former first-round Draft pick is in a rush to get out Brevard County.

Shedding thoughts of a season he called laced with "confidence-killers," the Brewers prospect collected a career-high five RBIs in the Manatees' 14-6 road win over the St. Lucie Mets, who had won six straight.

Davis, who turned 23 last month, has eight RBIs over his last five games. During that span, he's 9-for-23 to raise his average to .258, the highest it's been since May 26.

"It's been a long year for me," said Davis, who batted .244 in 33 games for the Class A Advanced Manatees last season. "I definitely want to be a little farther than I am now. I'd be lying if I [didn't] say that sometimes you just don't know what you're doing.

"It's just a grind out here. Just sticking with it, talking to my coaches and getting as much information as possible. Everybody is going to struggle, and we all know that as baseball players. The thing is, I always want to get out of [a slump] a lot quicker."

The left-handed-hitting outfielder was 1-for-4 with a two-run single through seven innings Saturday, then got busy. He singled home another run in the eighth and his triple in the ninth plated two more teammates.

"I was looking for something on the outer half, but he came in with an inside changeup," Davis said of his ninth-inning matchup with reliever Estarlin Morel. "I stayed back and put a good swing on it. ... I hit down the [right-field] line in no-man's land."

Aside from holding his hands lower in the batter's box -- the minor adjustment by his standards has helped during his current hot streak -- Davis said the reason for his offensive upswing isn't entirely physical.

"The biggest thing hasn't been a change to my swing, it's being in a ready position," said Davis, the 38th overall pick in 2009. "Timing has been a big issue for me, being in a good position to put a swing on the ball."

Work with batting coach Dwayne Hosey is beginning to pay off. Including Saturday's performance, Davis is hitting .263 with runners in scoring position.

"Being able to help the team out and drive in some runs," the Alabama native said, "that's something I have struggled with this year. It felt really good to actually get the RBIs."

Fellow 2009 draftee Scooter Gennett went 4-for-6 and was one of seven Manatees to record at least two hits.

Much of the damage was done against Mets starter Gregory Peavey (3-2), who surrendered nine runs -- seven earned -- over 2 1/3 frames.

Brevard County's Evan Anundsen (3-2) gave up a run on seven hits over a season-high six innings, fanning four and hitting two batters.

Final: Idaho Falls 6, @Helena 5

Helena Box Score

A furious four-run rally by Helena fell one run short in the bottom of the 9th, and it was as close as it could've been without succeeding. Down 6-1, Tyler Roberts kicked off the inning with a double, followed by a Max Walla single. Kyle Dhanani struck out, but Mike Nemeth then singled in Roberts. Kenny Allison followed with a three-run blast to left to get the Brewers within one run. Adrian Williams then singled, and advanced to second base on a pickoff throwing error by Chukars reliever Cody Fassold. Robbie Garvey grounded out to the right side of the infield, & Williams was able to advance to third. Yadiel Rivera stepped to the plate, with a chance to build his legend as a Brewers prospect... but it wasn't to be, as the young shortstop flew out to right to end the game.

The only other run Helena managed came on a sac fly RBI by Nemeth in the 5th, driving in Walla, who'd led off the inning with a single. Dhanani had doubled on a grounder down the leftfield line after Walla, advancing Max to third. Allison finished 2-4, & was the standout offensive player with his clutch homerun. Walla went 2-3 with two singles & a walk; Nemeth was 2-3 with two singles & two RBI. The doubles by Dhanani & Roberts were their only hits on the night. Rivera & Williams each added one single; Garvey walked once.

Eau Claire native, UW-Milwaukee product, & 2011 38th-rounder Chad Pierce had a forgettable start, allowing four runs (three earned), six hits, & one walk over five innings; he struck out five. Kevin Shackleford worked two scoreless innings, but sandwiched them around a rough 7th -- in which he hit the leadoff batter, allowed two singles, a double, & two earned runs. Seth Harvey was impressive in the 9th as he struck out the side in order.

Final: AZL Cubs 8, @AZL Brewers 2

AZL Box Score

After the Brewers scored twice in the 1st inning, the Cubs responded with four in the 2nd, & kept the Brewers off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Brae Wright had his second straight rough outing, allowing four hits, four runs (all earned) & two walks in two innings. Relievers Chad Thompson & Elliot Glynn were the only pitchers to work scoreless innings for the Brewers. Thompson's was more dramatic -- he allowed a leadoff single & a walk before getting a fielder's choice groundout & two strikeouts to end the 8th. Glynn overcame two throwing errors by his defense by striking out two & recording the final out of the top of the 9th on a flyout to centerfield.

Catcher Adam Weisenburg had a single & a "triple" (see the p-b-p). Shortstop Brandon Macias doubled in the first inning, & was plated by a single from Hitaniel Arias; both were the players' only hits in the game (though Arias had a stolen base). Jose Garcia's single was the only other hit for the Brewers; leadoff man & second baseman Renaldo Jenkins walked once.

Cubs relievers Brian Smith (3 IP, 1 H, 0 BB/4 K) & Ryan Hartman (2 IP, 0 H, 0 BB/4 K) combined to shut out the Brewers after starter Roderik Pichardo was lifted from the game.

AZL Play-by-Play

I have to know... how was this a triple? With the catcher Weisenburg running... no error shown... ?

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 6th
  • Adam Weisenburger triples (1) on a pop up to catcher Neftali Rosario.
  • Hitaniel Arias strikes out swinging.
  • Jalen
Harris flies into double play, right fielder Gregori Gonzalez to
catcher Neftali Rosario. Adam Weisenburger out at home on the throw.

And that's a painful way to end an inning. They must've been taking cues from the big-league Brewers.

Crew Can't Complete Comeback

By Nicholas Allen

The Brewers trailed Idaho Falls 6-1 entering the ninth inning Saturday

night but put up four runs on five hits and had a runner on third base

when the final out was recorded. Tyler Roberts led off with a double

down the left-field line and Max Walla singled up the middle to follow.

Mike Nemeth's RBI single scored Roberts, leading to Kenny Allison's

three run homer that brought the score to within one. Adrian Williams

would reach later in the inning, but the Brewers could not push him

across, falling to the Chukars 6-5 at Kindrick Legion Field.

Chad Pierce (0-3) started for the Brewers, going five innings and

allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and striking out five.

Kevin Shackelford followed with two runs over three innings and Seth

Harvey gave the Brewers a chance by striking out the side in the ninth.

Nick Ramirez had his eleven-game hit-streak snapped with an 0-for-4

night, but third baseman Kyle Dhanani stretch his to a league-leading

13 games with a fifth inning double.

The four-game series concludes Sunday, with a 1:05 scheduled start. Mike

Strong (2-0, 3.76) will be on the mound for the Brewers as they look to

even the series before welcoming the Casper for a three-game set

starting Monday.
