Final: @DSL Mariners 12, DSL Brewers 11

Unbelievable. The Cerveceritos overcame 6-1 and 10-7 deficits only to lose, yet again, to their nemesis. LHP Marcos Padilla had a particularly poor game, allowing four runs in just one inning. Figures that in a game where they scored 11 runs Orlando Arcia would only record one hit, but at least it was a double; he struck out twice after having done so only 11 times total entering today. Congrats to promising 17-year-old 3B Esthervin Matos, who cracked his first professional homer and also singled and walked; he's now hitting .370/.482/.543 through his first 15 games. Once-promising Jose Pena had three hits, including two doubles, but is still hitting just .195. Along with Pena and Matos, unheralded middle infielders Francisco Castillo and Alejandro Mendoza led the charge with four and three hits, respectively; Castillo tripled and doubled, while Mendoza joined Pena with two two-baggers.

The walk-off ending was pretty shoddy stuff on the Brewers' part:

DSL Mariners Bottom of the 9th
  • Westlonder Marcelino walks.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Wilton Martinez replaces Westlonder Marcelino.
  • With Diego Mina batting, wild pitch by Angel Ventura, Wilton Martinez to 2nd.
  • With Diego Mina batting, wild pitch by Angel Ventura, Wilton Martinez to 3rd.
  • Pitcher Change: Carlos Sosa replaces Angel Ventura.
  • Diego Mina singles on a fly ball to center fielder Dionis Hinojosa. Wilton Martinez scores.

Rattlers crack Lugnuts
Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

LANSING, MI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Lansing Lugnuts 7-2 Friday night at Cooley Law School Stadium behind a fast start from the offense and a strong start from Jimmy Nelson.
TJ Mittelstaedt got the Rattlers (49-48 overall, 11-16 second half) off on the right foot. The Wisconsin leadoff batter crushed the first pitch of the game for a long home run to right-center. Later in the inning, Greg Hopkins made the score 2-0 with an RBI double.

Lansing (55-39, 17-10) had runners at second and third with one out in the bottom of the first inning. But, Rattlers starting pitcher Nelson avoided allowing a run with a popup and a ground out.

The Rattlers went right back on the attack in the top of the second. Franklin Romero, Jr. singled and stole second to start the inning. Mittelstaedt reached on an infield single and an ill-advised throw to first let Romero score. Mittelstaedt would take second on the play. Nick Shaw made it 4-0 with an RBI single.

Michael Crouse put Lansing on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run to left-center.
That home run by Crouse was the only run allowed by Nelson. The right-hander tossed six innings, gave up four hits, and struck out six.

The Rattlers offense scored three more times in the top of the seventh inning. Mittelstaedt drew a one out walk. Shaw followed with an RBI triple. Mike Walker’s double plated Shaw. Later in the frame, Walker scored on a wild pitch for a 7-1 lead.

Lansing scored a run in the bottom of the eighth without a hit off reliever Adrian Rosario. A pair of one out walks, a passed ball, and an RBI grounder by Marcus Knecht made the score 7-2. Alan Williams, one of the new Rattlers relief pitchers, relieved Rosario and got the final out.

Williams worked a scoreless ninth inning to close out the Lugnuts.
The Timber Rattlers continue their road trip with a game against the Great Lakes Loons on Saturday night at Down Diamond in Midland, Michigan. Charly Bashara (3-3, 4.69) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Ryan Christenson (7-6, 4.68) is the scheduled starter for the Loons. Game time is 6:05pm CDT. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:45pm.

Excellent start by Nelson, especially in the walks departments; seems like he's good for at least a couple every game, but he didn't walk anyone tonight, though he did hit a batter. Nice A-ball debut for Alan Williams, too--he'll be on my Power 50 ballot. Mittelstaedt didn't play between the 16th and yesterday, so while he had consecutive three-hit games just four games ago, it seems like it's been awhile. Anyway, nice to see him get on four times; he also swiped his 17th bag. Jason Rogers contributed two hits and a walk. No Cody Hawn again. I really wish the Brewers had signed Marcus Knecht in 2008.

Final: @Huntsville 3, Chattanooga 2

For once Michael Bowman didn't get annihilated, and scoreless innings from Lucas Luetge, Santo Manzanillo, and Rob Wooten let the Stars come back for the win with runs in the 7th and 9th. This was Manzanillo's sixth inning at AA, and he finally recorded his first strikeout; thankfully, he's also walked just one (one walk used to be a good inning for Santo Manzanillo). Zelous Wheeler was the only star with multiple hits, though Erik Komatsu doubled and walked and Martin Maldonado was also on twice with a hit and a free pass. Khris Davis did not start but struck out as a pinch hitter in his first AA at-bat.

Walk-off:

Huntsville Bottom of the 9th
  • Zelous Wheeler singles on a line drive to right fielder Kyle Russell.
  • With Erik Komatsu batting, Zelous Wheeler steals (3) 2nd base.
  • Erik Komatsu walks.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard grounds into a force out, shortstop Ivan Ochoa to second baseman Elian Herrera. Zelous Wheeler to 3rd. Erik Komatsu out at 2nd. Brock Kjeldgaard to 1st.
  • Martin Maldonado walks. Brock Kjeldgaard to 2nd.
  • Sergio Miranda singles on a fly ball to center fielder Brad Coon. Zelous Wheeler scores. Brock Kjeldgaard to 3rd. Martin Maldonado to 2nd.

Final: @Nashville 5, Iowa 2

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds continued their recent hot play on Friday evening at Greer Stadium, defeating the division-rival Iowa Cubs by a 5-2 margin in the opener of a four-game series.

The win was the fifth in a row for Nashville (48-52), all against the I-Cubs.

Center fielder Logan Schafer enjoyed a solid Triple-A debut for the Sounds, going 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, run scored, and stolen base. In addition, he made an outstanding running catch of a Ryan Flaherty fly ball at the wall in right-center in the fifth.

Iowa catcher Welington Castillo - who recorded three of the Cubs' four hits on the night and missed the cycle by a triple - gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when he belted a one-out solo homer to center off Sounds starter Amaury Rivas, the backstop's 14th longball of the season.

The Sounds took a 4-1 lead in the third when they batted around against Cubs starter and former Milwaukee Brewer Dave Bush.

Nashville tied the game when Schafer recorded his first career Triple-A hit, an RBI single to left that plated Caleb Gindl from second to make it a 1-1 contest. Later in the frame, the Sounds took a 3-1 lead when Erick Almonte (2-for-3) ripped a two-out, two-run single up the middle to bring in Schafer and Edwin Maysonet. Mat Gamel blooped an opposite-field ducksnort to left that dropped right onto the foul line for an RBI single that knocked in Taylor Green and increased the Sounds' advantage to 4-1.

Jordan Brown added a run for Nashville in the fourth when he lifted a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to center to drive in Gindl, marking the eighth game in his last nine that Brown has recorded an RBI.

The I-Cubs got a run back in the fifth when pinch-hitter Jonathon Mota drove in Castillo with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly of his own.

Rivas (7-9) picked up his team-leading seventh victory for the Sounds after allowing two runs on two runs on two hits while walking three batters and striking out seven in five frames.

Left-hander Daniel Meadows followed Rivas with an outstanding relief effort, working 3 1/3 scoreless innings and allowing only two hits while striking out five. The southpaw threw 25 of his 33 pitches for strikes.

Jim Henderson closed out the contest by retiring the final two batters.

Bush (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Iowa after giving up five runs on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings of action.

The teams continue the series with a 6:35 p.m. matchup on Saturday night. Right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (3-6, 4.42) will make the start for the Sounds and face Iowa right-hander Alberto Cabrera (1-2, 6.53).

Schafer also walked; great to see him get off on the right foot. We'll just pretend he played all year last year at Huntsville and has spent this season at Nashville--see, right on track. Nice strikeout total for Rivas, though seeing him leave after just five innings and 78 pitches is a little odd, and his spot in the order did not come up in the previous half inning. Love that line by Meadows. He is left-handed. The Brewers do not have a left-handed reliever. Ergo, all men are Socrates. Green did not get on base and thus is ineligible for promotion for another two months; however, had he gotten on base, it would merely be evidence of the inferiority of AAA pitches and he would be ineligible for promotion for another two months. Sorry, Taylor--when you play the game of third base, you either win or you die.

The AZL Brewers have scored 5 runs in four innings. The runs have been scored by:

  • Hit batter with the bases loaded
  • Walk with the bases loaded
  • Sacrifice double play (sacrifice with runner scoring and a second runner out trying to advance after the score)
  • Wild pitch
  • Fielding error

That's a pretty random potpourri, even for rookie ball.

Hehe...beautiful write-up!

On a side note, this team sorta epitomizes why I'm not quite as down on our system as others may be. Do we have any blue-chip prospects on this squad? No, of course not. But what we do have are several guys who can contribute in support roles for this team.

Rivas-has the look of a nice long man out of the pen, perhaps a back of the rotation type starter.

Schafer-looks like a fringe starter in CF. If he proves he can hit .285/.350, there is no reason he can't be an everyday big leaguer with his defense.

Green-....well, as you said, Green obviously can't and won't be a everyday big leaguer. Mat Gamel and his 9 At Bats has proven without any doubt that you can't come up and produce, regardless of your AAA production. Seriously though, he's another guy, could be a fringe starter, same as Schaefer. If he can put up that same line, which I'm absolutely convinced he can as I see him as a Mark Loretta type player with slightly more pop and probably not as high of a BA, he could serve as starter for us.

Gamel, everyone seems to be on the same page with him. He's got about as clean and pretty a swing as I've seen from any left hander in the Brewers system in some time. Just absolutely picture-esque swing. A Lyle Overbay type with more power who can also probably serve as a massive upgrade defensively to Prince.

Caleb Gindl-Here again, you've got a guy who has the potential to be an everyday big league player, and while some differ on his upside, ie, 4th OF'er, or an above average everyday starter, he should provide some nice value for you moving forward.

Michael Fiers, McClendon, de la Cruz-All look like they have the ability to be future BP pieces to varying degrees.

Meadows-Could serve as an effective Loogy for this team moving forward, possibly this year.

Braddock-Obviously he is in another group as he should be up with the big league team, and has been, but he's got everything you need physically to be a future closer or SU man.

We've got that core group of stars, Weeks, Braun, Greinke, Marcum, Gallardo and currently Prince. We really just need to supplement that talent with good, solid above average players who can play defense and get on at a solid clip. Obviously you hope that you can produce some elite, 4.5 WAR type players, but given what we have, if we can surround the stars with 2.5 type guys, improve our team defense, and a couple power arms out of the pen, that goes a LONG way to keeping costs down, as those types are extremely valuable in years 1-3.

We could see the Brewers, either by plan or by circumstances, move more towards better defense and higher OBP vs higher slugging. They'll still have pop with Braun, Weeks, and to some degree with Hart and Gamel. But if guys like Green, Gindl, Komatsu, Davis, etc. end up on the roster, they will have a little different look to them. Not good or bad necessarily, just different.

I would argue that's definitely a good thing.

.350 or better OBP's up and down the lineup, and a defense comprised of mostly average defenders goes a long way for a pitching staff, and a more consistent offense.

And, as you said, with Braun, Weeks, Hart and Gamel, we'll have some pop still. I would argue that Lucroy should offer solid pop for a Catcher and could hit 12-16 HR's, and Green has the ability to hit for a few more than that on each end.

In fact, if Komatsu can translate his spectacular OBP's to the next level, I'd be fine with taking Hart's slugging out of the lineup and replacing it with Komatsu. The upgrade defensively and the potential for a .380-.390 OBP from the left side would more than make up for the loss o f Hart's power IMO.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I believe that the subtraction of Prince gives the Brewers a golden opportunity to shift their priorities a bit more to a Twins type model, and with the power arms we've got and strikeout pitchers in the rotation, that could serve us very well moving forward.

Final: @Helena 8, Idaho Falls 2

Brewers Clip Chukars

Helena Brewers

Eric Arnett (2-2) went seven strong innings for the Brewers Friday

night, allowing just two earned runs. The right-hander struck out seven

and scattered eight hits. David Goforth added two clean innings,

striking out three as the Brewers defeated the Idaho Falls Chukars 8-2

in Helena.

Nick Ramirez again led the Brewers offensively, going 2-for-4 and

driving in two runs and extending his hitting streak to 11 games.

Ramirez got things started for the Crew, who trailed 2-0 in the bottom

of the fourth, doubling to lead off the inning. He would come around to

score on Max Walla's double. Tyler Roberts also scored on the play as

Chukars catcher Edul Escobar could not handle the throw from the

outfield. Ramirez gave the Brewers a 4-2 lead in the fifth, with a two

RBI double to score Gant Elmore and Robbie Garvey.

The Brewers blew the score open in the sixth, adding four runs with two

outs. Max Walla led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a

ground out and then stole third base. Elmore walked and Garvey followed

with a hit-and-run single through the hole on the right side, scoring

Walla and sending Elmore to third. With runners on the corners, Garvey

and Elmore completed a successful double-steal, scoring Garvey all the

way from first after a throwing error by Idaho Falls second baseman

Michael Liberto. Yadiel Rivera followed with his seventh home run of the

season to bring the game to its final margin.

The teams will meet again in the third game of the four game series at

Kindrick Legion Field Saturday. Gates open at six o'clock with first

pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm, with a series of promotions and giveaways

planned.

Helena Box Score

Eric Arnett optimists, rejoice! 7 IP, 8 H, 2 R/ER, 0 BB, 7 K. Goforth worked two perfect innings, striking out three.

Ramirez finished 2-4 with two doubles & two RBI. Walla went 2-3 with a double, a single, a walk, a stolen base, & two RBI. Leadoff man Robbie Garvey added two singles & a stolen base, while 9-hole hitter Elmore contributed two walks & one stolen base (of home, although it appears to have been the non-Jackie Robinson way). Mike Nemeth was 1-4, and John Dishon was 1-4 with a stolen base. Yadiel Rivera's home run was his lone hit of the game.

Helena Play-by-Play

6th inning, two-out magic in Helena:

Helena Bottom of the 6th
  • Max Walla singles on a line drive to right fielder Chris Elder.
  • Michael Nemeth grounds out to first baseman Richard Espy. Max Walla to 2nd.
  • John Dishon called out on strikes.
  • With Gant Elmore batting, Max Walla steals (1) 3rd base.
  • Gant Elmore walks.
  • Robert Garvey singles on a ground ball to right fielder Chris Elder. Max Walla scores. Gant Elmore to 3rd.
  • With
Yadiel Rivera batting, Gant Elmore steals (2) home. Robert Garvey
steals (5) 2nd base. Robert Garvey scores. Throwing error by second
    baseman Michael Liberto.
  • Yadiel Rivera homers (7) on a fly ball to left center field.
  • Pitcher Change: David Middendorf replaces Robert Penny.
  • Nick Ramirez flies out to left fielder Tyler Chism.

I think you can safely assume the home/2B double steal happened in reverse order from how it was typed in the game log. Not sure why the game log can't describe that play as it happened, as that seems incredibly relevant. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like Garvey stole 2B, the throw went to 2B, & Elmore took off for home... with a throwing error by Liberto trying to get Elmore at home, allowing Garvey to score. Relevant details like that are exactly what's needed from these lower levels of MiLB play... just in my humble opinion.

Final: AZL Brewers 7, @AZL Dodgers 5

AZL Box Score

The Brewers went up 5-0 after the top of the 2nd inning, only to see the Dodgers rally back to tie the game after the 6th. But the AZL Crew had two more runs left in them, taking the lead right back in the top of the 7th & securing the W.

Mark Rogers made the start for the Brewers, allowing five hits & three runs (all earned). He struck out six & didn't walk a batter. Not a dominant appearance, but certainly reason to hope for Brewers & Rogers fans. Come on back to Milwaukee, Mark! I'll guess that the Brewers will be aggressive with Mark if he's fully healthy... maybe one more AZL start, & bump him up to Brevard County... ideally then on to Huntsville & Nashville? Entirely my speculation.

2011 6th rounder Danny Keller (California, H.S.) had a rough inning+, allowing two hits, three walks, two runs/earned runs, & striking out one. Stephen Peterson recorded the next six outs without allowing a hit; he worked two shutout innings with one walk & three K's. Mike White worked a perfect 9th, with two groundouts & one pop-out to the second baseman.

Cameron Garfield went 1-4 with a double, but was replaced in the bottom of the 7th after a successful steal of 2B by the Dodgers' Devon Shines. Adam Weisenburger came on to replace Garfield; no word on whether the substitution was injury-related, but it certainly seems like a strange time to replace the young backstop Garfield if there was no injury concern.

Third baseman & 8-hitter Andres Martinez went 2-5; 9-hitter/right fielder Jose Garcia was 2-5 with one RBI. Centerfielder Malcolm Dowell had a single, a walk, & a stolen base. DH Hitaniel Arias was 0-3 with two walks & one RBI. Shortstop Brandon Macias also went hitless, but had two walks & one RBI. 2011 50th-rounder Matthew Franco (Florida, H.S.) went hitless as the left fielder, but walked three times & scored a run.

AZL Play-by-Play

After the Dodgers scored two to tie the game in the bottom of the 6th, the Brewers answered back with two runs of their own in the top of the 7th:

AZL Brewers Top of the 7th
  • Pitcher Change: Craig Stem replaces Matthew Laney.
  • Brandon Macias walks.
  • Matthew Franco out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Craig Stem to first baseman Jesus Valdez. Brandon Macias to 2nd.
  • Andres
Martinez reaches on fielding error by third baseman Alex Santana.
Brandon Macias scores. Andres Martinez to 3rd. Throwing error by
    third baseman Alex Santana.
  • Jose R. Garcia singles on a ground ball to center fielder Devin Shines. Andres Martinez scores.
  • Kevin Berard grounds out, third baseman Alex Santana to first baseman Jesus Valdez. Jose R. Garcia to 2nd.
  • Malcolm Dowell strikes out swinging.

Stephen Peterson & Mike White made sure the score held up for a victory.
