Brewer Fanatic Staff

Wanted to post early on, we'll have full details by mid-morning.

Top prospect watchers nationally will have an eye on this game (11:05 AM Central, there should be Palm Beach audio) --

Cardinals' young right-hander Carlos Martinez (1-1, 3.78 ERA) will make his second appearance at Roger Dean Stadium Wednesday afternoon against Tyler Thornburg (2-2, 2.05 ERA) and the Manatees.

That is just a ridiculous matchup and hopefully Tyler puts on a show.

***

With a similar 11:05 AM Central start time (10:45 pre-game), Chris Mehring will have his call of Timber Rattlers - Lugnuts from Lansing. Matt Miller will be on the mound for Wisconsin.

I imagine everyone else is just getting silence for the Palm Beach weekday matinee. Probably only a few hundred folks in attendance for this stellar pitching matchup, gotta love the Florida State League.

Well, Rattler Radio is hardly a bad alternative, to say the least, and the first inning is going swimmingly for Wisconsin, as Mike Walker and Jason Rogers go deep back-to-back, with the inning still in progress.

Thornburg is great again. What are the chances he gets to AA at some point this year?
Not sure I would qualify only 5 IP and 3 BB as great. I'd hope he'd more efficient at some point and those walks would return more to his WI rate before a promotion.

Pascual! (Said in the voice Jerry Seinfeld uses when Newman comes to the door).

I guess we can't hope the Mets will take Rolando off our hands as a PTBNL..

  • Greg Garcia hit by pitch.
  • Starlin Rodriguez flies out to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson.

  • Ted Obregon flies out to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson.

Willinsky didn't help.

Amazing how long Link Report devotees have been subjected to Rolando pascual's eye-piercing game logs.

By the way, we now have dueling 5-5 extra-inning game logs...

I'm still shocked that someone like Krestalude was let go and someone like Pascual is still pitching, dump the dude already.

In the Brewers' defense, I'm pretty sure Pascual would be considered to have a higher ceiling. If he can ever figure out how to throw a strike, he would be more likely to contribute than Krestalude. I'm not holding my breath though.

Final: @Lansing 6, Wisconsin 5, 12 innings

Lugnuts beat Rattlers 5-4 in 12 innings

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

LANSING, MI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had the team with the best record in the Midwest League down, but could not keep them there. The Lansing Lugnuts rallied to beat the Rattlers 6-5 in 12 innings on Jackson Field at Cooley Law School Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Wisconsin (48-47 overall, 10-15 second half) grabbed a very early lead. One out into the first inning, Reggie Keen tripled high off the wall in left-center. Mike Walker lined the next pitch over the wall in right-center for a two-run home run. Jason Rogers was next and his drive to right-center also cleared the wall for a home run.

Greg Hopkins continued the attack with a ringing double off the wall in left field. Joey Paciorek singled to send Hopkins to third base. Chad Stang’s RBI fielder’s choice sent Hopkins home for a 4-0 lead.

Lansing (54-38, 16-9) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning. They loaded the bases with one out. Rattlers starting pitcher Matt Miller got the second out, but Marcus Knecht (Brewers' draft pick, 23rd round, 2008) blooped in a single to left-center and drove in a pair of runs. Knecht was thrown out at second as he tried to stretch his hit into a double.

The Lugnuts continued to cut into Wisconsin’s lead. They scored again in the fourth inning on an RBI grounder by Eli Boike and the Rattlers lead was just 4-3.

Miller kept Wisconsin in front by putting up zeroes in the fifth and sixth innings. The right-hander went six innings, struck out five, and was in line for his fourth win of the season.

But, the Lugnuts tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Michael Crouse hit a two-run homer off reliever Stosh Wawrzasek with one out. Crouse’s twelfth homer of the season made the score 5-5.

The game stayed tied until the twelfth. Greg Holle came on to pitch and gave up a single to Crouse to start the inning. Crouse stole second and third with no outs to get into prime scoring position with the winning run.

The Rattlers decided to walk the next two batters intentionally to load the bases for a potential force play at the plate. Wisconsin got the play that they wanted, but not the result.

Holle got ahead of Knecht 0-2 and got him to send a high chopper to Mike Brownstein at second base. Brownstein was in on the grass and had to leap to grab the ball. Once he came down, he threw home for the force play, but Crouse was ruled safe and the Lugnuts picked up the win.

The series in Lansing continues on Thursday night. The Timber Rattlers have Maverick Lasker (1-2, 4.76) as their scheduled starting pitcher. The Lugnuts have Andrew Leibel (1-0, 1.50) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 6:05 PM CDT/7:05 PM EDT. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:45 PM.

Wisconsin Box Score

The Rattlers extra-inning blues continue, but you can't fault extra-frame pressure when you blow a 4-0 first inning lead; decent enough start for Matt Miller, and Rattler newcomer Casey Medlen tossed scoreless 9th, 10th, and 11th innings, facing just one over the minimum; all nine Rattlers had at least one base hit, Mike Walker and Jason Rogers each added singles to their early home runs...

Wisconsin Play-by-Play

Decent chance to go ahead in the 11th --

Wisconsin Top of the 11th

  • Pitcher Change: Tyler Powell replaces Danny Barnes.
  • Jason Rogers hit by pitch.
  • Gregory Hopkins out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Tyler Powell to first baseman K. C. Hobson. Jason Rogers to 2nd.
  • Joseph Paciorek grounds out, third baseman Bryson Namba to first baseman K. C. Hobson.
  • Chad Stang grounds out, second baseman Matt Nuzzo to first baseman K. Hobson.

Final: @Palm Beach 6, Brevard County 5, 10 innings

No, not a repeat of the prior post...

Brevard County Box Score

Well, we won't waste time re-hashing Rolando Pascual's struggles (see above), but we will note that RHP Mark Willinsky has now allowed 66 hits in 44.2 innings -- it's hardly a small sample of opponents hitting .346 against; from purely a team fun standpoint, the Manatees aren't "out of it" for the 2nd half standings, so it can't be a rockin' clubhouse when the 11th and 12 pitchers can't be trusted with a 5-0 8th inning lead; when you realize struggling RHP Roque Mercedes (idle today) is the 10th pitcher, well, let's just leave it at that; we don't have a pitch count for Tyler Thornburg, but six baserunners allowed in five scoreless innings is generally considered a positive day, right? LHP Jon Pokorny rebounded from Monday's struggle with two scoreless; SS Josh Prince (hitting 6th?) was the only Manatee not to reach base once; several did twice, and CF D'Vontrey Richardson doubled, singled, and walked; only one add-on run after knocking out Carlos Martinez...

Brevard County Play-by-Play

11 Sea Cows stranded, or is it beached? But the team was 3-for-11 with RISP, and there were no glaring failures in that regard. No near-rallies in the late innings at all for the Brevard boys, though...

Khris Davis has an OPS over 250 points higher than Kentrail... If Heckathorn doesn't make it that might be the worst 1st round in Brewer history. In 2009 if you had told us Kentrail would have a .700ish OPS in A ball no one would have believed you, except maybe X, I think he was quite hard on that pick initially.

Final: DSL Brewers 7, @DSL Athletics 3

17-year-old RHP Gian Rizzo and 16-year-old SS Orlando Arcia continue to steal the show. Rizzo went six innings, allowing just one run on seven hits and a walk while fanning five, and now has a precocious 43/8 K/BB in 42 professional innings. Arcia collected two hits for the sixth time in his last seven games, one of them a double, which pushed his line to a sterling .316/.403/.504, including 17 walks against just 11 strikeouts. Crazy kids. Two other crazy kids, Esthervin Matos and Elvis Rubio, were both absent from the lineup after not starting game two yesterday. Raul Mondesi is mentioned by official sources more than any other Cervecerito, one suspects mostly because of his name, since he's never hit much; nevertheless, he was the only player besides Arcia to reach more than once today, with a single and a walk.

Juan Francisco continues to pitch poorly, blowing the lead in the 7th today, but the D-Crew stormed right back:

DSL Athletics Bottom of the 7th
  • Pitcher Change: Juan Francisco replaces Gian Rizzo.
  • Gabriel Santana hit by pitch.
  • Jose Sayegh triples (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Dionis Hinojosa. Gabriel Santana scores.
  • Rodolfo Penalo out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Jose Pena. Jose Sayegh scores.
  • Jonesy Zarraga flies out to center fielder Dionis Hinojosa.
  • Vicmal De La Cruz grounds out, second baseman Francisco Castillo to first baseman Juan De Leon.

DSL Brewers Top of the 8th
  • Francisco Castillo strikes out swinging. Francisco Castillo advances to 1st, on throwing error by catcher Andy Paz.
  • With Dionis Hinojosa batting, Francisco Castillo steals (9) 2nd base.
  • With Dionis Hinojosa batting, wild pitch by Robin Rosario, Francisco Castillo to 3rd.
  • Dionis Hinojosa walks.
  • With Orlando Arcia batting, Dionis Hinojosa steals (19) 2nd base.
  • Orlando Arcia singles on a fly ball to left fielder Jose Sayegh. Francisco Castillo scores.
  • With Deivi Mejia batting, Dionis Hinojosa advances to 3rd on a balk. Orlando Arcia advances to 2nd on a balk.
  • Deivi Mejia singles on a fly ball to left fielder Jose Sayegh. Dionis Hinojosa scores. Orlando Arcia to 3rd.
  • Jose Pena pops out to second baseman Rodolfo Penalo.
  • Raul Mondesi singles on a fly ball to center fielder Jonesy Zarraga. Orlando Arcia scores. Deivi Mejia to 2nd.
  • Juan De Leon grounds into double play, shortstop Gabriel Santana to second baseman Rodolfo Penalo to first baseman Jose Rosario. Raul Mondesi out at 2nd.

Peralta with a very nice start for Huntsville. I am pretty sure he wanted to make a statement to the voters of the Power 50 before the next installment is done.

Final: Chattanooga 3, @Huntsville 1

As was pointed out just above, Wily Peralta twirled a phenomenal game, and could have even gone back out for the 8th. As it stood, though, it was in the 9th that the Stars really needed him; Santo Manzanillo pitched a perfect 8th, handing a tie game to Rob Wooten, who promptly untied it by giving up a two-out, two-run homer. Huntsville got two hits off the Lookouts' excellent closer Josh Lindblom, whom I wanted the Brewers to draft in 2008, but it was for naught. Hainley Statia, still just 25, had a fine night, cracking his first homer since 2009 to go with a single and a walk; he's now hitting .279 with decent patience, albeit no power. Zelous Wheeler also had two hits, and Logan Schafer was on twice with a single and a walk. Erik Komatsu had a bad game, 0-5 with two strikeouts.
The bottom of the 9th was promising but quickly snuffed out. Looks like Cool Breeze could work on his bunting:

Huntsville Bottom of the 9th
  • Pitcher Change: Josh Lindblom replaces Josh Wall, batting 1st, replacing left fielder Alfredo Silverio.
  • Steffan Wilson singles on a soft line drive to right fielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez.
  • Logan Schafer singles on a line drive to center fielder Brad Coon. Steffan Wilson to 2nd.
  • Erik Komatsu ground bunts into a force out, pitcher Josh Lindblom to third baseman Wilberto Ortiz. Steffan Wilson out at 3rd. Logan Schafer to 2nd. Erik Komatsu to 1st.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Lee Haydel replaces Robert Wooten.
  • Lee Haydel lines into double play, second baseman Elian Herrera to shortstop Ivan Ochoa. Logan Schafer doubled off 2nd.
