Final (game one): DSL Mariners 11, @DSL Brewers 7 (7 innings)

The 'Ritos just can't beat those damn Marineros. The D-Crew is 4-9 against them now, which accounts for the entirety of the D-M's division lead; the Cerveceritos are 23-7 against the rest of the league. Adding insult to injury, they lead 6-0 today after two innings only to blow it in spectacular fashion. In a good news/bad news situation, the good news is that young righty Milton Gomez made his first appearance in almost a month; the bad news is that he gave up four runs in two innings. Similar performances were turned in by Juan Francisco and Orlando Torrez; Torrez had only allowed two runs in seven games this year but allowed three in 1.2 innings today, albeit all unearned. Happily, Orlando Arcia continues to stroke it, tallying two more hits today, including a double. Esthervin Matos likewise keeps impressing, on base three of four times today with a single, walk, and HBP (and no errors today!). Elvis Rubio's slow climb back to respectability marches on with a single and yet another HBP--stay healthy, my friend. 18-year-old middle infielder Francisco Castillo racked up three hits, and elder statesmen Dionis Hinojosa and Deivi Mejia continue to produce with the lumber. There will be (was) a second game, but the box score has yet to be filled.

Gomez's day:

DSL Mariners Top of the 5th
  • Pitcher Change: Milton Gomez replaces Orlando Torrez.
  • Axel Wel doubles (7) on a fly ball to center fielder Yonki Hernandez.
  • With Estarlyn Morales batting, wild pitch by Milton Gomez, Axel Wel to 3rd.
  • Estarlyn Morales grounds out, shortstop Orlando Arcia to first baseman Deivi Mejia.
  • George Soto out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Dionis Hinojosa. Axel Wel scores.
  • Ismael Alcantara grounds out, third baseman Sthervin Matos to first baseman Deivi Mejia.

DSL Mariners Top of the 6th
  • Alexander Capriata hit by pitch.
  • Randy Perez out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Milton Gomez to first baseman Deivi Mejia. Alexander Capriata to 2nd.
  • Luis Matias singles on a fly ball to center fielder Yonki Hernandez. Alexander Capriata to 3rd.
  • Ketel Marte grounds into a force out, second baseman Francisco Castillo to shortstop Orlando Arcia. Alexander Capriata scores. Luis Matias out at 2nd. Ketel Marte to 1st.
  • With Janelfry Zorrilla batting, Ketel Marte steals (11) 2nd base.
  • Janelfry Zorrilla singles on a fly ball to center fielder Yonki Hernandez. Ketel Marte scores.
  • Axel Wel singles on a ground ball to first baseman Deivi Mejia. Janelfry Zorrilla scores. Axel Wel out at 2nd on the throw, first baseman Deivi Mejia to catcher Natanael Mejia to first baseman Deivi Mejia to second baseman Francisco Castillo.

Final: Brevard County 6, @Palm Beach 3

Very nice start by Nick Bucci: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 5 K, 8/4 GO/FO. As Toby pointed out, that's the third consecutive seven-inning start for the Baby-Faced Assassin, and fourth out of five. Jon Pokorny came on nominally in relief in the 8th and promptly allowed three runs without getting an out; fortunately BC had enough in their pocket to survive, having just plated runs four and five in the top half of the inning. Scooter Gennett paced the offense with three hits and a walk, and D'Vontrey Richardson was almost as good, tallying a double, single, walk, and stolen base (he's almost at 50% now). Kentrail Davis, Hunter Morris, and Scott Krieger joined D'Vo with two knocks.

Love these innings:

Palm Beach Bottom of the 4th
  • Niko Vasquez strikes out swinging.
  • Xavier Scruggs strikes out swinging.
  • Robert Stock strikes out swinging.

Final: Nashville 4, @Iowa 3

Michael Fiers struggled a lot more with walks than we're used to but in the end turned in good results despite all the baserunners: 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 2 HBP, 4 K, 1 HR, 9/4 GO/AO, 96 pitches, 57 strikes. Mike McClendon picked up the save with a perfect 9th featuring two punch-outs. Taylor Green, natch, paced the offense with two hits and a walk and drove in three runs. Eric Farris singled and walked twice, Mat Gamel had a hit and a walk, and Caleb Gindl contributed a double. Farris stole two bases, giving him 13 now, but was also picked off.

Fiers sprinkled a walk into seemingly most every inning, but he really battled his control here:

Iowa Bottom of the 4th
  • DJ LeMahieu hit by pitch.
  • Bryan LaHair pops out to third baseman Mat Gamel in foul territory.
  • Welington Castillo hit by pitch. DJ LeMahieu to 2nd.
  • Brad Snyder singles on a ground ball to right fielder Caleb Gindl. DJ LeMahieu to 3rd. Welington Castillo to 2nd.
  • Ryan Flaherty flies out to left fielder Jordan Brown.
  • Marwin Gonzalez walks. DJ LeMahieu scores. Welington Castillo to 3rd. Brad Snyder to 2nd.
  • Nicholas Struck grounds out softly, third baseman Mat Gamel to first baseman Erick Almonte.

I didn't include Ramirez in my top 10 list... because I have no idea what to make of him. Is he just that good that he can put the bat on the ball regardless of where it's pitched and doesn't need to walk ever? Is he just that selective that he's killing mistakes in every AB? Or is he going to have problems down the road because he's ultra aggressive? His BB rate is essentially 1 for 40 ABs... just 4-5 more walks and I put him in my top 10. As it stands, I have no idea how to qualify him.

Regardless of his future as a hitter, the power he's showing is fantastic to see.

Toledo threw a scoreless inning. Had some command problems, which Steve Wendt chalked up to nerves.
I didn't watch him in the college WS, what's the story with his velocity? Or didn't Steve say anything?

Rivera should never have been sent down from Wisconsin. Just imo.

EDIT: Also, Rivera's name was displayed as "Yadier Rivera" during the MLB broadcast tonight as they highlighted his cycle from yesterday. Not cool!

Cardinals Drop Third Straight to Manatees

Brevard County Knocks Out 13 Hits and Forces Four Double Plays in 6-3 Win

By Tyler Krochmal / Palm Beach Cardinals

JUPITER, Fla. - The Palm Beach Cardinals (13-13, 42-53) grounded into four double plays, committed three errors and were out-hit 13-6 in a 6-3 loss to the Brevard County Manatees (11-12, 38-55) in game three of a four-game series Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium.

The Cardinals have now lost three in a row for the first time since being swept in a four-game series by the Daytona Cubs May 18-21 and dropped to .500 in the second-half season.

Eric Fornataro (6-8, 3.95 ERA) matched a season high by allowing 10 hits in six innings but kept the damage minimal with just three earned runs, walking one and striking out four. The fourth-year righty continues to a pitcher of streaks, having now lost two straight after winning three in a row in late June.

Brevard County got on Fornataro for all three runs in the second inning, beginning with a leadoff bunt single from D'Vontrey Richardson and a one-out hit by pitch. Sean McCraw then drove home two with a double to deep center field and was followed by consecutive singles to load the bases with still one away. Kentrail Davis capped the scoring with an RBI-groundout to shortstop, leaving the 'Tees on top 3-0 early on.

Neither team managed much at the plate after the second until later on in the eighth, as Fornataro and Manatees starter Nick Bucci (6-8, 3.58 ERA) settled in to hold their opponents off the board before turning to the bullpen. Brevard County put runners on base in every inning against Fornataro and eventually every frame overall, finishing the contest with 13 men left on base.

Justin Smith came on in the seventh and fired a scoreless inning before running into trouble with two outs in the eighth. A walk and a single to Davis forced Keith Butler into action, but the right-hander issued another free pass and gave up a two-run single to Hunter Morris that put Brevard County on top 5-0.

Palm Beach put together its only rally of the night in the eighth and it could have been much more, coming away with just one run to end the frame after loading the bases with nobody out. Greg Garcia drove home two with a triple earlier in the inning but Xavier Scruggs grounded into a double play with the bags juiced, scoring one but dampening any potential threat and keeping the score at 5-3.

Brevard County picked up another insurance run in the ninth thanks in part to an error from Domnit Bolivar, finalizing the unfortunate 6-3 final. Bolivar and Starlin Rodriguez each contributed a pair of singles while Roque Mercedes picked up his second save of the season for the 'Tees.

Sounds Take Second Straight From I-Cubs, Win 4-3

Fiers Deals While Green Drives In Three Of Four Runs

Nashville Sounds

Des Moines, Iowa - The Nashville Sounds dropped the division-rival Iowa Cubs, 4-3, on Tuesday evening at Principal Park in the second game of a four-game set.

Nashville (45-52) has taken the first two games from the Cubs and has played in a PCL-high 43 one-run games this season, going 19-24 in those contests.

Outfielder Jordan Brown added two hits to extend his hitting streak to eight games, while second baseman Taylor Green drove in three of the four runs with his two hits.

Nashville starting pitcher Mike Fiers continued to dominate from the mound, moving to 3-0 in his first three Triple-A Starts. Fiers surrendered two runs on four hits with four strikeouts in seven innings of work. The 26-year old also walked five and hit two batters.

In his last 11 starts between Double-A Huntsville and Nashville, Fiers is 6-2 with a 2.01 ERA (14 ER / 62.2 IP), holding opponents to a .180 average over that stretch (40-for-222).

Nashville starting pitchers are posting a combined 2.83 ERA in the club's last nine games (15 ER / 47.2 IP). Sounds starters have struck out 39 batters while allowing only 35 hits in 47 2/3 innings over that stretch.

The Sounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Iowa starter Nicholas Struck, as the Cubs pitcher tossed 34 pitches in the opening frame. The Sounds worked three walks in the inning, which came back to haunt Struck when Green hit a two-out, bases loaded, two-run single to center field. Green improved his average to .833 (5-for-6) with 15 RBIs with the bases juiced this season.

Iowa scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth as Nashville starter Fiers experienced control issues. Fiers hit two batters and allowed a Brad Snyder single to load the bases, followed by a two-out walk to Marwin Gonzalez that scored D.J. LeMahieu.

Each club scored a run in the sixth inning. Green recorded his 54th RBI with a base hit to center field that scored Erick Almonte. Iowa catcher Welington Castillo then retaliated with a solo home run to left field, his 13th of the season.

The Sounds extended their lead to 4-2 in the next inning, as Caleb Gindl led off the frame with a double to center. Gindl moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Fiers, and scored when Brown lined a base hit to left field.

The Cubs came within one run in the eighth inning as reliever Zack Segovia offered up a solo home run to leadoff hitter Brian LaHair that made it 4-3. LaHair's homer was his PCL-leading 28th of the season.

Segovia allowed one run in one inning pitched. Mike McClendon converted his second save of the season while fanning two in a scoreless ninth.

Struck (0-3) took the tough luck loss to remain winless, allowing three runs in six innings in a quality start.

The Sounds and Cubs continue their four-game series at 7:05 PM CT on Wednesday night at Principal Park. Right-hander Josh Butler (5-5, 4.80) mans the bump for Nashville against Iowa righty Jay Jackson (5-8, 5.89).

Nashville Box Score

Eric Farris (single, two walks, 2-for-3 on the basepaths) again at shortstop, certainly more frequently as of late; Taylor Green has been just so darn impressive; the Nashville write-up a bit too cheerful calling Mike Fiers' effort "dominant", not with the five free passes and two HBP's -- but given that, 96 pitches through seven innings says something about his pitchability...
