Will We Have Sheets in 2009?

I bet he feels a little bad about his various stints on the DL.
Sheets has gone on record more than once affirming that he believes a contract is just as much about what you have done, as opposed to what you 'will' do, fwiw...

i wonder if the signing of the young infield is less of an issue as we think it is, at least as far as paying to resign a guy like Sheets.

if you count four young players, one is bound to leave in FA (cough*Fielder/Boras*cough), one may not meet his promise, and resigning two good players isn't going to be crushing for a team with an ok-sized payroll, especially if we profit from a few playoff appearances. plus that devalues the present few years in order to wait on the promise of the future, and we've passed that point.

Sheets has some injury history of course, but we know exactly what we've got in Sheets--some time off for injury and otherwise dominating. and i think there's a lot of benefit to that vs. some other guys on the market. You've got the Oswalts who are great but slowly declining, the Zambranos who are total crapshoots or Schmidt who is sitting out a year. Sheets has never done that to us, and i think that's something worth paying for.

When you are looking are resigning any player, you have to look at the injuries they have had and decide if the injurie are likely to reoccur, affect the quality of pitching/play in the future and if the injury/overcompensation will cause other injuries.

So if Sheets is healthy at the time they resign him they need to decide if his previous injuries will linger in the future or if he is ready to continue as an ACE.

There is another thread around here discussing whether or not the Suppan signing was worth it. As I said there, I thought the Suppan signing was fine, but we'll have to see what we lose down the road because we spent the money on Suppan. If that signing keeps us from re-signing Sheets, then I'd be very disappointed.

A lot of responses are addressing a question that was not raised by the thread--SHOULD the Brewers try to resign Sheets. The answer to that is obvious--of course they should. But the question is "will they...?" The open market for pitchers of Sheets's caliber will be astounding, unless the market is saturated in 09 (which I'll admit I haven't looked ahead to see). Assuming the Brewers payroll leaps to $80 million--and that's a fairly wild assumption--can the Crew afford to commit over 20% (assuming $16+ million per) to one pitcher? I'm sorry but I just don't see it. If this were a Twins board and the question raised was "Will the Twins resign Santana," the answer would also be, sadly, no. Teams like the Twins and Brewers can not afford to commit long-term deals in this day and age.
