40 year old coach marries 16 year old student

I really have to question the parents for consenting to this. 16 years old should be enjoying high school not be married. This guy is also one sicko. too weird of a story. 16 year olds don't know what they want, and i think the parents should of held firm instead of signing to appease the daughter.

Nice job by ABC of finding the creepiest picture possible of the two. The look in that man's eyes alone makes me want this to get annulled, and I'd imagine the public outcry may bring this to a head.

Man, this guy is set for life. He'll be 55 and she'll still have the body of a 20-year-old.

I really don't understand the parents' position that she's a smart, athletic, special kid but now she's "thrown it all away" by marrying this guy. Not that I'd be in favor of the arrangement if I were in their shoes, but it's like they're assuming she's now going to get instantly pregos, drop out of school, and enter into some sordid life of crime that this track coach subscribes to.

First of all, wow. How unprofessional of the coach. And "I guess we had to"??? What a cop out from the parents. She's 16! 16 year olds don't talk to their parents anyway. My sister is 16! I don't really know what I'd do if I found out she was texting the cross country coach at 2 in the morning....

If that were my kid I would hope I would have the cahones to say, 'no freaking way. go to the mall and you can do whatever you want when you're 18.'

I hate to judge, but isn't that what we're supposed to do? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

My initial instinct was that this is some type of shotgun wedding.

Wow, those are two horrible parents. I can't believe they signed the form.

That said, why are they talking about her daughter as if she died from a drug overdose? 'She could've done anything...but she threw it all away". Tremendous!

I don't care about the age difference at all, but

1. Why would any 40 year-old get involved with a 16 year-old...what's the harm in waiting until she's 18?

2. I seem to recall 18 & 19 year-olds getting very weak sexual assault charges against them, for having consensual sex with a 15 year-old...usually plea bargained down to "conduct detrimental to a child". The you see this and just shake your head.

"School officials can't be responsible for what happens the other hours of the day, and I would think the relationship developed much more outside of school," said Brian Shaw, an attorney for the school district.

I don't think that's true. I would think a school district would have at least some responsibility for any teacher's conduct as long as the teacher is employed by that district. The statement was made by the district's attorney, so what should you expect? But I would think there would be some very pointed and legitimate questions raised at the next school board meeting.

But enough about the district.

The real creep in this story is the coach, of course.

He's a complete predator, and is worthy of any and all criticism.

I totally agree.

That's like saying the Tennesse Titans shouldn't be punished for the actions of Adam Jones. The guy is still an employee of the school and his actions represent and reflect upon the disctrict. Don't normal teenage girls, when their track coach starts to come onto them, freak out at the creepy old man making a pass at them? Maybe these two are just made for each other. It sounds like the parents are wondering where their little Windy was blown astray.

I thought this thread was going to about former MLB player Mel Hall.

All I have to say about this relationship is that, when my sister ran track in high school, if she had come home talking about how she was going to marry her coach who was 25 years older than her, my brother, my dad, and I all would have been going to jail after we got through with him. Taking advantage of young girls in that position is just sick, imo.

I'll be honest with you, I was expecting an older woman and a teenage boy. Anyone else?

Actually, I was expecting Kentucky. North Carolina is close enough. (cue Deliverance banjo music)

The girl's name is Windy. Not Wendy, but Windy. That's a name for a horse, not a girl.

i can agree with this to a point. If I go out on a Saturday night, get wasted and make an ass out of myself, get arrested, etc. there isn't much the school can do.

i dont know what i think about this case. yes it is a student and a teacher/coach, but can the school really control what a person does in their own home?

On another note, how will the teacher be able to go back to work?

I'm sure his peers(the other teachers) frown heavily upon this. It's going to be pretty awkward at the water cooler.

"So what did you do this weekend?"

"Well I went to the school dance on Saturday."

"Oh, chaperone?"

"No, I was there with my 16 year old fiance"

So what if he doesn't have a job. Haven't the Beatles taught us anything?

Granted, this isn't a parent, but isn't this what happens when kids keep asking their parents (usually mom) to prom? This is just the next logical (well, illogical) step.

It sure sounds like the parents weren't getting a lot of help from the school district or the police. This creep should have been fired months ago right before he got hauled off to jail.

If this were in Wisconsin, the guy would be prosecuted as a sex offender.

The age of consent is 18 in Wisconsin, 16 in NC. Still you'd think there'd be something additional about a teacher/student relationship along the lines of psychiatrist/patient regardless of age.
