SS Upgrade: Realistically What Do You Expect?

Lately I get the feeling the only move at SS Doug might make is for someone who plays better D. Since June 1st Yuni has been hitting at .285. Thats almost 2 months at a .285 clip. His AVG for the year is up to .250.

To answer the thread's question, I expect Doug will do nothing at short .... but I do think something will happen at 3rd.

Which is why I think Barmes is the best option. Would be better if he were a lefty, but he has a great glove.

I can't say I'm excited about Carroll. He can't play every day at his age, and his defense is poor at short. Plus he's been bad offensively the last month.

Get someone who plays solid d even if his bat sucks, plug him in the eighth spot, and let the defense improve.

Carroll can't play everyday, but he can play 4-5 days a week which he's been doing, and doing very effectively.

He's also a guy who can play short, third and 2nd. He's almost a perfect fit with this team. Perfect bat off the bench for a late game situation where you just need the ball in play, an upgrade over both McGehee and Betancourt, defensively and offensively, and he would slide into Counsell's role next year absolutely perfectly.

As for his recent struggles, that is the very definition of small sample sizes. Look at his entire career. He's a very solid hitter.

Since the break, Yuni's posted a 1.175 OPS, raising his season mark by 45 points. He's a strong contender for NL player of the week, yet the bashing in relentless.

Objectivity is thrown out the window when it comes to this guy.

I give credit to Betancourt for having a great few games. Maybe he actually has changed his stance somewhat like Bill Schroeder has said. I'm not totally sure, but he deserves credit. Now, can we expect him to keep hitting like this (or even close)? I tend to doubt it.

Now McGehee and Yuni are starting to hit. LOL. What are we going to do LOL
McGehee really isn't. Over the last 28 days his OPS is still a pathetic .527. Over the least 7 days it's .624, which is still terrible. His batting average has been getting slightly better, but he is showing no power and his OBP is still weak. Coupling that with his sub-standard defense makes him very replaceable if Melvin can find a better option via trade.

I can't tell, should this be in blue?

The guy has been objectively awful the last several years, and he's been terrible this year save for a few games.

Really, the "break" is 7 games now. Should 7 games hitting the ball and still playing pathetic defense ease our desire to get a upgrade at short, or look at what he's done the entire season? Not to mention, .270 OBP.

In the last 28 days (22 games) Betancourt is batting .315 with a .777 OPS ...unfortunately he is still terrible at taking walks, as his OBP is only 10 points higher than his BA

Do I think he's "turned the corner"? No . Do I think he should still be replaced? Yes, please. Just pointing out its been more than 7 days. In the last 7 days he's hitting .474 with a 1.342 OPS... even in the last 14 days he's hitting .367 with a 1.020 OPS !

However, you can't just tack on [x] days prior to a 7 game hot streak and say he's been hitting well for a month because his cumulative stats (including that hot streak) during that time period still looks good. Take the last 7 games out of that 28 day period you quoted and he was hitting .275/.278/.333/.611 with no homeruns in a 15 games stretch. Your 14 day stats just tack on 2 games prior to this streak where he went 2 for 8. Even HiandTight's 7 game "hot streak" time period is being generous, as Yuni was only 1 for 6 (no walks, no extra base hits) in the first 3 games of that stretch. So really it's been 4 games, starting with that 2 homerun game that's skewing everything.

After the White Sox's lose 6 out of 8 to the Indians, Tigers and Red Sox's they will be willing to give us Omar Vazquez for almost nothing. I will take the 44 year old, 10 time gold glover as a defensive upgrade for late innings. He can switch hit and will do the right thing when asked to pinch hit. It never hurts to have a quality veteran to step up in critical situations.

Cozart is on the ground injured right now. Something with his left arm. It doesn't look good. I'm not a doctor and I'm terrible at determining how bad these injuries are, but this could be a broken wrist. He's leaving the game now with his wrist wrapped.

Omar Vizquel?

Desmond makes sense given we will need a SS the next several years. That is, if you buy that he'll hit for you. I know Doug is probably only thinking about this year, but Desmond can be had in a buy-low rate right now at a position of supreme need and importance. It would be extremely wise to put an offer in to the Nats for him.

Vizquel, Carroll, Desmond- none of these guys are clear upgrades over Yuni. The only possibilities that I see out there are Barmes or Furcal.

So you are alright with mentioning that Carroll's been struggling as of late, but what of Furcal's entire season?

Despite his crappy year to this point, Furcal has more HR and RBI than Carroll in less than 40% of the PA. Furcal also has some upside as he had an all star season last year. Carroll on the other hand is old, has never played SS full time in a season and has homered less in the past 5 years than Yuni has to this point in the season.
