SS Upgrade: Realistically What Do You Expect?

Have to agree with end here. The Dodgers already have Yuniesky Betancourt on their roster. His name is Juan Uribe and he is gettin $21MM from 2011-2013. YUCK!

What would a Furcal or Carroll deal likely look like though? I don't believe the Dodger have any young 2B coming up, nor do they have a ready LF to place next to Kemp and Ethier. Jerry Sands looks like he could take over 1B for Loney and Juan Rivera isn't the answer. I wonder if they would take a 2B, OF and a mediocre pitching prospect for Furcal and Carroll?

Dodgers have Trayvon Robinson in Triple-A. He's hitting .304 with 25 home runs and eight steals, and he swiped 38 bags last season at Double-A. Power-speed combo, 23 years old. Their OF is pretty set.

I just can't see the team DFAing Yuni B at this point no matter how awful he is. It would seem to me that if we acquire a SS/3B option then either Wilson or Counsell will go and I hope DM has the good sense to make the right, and only, decision between those two.

Any decent SS that we could get for Corey Hart? I'd love to trade him and stick Gindl in right. It'd balance the lineup (another lefty) and upgrade the defense
I'm not at all convinced that Gindl can just come in and hit MLB pitching. He's only 22 and his OPS in AAA, while good at .828, does not scream "call me up" in the middle of a playoff race....I do like his career MiLB OBP of .373

Carroll is the perfect target. Leads the league in P/PA for SS, which is what the lineup desperately needs. Plus he must cost less in prospect(s) than Furcal.

I doubt it. I suspect Carroll is going to require a better haul prospect wise.

Still not a very big one, and one well-well within our ability to offer, but Furcal has the bigger salary and has far bigger question marks surrounding his ability to help out down the stretch.

Carroll is about as sure a bet as you can get at this point. He should come in, play solid D, hit .270-.290/.360-375.

I don't know what more we could ask for.

Erik Komtasu+Amaury Rivas for Furcal and Carroll with us assuming all of Furcal's remaining salary.

What can he do that Wilson cannot?
Hit major league pitching.

Carroll's .277 career BA, .356 career OBP is much better than what Josh Wilson can produce. Wilson has a career .281 OBP in MLB. That is horrid

Right- but he's closer to 40 than 30. I would expect his numbers to be below his career norms. He has no power whatsoever either. Seems like giving up something of value for him as a utility guy (You guys don't seriously want Carroll starting at short, do you?) would be a waste as Wilson is younger, and to this point has outperformed his career stats by a lot.

If they are going to get an old guy from the Dodgers, it had better be Furcal. He's better in the field, and there's a decent chance he could recapture something at the plate.

Absolutely I want him starting at SS without any shadow of a doubt.

And you can expect his numbers to be below his career norms, but they're not. The last two years he's been incredibly consistent.

Over his last two years;

.291/.370/717

I also can't possibly bring myself to compare Josh Wilson to Carroll, or get down on the prospect of adding Carroll because of the prospect we might lose Josh Wilson. Wilson is just not a good player. Carroll is a very solid defender, can play 3rd,2nd and Short and gets on base.

It only makes sense to bring him back next year as a utility guy. So at this point, what does Wilson offer us that Carroll doesn't?

Haudricourt threw out Clint Barmes as a guy Melvin has interest in. I kind of like that idea. He wouldn't be a huge difference maker, but he's solid defensively, and decent with the bat.

Barmes is a FA after this year, and even if not traded for this year, is surely a guy Melvin would be looking at in FA.

Stephen Drew's broken ankle adds another potential shopper for SS, and could raise the price on guys like Carroll and Barmes.

I getting the feeling that DM is going to stay put at SS and 3rd.
I'm praying you're wrong. I'd be ok if we made a move at 3B for a platoon type (Ian Stewart) for the rest of 2011 and opening the position for compeitition in 2012. What I am not ok with is Betancourt being the starting SS for the rest of 2011. I would be absolutely dumbfounded if DM believes we are better off at SS with Betancourt than Jamey Carroll, Rafael Furcal, Clint Barmes, Brendan Ryan, Jason Bartlett...etc.

We can't get Carroll now, we already have Brett Carroll. That would be too confusing. Although we did have the 2 Moutons...
This is Jack Burton in the Pork Chop Express, and I'm talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there.

It does feel like if we make a move it will be more for a bench guy, not someone to play regularily at 3b/ss. Maybe Casey and Yuni prove that to be a wise move, I'm having serious doubts though. Casey has actually looked somewhat competent at the plate the last couple games. Actually hit a few balls hard, which he hadn't done consistently since April. Yuni too....so maybe. Still wish we had another option though.

Saw a report from Rosenthal today saying that the D'Backs will fill SS in house, and not through trade.

The DBacks might realize they are pretty close to a being out of the playoff hunt (currently 4.5% but consistenly below 10%)

I can't say I'm excited about Carroll. He can't play every day at his age, and his defense is poor at short. Plus he's been bad offensively the last month.

Get someone who plays solid d even if his bat sucks, plug him in the eighth spot, and let the defense improve.

How many Errors has Carroll made this season.
3, but that's an outdated an ineffective way to measure defense.

His UZR/150 is -7, which is quite bad, but that's phenomenally better than Yuni's epically pathetic -19.5.

I expect we'll get a Josh Wilson-esque pickup - somebody like Carroll who has some OK numbers, but isn't really a significant upgrade offensively or defensively over Wilson, who himself isn't a significant upgrade offensively or defensively over YuniB.
