Final: @Jupiter 2, Brevard County 1

Holy cow, that doesn't happen often, but the Manatees snuck in an early matinee on us today, and then on top of that, the game was played in a super-tidy one hour, 53 minutes, escaping the Link Report preview. Unfortunately, the Sea Cows fell.

Brevard County Box Score

Starter Nick Bucci's line -- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 5-to-9 GB/FB; second baseman Scooter Gennett's 17th (ouch) error led to the game-tying run off Bucci in the 3rd; the 6th inning Jupiter run was barely earned -- ground ball single, SB, infield RBI base hit. Manatees outhit the Hammerheads 7-5. The Davis boys (Ke. and Kh.) combined to go 0-for-8 with 3 K's. Shawn Zarraga was back behind the plate (nice) and was 2-for-4, but ended the game with a GIDP.

Brevard County Play-by-Play

Brevard had baserunners on in seven of the nine innings, so it's a frustrating read -- no super-glaring wasted opportunities, however...

If Davis ever gets promoted I'd like to see Mittlestaedt bumped up, there's really no point in him spending more time in WI.

Final: DSL Brewers 6, @DSL Athletics 5

Happy Gian Rizzo day! The 17-year-old righty went five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk while fanning four. The runs came on a two-run homer in the 4th. Happy Orlando Arcia day as well; after laying low recently, No G busted out again today with a triple, double, and a walk in five trips. Esthervin Matos, who's impressed in the very early stages of his career, also doubled and walked. Fanning the fragilest and faintest of hot streaks, Elvis Rubio was 1-3 with a walk; next stop, a .200 batting average! Raul Mondesi earned a sombrero de oro, 0-5 with four punch-outs. The Cerveceritos stole six bases without being caught. Arcia committed his 5th error afield.

A three-run 8th by the Atleticitos tied the game, but only momentarily, courtesy of the two of the youngest Brewers:

DSL Athletics Bottom of the 8th
  • Alfredo Sosa walks.
  • Shawn Duinkerk grounds into a force out, second baseman Alejandro Mendoza to shortstop Orlando Arcia. Alfredo Sosa out at 2nd. Shawn Duinkerk advances to 2nd, on throwing error by shortstop Orlando Arcia.
  • With Luis Osorio batting, wild pitch by Juan Francisco, Shawn Duinkerk to 3rd.
  • Luis Osorio triples (2) on a fly ball to center fielder Yonki Hernandez. Shawn Duinkerk scores.
  • Vicmal De La Cruz pops out to third baseman Sthervin Matos.
  • Jose Rosario doubles (5) on a fly ball to center fielder Yonki Hernandez. Luis Osorio scores.
  • Pitcher Change: Carlos Sosa replaces Juan Francisco.
  • Renato Nunez singles on a fly ball to center fielder Yonki Hernandez. Jose Rosario scores.
  • Jonesy Zarraga flies out to center fielder Yonki Hernandez.

DSL Brewers Top of the 9th
  • Alejandro Mendoza strikes out swinging, catcher Dionisio Ramirez to first baseman Jose Rosario.
  • Yonki Hernandez pops out to first baseman Jose Rosario.
  • Orlando Arcia doubles (7) on a fly ball to center fielder Alfredo Sosa.
  • Sthervin Matos doubles (3) on a fly ball to center fielder Alfredo Sosa. Orlando Arcia scores.
  • Raul Mondesi strikes out swinging.

Final (game one): @Nashville 5, Albuquerque 0 (7 innings)

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds blanked the Albuquerque Isotopes, 5-0, in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium.
It was the second shutout of the season for Nashville. The Sounds shut out the Round Rock Express, 1-0, with a combination shut out on June 16 at Greer Stadium.

Mat Gamel, Eric Farris, Brett Carroll, and Caleb Gindl each collected two hits in the victory.

Nashville plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 3-0 advantage. Brandon Boggs opened the frame getting hit on the first pitch by Albuquerque starter Joe Newby and advanced to third as Carroll singled to left field. After reliever David Pfeiffer came into the contest, Taylor Green looped an RBI base hit to left field [audio] followed by a Gamel two-run single to left.

Nashville score its last two runs in the next inning to extend the lead to 5-0. Gindl and Edwin Maysonet singled to start the frame and both scored when Farris lined two-out, two-run double to left center.

Nashville starter Frankie De La Cruz pitched four scoreless innings, allowing two hits while fanning five. Mike McClendon (3-1) struck out one in two scoreless innings for the win. Tim Dillard finished the game with a scoreless frame.

In his second start of the season for Albuquerque, Joe Newby (1-3) took the loss after surrendering two runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Farris, Green, and Gindl each walked (Gindl's intentional). De la Cruz threw just 74 pitches (43 strikes)--happenstance, injury, or promotion?

FDLC wasn't exactly cuffed around in his last inning:

Albuquerque Top of the 4th
  • Jerry Sands flies out to right fielder Caleb Gindl.
  • Trayvon Robinson singles on a ground ball to right fielder Caleb Gindl.
  • Russell Mitchell called out on strikes.
  • Jamie Hoffmann called out on strikes.

  • Adrian Martinez lines out to shortstop Yadiel Rivera.
  • Daniel Mateo strikes out swinging.

He was lifted for a pinch hitter when the Sounds loaded the bases w/two outs in the bottom of the 4th. The score was 0-0, so I guess they thought they needed the chance at runs.
That makes sense. Well, a Don Money sort of sense.

Jalen Harris (and Yefri Saba) did not have a very good 2nd inning down in the desert:

AZL Rangers Bottom of the 2nd
  • Jordan Akins reaches on throwing error by third baseman Jalen Harris. Jordan Akins to 2nd.
  • Christopher Grayson grounds out, second baseman Brandon Macias to first baseman Hitaniel Arias. Jordan Akins to 3rd.
  • Ryan Rua doubles (4) on a fly ball to left fielder Matthew Franco. Jordan Akins scores.
  • Jeremy Williams reaches on fielding error by third baseman Jalen Harris. Ryan Rua scores.
  • Nick Urbanus singles on a fly ball to right fielder Jose R. Garcia. Jeremy Williams to 3rd. Nick Urbanus to 2nd on the throw.
  • Luis Sardinas singles on a ground ball to second baseman Brandon Macias. Jeremy Williams scores. Nick Urbanus to 3rd.
  • Kevin Torres out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Jose R. Garcia. Nick Urbanus scores.
  • With Matt Leeds batting, Luis Sardinas steals (2) 2nd base.
  • Matt Leeds strikes out swinging.

I move that whenever Arcia is mentioned multimedia should accompany his name such

.

I blame Mass, I'm unable to get past blaring trumpets. In fact, if he ever gets to Milwaukee trumpets blaring better be his walk-up music.

Final: @Wisconsin 2, West Michigan 1

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Wisconsin Timber Rattlers pitcher Maverick Lasker and Adrian Rosario combined to hold the West Michigan Whitecaps to three hits and they got just enough offensive support for a 2-1 win Thursday night at Time Warner Cable Field. The Rattlers pushed a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit. Wisconsin snapped a five game losing streak with the victory.

Lasker hit a bump in the road in the third inning. There was a runner at first with two outs when he walked Hernan Perez. Then, Rob Brantly reached on an error to load the bases. Clay Jones, who hit a grand slam in Wednesday's game, drew a four pitch walk from Lasker to force in the first run of Thursday's game.

But, that was it for the Whitecaps (43-46 overall, 11-9 second half).

The Rattlers (47-43, 9-11) were getting base runners, but could not dent the plate in the first five innings against Whitecaps starter Kyle Ryan. That changed in the sixth.

Reggie Keen started the rally with a one out single. TJ Mittelstaedt, who had three hits in the game, singled to right and sent Keen to third with the tying run. Mike Walker drove in Keen with a single to center and the Rattlers tied the game 1-1.

One out later, Cody Hawn stepped up with runners at second and third. The Rattlers first baseman had singled earlier in the game to extend his current hitting streak to 14 games. He added to his hit total with an infield single that sent Mittelstaedt across the pay station for a 2-1 Rattlers lead.

Lasker would toss a scoreless seventh inning before turning the game over to Rosario. After the walk to Jones in the third inning, Lasker retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced.

It would not be an easy eighth inning for Rosario. He allowed a hit and a walk to the first two batters he faced. A sacrifice bunt moved the tying and lead run into scoring position with two outs. But, Rosario struck out Jones for the second out and got a grounder from James Robbins to end the frame with the Rattlers still up 2-1.

The ninth would be a routine 1-2-3 inning for Rosario to nail down the win and for his first save of the season.

Wisconsin and West Michigan wrap up their series on Friday night. Jimmy Nelson (4-7, 4.58) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. The Whitecaps have Alex Burgos (4-1, 2.15) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 7:05pm.

Come out and celebrate the birthday of Timber Rattlers mascot Fang on Friday night. Area mascots will be at the ballpark to participate in a kickball game before the Timber Rattlers game. Since it is also a North Shore Bank Family Night, children 12 and under eat free. After the game, enjoy a fireworks display! After the fireworks, Fazoli's invites children 14 and under to participate in Kids Run the Bases.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show starting at 6:45pm.

Very nice effort from Lasker, who struck out five, walked three, and allowed two hits. Mittelstaedt continues to do his best Khris Davis impression, and also stole his 16th base.
I guess Dusty Rhodes wasn't a fan of the Whitecaps' starter's pickoff move:

Wisconsin Bottom of the 3rd
  • Chad Stang reaches on fielding error by shortstop Dixon Machado.
  • Tony Pechek flies out to center fielder Luis Castillo.
  • With Mike Brownstein batting, Kyle Ryan picks off Chad Stang at 1st on throw to James Robbins.
  • Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Batting Coach Dusty Rhodes ejected by 1B umpire Chris Tipton.
  • Mike Brownstein singles on a fly ball to right fielder Steven Moya.
  • Reggie Keen bunt grounds out, third baseman Josh Ashenbrenner to first baseman James Robbins.

Final: Huntsville 6, @Montgomery 3

No word on how hard he was throwing tonight, but Wily Peralta continues to do the two things that have put him at the top of our prospect list: strike people out at a good clip while keeping the ball on the ground. His line: 6.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 5 K, 1 HR, 10/2 GO/FO, 101 pitches, 66 strikes. Sean Halton had a huge night, reaching four of five times up, including his sixth homer and his 17th walk. Steffan Wilson joined him with three hits, and Zelous Wheeler, Brock Kjeldgaard, and Hainley Statia each had two--that's Big Brock's first multi-hit game since his first overall game with the Stars, two weeks ago. Erik Komatsu doubled and walked, and Martin Maldonado was also on twice with a hit and a HBP. Rob Wooten picked up the save with two punch-outs in 1.1 innings.

Peralta was removed because of pitch count, because he wasn't in any particular trouble:

Montgomery Bottom of the 7th
Cole Figueroa hit by pitch.
John Matulia grounds out, pitcher Wily Peralta to first baseman Sean Halton. Cole Figueroa to 2nd.
Pitcher Change: Lucas Luetge replaces Wily Peralta.
Kyeong Kang grounds out, third baseman Steffan Wilson to first baseman Sean Halton. Cole Figueroa to 3rd.
Matthew Sweeney strikes out swinging.

Final, Game Two: @Nashville 4, Albuquerque 2

Sounds Sweep Isotopes In Doubleheader

Nashville Wins, 4-2, In Twinbill Nightcap

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds posted a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Albuquerque Isotopes on Thursday night at Greer Stadium. The Sounds blanked the Isotopes, 5-0, in the opener and defeated Albuquerque, 4-2, in the twinbill nightcap.

With two victories on the evening, Nashville (43-49) moved to 6-4 in doubleheader play this season, while the sweep was Nashville's first of this season and first since the Sounds took two from the Oklahoma City RedHawks on September 2, 2010.

Mat Gamel had two hits in both games to extend his hitting streak to a season-best 10 games, the longest active streak on the club.

Jordan Brown belted two solo homers in the victory for the third time in his career. It was also the 11th two-homer game by a Sounds player this season.

In his second Triple-A start and fourth appearance for the Sounds, Mike Fiers (2-0) struck out eight batters for a quality start. The 25-year-old allowed two runs on four hits in six innings of work for the victory.

The Sounds plated a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. Caleb Gindl walked, stole second base, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored as Taylor Green lined a single to centerfield.

Brown hammered a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall in the second inning off Isotopes starter Tim Sexton (audio). The homer was Brown's third of the season and first since June 18 at Memphis.

Albuquerque scored its first run of the evening in the top of the fourth inning on a solo home run from Ivan De Jesus Jr., his second of the season.

The Sounds recorded back-to-back-jacks off Sexton to begin the next frame and widen their lead to 4-1. Brown unloaded his second home run to right field to begin the inning and was followed by Andy Gonzalez's first homer in a Sounds uniform. It marked the fourth time this season that Nashville hit back-to-back home runs this season.

Fiers ran into trouble in the top of the fifth inning, getting the first two outs before walking Justin Sellers. Pinch hitter Jay Gibbons moved Sellers to third with a single on the ensuing play, followed by an RBI single by Dee Gordon.

Donovan Hand fanned two over a scoreless inning to end the game.

Sexton (3-3) gave up four runs on seven hits with three homers in four innings.

The Sounds and Isotopes continue their five-game series at 7:05 PM CT on Friday night at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Josh Butler (5-5, 5.11) takes the mound against left-hander Randy Keisler (5-4, 3.62).

Nashville Game Two Box Score

Caleb Gindl was ejected by the home plate umpire after fanning in the 3rd; Gindl started in CF and Eric Farris at SS in this one; where were these hits in Milwaukee, Mat Gamel? 92 pitches, 60 for strikes, in Mike Fiers' quality start...

Lasker helps Rattlers pull out of skid by beating Whitecaps

by Jim Oskola, Appleton Post-Crescent

GRAND CHUTE — Wisconsin's 2-1 win over West Michigan in a Midwest League game at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium was much needed for the Timber Rattlers and starting pitcher Maverick Lasker.

For the Timber Rattlers, it ended a five-game losing streak. For Lasker, it may have been the turning point in what has been a disappointing season.

"It felt good, especially after the season I've been having," Lasker said. "It felt good to have a really good outing."

Since being sent back to Wisconsin from Class A Brevard County, Lasker had given up 14 runs in 15 2/3 innings. Against the Whitecaps, Lasker went seven innings, allowing two hits, three walks and an unearned run.

"I was just throwing every pitch for strikes," Lasker said. "I could throw changeups on fastball counts and keep hitters off balance."

The only inning in which he struggled was the third, when a single, a walk, an error and another walk pushed a run across the plate for West Michigan.

"We gave him a quick breather," Rattlers catcher Tony Pechek said of a third-inning visit to the mound by pitching coach Chris Hook and himself. "He was out there for a little bit of time. We told him to believe in his stuff, work the ball down in the zone and he'll be right out of the inning."

Lasker was economical with his pitches, needing only 76 to go seven innings. He threw 20 in the third.

"Maverick had his stuff tonight," Pechek said. "What I put down, he threw and it was down in the zone. He made these guys look pretty foolish at times."

The Rattlers scored their runs in the sixth inning.

After Reggie Keen and T.J. Mittelstaedt hit back-to-back, one-out singles, Mike Walker singled to center to score Keen. One out later, Cody Hawn beat out an infield single, with Mittelstaedt scoring the winning run.

"It's a relief, first and foremost," said Pechek about ending the losing streak. "We all hate losing. It comes from top down. If you don't like winning, you probably shouldn't be in this game. Losing really grinds at us. We kept our preparation the same, knowing it would turn around soon for us."
