Buyouts are making me nervous

Anyone else a bit worried that out '12 payroll will be around 80m and almost 10% of it will be spent buying out Yuni B (3mish) and K Rod (3.5ish)????

We could just keep Yuni next year and not worry about the buyout I suppose. (blue)

80MM? According to the BF.net salary page, looks more like $57MM after you subtract Yuni's $6MM team option. I realize that $57MM won't fill the 25 man roster, so more payroll will be added but where is the $80MM coming from?

I think he meant that the budget will presumably be around $80 million.

I'd be more worried if our payroll was slashed to 80 million next year after once again going over 90 this year, and the prospect of an 8 figure bump in revenue with a new TV deal.

I think Mark A would be open to pushing it up over $90MM, but not just for the sake of doing it. I think they will look at it in terms of the next 3-5 years, not just 2012. For example, they could try to lock in Marcum and/or Greinke early. Then it just depends when and how they spread out that money.

They don't really have a need to spend a ton of money next year otherwise. The rotation is bascially set, and so are most of the starting position players. (Assuming some combination of Gamel/McGehee/Green at the corners.) They could spend a ton on SS I suppose, but I don't know who's out there.

IF they wanted to, seems like they have room for another big contract if they want to go that route.

Player Salary
Zack Greinke $13,500,000
Randy Wolf $9,500,000
Corey Hart $9,000,000
Rickie Weeks $10,000,000
Ryan Braun $6,000,000
Yovani Gallardo $5,500,000
Total $53,500,000

That gives us about $35 million to sign or replace these guys, and I'll make an estimate of what they will cost:

Player Est. Cost
John Axford $5,000,000
Shaun Marcum* $9,000,000
Chris Narveson $3,000,000
Nyjer Morgan* $3,000,000
Carlos Gomez* $2,000,000
Jonathon Lucroy $5,000,000
Total $27,000,000

*arbitration eligable

So that would put us at roughly $80M with this to fill: 5 non-closer bullpen arms, 1B, 3B, SS, 5 bench spots.

The big assumptions here though are Axford, Lucroy, and Narveson because they all are UFAs, not arbitration eligable as far as I can tell, made less than $500,000 this year, and outperformed it by a lot. If they make those projections, we pretty much have to fill the bullpen, bench, SS, and 3B without spending more than $2M per player. If they make just double what they did in 2011, then we would probably spend $5-8M on a SS.

Lucroy at 5M? You're about 4.5M off....

Well assuming he is a UFA and not arby eligible good luck negotiating a league minimum contract with him

Whoa Nelly!

Axford, Lucroy and Narveson are all on their rookie contracts. They will cost about 1,300,000 combined.

Morgan will get a raise, but it will be closer to 1 million than 3 million. Gomez might very well be gone since that is a significant chuck to spend on a platoon/defensive specialist.

Check out the Brewerfan Salary page. It is a great resource.

Are you talking about next year's deals?

Because Axford, Narveson, and Lucroy are all 0-3 players. We can pretty much dictate how much they make, and it will be in the ballpark of $500,000.

You're probably in the ballpark with Gomez and Morgan (thought $3M would be a lot for a first year arby guy), and I can't see Marcum getting more than $7M as a 2nd year arby player.

Just to clarify for anyone who isn't familiar with MLB contracts, pretty much every player is under their club's control for the first 6 years of their career. Generally speaking, with some limited exceptions like Super 2's that would just confuse matters now, a club can pay a player whatever it wants in the player's first 3 years of service time. It does not matter whether they are a bench scrub or All-Star, the club sets their pay, and it's generally close to the minimum. Sometimes they'll get marginally more for major accomplishments early in the career, but we're always talking about a number less than $1 million.

Their next 3 season are considered arbitration years where they are still under club control but have a little bit more control over what they get payed. Usually arbitration pay increases every year, and by the 3rd year they're pretty close to making what they would make in a year on the FA market.

Also, there's no UFA's or RFA's, etc. They're either under contract or a free agent, no degrees of free agency.

Yeah, that's a good point. I guess the more I think about it, I could pretty see them being back around 80-85 next year. I just don't see where they would spend that money unless they go out and get a Shortstop, but if Hardy signs with Baltimore, there really isn't one in the 7-10 million dollar range I'd want, and Reyes is too expensive.

But to answer the previous question, I've said for the last couple years I believe the Brewers are capable of going over 100 next year and the year following with the TV deal. I've also believed that Mark A was going to make a very real effort to sign Prince. Not that I think that'd be wise per say, but he's always seemed to allude to a strong commitment to re-signing him. Just an inkling I have from some of his comments.

Though the ability to add additional payroll should come in handy with Greinke coming up. Perhaps if they are around 80 to start next year, they'll do like Ted and re-sign Greinke in season and give him a bonus...
