Jason Bartlett?

I think besides the big name shortstops he is the best of the available shortstops that the Brewers could realistically get. He can play D and has some decent speed as evidenced by his 18 sb's. Perfect bottom of the order hitter and replacement for Yuni. What do y'all think?

I am actually going to post on my blog this evening/tomorrow morning about some moves the Brewers still need to make - number one being a deal for a shortstop.

While J.J. Hardy and Rafael Furcal are feasible, I have my doubts about Hardy back in Milwaukee because of the situation here before he was dealt and Furcal is risky due to his injuries and age.

Thus, I felt Bartlett might be the best, most realistic option. Ignoring his horrible numbers at Petco this season (because Petco does that to everyone), he still has a career .341 OBP. On the surface, the "numbers" say his defense has been poor, but he's a solid shortstop with average to good range - obvious upgrades in the field and at the plate for our shortstop.

Bartlett has a contract for next year at $5.5 million, plus a 2013 option with a $1.5 million buyout. That's $7 million. That is a lot for a guy who has made 50% more errors this year than Betancourt and who has never really been all that great defensively. He's a marginal upgrade on offense, with some upside potential beyond marginal, but then Yuni too has potential to exceed his first half on offense. Maybe if the Pads threw in $3 million.

Bartlett has been horrible this season. Worse than Yuni both at the plate and in the field. He has all the makings of a one year wonder.

Jack Wilson is a good idea though, but he hasn't played much short this year. All that said, I think that Furcal will be in a Brewers uniform by the end of the month.

Bartlett's been better both in the field and at the plate.

Bartlett's got a WAR of .3 whereas Betancourt is -.7.

He also has better defensive ratings according to fangraphs, and he's hitting about .240/.305. I'll take that, even with very little power any day over Betancourt.
