I'm trying to come up with a comp for Gindl, good OBP guy, reasonable power, and average to above average corner D. Any ideas? I was kind of thinking Brady Clark, who had a pretty good run, but Clark was about 2 years older than Gindl at every level.

I'd go with (poor-man's?) Brian Giles.

However, at age 22, Giles was still in AA, while Caleb is at AAA. It's not responsible to project that Gindl will have the kind of career that Giles did, but it's certainly not a crazy comparison.

Final (game one): @DSL Brewers 7, DSL Athletics 4 (7 innings)

Final (game two): @DSL Brewers 6, DSL Athletics 1 (7 innings)

The first game was 7-0 until a too-little, too-late four-run 7th by the Atleticitos.19-year-old Joel Dicent continues to pitch well, five shutout innings with a 6/3 K/BB today. 19-year-old Orlando Torrez allowed just his second run of the year in three innings of work in game two, striking out three and walking one. Yonki Hernandez smacked a grand slam in the first game, and wee bairn Esthervin Matos had a very nice day, 3-5 with a single and a HBP. Even wee-er Elvis Rubio, on the heels of his first pro homer two days ago, was 3-7 with a double; hopefully he's finally finding his feet. 20-year-old Dionis Hinojosa may be too old to really catch your eye, but he deserves special mention for going 3-4 in the second game with four stolen bases. Raul Mondesi doubled and walked in three trips, and Orlando Arcia was 1-4. Jose Pena was 0-8, dropping his average to .188

The D-A's actually brought the winning run to the plate in the first game. You can see that Juan Francisco had a bit of trouble finding the zone:

DSL Athletics Top of the 7th
  • Shawn Duinkerk walks.
  • Jesus Rivas homers (1) on a line drive to left field. Shawn Duinkerk scores.
  • Gabriel Santana walks.
  • Alfredo Sosa walks. Gabriel Santana to 2nd.
  • Wilman Martinez lines out to shortstop Orlando Arcia.
  • Vicmal De La Cruz walks. Gabriel Santana to 3rd. Alfredo Sosa to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Angel Ventura replaces Juan Francisco.
  • Jose Rosario pops out to second baseman Francisco Castillo.
  • Renato Nunez reaches on throwing error by third baseman Sthervin Matos. Gabriel Santana scores. Alfredo Sosa scores. Vicmal De La Cruz to 3rd.
  • Diego Ledezma walks. Renato Nunez to 2nd.

Final (game one): Carolina 6, @Huntsville 2 (7 innings)

Final (game two): Carolina 6, @Huntsville 2 (7 innings)

Not a misprint, sadly. Dan Merklinger lost the first game by letting a few too many fly over the wall: 5 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 4 K, 3 HR. RJ Seidel, just back from BC, made the second start and allowed two runs in three innings, but three unearned runs off Darren Byrd provided the big blow. Rob Wooten allowed an earned run for the first time in exactly a month. Logan Schafer spent most of the day on base, 2-3 with a double, two walks, and a HBP in total. Erik Komatsu was 1-5 with a walk, but the one hit was his sixth homer. Zelous Wheeler collected a double in each game.

Probably not a good idea to get caught stealing third here down 5-1:

Huntsville Bottom of the 6th
  • Logan Schafer hit by pitch.
  • Matt Cline singles on a ground ball to center fielder Denis Phipps. Logan Schafer to 2nd.
  • Sean Halton flies out to center fielder Denis Phipps.
  • With Zelous Wheeler batting, Logan Schafer caught stealing 3rd base, catcher Yasmani Grandal to third baseman Jake Kahaulelio, Matt Cline to 2nd.
  • Zelous Wheeler doubles (8) on a fly ball to center fielder Denis Phipps. Matt Cline scores.
  • Erik Komatsu walks.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard strikes out swinging.

Lamest three-run inning ever?

Carolina Top of the 4th
  • Pitcher Change: Darren Byrd replaces R. J. Seidel, batting 9th.
  • Jake Kahaulelio reaches on fielding error by third baseman Zelous Wheeler.
  • James Skelton walks. Jake Kahaulelio to 2nd.
  • Carlos Mendez grounds into a force out, shortstop Matt Cline to second baseman Sergio Miranda. James Skelton out at 2nd. Carlos Mendez to 1st.
  • Brandon Hynick out on a sacrifice bunt, first baseman Steffan Wilson to second baseman Sergio Miranda. Jake Kahaulelio to 3rd. Carlos Mendez to 2nd.
  • Denis Phipps singles on a ground ball to shortstop Matt Cline. Jake Kahaulelio scores. Carlos Mendez to 3rd.
  • Jose Castro reaches on fielding error by shortstop Matt Cline. Carlos Mendez scores. Denis Phipps to 2nd.
  • With David Cook batting, wild pitch by Darren Byrd, Denis Phipps scores.
  • David Cook grounds out, pitcher Darren Byrd to first baseman Steffan Wilson.

Incidentally, James Skelton entered the day batting .268 /.396/.423 in 28 games for the Mudcats. I wish the Brewers would have hung on to him.

Final (game one): Fort Myers 5, @Brevard County 1 (7 innings)

Final (game two): @Brevard County 6, Fort Myers 5 (7 innings)

The Manatees looked well on their way to joining the Stars in a lackluster doubleheader sweep before they found their fighting Sea Cow spirit in the bottom of the 6th in game two, rallying for four runs to turn a 5-2 deficit into a 6-5 win. Guess who provided the hammer blow? If you guessed Khris Davis, you win no points for fortune-telling but several for paying attention. Khris came off the bench to launch a two-out, three-run blast, and also doubled in the first game. Pro. Mote. Him. Other batting lines: D'Vontrey Richardson, 2-5, walk; Scooter Gennett, 2-7; Kentrail Davis, 1-7, double; Hunter Morris, 1-6. Hiram Burgos allowed four runs (three earned) in five innings in the first game, and after a scoreless inning from Evan Anundsen in the second game, 'Tees fans were treated with yet another Rolando Pascual implosion--if his regular order is four runs and one out, Pascual ordered the diet today, still giving up the four but this time retiring two batters. The fact that Anundsen was removed after just one inning, having pitched well, is slightly concerning.

First, Pascual's...whatever it was. You just have to smile, if ruefully. Looks like he ordered the usual after all but got lucky:

Fort Myers Top of the 2nd
  • Pitcher Change: Rolando Pascual replaces Evan Anundsen.
  • Oswaldo Arcia walks.
  • With Anderson Hidalgo batting, passed ball by Michael Roberts, Oswaldo Arcia to 2nd.
  • Anderson Hidalgo flies out to left fielder Juan Sanchez.
  • With Daniel Rohlfing batting, wild pitch by Rolando Pascual, Oswaldo Arcia to 3rd.
  • With Daniel Rohlfing batting, passed ball by Michael Roberts, Oswaldo Arcia scores.
  • Daniel Rohlfing walks.
  • Steven Liddle walks. Daniel Rohlfing to 2nd.
  • Ramon Santana hit by pitch. Daniel Rohlfing to 3rd. Steven Liddle to 2nd.
  • Daniel Rohlfing out at home, catcher Michael Roberts to pitcher Rolando Pascual. Steven Liddle to 3rd. Ramon Santana to 2nd.
  • Jonathan Goncalves walks.
  • Pitcher Change: Mark Willinsky replaces Rolando Pascual.
  • James Beresford singles on a line drive to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson. Steven Liddle scores. Ramon Santana scores. Jonathan Goncalves to 3rd.
  • Jamaal Hawkins singles on a line drive to right fielder Kentrail Davis. Jonathan Goncalves scores. James Beresford to 2nd.
  • Aaron Hicks flies out to left fielder Juan Sanchez.

BC made a weird out at home too. Why was the shortstop in there? Was there a shift on?

Brevard County Bottom of the 4th
  • D' Vontrey Richardson grounds out, shortstop James Beresford to first baseman Steven Liddle.
  • Shea Vucinich singles on a ground ball to shortstop James Beresford.
  • Juan Sanchez singles on a ground ball to center fielder Aaron Hicks. Shea Vucinich to 3rd.
  • Josh Prince out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Oswaldo Arcia. Shea Vucinich scores. Juan Sanchez to 2nd.
  • Scott Krieger singles on a ground ball to shortstop James Beresford. Juan Sanchez to 3rd.
  • With Michael Roberts batting, Juan Sanchez caught stealing home, catcher Daniel Rohlfing to shortstop James Beresford to catcher Daniel Rohlfing.

His Majesty:

Brevard County Bottom of the 6th
  • D' Vontrey Richardson walks.
  • Shea Vucinich walks. D' Vontrey Richardson to 2nd.
  • Juan Sanchez reaches on fielding error by third baseman Anderson Hidalgo. D' Vontrey Richardson to 3rd. Shea Vucinich to 2nd.
  • Josh Prince called out on strikes.
  • Scott Krieger out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Aaron Hicks. D' Vontrey Richardson scores.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Khristopher Davis replaces Michael Roberts.
  • Khristopher Davis homers (14) on a fly ball to left field. Shea Vucinich scores. Juan Sanchez scores.
  • Scooter Gennett reaches on fielding error by left fielder Jonathan Goncalves. Scooter Gennett to 2nd.
  • Kentrail Davis flies out to right fielder Oswaldo Arcia.

Roque Mercedes was very fortunate not to blow the save:

Fort Myers Top of the 7th
  • Pitcher Change: Roque Mercedes replaces Efrain Nieves.
  • James Beresford singles on a line drive to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson.
  • Jamaal Hawkins strikes out swinging.
  • Aaron Hicks singles on a ground ball to left fielder Juan Sanchez. James Beresford to 2nd.
  • Oswaldo Arcia walks. James Beresford to 3rd. Aaron Hicks to 2nd.
  • Anderson Hidalgo grounds into double play, shortstop Josh Prince to second baseman Scooter Gennett to first baseman Hunter Morris. Oswaldo Arcia out at 2nd.

Final: @Quad Cities 4, Wisconsin 1

Quad Cities sweeps Rattlers

DAVENPORT, IA – The Quad Cities River Bandits returned the favor to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Wisconsin swept a three-game series from the River Bandits at Modern Woodmen Park back in May. The Bandits defeated the Rattlers 4-1 on Monday night to complete a three-game sweep of Wisconsin. Anthony Ferrara allowed one run over six innings to get his sixth win of the season. Ferrara and two relievers combined to hold the Rattlers to four hits in the game.

Rattlers starting pitcher Del Howell recorded the first two outs in the bottom of the first inning. But, a walk, a double, and another walk loaded the bases for the River Bandits (50-37 overall, 10-8 second half). Cody Stanley stepped up and drove in a pair of runs with a single for a 2-0 lead. This marks the eighth straight game in which the Rattlers opponent has scored first.

Wisconsin (46-42, 8-10) loaded the bases with no outs on a walk and a pair of hits in the top of the second against Ferrara. Mike Brownstein grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to score the Rattlers first run. That was the only run the Rattlers would score in the inning. Also, the Rattlers wouldn’t get another hit until the eighth inning.

Quad Cities added to their lead in the third inning. Michael Swinson doubled to start the inning. Oscar Taveras followed with a sharp single to left. Swinson was held at third, until the ball was bobbled for an error. Swinson scored on the play to give the River Bandits a 3-1 lead.

The River Bandits loaded the bases with no outs against Dan Britt on a pair of walks and a single. Ronny Gil’s sacrifice fly to center got a run home for a 4-1 Quad Cities advantage.

Cody Hawn started the ninth inning with a single to extend his current hitting streak to 12 games. But, the Rattlers could do nothing with the single and dropped their fourth straight game.

Wisconsin is off on Tuesday night before returning to action on Wednesday night at Time Warner Cable Field. The Rattlers start a three game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps at 7:05 PM. Matt Miller (3-4, 4.89) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The Whitecaps have named Kevin Eichhorn (7-3, 3.46) as their starter.

Wednesday is a bonus Bang for Your Buck Night with Pepsi products, Cher-Make hot dogs, and Miller Beer available for $1. American TV Win-It Wednesday means that every fan aged 16 and older will receive a scratch-off ticket and every ticket is a winner with prizes from the Timber Rattlers and American TV of Appleton.

Wisconsin Box Score

Not much fun here. Del Howell will be 24 in September and it's getting tougher to build up enthusiasm for the lefty. Give credit to RHP Adrian Rosario -- he helped spare Dan Britt's pitching line by escaping a one-out, men on 2nd and 3rd inherited situation, and would add two additional scoreless innings to keep things relatively close.

Four Rattlers singled, and two of those batters, Cody Hawn and Joey Paciorek, also walked; Nick Shaw walked three times, boosting his league-leading total to 59 -- that's three more walks in one game than RF Franklin Romero, Jr. has all season (stats), and because Romero has hit another milestone (200 AB's), the truly historic feat gets another mention here. We need to reach out to the minor league SABR world to find anything similar, because Romero has already near-eclipsed any similar consequence on the major league side. And no, that link doesn't refer to that Alex Sanchez. It's really at the point now where you have to root against any base on balls just to see if Frankie can go season-long.

Do you think Khris Davis is bored with A+ ball by now?

Leads league in OPS by a wide margin. Probably eventually trade bait since he's blocked for the next 10 years, unless he learns to play first base.

I've been wondering if Seth Smith of the Rockies might be a good comparison.

Final: @Helena 6, Great Falls 3

Ramirez, Brewers Snap Streak

By Nicholas Allen, Helena Brewers

The Voyagers struck first, but Helena would rally and hold on for a 6-3 victory Monday night at Kindrick Legion Field. Nick Ramirez provided the big blow when he connected for a three-run homer on the first pitch he saw from Stephen McCray in the bottom of the seventh. The bomb stretched the lead to 6-1, giving the Brewers the cushion they needed to snap a three-game losing streak.

Great Falls got on the board in the second when Jerry Puentes singled through the hole at shortstop to score Mark Haddow. It was the third RBI of the season for Voyagers third baseman, all coming in Helena. Kevin Shackelford (1-1) would not allow another run, going 6.2 innings while scattering nine hits, walking two and striking out one to earn the victory.

The Brewers would answer in the third when a Ramirez single brought home Kyle Dhanani, who doubled earlier in the inning. Ramirez ended the night 3-for-3 with four RBI, all of which came with two outs. Helena took the lead in the fourth on Max Walla's leadoff home run, adding insurance in the seventh on an RBI single by Yadiel Rivera and Ramirez's homer. The Voyagers would score two in the eighth, but Sean Albury slammed the door in the ninth to earn his second save.

The Brewers will have their first off-day of the 2011 season Tuesday, July 12, before travelling to Idaho Falls to begin a three game series against the Chukars. The seven-game road trip will include a four game set in Casper before returning to Helena July 21. It will be the first time in 2011 Helena has faced an opponent from the Pioneer League's Southern Division.

SKID SNAPPED: Brewers’ defense shines; losing streak ends at three

Helena Independent Record

The Helena Brewers halted a three-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over the Great Falls Voyagers on Monday night at Kindrick Legion Field.

Nick Ramirez, Max Walla and Yadiel Rivera sparked the offense, while Kevin Shackleford, Jacob Barnes and Shawn Albury handled the mound duties.

But the real story of the home team’s Pioneer League victory was its stellar defense, as the Brewers’ outstanding work with the leather killed several Voyager rallies.

Helena twisted three 6-4-3 double plays — Rivera-to-Gant Elmore-to-Michael Nemeth — two of which ended innings, in the third and the fourth.

Centerfielder John Dishon and right fielder Walla both made spectacular catches to steal base hits from their Northern Division foes, while first baseman Nemeth also turned in a web gem on a difficult pop-up.

Helena’s big inning was the seventh.

With the locals hanging on to a 2-1 lead, Nemeth led off with single. After advancing to third on a wild pitch and a groundout, he came home on Rivera’s RBI single to right.

The base hit upped Rivera’s hitting streak to 10 consecutive games, and his team-leading RBIs to 14.

Next, Kyle Dhanani singled, and then Ramirez scalded a three-run homer over the centerfield fence, giving the home team a 6-1 lead.

Ramirez, a 6-foot-3, 225-pounder from Chino Hills, Calif., entered the game with a .271 average that climbed considerably to .314 following his 3-for-3 performance Monday, including four RBIs.

The guests scored first, with a run in the second inning.

Helena answered right back in the third to tie it up on a double by Dhanani and a run-scoring single by Ramirez.

Helena manager Joe Ayrault’s club then went on top by one when Walla jacked a solo home run in the fourth to the deepest part of the ballpark in straightaway center.

Barnes relieved Shackleford with two out in the top of the seventh, after a double by Voyager Keenyn Walker. Walker then stole third, but was stranded 90 feet from home when Barnes fanned Joe De Pinto.

Great Falls scored a pair in the eighth on a walk by David Herbek, a double by Michael Earley and Leighton Pangilinan’s two-run double.

But Albury shut the door in the ninth, fanning two and getting Herbek to fly out to center to end the contest.

Shackleford (1-1), a native of Charlotte, N.C., picked up his first win of the season. The 6-5, 215-pounder, who attended Marshall University, went 6.2 innings, scattering nine hits and allowing just one run.

Pete Gehle started for the Voyagers and took the loss. The visitors actually out-hit the Brewers 11-9, led by Walker’s 3 for 5 effort, including two doubles.

Photos by Eliza Wiley Independent Record - Great Falls Voyager Keenyn Walker is caught in a pickle Monday night as he tries to scramble away from Helena Brewer third baseman Yadiel Rivera but was unsuccessful.

Helena Box Score

Nice way to go in to the day off, which actually isn't, thanks to the long bus ride -- welcome to pro ball, guys; great to read about the stellar defense, isn't it? Kevin Shackelford had the groundball pitches working, 10-to-3 ratio; 1B Mike Nemeth had a nationally recognized defensive reputation at first base coming out of UConn, so no surprise there -- he has been played at third base some with the H-Crew (six games at the hot corner)...

Helena Play-by-Play

Both in the 1st and 3rd innings, Great Falls had a man at 3rd with less then two out and failed to score, nice work by Shackelford...

Final: @AZL Brewers 7, AZL Mariners 6, 11 innings

Arizona Box Score

Surely for the 12 in attendance (and don't we miss AZL box score attendance figures?), this was an incredibly exciting game; the Mariners scored an insurance run in the top of the 9th to take a 6-4 lead, but Andres Martinez, who played second base for the second time in his pro career in this one, hit a two-out, two-run home run to tie the game and send things to extras. Then DH Adam Weisenburger capped a four-hit night with another clutch two-out hit, singling in the walkoff run in the 11th.

Someone check Cameron Garfield's arm to make sure it didn't fall off, because it was busy. Garfield, rehbbing a knee injury, saw the Mariners attempt nine stolen bases, and he was able to cut down four men, great job. (Actually upon further review of the game log, Garfield threw out two baserunners in the traditional sense, and those were big, but other baserunners were cut down through pickoffs and such). The Brewers weren't slick on the basepaths, either (only 1-for-4 in attempts).

Garfield was on base three times and is raking at this level, 1.179 OPS afer six games. Jose Garcia, playing CF for the 3rd time this season, joined Weisenburger with four hits, 4-for-5 with a double. RF Ronny Puello's struggles continue, 0-for-5 and now 1-for-34 on the season (.029).

Did we mention Mark Rogers' start? Not overly impressive, but at least he's on a mound --

AZL Mariners Top of the 1st

  • Yidid Batista grounds out, shortstop Renaldo Jenkins to first baseman Hitaniel Arias.
  • Martin Peguero grounds out, second baseman Andres Martinez to first baseman Hitaniel Arias.
  • Alfredo Morales walks.
  • With Ramon Morla batting, Alfredo Morales steals (7) 2nd base.
  • Ramon Morla flies out to right fielder Ronny Puello.

AZL Mariners Top of the 2nd

  • Chris Andreas singles on a ground ball to left fielder Brandon Macias.
  • With Reginald Lawson batting, Chris Andreas caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Cameron Garfield to shortstop Renaldo Jenkins.
  • Reginald Lawson singles on a ground ball to right fielder Ronny Puello.
  • Phillips Castillo doubles (9) on a fly ball to right fielder Ronny Puello. Reginald Lawson to 3rd.
  • Stephen Cochrane grounds out, third baseman Jalen Harris to first baseman Hitaniel Arias. Reginald Lawson scores.
  • With Hassiel Jimenez batting, Phillips Castillo steals (4) 3rd base, Phillips Castillo scores. Throwing error by catcher Cameron Garfield.
  • Hassiel Jimenez homers (1) on a fly ball to left field.
  • Yidid Batista walks.
  • Pitcher Change: Stephen Peterson replaces Mark Rogers.
  • With Martin Peguero batting, Yidid Batista steals (6) 2nd base.
  • With Martin Peguero batting, Yidid Batista advances to 3rd on caught stealing error by Jalen Harris, assist to pitcher Stephen Peterson.
  • Martin Peguero strikes out swinging.

LHP Stephen Peterson, RHP Danny Keller, and RHP Mike White deserve mentions for their work the rest of the way, particularly the just-turned 19-year-old Keller with three scoreless frames.

Arizona Play-by-Play

Your game-tying and game-winning rallies -- notice how Andres Martinez was pulled immediately after his huge home run. A calculated defensive switch or perhaps a reprimand for styling during the home run celebration? You can speculate either way, heck, he may have twisted an ankle rounding the bases...

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 9th

  • Defensive Substitution: Jose Martinez replaces third baseman Ramon Morla, batting 4th, playing third base.
  • Ronny Puello pops out to catcher Hassiel Jimenez in foul territory.
  • Jose R. Garcia doubles (1) on a fly ball to left fielder Phillips Castillo.
  • Renaldo Jenkins called out on strikes.

I'm trying to come up with a comp for Gindl, good OBP guy, reasonable power, and average to above average corner D. Any ideas? I was kind of thinking Brady Clark, who had a pretty good run, but Clark was about 2 years older than Gindl at every level.

Luis Gonzalez?
