Watching the Futures Game, Liddi can sure pick it at 3B, wow.

Matt Moore is pitching right now from the Rays, his first 3 pitches... 95, 99, and 100... as a starting pitcher, left handed, with great control... and ohh my goodness a plus slider to make Liddi look silly. Moore and Price, 2 LHP pitchers headlining that rotation, I would think in the next year or so. I wonder who they trade to make room for Moore? Neimann?

Final: @Quad Cities 6, Wisconsin 5 (11 innings)

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

July 10, 2011 DAVENPORT, IA - The Quad Cities River Bandits topped the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-5 in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park. The Rattlers grabbed the lead twice, but could not hold on either time as they lost their third straight game.

The River Bandits (49-37 overall, 9-8 second half) scored in the bottom of the first inning. Quad Cities had runners on first and third with one two outs when Wisconsin starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson walked two consecutive batters. The first walk - to Michael Swinson - loaded the bases. The second walk - to Geoff Klein - forced in a run for a 1-0 lead.

The Rattlers (46-41, 8-9) answered in the top of the third inning. Jason Rogers drew a leadoff walk. One out later Cody Hawn extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single to put runners on first and third. Greg Hopkins launched a 1-1 pitch from Boone Whiting over the wall in left for a three-run homer and a 3-1 Rattlers lead.

The River Bandits tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Kolten Wong doubled in the run to make it 3-2. Later in the inning, Wong scored on a sacrifice fly by Oscar Tavares to tie the game 3-3.

Quad Cities had runners at first and third with no outs in the bottom of the fifth. Chris Edmondson sent a high fly to medium right-center field. Chad Stang made the catch and threw out the go ahead run at the plate.

The Rattlers bats came out of hibernation in the eighth inning. After Hopkins hit his home run in the second inning, River Bandits pitchers retired the next 18 Wisconsin batters. Joey Paciorek tripled with one out in the eighth. Mike Brownstein chopped a single over the drawn in infield to send Paciorek home.

Nick Shaw singled to right on a hit-and-run and Brownstein made it to third. River Bandits right fielder Oscar Tavares bobbled the ball as he tried to make a throw to third. Then, he flipped the ball casually to the cutoff man. Brownstein took off for home on the lob. Brownstein scored on the play and the Rattlers were up 5-3.

But the Rattlers could not hold the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Brian Garman, who was in his third inning of relief, got the first out. Then, a walk and a double put the tying runs in scoring position. Rattlers closer Greg Holle entered the game and got the second out.

Then, Jonathan Rodriguez pinch hit for Tavares. He lined a pitch from Holle off the wall in left for a two-run single to even the game 5-5.

Quad Cities loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eleventh inning on a leadoff single, a stolen base, a walk, a ground out, and an intentional walk.

Klein, who drove in the first run of the game, drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly to left to give the Bandits a 6-5 win.

The final game of the series at Modern Woodmen Park is Monday night. Del Howell (1-4, 5.13) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. The River Bandits have Anthony Ferrara (7-4, 3.21) is scheduled to start. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

Just a torrent of baserunners allowed by Nelson, who somehow kept the damage to three runs: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 BB, 5 K, 4/3 GO/FO, 92 pitches, 53 strikes. It was usually steady Eric Marzec who faltered and allowed the winning run in the 11th. All five of the Rattlers' hits are mentioned above, and besides those and Rogers' walk, they put just two other men on base, a Paciorek free pass and a TJ Mittelstaedt HBP.

Thornburg is on the mound right now in the 5th.

Thornburg's first batter: 95 MPH FB, 79 Curve (looked good), 95 FB, 95 FB... ground out they are talking about reports labeling him a reliever and discussing delivery issues.

2nd Batter: 95 FB, 82 MPH breaking pitch (couldn't identify it, want to call it a change?)... ground out

3rd Batter: 79 Curve, 82 MPH breaking pitch again, might be the curve.. hit to left

4th Batter: 94 FB - fly out to left

It kind of bugs me that whoever the analyst is(Hershiser?) just looks at the kids deleivery and assumes he will be a relief pitcher.

Plenty of guys with funky deliveries(and Thornburgs didn't look that bad to me) have become very effective starting pitchers.

Johnny Cueto's delivery is almost a Luis Tiant clone and he has done alright.

It just hit me, is Trout not playing in this? Gary Brown is in CF.

About Thornburg... the ESPN gun is a couple MPH hot. He was working closer to 93. I wasn't blown away by the curve, and certainly not by the change. Still work to do, but definitely has the tools to be a starter.
So that was a change, the first one looked like it moved away from the the lefty, the 2nd just looped in there.

yep I thought the 79 was cleary a curve with a decent break... not great, but average or maybe slightly better. The angle is tough though for a RHP tailing something away... it's hard to tell if it's the angle or the pitch moved.
