Our Wisconsin friend Brad Krause attended Wednesday's game, but let's not bury his thoughts (check the link) in an older Link Report:

- Maybe I just missed the announcement of the last name, but I'm pretty sure that Stosh Wawrzasek was introduced simply as Stosh. That's pretty awesome!

- And speaking of awesome, check out the Mittelstaedt Mohawk!

More From Brad:

Here are my photos from the game. I'll be back out at Fox Cities Stadium next Wednesday. I'm not missing a chance to see West Michigan hitting coach and one of my favorite former Brewers, Ben Oglivie! After that I'm heading out on a nice little week long road trip to check out some other Midwest League teams and stadiums including Beloit, Clinton, Quad Cities and Cedar Rapids. Then three games in Des Moines as ex-Rattlers Michael Fiers, Daniel Meadows, Taylor Green and the Nashville Sounds take on the Iowa Cubs. If anyone's interested in seeing pics from the trip let me know and maybe I'll put a post up on here when I get back.

Brad, consider us interested, thanks!

Just one big poopy day for the organization.

Lone bright spot - Fiers through five picking up for the most part where he left off in AA save for a few more walks than usual. I realize I just jinxed him to get totally lit up in the 6th as well as his next start. I'll go cain myself presently.

Final (game one): Carolina 7, @Huntsville 3 (7 innings)

Final (game two): Carolina 8, @Huntsville 5 (7 innings)

In game one, Mudcats starter Matt Klinker held the Stars to three runs in seven innings despite allowing 12 hits and a walk. Santo Manzanillo made his AA debut, allowing a solo homer in two innings with no walks or strikeouts. Kyle Heckathorn's Huntsville bow didn't go very well: 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 2 K, 1 HR, 2/4 GO/FO. Not sure why we don't have pitch/strike counts, but whatever, not like it would paint a prettier picture. Jim Henderson followed Heckathorn and let in five more runs, consigning the Stars to the sweep. Cumulative batting lines: Erik Komatsu was 3-5 with two walks, Sean Halton was 3-8, and Lee Haydel 2-7 with a walk. Logan Schafer was 0-4 and Martin Maldonado 1-3 with a double in game two; neither played in the first game. Haydel was caught stealing for the 13th (!) time already--ye gods.

Maldonado was ejected in the 6th inning of game two after striking out looking.

Final: Fort Myers 4, @Brevard County 1

Nick Bucci turned in a quality start but still allowed plenty of baserunners: 7 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 1 HR, 7/5 GO/FO. I have a feeling games like these just reinforce the Brewers' opinion of Bucci as a "bulldog", but I'd prefer he just be good. Hunter Morris cracked his 14th homer, but BC had just three other hits, two of them belonging to Shea Vucinich, who has to have the most ever multi-hit games for a guy batting .236. Scooter Gennett picked up the remaining hit, while Kentrail Davis and Khris Davis each drew a walk, and D'Vontrey Richardson was just a regular ol' 0-3. Orlando Arcia's brother Oswaldo homered for the Miracle.

Final: @Quad Cities 4, Wisconsin 0

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

DAVENPORT, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had faced Quad Cities River Bandits starting pitcher Zach Russell three times during the 2011 season before taking him on again on Saturday night at Modern Woodmen Park. In the previous three matchups, the Rattlers had hit five homers, scored 12 runs, and handed Russell two losses in 12-2/3 innings of work. The story was much different on Saturday. Russell pitched seven shutout innings and combined with two other pitchers for a 4-0 win over Wisconsin.

Kolten Wong, the #1 pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2011 draft, singled to start the Quad Cities first inning. He stole second and went to third on a throwing error. A sacrifice fly by Oscar Tavares sent Wong home with the first run of the game.

The River Bandits (48-37 overall, 8-8 second half) played long ball in the bottom of the second inning. Cody Stanley and Packy Elkins both hit solo homers off Wisconsin starting pitcher Brooks Hall in the frame and Quad Cities went up 3-0.

Ronny Gill doubled in a run with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 4-0.

Wisconsin (46-40, 8-8) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth inning against Russell. The River Bandits right-hander got out of the inning with a strikeout and a fly ball to keep Wisconsin off the scoreboard.

Russell left after seven innings. He struck out six and walked one while allowing just three hits. Russell retired the final eight batters he faced.

Iden Nazario and Aidan Lucas each pitched an inning out of the bullpen to hand Wisconsin its sixth shutout of the season.

Cody Hawn extended his hitting streak to ten games with a single in the top of the fifth. The other Rattlers hits were also singles. Chad Stang followed Hawn in the fifth with a single. Nick Shaw became the Rattlers first base runner with a single in the top of the fourth after Russell retired the first nine batters he faced in the game.

Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park. Jimmy Nelson (4-7, 4.54) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Quad Cities has Boone Whiting (1-1, 1.76) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 2:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 1:40pm.

Man, what a lame set of games. Hall was not very good: 3.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 2 HR, 2/5 GO/FO, 69 pitches, 40 strikes. Eric Marzec continues to pitch well, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout.

Final: @DSL Red Sox 3, DSL Brewers 2 (10 innings)

Leonard Lorenzo made his third start since coming back from suspension, and like the other two, it was good: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 6/3 GO/FO. Doni Arias worked three shutout innings before yielding the winning run in the 10th. Elvis Rubio collected his first professional homer and also drew two walks. Raul Mondesi also walked twice, Esthervin Matos was 1-4 with a double (and was moved up from ninth in the order to fifth), and Orlando Arcia continued his skein by going 0-2 after entering the game in the 8th.
The 'Ritos had a good chance to break the tie in the 9th:

DSL Brewers Top of the 9th
  • Dionis Hinojosa singles on a ground ball to third baseman Aneudis Peralta.
  • Raul Mondesi walks. Dionis Hinojosa to 2nd.
  • Sthervin Matos called out on strikes.
  • Deivi Mejia singles on a line drive to left fielder Anthony Amaya. Dionis Hinojosa out at home on the throw, left fielder Anthony Amaya to catcher David Sopilka. Raul Mondesi to 3rd on the throw. Deivi Mejia to 2nd.
  • Elvis Rubio walks.
  • Jorge De La Cruz strikes out swinging.

Final: AZL Angels 11, @ AZL Brewers 7

AZL Box Score

With a first pitch temperature of 99 degrees, a big offensive night probably seemed inevitable. The Angels scored in just two innings, but a seven-run inning plus a four-run inning will win you a lot of ballgames. The Brewers had jumped all over starter Frank DeJiulio, to the tune of seven runs after two innings, ending his night quite prematurely. But a trio of relievers was able to silence the Brewers' bats the rest of the way to secure the win, dropping the AZL squad to 3-13 on the season.

Mitch Stetter made his second AZL rehab appearance, working a scoreless first inning. He finished with no hits & no walks allowed, one hit batter, & two Ks. Francisco Rivero came in after Stetter, working two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts & one hit batter. 2011 39th-rounder LHP Elliot Glynn worked 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Manuel Ruiz was the victim during the Angels' seven-run 4th inning; Jose Oviedo & Connor Whalen worked the four-run 9th.

Hitaniel Arias (two-run shot) & Jalen Harris (three-run) each homered. Arias added a single & a walk; Harris also walked once. Brandon Macias had a double, stolen base, & two walks, but also two throwing errors at shortstop. Second baseman Andres Martinez had a double, a single, & stole a base. Cameron Garfield singled & walked; Matthew Franco doubled, & Jose Garcia singled.

AZL Play-by-Play

The first two offensive innings for the AZL Crew:

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 1st

  • Renaldo Jenkins grounds out, third baseman Brian Hernandez to first baseman Freddy Sandoval.
  • Andres Martinez strikes out swinging.
  • Cameron Garfield singles on a line drive to center fielder Andrew Workman.
  • Hitaniel Arias singles on a ground ball to left fielder Zachary Borenstein. Cameron Garfield to 2nd.
  • With Brandon Macias batting, wild pitch by Frank DeJiulio, Cameron Garfield to 3rd. Hitaniel Arias to 2nd.
  • Brandon Macias walks.
  • With Jalen Harris batting, wild pitch by Frank DeJiulio, Cameron Garfield scores. Hitaniel Arias to 3rd. Brandon Macias to 2nd.
  • Jalen Harris homers (1) on a fly ball to center field. Hitaniel Arias scores. Brandon Macias scores.
  • Matthew Franco doubles (1) on a line drive to left fielder Zachary Borenstein.
  • Ronny Puello called out on strikes.

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 2nd

  • Jose R. Garcia singles on a ground ball to third baseman Brian Hernandez.
  • Renaldo Jenkins triples (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Andrew Workman. Jose R. Garcia scores.
  • Andres Martinez grounds out, third baseman Brian Hernandez to first baseman Freddy Sandoval.
  • Cameron Garfield called out on strikes.
  • Hitaniel Arias homers (2) on a fly ball to left field. Renaldo Jenkins scores.
  • Brandon Macias doubles (3) on a line drive to left fielder Zachary Borenstein.
  • With Jalen Harris batting, Brandon Macias steals (3) 3rd base.
  • Jalen Harris walks.
  • Matthew Franco grounds out to first baseman Freddy Sandoval.

And then pretend the rest of the game didn't happen. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Final: Great Falls 13, @Helena 2

Visiting Voyagers Vandalize Brewers

By Nicholas Allen

Great Falls center fielder Keenyn Walker doubled to lead off the game in his first professional at-bat and advanced to third on an error by Ruben Ozuna. He would score on Joe De Pinto's RBI single. It was a good start to a career and a game as the Voyagers went on to a 13-2 victory.

Trailing 4-0 in the second, the Brewers threatened as Max Walla and Kyle Dhanani connected on a pair of RBI singles, but that was as close as Helena would get. Tyler Cravy (1-2) went four innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks, striking out five in the loss. The Voyagers scored 13 runs on 15 hits off four Brewers pitchers. The bright spot on the staff was Alan Williams, who struck out six Great Falls hitters over 2.1 innings. Williams now has 24 strikeouts in 11 innings, raising his Pioneer League leading strikeout ratio to 21.6 per nine innings.

The two teams will meet again Sunday in the second game of a three game set.

Helena Box ScoreOzuna's first-inning double was the only hit from the top four spots in the lineup. Leadoff man Adrian Williams walked twice & stole a base. All of the five through nine hitters added a hit apiece: Tyler Roberts doubled; Walla (who also walked), Dhanani, Yadiel Rivera, & John Dishon all had singles.

Starting pitcher Tyler Cravy allowed six earned runs, pitching into the 5th but not recording an out in the frame before being chased. Seth Lintz & Seth Harvey didn't fare any better in relief. As Allen mentioned in his game story, the 2011 UDFA Williams was not only the lone Helena pitcher to not get lit up, but he continued to show overpowering stuff against Pioneer League hitters. Not only does he have an incredible K rate, but his 24 strikeouts to just three (!) walks gives him a K/BB ratio of 8/1.

Sounds Snap Skid With 3-1 Triumph In Albuquerque

Fiers Earns Win In 1st Triple-A Start

Nashville Sounds

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Brett Carroll belted a go-ahead, two-run homer and Mike Fiers turned in a solid outing in his first Triple-A start to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 3-1 victory over Albuquerque on Saturday evening at Isotopes Park.

With the win, Nashville (40-49) snapped a three-game skid as well as its seven-game road losing streak.

Fiers (1-0) earned a win in his first career Triple-A start. The right-hander held Albuquerque to one run on four hits over five innings, walking three batters and striking out five during his 88-pitch effort.

Albuquerque broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning. With runners on the corners and one out, Jay Gibbons hit a bouncer to shortstop and the Sounds attempted to turn a double play. However, Gibbons beat Eric Farris' throw to first by a half-step to allow Dee Gordon to plate the game's first run.

Carroll (2-for-4) propelled Nashville into the lead with one swing of the bat in the sixth, slugging a two-run homer to left off Isotopes starter Tim Sexton. Caleb Gindl (2-for-4), who preceded Carroll with a single, also scored on the outfielder's 14th roundtripper of the season.

Listen to Stu's call of Carroll's home run via the lead link in this post.

The Sounds plated an insurance run in the top of the ninth to extend their lead to 3-1. Brandon Boggs lined an opposite-field, two-out single to left-center off Albuquerque reliever Jon Link to bring home Taylor Green, who scored in unearned fashion after opening the frame by reaching on a two-base fielding error by Isotopes first baseman Corey Smith.

Mike McClendon followed Fiers with two scoreless frames then turned things over to Tim Dillard, who worked around baserunners in the final two innings to keep Albuquerque off the scoreboard and earn his first save of the year.

Sexton (3-2) took a tough-luck loss after working a quality start for the Isotopes. The right-hander allowed two runs on four hits while fanning seven over seven frames of action.

The teams wrap up the series with a 7:05 PM finale on Sunday evening. Right-hander Josh Butler (4-5, 5.31) will toe the rubber for the Sounds to face Albuquerque right-hander Ian Snell (1-1, 9.45).

Nashville Box Score

The Sounds avoid the losses that plagued the entire organization Saturday night; this was Mike Fiers' 3rd AAA appearance, but first start; just silly that Milwaukee has gone with just 11 pitchers for a couple of weeks now (and Takashi Saito can't pitch consecutive days), when Mike McClendon is so capable and waiting at AAA...

Brewers clobbered at home by Great Falls

by Amber Kuehn, Helena Independent Record

Bolstered by the addition of the Chicago White Sox’ top draft pick this year, Keenyn Walker, and the consistent hitting of David Herbek, the Great Falls Voyagers blistered the Helena Brewers 13-2 Saturday at Kindrick Legion Field.

Making his pro debut, Walker — an outfielder out of Central Arizona Community College — went 2 for 6 with a pair of runs scored, two RBIs and a throw-out to third base. Herbek ran his hitting streak to 14 games with a single in a three-run fifth inning, and the Voyagers rode 15 hits to victory. Every Great Falls player in the lineup had a hit, and all but one scored a run.

“We swung the bats really well last night and it carried over into today,” Voyagers manager Ryan Newman said. “We got an outstanding outing from all of our pitchers and played solid defense, and when you do that you’re going to have a game like this.”

The 15 hits and 13 runs were the most allowed by Brewers pitchers this year. Helena fell to 9-11 and is now just 2-7 in July.

“They had a good night, we had an off night,” Brewers skipper Joe Ayrault said. “You’re going to have those at some point. Hopefully it sparks something in us and we get it rolling.”

Great Falls (9-11) led 7-2 after five innings but roughed up Helena reliever Seth Lintz in the seventh. Lintz was pulled after giving up two singles and a run-scoring double in favor of Seth Harvey. Harvey then needed 30 pitches before he’d record his first out, walking back-to-back batters before Walker stroked a two-run single past a diving Adrian Williams.

After Harvey issued his third free pass of the inning to load the bases — and then gave up another two-run single, this time to Michael Earley — the Brewers turned to their third pitcher of the frame, Alan Williams. The southpaw, who has been a stellar closer for Helena this season and leads the Pioneer League in strikeouts with 24, quickly dealt a trio of strikes to get the third out. But the damage was already done as the Voyagers pushed six runs across to put the hosts in their largest hole of the year. Helena is now 0-4 in games decided by more than three runs.

“Baseball is a roller coaster,” Ayrault said. “You just don’t want to get too high on your highs or too low on your lows.”

Three errors were a low point for Helena, as the team was hurt by defensive miscues in the outfield. It was a shaky performance from left field to right as John Dishon misplayed two routine bouncing balls for two errors in the game, Ruben Ozuna struggled to barehand a ball resting in the grass in center and Max Walla couldn’t get to a one-hopper off Jimmy Jacquot’s bat.

But the high point was Alan Williams, who struck out the side in the ninth to bring his total to six strikeouts in two innings.

“Williams was definitely the bright spot tonight,” Ayrault said.

The Voyagers know all about the sport’s ups and downs. Great Falls’ offense had been hot the previous night in Billings, getting eight runs on 15 hits, but it wasn’t enough as they were shaded by the Mustangs.

“You have to battle every night,” Newman said after his team’s second straight 15-hit night. “Everybody in our division, we’re all clumped together. It’s going to be a grind.”

With the win, Great Falls moved into a tie for third with Helena. Both trail Northern Division leaders Missoula and Billings (tied at 11-9) by two games.

Mark Haddow led the Voyagers at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs. The Great Falls bullpen was brilliant, hurling a two-hit shutout over the final five innings. Austin Evans earned his first win of the year, fanning four and walking one through two innings in relief of Scott Snodgrass. Snodgrass made his first start after four appearances out of the bullpen this season, giving up just two runs on four hits.

The Brewers have a quick turnaround, with an early afternoon contest today at 1:00 PM (2:00 Central). Eric Arnett (1-0, 4.57) heads to the mound for Helena, while the Brewers face lefty Blair Walters (1-0, 4.50).

“It’s professional baseball,” Aryault said. “We have to turn the page.”

TRANSACTIONS: Milwaukee came to terms with its 11th-round draft pick, Tommy Toledo out of Florida. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-hander was assigned to Helena on Saturday, after going 6-3 with a 3.99 ERA for the runner-up Gators this past season. Toledo was drafted twice previously — out of high school in 2007 by the San Diego Padres, and following his sophomore season at Florida by the Minnesota Twins.
