Final: Wisconsin 11, @Beloit 8 (11 innings)

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers
BELOIT, WI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers trailed the Beloit Snappers 6-1 early in Monday’s game at Pohlman Field. The team rallied back and took an 8-7 lead on a two-out, two-run homer by Jason Rogers in the top of the ninth only to see the Snappers tie the game in the bottom of the ninth and send the game to extra innings. But, Wisconsin prevailed 11-8 in 11 innings. Roger led the Rattlers 20-hit attack with four hits of his own.
The Snappers (45-36 overall, 7-4 second half) struck for four runs with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Rattlers starting pitcher Brooks Hall gave up a walk to Adam Bryant and a single to Nate Roberts with one out. Michael Gonzales singled to left, but Chad Stang threw Bryant out at the plate for the second out and to keep the game scoreless.

However, after a wild pitch moved Roberts and Gonzales into scoring position, Daniel Ortiz doubled down the right field line to knock in both runners. Jairo Perez followed with a home run off the scoreboard in left-center for a 4-0 Beloit lead.

The Rattlers (44-37, 6-5) answered with a two out run of their own in the top of the third inning. Reggie Keen doubled with two outs and scored on a single by TJ Mittelstaedt.

But, the Perez made the score 6-1 with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the third.

Wisconsin chipped away with a single run in the fourth on consecutive doubles by Joey Paciorek and Stang. The Rattlers made the score 6-3 with an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning when an errant throw to second on a potential inning ending force play got away and allowed Mike Walker to score.

But, Lance Ray gave the Snappers an insurance run with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth and the Rattlers were down 7-3.

Then, the Rattlers rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Keen tripled with one out on a ball lost in the sun. He scored on a single by Mittelstaedt. One out later, Walker singled to move Mittelstaedt into scoring position. Rogers singled to drive in Mittelstaedt and move Walker to third. Walker scored moments later on a wild pitch and the score was 7-6.

Rogers was up in the top of the ninth inning with two outs and Mittelstaedt at third base. The Rattlers DH slammed a 2-0 pitch to right for his first home run of the season and the Rattlers had their first lead of the game at 8-7.
Eric Marzec relieved for the bottom of the ninth inning and walked Wang-Wei Lin to start things for Beloit. After a sacrifice bunt and a hit batsman put runners on first and second, Gonzales sent a high chopper over the head of Greg Hopkins at third base. That base hit scored Lin to tie the game 8-8. It also moved the winning run around to third base. However, Marzec got out of the with a pair of fly outs to shallow right field to send the game to extra innings.

The Rattlers started the eleventh inning with Hopkins at the plate. He sent a grounder to short. But, the ball went through the legs of Daniel Santana and Hopkins was aboard on the fourth error of the game on the Snappers. Walker took a walk. Then, Rogers reached on a bunt single as he tried to drop a sacrifice bunt, but the Snappers had miscommunication on their bunt defense and it was too late when someone did field it. That loaded the bases.

Paciorek was down 0-2 when he got a pitch on the inside corner. The Rattlers catcher lined it down the left field line for a double to drive in a pair of runs and give Wisconsin a 10-8 lead. Rogers would score on a wild pitch and the Rattlers were up 11-8.

Marzec worked a routine 1-2-3 bottom of the eleventh to close out the game and give the Rattlers their first extra inning victory in six tries this season.
The final game of the road trip is Tuesday night at Pohlman Field. Jimmy Nelson (3-7, 4.60) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Beloit has Manuel Soliman (3-4, 3.88) set to start. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.

What a great game. Four hits for Rogers and three each for Keen, Mittelstaedt, Walker, and Paciorek. Paciorek, despite having only a handful of at-bats, has certainly been an interesting guy lately, especially with move to catcher (note two passed balls today), though he's almost 23 now after bouncing around the system since 2007. Weirdly, amidst all the carnage, Nick Shaw went 0-6 atop the order. The only walk the Rattlers drew on the day belonged, appropriately, to Walker--though when you're banging out 20 hits, who needs free passes? Hall's line: 5 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 7/1 GO/FO, 94 pitches, 64 strikes. Altogether Hall, Adrian Rosario, and Marzec fanned 14 Snappers.

The play at the plate in the 1st wasn't Stang's only assist of the day:

Beloit Bottom of the 5th
  • Michael Gonzales grounds out, shortstop Nick Shaw to first baseman Michael Walker.
  • Daniel Ortiz singles on a ground ball to left fielder Chad Stang. Daniel Ortiz out at 2nd, left fielder Chad Stang to second baseman T. J. Mittelstaedt.
  • Jairo Perez grounds out, third baseman Gregory Hopkins to first baseman Michael Walker.

Wonder what happened with Paciorek here:

Wisconsin Top of the 11th
  • Gregory Hopkins reaches on throwing error by shortstop Daniel Santana. Gregory Hopkins to 2nd.
  • Michael Walker walks.
  • Jason Rogers singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Jairo Perez. Gregory Hopkins to 3rd. Michael Walker to 2nd.
  • Joseph Paciorek doubles (2) on a line drive to left fielder Nate Roberts. Gregory Hopkins scores. Michael Walker scores. Jason Rogers to 3rd.
  • With Chad Stang batting, wild pitch by Michael Tonkin, Jason Rogers scores. Joseph Paciorek to 3rd.
  • Chad Stang grounds out, shortstop Daniel Santana to first baseman Lance Ray.
  • Pitcher Change: Andrei Lobanov replaces Michael Tonkin.
  • With Franklin Romero batting, Joseph Paciorek caught stealing home.
  • Franklin Romero flies out to right fielder Daniel Ortiz.

From those media notes --

Tim Dillard is expected to join the Nashville roster prior to gametime. A counter move will have to be made to activate him.

If it's not 3rd catcher Patrick Arlis back to the DL reliever Mark DiFelice going on the DL with an undisclosed (and thus who could have predicted?) injury, then I'll never predict a transaction again. Actually, would you guys hold me to that? Yikes, sweating it out now...

is Tj Mittelstadt legit? Is this guy a real prospect? I know nothing about him outside of his stat line...
It's kind of funny that outside of the link reporters no one has been talking about him much when he's having the best season thus far of any T-Rat. I really like his positional versatility, though he hasn't played any 3B this year according baseball-ref. I'll put it like this... if he's limited to the OF down the road then I'm not so excited yet, if there's any chance he could be a 2B or 3B, I'm very intrigued.

I don't know the answers to those questions, so like you I'm waiting to hear about his defense and long-term position, but his batting line pretty much speaks for itself.

Final: Huntsville 11, @Chattanooga 1

The bats provided the Independence Day fireworks, and Michael Fiers provided the perfect night-sky backdrop on which to fully appreciate them, tossing eight innings while allowing just an unearned run. Fiers fanned seven, walked three, and gave up just three hits. The Stars scored four runs in the 3rd and 6th innings but couldn't manage any in the more appropriate 7th; I think we'll find it within ourselves to forgive them. Erik Komatsu snapped out his torpor with two hits, including his fifth homer, and drove in four runs. Logan Schafer and Sean Halton were each on four times, Schafer with a hit and three walks and Halton with the reverse. Matt Cline and Hainley Statia (quietly hitting .272 though with no secondary skills to speak of) added two hits each, and Martin Maldonado continues to find some thunder in his bat, contributing a double today. Lee Haydel got the day off and thus missed the pyrotechnics.

Huntsville Top of the 3rd
  • Matt Cline singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Travis Denker.
  • Sean Halton singles on a sharp ground ball to third baseman Travis Denker. Matt Cline to 2nd.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard reaches on force attempt, fielding error by pitcher Roy Corcoran. Matt Cline to 3rd. Sean Halton to 2nd.
  • Erik Komatsu singles on a ground ball to right fielder Kyle Russell. Matt Cline scores. Sean Halton scores. Brock Kjeldgaard to 3rd on the throw. Erik Komatsu out at 2nd on the throw, right fielder Kyle Russell to catcher Gorman Erickson to shortstop Ivan Ochoa.
  • Zelous Wheeler doubles (4) on a fly ball to center fielder Brad Coon. Brock Kjeldgaard scores.
  • Martin Maldonado grounds out, shortstop Ivan Ochoa to first baseman Brian Cavazos-Galvez.
  • Hainley Statia singles on a ground ball to center fielder Brad Coon. Zelous Wheeler scores.
  • Michael Fiers flies out to right fielder Kyle Russell.

Huntsville Top of the 6th
  • Logan Schafer walks.
  • Matt Cline singles on a line drive to left fielder Alfredo Silverio. Logan Schafer to 2nd.
  • With Sean Halton batting, wild pitch by Scott Rice, Logan Schafer to 3rd. Matt Cline to 2nd.
  • Sean Halton singles on a line drive to center fielder Brad Coon. Logan Schafer scores. Matt Cline scores.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard strikes out swinging.
  • Erik Komatsu homers (5) on a fly ball to right field. Sean Halton scores.
  • Zelous Wheeler flies out to right fielder Kyle Russell.
  • Martin Maldonado strikes out swinging.

He's played RF, LF, 2B, 3B... and even pitched - he's the new Bill Hall!

Oh, and FREE MICHAEL FIERS. His WHIP as a starter this year in AA is 0.818. No, that is not a misprint.

Is that really Mark Rogers on the mound for the baby Brewers? If it is, then good thing a few Brewerfan members didn't get their way with a premature surgery for Mark.

Final: Clearwater 5, @Brevard County 1

Nick Bucci had a solid game going until a two-run 6th sullied his line: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 HR, 9/4 GO/FO, 103 pitches, 68 strikes. He threw 27 pitches in that 6th inning. Hey, a scoreless, walkless inning from Rolando Pascual, neat. Speaking of, if you've been wondering all this time what (now slightly less-) young Rolando looks like, his MiLB.com profile page has been updated with a picture:

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_503448.jpg

Can we nickname him "Uga"?

Anyway, Khris Davis went yard for the 13th time and also walked, and Hunter Morris had two hits and his fifth steal. As far as everyone else you're interested in, Kentrail Davis drew a walk (do more of that, Kentrail!) and D'Vontrey Richardson was hit by a pitch (do less of that, oft-injured D'Vo!)
Bucci's two trouble innings:

Clearwater Top of the 4th
  • Jonathan Singleton reaches on throwing error by third baseman Shea Vucinich.
  • Darin Ruf flies out to left fielder Khristopher Davis.
  • Sebastian Valle pops out to shortstop Juan Sanchez.
  • Jeremy Barnes homers (5) on a fly ball to left field. Jonathan Singleton scores.
  • Cesar Hernandez grounds out, shortstop Juan Sanchez to first baseman Hunter Morris.

Clearwater Top of the 6th
  • Michael Dabbs flies out to left fielder Khristopher Davis.
  • Jonathan Singleton doubles (12) on a line drive to right fielder Kentrail Davis.
  • Darin Ruf doubles (27) on a ground ball to left fielder Khristopher Davis. Jonathan Singleton scores.
  • Sebastian Valle walks.
  • Jeremy Barnes flies out to right fielder Kentrail Davis.
  • Cesar Hernandez walks. Darin Ruf to 3rd. Sebastian Valle to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Bradley Blanks replaces Nicholas Bucci.
  • Troy Hanzawa hit by pitch. Darin Ruf scores. Sebastian Valle to 3rd. Cesar Hernandez to 2nd.
  • Brian Gump called out on strikes.

Free Khris Davis.

That is all.

Final: @Nashville 5, Memphis 4

After finding themselves on the losing end of walk-offs the last three days, the Sounds finally got one of their own:

Nashville Bottom of the 9th
  • Jordan Brown pops out to first baseman Nick Stavinoha.
  • Edwin Maysonet walks.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Wil Nieves replaces Tim Dillard.
  • Wil Nieves singles on a ground ball to left fielder Andrew Brown. Edwin Maysonet to 2nd.
  • Eric Farris flies out to right fielder James Rapoport.
  • Caleb Gindl reaches on missed catch error by first baseman Nick Stavinoha, assist to third baseman Donovan Solano. Edwin Maysonet to 3rd. Wil Nieves to 2nd.
  • Brett Carroll hit by pitch. Edwin Maysonet scores. Wil Nieves to 3rd. Caleb Gindl to 2nd.

Not quite so dramatic as a walk-off homer, but they'll take it I'm sure. How big is that error by Stavinoha? Karmic retribution for that one-knee homer against Trevor Hoffman last year. #RedbirdsEatBabies

Josh Butler posted a second straight interesting start, trying to convince me not to give up on him: 7 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 9 K, 2 HR, 7/2 GO/FO, 98 pitches, 66 strikes. Brandon Boggs and Erick Almonte both went deep, Almonte's coming as a pinch hitter. Eric Farris had two hits, Caleb Gindl was 0-5, and Taylor Green was 0-3 with a HBP. Brett Carroll in addition to truly taking one for the team, had two outfield assists, giving him a league-leading 15 on the year. Sounds' recap tomorrow morning, but I'm off to bed.

Why not just quote me since you're taking issue with me? Let's see how he performs before we go to the "premature" card, cortisone shots don't fix the problem, they mask the problem by artificially reducing the amount of swelling in the affected area, which temporarily reduces the pain. It's pretty similar to chiropractory in that the issues causing the discomfort are not permanently solved, only temporarily band-aided.

If Mark has surgery this off-season then regardless of the results this season I think it's a bad move. I'd rather have him fully healed and ready to go for Feb since he'll be out of options than risk the alternatives. He has 16.2 pretty horrible innings thus far and I'm not sure what another 50-60 is going to prove regardless of quality if he still needs surgery. Either way he'll still be out of options having never pitched more than 130 innings in a single season.

'Tees topped by Threshers on 4th of July

Third straight loss for Brevard County

By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. -- In front of a crowd of 6,772 fans, the Brevard County Manatees fell 5-1 to the Clearwater Threshers on Monday night. The loss was the third in a row for the 'Tees.

Manatees (27-43 overall, 5-5 second half) starting pitcher Nick Bucci went 5 2/3 innings and allowed four runs - two earned - on four hits, while striking out three and walking three.

Brevard County fell in a 2-0 hole in the fourth, when Clearwater's Jeremy Barnes hit a two-out, two-run homer to left.

Khris Davis led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer to cut it to a 2-1 game. It was the 13th homer of the season for Davis and his third in the last five games.

Clearwater (39-30, 5-7) would extend its lead in the sixth as they scored two to chase Bucci from the game. They would score again in the seventh to make it 5-1.

For the 'Tees, other than the Khris Davis homer, they managed just three runners getting past first base.

Hunter Morris was the only Manatee who notched a multi-hit game as he went 2-for-4.

Brevard County will look to end their three-game skid as they play host to the Threshers again on Tuesday night at 7:05 PM (6:05 Central), in the second game of a four-game set.

Hiram Burgos (3-3, 3.48) is slated to take the hill Tuesday night for the 'Tees, while the Threshers will send Brody Colvin (1-3, 4.61) to the mound.

Nick Bucci allowed two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings and Khris Davis hit his 13th homer of the season as the Manatees fell 5-1 to the Threshers, in front of 6,772 fans on the 4th of July. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

  • Joseph Paciorek doubles (2) on a line drive to left fielder Nate Roberts. Gregory Hopkins scores. Michael Walker scores. Jason Rogers to 3rd.

  • Pitcher Change: Andrei Lobanov replaces Michael Tonkin.
  • With Franklin Romero batting, Joseph Paciorek caught stealing home.
  • Franklin Romero flies out to right fielder Daniel Ortiz.

And in his ultra-detailed Rattler Radio blog postgame thoughts, we learn what happened. Click the link, you know you want to.

Chris has really found his rythym with the use for the blog now. While I could appreciate his efforts, those pre-2011 posts regarding other Midwest League games or Mariner-based alumni were worthwhile for a few, but it just seems like Mr. Mehring is having a blast this season (a competitive Rattler squad helps). And to think that in early April, he limited himself to what, three post-game thoughts?

Packed House Watches Sounds Beat Redbirds, 5-4

Sounds walk off with hit by pitch in bottom of the ninth

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A Greer Stadium crowd of 9,944 fans watched the Nashville Sounds top the division-rival Memphis Redbirds in an exciting 5-4 victory on Independence Day in the opener of a three-game series.

In the bottom of the ninth inning with the bases loaded, outfielder Brett Carroll was hit by a Chuckie Fick inside fastball to force the game-winning run to score from third base. Nashville loaded the bases earlier in the inning on a walk, base hit, and Memphis fielding error.

You can listen to the game-winning HBP via the link to the game summary page, leading off this post.

Nashville (38-46) has now played a PCL-high 39 one-run games this season, going 17-22 in those contests. Four of the five contests with Memphis this season have been decided by one run.

A combined four homers were hit in the contest by both clubs. Brandon Boggs and Erick Almonte each went yard for the Sounds. Eric Farris went 2-for-5 from the leadoff spot to extend his hitting streak to a season-best 10 games, the longest active streak on the club.

In a no-decision, Sounds starter Josh Butler surrendered three runs on seven hits while fanning nine over seven innings, both a season-high. His nine strikeouts on the evening matched a season-best set by Frankie De La Cruz on April 20 at New Orleans. The quality start was Butler's second in a row and fourth of the season.

The Sounds jumped on the board to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Boggs worked a four-pitch walk, stole second base, and came home to score as Jordan Brown doubled down the right field line.

Memphis took a 2-1 lead in the in the next frame. Adron Chambers hit an infield single and was followed by a two-run homer over the wall in right field by shortstop Tyler Greene, his first of the season.

Boggs knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth with his seventh homer of the season over the right field picnic area.

Redbirds catcher Bryan Anderson untied the game in the top of the seventh with his fourth homer of the season.

Nashville plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take their first lead at 3-2. After Edwin Maysonet looped a lazy single over the shortstop's head, the pinch-hitter extraordinaire Almonte belted a two-run shot off Memphis' Corey Rauschenberger that just missed the guitar-shaped scoreboard in left center. The homer was Almonte's third of the season and second in a pinch-hitting role.

The Almonte homer moved the Sounds to a perfect 5-for-5 with a homer, double, walk, and six RBIs in their last six pinch-hit opportunities.

The Redbirds tied the contest at 4-4 in the next frame. Tim Dillard came into the contest to relieve Butler and allowed consecutive singles to Greene and Nick Stavinoha. Donovan Solano then singled to center field to score Greene for the tying run.

Dillard (4-1) gave up one run while scattering five hits in two innings pitched for the win. Dillard is now one win away from tying Keith Brown's (1988-92) franchise-leading 35 wins in Nashville Sounds history.

Memphis starter Adam Ottavino pitched a quality start for the Redbirds, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts in six innings. Rich Rundles (1-3) was charged with the loss.

The Sounds and division-rival Memphis Redbirds continue their brief three-game series at 7:05 PM CT on Tuesday night at Greer Stadium. Nashville left-hander Chase Wright (5-5, 5.43) toes the rubber against Memphis southpaw Nick Additon (2-4, 3.38).

I would hold you to it! I would make it my mission in life.

Just as I predicted http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif, Patrick Arlis remains entrenched as the 3rd active Nashville catcher and pitcher Mark DiFelice is placed on the DL with an undisclosed injury.

We'll note it for posterity in the Transaction Thread.

From what I understand, there is minimal chance he can injure himself further, so based on that information(and again, not a Doctor, so just going off the medical reports) it looks as though they're trying to see if they can get anything out of him this year and then solve the problem in the off-season.

He has 16.2 pretty horrible innings thus far and I'm not sure

what another 50-60 is going to prove regardless of quality if he still

needs surgery. Either way he'll still be out of options having never pitched more than 130 innings in a single season.

You're not sure what another 50 or 60 will prove? Well, we could kinda use a power armed reliever. If he can have the surgery in the off-season and have time to heal, I don't see what the problem with that is.

What's more, I don't get your point in mentioning that he'll still be out of options and having never had more than 130 innings in a single season. How does that argue for OR against surgery at this point?

Would those things NOT be true if he were to have gone under the knife before at least trying to salvage the season? Obviously. So I don't get the point here.
