Final: @Tampa 8, Brevard County 7

Austin Ross was no great shakes in his second start for the 'Tees, allowing four runs in five innings, but thanks to some hot hitting, that was good for a 7-4 lead entering the 8th. Despite a run there charged to Evan Anundsen, BC still held a two-run lead in the 9th, but Mark Willisky allowed one more than that to score and the game was lost. Ross fanned five, walked two, hit a batter, and surrendered five hits. Santo Manzanillo struck out the side in a perfect 6th inning. Scooter Gennett and Hunter Morris were each 3-4 with the sticks, with one of Morris's hits going for a double and Gennett also contributing a sac fly. Khris Davis drove in three with two hits, including a double, and a HBP and also stole his 10th base. Kentrail Davis and D'Vontrey Richardson each had one hit. Cleverly noting that manatees are evolved to swim and not walk, BC didn't even a single time. The honorably named Zoilo Almonte had three doubles for the T-Yanks.
BC scored five runs between the 3rd & 4th innings;

Brevard County Top of the 3rd

  • Pitcher Change: Santo Manzanillo replaces Austin Ross.
  • JR Murphy called out on strikes.
  • Rob Segedin strikes out swinging.
  • Luke Murton strikes out swinging, catcher Sean McCraw to first baseman Hunter Morris.

Nice to see, and he was protecting a 7-4 lead, but when did Santo Manzanillo and his 18 games finished and ridiculously good numbers become a 6th inning pitcher?

Likely took an opponent's backswing? What is it with head injuries the past few weeks? Wisconsin's T.J. Mittelsteadt while getting tagged at first base, Josh Butler and Brandon Williamson just avaoiding critical mound line drive dangers, etc. Know I'm missing others...

Final: @Huntsville 4, Mississippi 1

Wily Peralta was very good, if not dominant, tossing seven shutout innings. He allowed six hits and two walks while fanning four. He posted an 8/4 GO/AO and of his 98 pitches, 60 were strikes. An unearned run off Robert Hinton in the 8th was the Braves' lone tally. Sean Halton had an excellent night, going 3-4 with two doubles, and Logan Schafer was very good as well with two hits, a walk, and his fifth steal. Erik Komatsu took an 0-4 to extend his hitless streak, Martin Maldonado failed to record an extra-base hit, or a hit at all, for the first time this week, and Lee Haydel did not play.
Three of the eight runners Peralta allowed came in the 1st:

Mississippi Top of the 1st
  • Tyler Pastornicky singles on a ground ball to center fielder Logan Schafer.
  • Cory Harrilchak grounds into double play, second baseman Zelous Wheeler to shortstop Matt Cline to first baseman Sean Halton. Tyler Pastornicky out at 2nd.
  • Dan Nelson doubles (2) on a fly ball to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard.
  • Ernesto Mejia walks.
  • Donell Linares pops out to third baseman Steffan Wilson.

Final: Wisconsin 6, @Cedar Rapids 3

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored four times in the top of the fifth inning to rally from an early deficit at Perfect Game Field on Saturday night. Reliever Dan Britt made sure that lead held up and Eric Marzec closed the door in the 6-3 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels.
The Kernels (35-44 overall, 3-6 second half) took advantage of a pair of Wisconsin errors in the bottom of the first inning. Chris Giovinazzo reached on an error to start the inning and promptly stole second base. David Harris singled to left-center and Giovinazzo scored for a 1-0 lead.

Jeremy Cruz was next and he reached on an error that put him on second and sent Harris to third. An RBI grounder by Ricky Alvarez let Harris score for a 2-0 lead.

The Rattlers (42-37, 4-5) got a run back in the top of the second thanks to a Kernels error. Joey Paciorek’s grounder back to the mound was deflected to short. The throw to second to force Jason Rogers for the final out of the inning was dropped and Wisconsin’s inning was extended. Mike Brownstein doubled to left-center and Rogers scored. However, Paciorek was out at the plate to end the frame.

Cedar Rapids scored in the bottom of the second to go up 3-1. Wes Hatton was hit by an 0-2 pitch by Matt Miller. A wild pitch moved Hatton to second. Jean Almanzar’s singled got Hatton to third. A single by Giovinazzo scored Hatton for a 3-1 lead.

Miller regrouped to strike out the next three batters and kept the Kernels off the board. He also worked through a 1-2-3 third and a scoreless fourth to keep the Rattlers within striking distance.

Wisconsin would strike in the top of the fifth. Paciorek and Brownstein singled to start the frame. One out later, TJ Mittelstaedt tripled both runners home to tie the game. Mittelstaedt scored on high chopper to first off the bat of Nick Shaw. The throw to the plate was late and wild. That allowed Shaw to take second base. Greg Hopkins followed with an RBI double and the Rattlers were up 5-3.

Britt took over for Miller in the bottom of the fifth inning and gave up singles to the first two batters he faced. Then, he got a double play and a strikeout to end the frame. Britt kept the score at 5-3 for the rest of his outing.
The Rattlers reliever left the game with two outs and a runner at second in the bottom of the eighth inning. Marzec came on to get the final out of the eighth. Britt tossed 3-2/3 innings of shutout relief with four strikeouts.

Marzec worked a 1-2-3 ninth with a pair of strikeouts to end the game and pick up his third save of the season.
Wisconsin continues their road trip on Sunday evening at Beloit with a game against the Snappers. Maverick Lasker (0-1, 3.85) is scheduled to be the starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Beloit will counter with Adrian Salcedo (5-3, 3.03). Game time at Pohlman Field is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.
Nice enough bounce-back start from Miller. Though he only made it through four innings because of his pitch count (80 pitches/51 strikes), he fanned six. Paciorek and Brownstein each had two hits, Mittelstaedt drew a free pass to add to his triple, and Cody Hawn singled and walk. Man, how good has TJ Mittelstaedt been? He's already 23 though, so it's tough to see him as a real prospect yet, and if even Khris Davis can't get promoted, fat chance of seeing what Mittelstaedt can do at Brevard County until 2012.

Final: @Round Rock 9, Nashville 7 (12 innings)

Nashville Sounds

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Doug Deeds belted a walkoff, two-run homer in the bottom of the twelfth to give Round Rock a come-from-behind 9-7 win over the Nashville Sounds on Saturday evening at The Dell Diamond.

The blast, an opposite-field two-run shot to left, came against Sounds reliever Donovan Hand (1-4), who took the loss.

The heartbreaking loss was the seventh straight defeat in Round Rock for Nashville (37-45), which fell to 1-7 in extra-inning action this season.

It marked the second straight night that the Sounds lost a game in which they held a late lead. Round Rock trailed by three in the ninth and was down to its final strike before rehabbing catcher Mike Napoli lifted a wind-blown three-run homer to left off Daniel Herrera to send the game to extras.

Mark Hamburger (3-3) picked up a win for Round Rock for the second night in a row after authoring two hitless innings of relief work.

Outfielder Caleb Gindl powered the Nashville offense with a 3-for-4 effort that included a homer, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

PCL veteran Chad Tracy gave the Express an early advantage when he swatted a two-out, two-run homer to left off Sounds starter Amaury Rivas in the bottom of the first inning. Julio Borbon, who led off the frame by drawing a walk, also scored on the slugger's team-leading 17th longball of the season.

Round Rock increased its lead to 3-0 in the second with another two-out run, as Joey Butler scored on a Deeds double.

Gindl put the Sounds on the board in the third when he led off the inning by ripping his 10th homer of the season, a solo shot to right off Round Rock right-hander Eric Hurley that made it a 3-1 contest.

Brett Carroll extended his longest hitting streak of the year to 10 games and pulled Nashville back within a run when his fourth-inning single off Hurley brought home Eric Farris, who had opened the frame with a triple to right.

Napoli extended the home team's lead to 4-2 with a solo homer in the fifth before the Sounds rallied to bat around and take their first lead of the evening with a four-run sixth.

Carroll opened the frame with a walk before Erick Almonte and Taylor Green ripped back-to-back RBI doubles off Hurley to tie the contest at 4-4. After a sacrifice bunt move Green to third, the Sounds' third baseman raced home with the go-ahead run on Gindl's infield single to second, which chased Hurley from the game as Nashville jumped in front 5-4.

After Gindl stole second, Sounds catcher Wil Nieves greeted Express reliever Ryan Tucker with an RBI single back up the middle to make it a 6-4 Nashville advantage.

Nashville tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Edwin Maysonet led off with a double against Beau Jones and later scored on a double play groundout to up the visitors' lead to 7-4.

Mike McClendon was spectacular behind Rivas, retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced over three hitless innings.

Round Rock took immediate advantage of McClendon's departure in the ninth, rallying to tie the score at 7-7 against Herrera. With two on and two outs, Napoli was down to his final strike when he lifted a wind-blown homer over the wall in left, his second roundtripper of the night and a heartbreaker for Herrera, who suffered his second blown save.

The Sounds had a chance to jump back in front in the tenth, loading the bases against Cody Eppley with only one out. However, the Express right-hander induced an inning-ending double play grounder from Nieves to escape the jam unscathed. On the controversial play, Gindl was ruled to have run out of the basepaths and was called out without a tag from second baseman Matt Kata.

A pair of defensive gems by the Sounds in the bottom of the tenth kept the game going. With one out, Gindl threw out Esteban German at the plate from the left-center gap as he attempted to score from first on a Butler single. Later in the inning, with two runners aboard, right fielder Brandon Boggs made a diving catch of a sinking Deeds liner to end the inning.

After the Sounds went down in order in the top of the eleventh, Hand worked into and out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the inning, escaping with a scoreless frame by striking out ex-Sound Brad Nelson.

The teams wrap up the series with a 7:05 p.m. finale on Sunday evening. Nashville sends right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (3-4, 3.80) to the hill to face former Sounds left-hander Zach Jackson (6-2, 5.65).

Rivas did not pitch very well: 5 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 2 HR; however, I do appreciate the strikeouts. Excellent all-around game from Gindl, who also drew a walk. Today was his third three-hit game in the last six, as he comes out of his slump. Green also singled. The triple was Farris's only hit in six trips.

Nashville play-by-play

Nieves was ejected after his 10th-inning double play; presumably he thought he was safe at first as well as Gindl perhaps being safe at second.

No DSL box score yet; that'll have to wait until morning.

Quick note about the AZL Crew: Michael Schaub blew us (and the opposing team) away by fanning 11 in five innings in his first outing. Since then, he's pitched nine innings and struck out...two. You figure it out.

In progress: Maryvale Brewers over the baby D-Backs, 1-0, bottom of the 6th in Phoenix

Recently-turned 19-year-old RHP Michael Schaub (our "man of mystery" because we've yet to read a scouting report or feature story on him in the year he's been in the system) worked hard to get through five well-earned scoreless innings.

In Schaub's first outing on 6/22, he fanned 11 in five scoreless innings. He followed that up with a solid four-inning effort (2 ER) in which he fanned only one.

Tonight he spread out five hits and two walks in the five scoreless frames, and he didn't fan a batter, basically a bizarro image of that first effort.

He should be credited big-time tonight for bearing down in 112 degree "cloudy" heat (I think 115 is the Link Report record), as evidenced in his two final innings in particular -- kudos, young man...

AZL D-backs Bottom of the 4th

  • David Winfree grounds out, shortstop Renaldo Jenkins to first baseman Hitaniel Arias.
  • Wagner Mateo singles on a line drive to right fielder Steve Felix.
  • Pat Donahue singles on a ground ball to center fielder Malcolm Dowell. Wagner Mateo to 2nd.
  • Tyson Van Winkle walks. Wagner Mateo to 3rd. Pat Donahue to 2nd.

Final (game one): @DSL Mariners 4, DSL Brewers 1 (7 innings)

Final (game two): DSL Mariners 7, @DSL Brewers 0 (7 innings)

The Cerveceritos dropped to 4-7 against their division rivals with a pretty noncompetitive doubleheader sweep. They managed only six hits total on the day, including just one from a slacking Orlando Arcia and Esthervin Matos's first career base knock. A new name for the second straight day: 20-year-old catcher Leudi Otano went 0-3 in game two. Joel Dicent went the (six-inning) distance in game one, allowing four runs but posting a nice 6/2 K/BB; a three-run 3rd did him in. Angel "Ace" Ventura was hardly one in game two, allowing six runs and failing to making it out of the third innings. Young lefty Marcos Padilla tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless, no-hit baseball with a strikeout and a walk.

Arizona Box Score

Looks like the Maryvale Brewers are playing like Maryvale teams of nearly all years past, with last year's champs an aberration; we detailed the tale of two teenage pitchers, Michael Schaub and Joel Pierce, above; Cameron Garfield was 1-for-4 with two K's as he continues to rehab a knee injury; nine K's and zero walks for Brewer bats, not good; Steve Felix, normally a catcher / DH, played right field and homered for the squad's lone run; 22-year-old catcher Adam Weisenburger doubled and singled and has been sharp all along here in the early going...
