Baseball America's Ben Badler has a list of the top 40 projected signing bonuses for international players (plus scouting reports for subscribers). He also has a team-by-team breakdown, broken down into five tiers ("High Rollers", "Sleepers", "Opportunity Knocks", "The Price Is Right", and "Bargain Hunters"). The Brewers fall into the second-to-last category, described thusly: "These teams will make moves in Latin America, but don't expect any million-dollar fireworks. Low to mid-six figures is likely the ceiling for these teams, who will be opportunistic and pounce if asking prices for some of the top guys fall." Badler provides the following comment:

Two of Milwaukee's top international signings from 2010 are off to fast starts in the Dominican Summer League. Dominican righthander Milton Gomez, who signed for $350,000, has a 1.06 ERA in 17 innings, while Venezuelan shortstop Orlando Arcia (the younger brother of Twins outfielder Oswaldo Arcia) has been one of the league's best hitters. The Brewers are likely pursuing players for similar money again in 2011.

Well so far they've been sitting on their hands. Why are they so spending-conscious when it comes to raw, yet high-ceilinged, talent like the ones showcased in the international FA?

July 2 is the 1st day for signing international prospects.....the Yankees signed a pitcher for over $1 million.....and the Royals made a big splash by spending $3 million!!!!!

Texas topped that with a record deal. But it IS the first day. I am hoping the Brewers offer a significant amount for someone, but I find it unlikely with the draft talent we virtually have to sign.

Found some more information on Adalberto Mondesi in an article about the Royals big international signing. He is listed as a SS and the asking price is around 1 million.The Royals are pursueing him, too.

$2M signing bonus equates to about a middle-third 1st round pick (like our two this year), right?

No, much lower -- The Brewers signed him to a minor league contract in the offseason that included a reported $450,000 bonus.
