Well, Greinke has been rocked by the Yankees in his career so I can't say I didn't see this coming. Plus, that first inning probably didn't help his confidence.

I know this seems counterintuitive as he has struck out a ton of guys this season, but sometimes it seems like Greinke doesn't have a consistent out pitch. Either that or guys seem to foul away pitch after pitch with 2 strikes until he finally strikes them out. Thoughts?
When he misses with his FB, he misses up and over the heart of the plate. He spotted a couple nicely on the corners in the first, not so much here in the 2nd. He'll hang some sliders up in the zone over the middle of the plate as well from time to time. I wish I could have seen him pitch last week against the Rays. I think he just gets sloppy for whatever reason which is why he tends to give up runs in bunches, he might have a bit of Crazy-Z in him when things don't go his way. The first inning was definitely on the defense, but the 2nd was all on Zach. That pitch to Swisher for the home run was a thigh high 93 MPH FB on the outer half, that's a pretty good pitch to hit from a hitter's point of view and as such was crushed.

Estrada warming up already....wonder if greinke is hurt?

back to back 30 pitch innings can't be easy on the arm. i doubt he's hurt, but it could be a precautionary move to get him out of there before he does any damage (to his arm, that is).

The pieces we gave up don't look too good, but man does this guy stink.
Odorizzi's the bomb.

Cain is hitting .300/.865 in a non hitter's park.

If we can't get Greinke re-signed, and this level persists throughout one of his two seasons here, I think I'd take the assets we traded.

I think it's more likely that he's the kind of player who shines in Kansas City when no one is watching. I hope I'm wrong and this is just the Yankees being the Yankees. (I also hope he's not hurt).
You may run like Mays...

Bad mix of Greinke not having good location tonight and facing a team that doesn't swing at anything out of the zone. Rarely are you going to make mistakes against the Yankees and live to tell about it.

The first few runs were a bit of bad luck with Morgan falling down and runs scoring on weak groundouts, but the HR to Swisher was on a pitch left over the heart of the plate. Not a good pitch, even if it was a cheap Yankee Stadium HR that barely cleared the wall.

I don't understand why he was taken out. With only 6 guys in the bullpen, there is no reason to pull Greinke this early (unless he's hurt). Plus, Marcum is coming off two short starts. I know he said he's 100% now but you never know. If Greinke's not hurt, this is terrible bullpen management yet again.

Definitely didn't have his best stuff (or mediocre), but he really didn't make a terrible pitch or have anything hit hard until the Cano RBI single and then Swisher's HR (I guess the Granderson triple/error was technically hit hard). The Yankees just don't chase anything, so he had some uncharacteristic baserunners through walks. it sucks.

reading some of these IGT and i really miss the rants thread.......

you know players have bad games. there aren't too many greg maddux, steve carlton, or bob gibson types who seem to always be perfect. given how horrible the defense, managing, and bullpen have been we are lucky to be in 1st by at least 2 games. maybe we will wear out the yankees tonight when they score 20 and we can take the next few games.....

He's not hurt. It's purely a RR move. Not sure it makes a difference one way or another anyway, unless Marcum only goes 2 tomorrow.

Like I said, this is a definite possibility. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised at all if it happened. I hope I'm wrong.

I see this same sort of thing every year in the HS football playoffs. A team will come in to a 2nd round playoff game unbeaten, but they were the champ of a weak league and then they get a little puffed up over beating another weak team in the first round. Then they play a team that won a conference that plays strong football. They are down 21-0 before they know it and facing a running clock the entire second half.

If I was RR I'd have a little closed door meeting after this one.

After getting blown out twice by Boston and then laying this egg its time to light a little fire under these guys.

He has to be disgusted right now by this effort.

If you take out the Twins series we have been playing bad for 2 weeks and the Twins are basically a triple A team right now so sweeping them doesn't mean much.....

Baseball isn't like football. Even though the Yanks and Red Sox are better they can still be beaten(as the Pirates showed).
