Final: Quad Cities 8, @Wisconsin 3, ten innings

Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning on home runs by TJ Mittelstaedt and Tyler Roberts to tie the Quad Cities River Bandits 3-3. But, Quad Cities scored five times in the top of the tenth to defeat Wisconsin 8-3 Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field.

Jonathan Rodriguez put the River Bandits (42-30 overall, 2-1 second half) in front with a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning. Rodriguez has hit three homers and driven in nine runs against the Rattlers this season.

Quad Cities added a run in the top of the fifth. They had runners at the corners and no outs. Ronny Gil grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that let the runner from third score for a 3-0 lead.

Wisconsin (39-34, 1-2) got on the board against Quad Cities starting pitcher Trevor Rosenthal in the bottom of the fifth. Chad Stang and Roberts singled to start the frame. A sacrifice bunt by Franklin Romero moved the runners up a base. Nick Shaw sent Stang home with a grounder to short.

The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the ninth inning. Hector Corpas came out of the bullpen and became the fourth Quad Cities pitcher of the game. Mittlestaedt cracked an opposite field homer to left on the first pitch that Corpas threw and got the Rattlers to within 3-2. The home run was the seventh of the season for Mittelstaedt.

One out later, Roberts cracked his fourth home run of the season and the Rattlers had tied the game 3-3.

But, the River Bandits recovered quickly. Rattlers closer Greg Holle tossed a scoreless ninth, but gave up a double to Gil to start the tenth. Holle got the first out, but a wild pitch sent Gil to third and the Rattlers decided to walk Rodriguez to set up a potential inning ending double play.

Chris Edmondson spoiled the strategy by lining a 2-2 pitch from Holle down the right field line. Both Gil and Rodriguez scored to put the Bandits up 4-2.

Brian Garman relieved Holle and gave up an RBI single to Geoff Klein. Later in the frame, Klein would get caught in a rundown, but he would score when the ball popped free from Garman's glove as he applied the tag. The final run of the inning scored on a wild pitch for the 8-3 advantage.

Corpas walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the tenth, but retired the next three batters to close out the game.

Wisconsin welcomes the Peoria Chiefs to town on Monday night. Matt Miller (2-3, 4.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Matt Loosen (0-0, 0.00) is set to start for the Chiefs. Game time at Time Warner Cable field is 7:05pm. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting at 6:45pm.

Better than going down without a fight. Not to dog Roberts on a day he was quite good, but remember when he drew nine walks in May and I thought he might be adjusting to the MWL? Well, he's walked once in June. Mittelstaedt also walked, and Shaw and Cody Hawn also each had a hit and a walk. Chris Dennis and Mike Walker both went hitless. Del Howell started and allowed three runs in 4.2 innings with poor peripherals. Stosh Wawrzasek worked a scoreless inning of relief with a walk; his strikeout rate has come down significantly in June--he's posted a 3/8 K/BB in seven innings this month.

Final: Huntsville 10, @Carolina 6 (10 innings)

After losing in 10 innings yesterday, Huntsville turned the table today. The Stars got a run in the top of the 9th to knot things at six and then exploded for four runs in the 10th. Big days from the prospects atop the order: Lee Haydel was 3-5 with a double and a sac fly, Logan Schafer was 2-6 with a double, and Sean Halton was 2-4 with a double and two sac flies. Add in another from Matt Cline and the Stars tallied four sac flies on the day. The biggest day, though, came from the 7th spot, where Martin Maldonado rang up four hits, including a double. He's now hitting .301/.378/.399 for the Stars to go with his elite defense; I think he's your Brewers backup catcher next year. Andy Gonzalez chipped in with two hits and two walks. Erik Komatsu did not start but entered late and got on base both times he was up, on a single and a walk. As you could guess from his 1st inning that I highlighted earlier, Wily Peralta was not very good at all: 2.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 0 K, 59 pitches, 32 strikes. Though Lucas Luetge allowed two runs in an inning of work, Darren Byrd, Rob Wooten, and Jim Henderson were all impressive out of the bullpen, each throwing at least two innings of shutout ball. Wooten in particular deserves to be highlighted, discovering some of his old dominant stuff with four strikeouts in two frames.

Huntsville Top of the 9th
  • Logan Schafer doubles (4) on a fly ball to right fielder Felix Perez.
  • Sean Halton singles on a fly ball to left fielder Eric Campbell. Logan Schafer scores. Sean Halton out at 2nd, left fielder Eric Campbell to second baseman Henry Rodriguez.
  • Angel Gonzalez walks.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Hainley Statia replaces Robert Wooten.
  • Hainley Statia grounds into double play, third baseman Mike Costanzo to second baseman Henry Rodriguez to first baseman Neftali Soto. Angel Gonzalez out at 2nd.

Huntsville Top of the 10th
  • Sergio Miranda singles on a sharp line drive to right fielder Felix Perez.
  • Martin Maldonado singles on a sharp line drive to center fielder Denis Phipps. Sergio Miranda to 2nd.
  • With Matt Cline batting, wild pitch by Justin Freeman, Sergio Miranda to 3rd. Martin Maldonado to 2nd.
  • Matt Cline strikes out swinging.
  • Justin Freeman intentionally walks Erik Komatsu.
  • Lee Haydel singles on a line drive to right fielder Felix Perez. Sergio Miranda scores. Martin Maldonado scores. Erik Komatsu to 3rd. Lee Haydel to 2nd. Throwing error by right fielder Felix Perez.
  • Logan Schafer singles on a ground ball to center fielder Denis Phipps. Erik Komatsu scores. Lee Haydel to 3rd.
  • Sean Halton out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Denis Phipps. Lee Haydel scores. Logan Schafer to 2nd on the throw.
  • Angel Gonzalez grounds out, second baseman Henry Rodriguez to first baseman Neftali Soto.

Schafer has ZERO extra base hits this season before tonight's double. Haydel has 10 out of 79 hits. Komatsu has 16 out of 70. Halton with 26 out of 77. Wilson has 18 out of 68.

Scooter was hitting over .300 his last ten games before tonight's. Unfortunately, his OPB and SLG were practical mirror images of is batting average. Very nice to see him go yard.

Pretty sure D'Vo is just waiting for is favorite month (August) to come around. He is "Mr. August" if he has another giant late summer month.

I think you're looking at his BC line. That was his fourth double at Huntsville, plus two triples. Not much power (or patience--only seven walks), to be sure.

Final: @Brevard County 4, Tampa 3

Frank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. -- Scooter Gennett was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and Tyler Thornburg was victorious in his Manatees debut, as Brevard County topped the Tampa Yankees 4-3 on Sunday evening at Space Coast Stadium in front of 2,366 fans.

In the second, the Manatees (2-0 second half, 29-43 overall) got on the board first with a two-run single by Khris Davis that scored both Kentrail Davis and Hunter Morris.

Thornburg would allow his only run of the night to the Yankees (2-2, 39-34) in the third when Emerson Landoni scored on Kelvin Castro's two-out single as the 'Tees lead was cut to 2-1.

In five innings of work, Thornburg allowed just one run on two hits and one hit by pitch. He struck out six, didn't walk a batter and retired 15 of the 18 Yankees that he faced.

Brevard County added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth, on a two-out two-run homer by Gennett, to make it a 4-1 game.

R.J. Seidel relieved Thornburg and threw a scoreless sixth, but Tampa would get one run back against Adrian Rosario in the seventh on a RBI ground out by Abraham Almonte.

Bradley Blanks struck out two in a scoreless eighth and Santo Manzanillo had to work for his ninth save of the year as he allowed a run and let the tying run get to third in the ninth, but the 'Tees held on for a 4-3 win.

Gennett's four hits gave him his seventh multi-hit game of June. He is hitting .333 (28-of-84) this month and has reached base safely in 19 of 20 games.

The Manatees will look to continue their hot start of the second half in the second game of a three-game set against the Yankees on Monday night.

Another pitcher will be making his Brevard County debut as Austin Ross will take the hill for the 'Tees. Ross was 6-3 with a 3.25 ERA in 13 games with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the first half of 2011.

The Yankees will counter with Sean Black (4-6, 6.10).

Awesome to see Thornburg's dominance continue without missing a beat. Brandon Revels reports that both hits Thornburg allowed were bloops. One of Gennett's other hits was a double--go go Gennett slugging percentage! After an execrable .212/.240/.248 May, he's up to .333/.371/.476 in June. Khris Davis has been good all year, of course, and was 2-3 again today. Kentrail Davis singled once in four trips and stole his 16th base, and Morris doubled. D'Vontrey Richardson was back in the lineup and picked up a hit. Shawn Zarraga hasn't played since the 20th.
The Sea Cows made two outs at second base in the 1st inning:

Brevard County Bottom of the 1st
  • Scooter Gennett singles on a line drive to center fielder Abraham Almonte. Scooter Gennett out at 2nd, center fielder Abraham Almonte to shortstop Kelvin Castro.
  • Kentrail Davis singles on a line drive to right fielder Taylor Grote.
  • Hunter Morris doubles (20) on a fly ball to left fielder Zoilo Almonte. Kentrail Davis to 3rd.
  • Khristopher Davis singles on a line drive to left fielder Zoilo Almonte. Kentrail Davis scores. Hunter Morris scores. Khristopher Davis out at 2nd on the throw, left fielder Zoilo Almonte to catcher JR Murphy to second baseman Emerson Landoni.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard flies out to left fielder Zoilo Almonte.

Final: @Nashville 9, New Orleans 2

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds hung a 9-2 loss on the New Orleans Zephyrs on Sunday night at Greer Stadium in the second game of a four-game series.

Winners of four of its last five overall, Nashville (35-42) has outscored New Orleans, 95-36, in the teams' 14 meetings so far this season, winning 10 of those contests.

Nine different players posed a hit in the victory, highlighted by homers from Eric Farris and Mat Gamel.

Sounds starter Amaury Rivas (6-7) allowed two runs on eight hits while fanning six in six innings pitched. Rivas has tossed four quality starts in all four of his outings against New Orleans this season, going 4-0 with a 1.73 ERA (5er/26.0ip) and 16 strikeouts.

New Orleans plated their first run in the top of the first inning on a bases loaded groundout.

Nashville answered back by sending 10 batters to dish and plating four runs in the bottom of the first. New Orleans Tom Koehler committed a fielding error and issued two walks to quickly load the bases. Gamel drove in the first run with an infield groundout followed by a softly hit RBI double by Jordan Brown. Third baseman Zelous Wheeler then hit a two-run single that concluded the Sounds rally at 4-1.

The Zephyrs hit consecutive doubles in the top of the fourth inning to score their other run. Chris Aguila led off the frame with a double to left field and scored as Ozzie Martinez nailed a two-bagger to left.

The Sounds extended their lead to 6-2 in the next frame. After Mike Rivera singled to center, Farris belted his fourth homer of the season over the left field wall. The two-run shot was his first home run since May 24 at Tacoma.

Nashville went ahead at 9-2 in the bottom of the seventh. After consecutive singles by Farris and Brett Carroll, Gamel tattooed a three-run bomb off of Mariano Gomez onto Chestnut Street. Moving Gamel into sole possession of fifth place for homers in the PCL, the blast was his team-leading 18th of the season and put him into a tie with Olmedo Saenz (1994-96) for 10th place in Sounds franchise history. It was the third straight game that Gamel went yard, also a Sounds high for 2011.

The Nashville bullpen was dominant on the evening. Mike McClendon pitched a scoreless seventh. Takashi Saito pitched a perfect eighth on eight pitches, allowing a groundout, fly out, and a pop out. Zach Braddock fanned one to end the game in a scoreless ninth.

Koehler (5-6) gave up six runs (two earned) on six hits in six innings.

The Sounds and Zephyrs continue their series with Monday night's 7:05 pm contest at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (2-4, 4.08) takes the mound against New Orleans left-hander Sean West (2-3, 7.94).

Rivas walked just one and threw 99 pitches and 66 strikes. For the second time in three starts, his ground-ball rate was down (5/4 GO/FO today), but his strikeouts and general effectiveness were way up. Toby watched the game and reports that Rivas threw more breaking balls than in the past but that the quality of them hasn't improved much. Nice to see Gamel, Saito, and Braddock, all of whom could be with the big club soon, have good games. Don Money's oracle told him to bat Caleb Gindl leadoff today, and it worked: Gindl was 0-2 but drew three walks. Taylor Green was 1-4 with a walk. Brandon Boggs, sad about all this promotion talk not including him and Mark Kotsay's general terribleness, had a pinch-hit single. Wheeler is hitting .271/.340/.438 in 15 games with the Sounds this year.

Sessile tweeted a reminder about the increasing frequency of this occurance, partially prompted by Zelous Wheeler's re-emergence. Without a DH, you have to play Wheeler, Farris and Green over Edwin Maysonet as part of the infield roulette.
I keep forgetting to note it in in the Link Report after I've noted it on Twitter. Champagne problems.

Final: Billings 7, @Helena 1

Can't Win 'em All

By Nicholas Allen

The Helena Brewers, previously unbeaten at Kindrick Legion Field in

Helena, dropped the series finale Sunday 7-1 to the Billings Mustangs.

The Mustangs scored in six of the first seven innings of the game as the

Brewers pitching staff allowed the lead-off hitter to reach base in

each of the first seven frames. Brandon Williamson (1-1) allowed four

leadoff hits and one hit batsman and reliever Seth Lintz gave up singles

to start the sixth and seventh. Jacob Barnes finally ended the streak,

following with two perfect innings.

Stalin Gerson (2-0) went six strong innings in which he allowed just one

run on three hits, striking out five Brewers hitters. Carlos Contreras

and Ronald Pinkard combined to shut down Helena the rest of the way. The

only blemish for Billings was Yadiel Rivera's RBI single in the bottom

of the fourth to score Adrian Williams from second base. Rivera's

opposite-field single cut the lead to 4-1 with two outs before Jason

Rogers flied out to end the threat. The Brewers could only muster one

baserunner the rest of the way.

Helena welcomes the Great Falls Voyagers to town for a two-game set Monday.

Helena Box Score

The 2011 20th round righthander Williamson wasn't overpowering, but still hasn't walked a batter in hist first 12 professional innings. He also picked a runner off first in the third inning.

Rivera, Rogers, & Williams got the Brewers' only hits in the contest -- two doubles & a single. Rogers doubled with two outs in the bottom of the first inning, but didn't score. Robby Garvey, Michael Nemeth ('11, 21st rd.), Joey Paciorek, & John Dishon drew a walk apiece.

Helena Play-by-Play

Williamson had an eventful third:

Billings Top of the 3rd
  • Kurtis Muller hit by pitch.
  • With Dayne Read batting, Kurtis Muller steals (2) 2nd base.
  • With Dayne Read batting, wild pitch by Brandon Williamson, Kurtis Muller to 3rd.
  • Dayne Read singles on a ground ball to left fielder John Dishon. Kurtis Muller scores.
  • With Kyle Waldrop batting, Brandon Williamson picks off Dayne Read at 1st on throw to Jason Rogers.
  • Kyle Waldrop strikes out swinging.
  • Sean Buckley strikes out swinging.

Helena's lone run:

Helena Bottom of the 5th
  • Kyle Dhanani pops out to shortstop Cristobal Rodriguez.
  • John Dishon strikes out swinging.
  • Adrian Williams singles on a line drive to right fielder Kyle Waldrop.
  • Robert Garvey walks. Adrian Williams to 2nd.

Final: @AZL Angels 10, AZL Brewers 2

AZL Box Score

The Angels routed the Brewers with two three-run innings & four one-run innings. The Brewers had a hard time figuring out Angels pitching, as 13 outs came via the strikeout.

Starter Jose Oviedo lasted just one inning; no injury note given at the time of substitution. He allowed a single, a triple, & one run. Relievers Stephen Peterson & Mike Francisco ('11 48th rd.) struggled. Mitch Conner ('11 36th-rd.) threw the final two innings, allowing a solo HR & striking out three.

Jose Garcia's RBI triple in the second & Hitaniel Arias's RBI single in the sixth accounted for the Brewers' only runs. Leadoff man & centerfielder Ruben Ozuna went 0-4 with three strikeouts; he'd had four multi-hit games in a row to kick off his AZL season. 2011 9th-rounder Malcolm Dowell & Dominican-born Andres Martinez both had singles. Kevin Berard & Brandon Macias ('11 UDFA) drew one walk each; catcher Jimmie Pharr ('11 UDFA) walked twice.

AZL Play-by-Play

Looks like the Garcia triple might've been an interesting play:

AZL Brewers Top of the 2nd

  • Hitaniel Arias grounds out, second baseman Brian Hernandez to first baseman Eric Oliver.
  • Jimmie Pharr walks.
  • Jalen Harris strikes out swinging.
  • Jose R. Garcia triples (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Chevy Clarke, deflected by right fielder Andrew Workman. Jimmie Pharr scores.
  • Malcolm Dowell grounds out, shortstop Wendell Soto to first baseman Eric Oliver.

I'd have to think that if the ball hit Workman's glove, but was a misplay, he'd have gotten the error. So a missed diving or running catch, maybe?

I think thath is change IS an out pitch. But a change isn't a breaking ball, so I'm not totally sure what you're driving at here.
