Brewers get no respect

T B0NE 10
In terms of publicity and respect from opposing fan bases, the Crew is already getting notice far beyond what has been typical over the last decade or so. It hardly requires a WS ring to get that kind of respect - if we win the division, or even make the playoffs as a wildcard it will only increase. Add in the general acknowledgement across baseball that we're still young and likely to get better? What more do you want?

The Brewers will be fine.

Baseball is a game of streaks, or maybe a better term, stretches. Yes, the Cubs are on a nice stretch now -- but it will come to an end. And maybe better yet, they'll have a losing stretch to reciprocate the current.

Additionally, the Crew still has a 3.5 game lead. If this were the end of the season, we would be saying they nearly 'owned' the NL Central (granted, it's not that good anyway). We were all just pampered with a 8/9 game lead for most of the season.

Holding onto the division by a couple of games is the reality of it all. Additionally, the Brewers will not miss Sheets like they did last year (I predict a winning record in his misses). And when he comes back, he will be the missing link that launches us through September into October.

Also, the hitting will bounce back just like it will probably take one more dip this season -- its all part of the ride.

Excellent point. I like the idea of saying stretches rather than streaks. It seems to be a much more accurate description.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I think the problem on the national scale with Sheet's injury is that most people don't krealize that we're replacing him with Yo, or they just don't know what Yo brings to the table. Plus there's the big city bias that favors the cubs. The media is going to talk more about the team who gives them more viewers. That's why with all the great divisional races in the NL, the only one ESPN is talking about is in the AL East, where the yankee's are still 7 back.

-the Cubs have evaporated a 10 game lead down to 3.5 in a short period of time

The Cubs were never more than 8.5 games back, which was as recently as June 23. So, they've made up 5 games in a little under a month. Very good, obviously, but they had to go 15-5 to do it.

-the Brewers have been playing mediocre lately

They are 20-11 since June 13th and 5-2 since the all star break. There was a slight rough patch in between but it's not that the Brewers haven't done well lately but rather the Cubs are playing out of their minds, IMO.

-to top off the weak play, the Brewers lose their ace for a month and their CF indefinitely

Did I miss news on Hall? I assumed there was a good chance of seeing him later next week.

-the Cubs are healthy and sizzling hot right now

And a big, fat market.

rluzinski,

I love your ability to strategically shred just about any argument. I'm new to this site this year so I can't imagine what you did in the past but seeing you dismantle arguments (including mine on occasion) is wildly entertaining.

I think there's a 59% chance that you shred this post!

Not to sidetrack further, but Peeyourpantsforthebrewers.com had a pretty funny exchange today that reminded me of rluz and people on the board sometimes:

This was an email chain between my younger brother and way-older cousin. See how the cousin trumps the 14 year-old's McNamara-like numbers and stats with cold, hard "gut" feeling.

14 year-old: If the Brewers play 500 baseball the rest of the year, the Cubs have to play how we have played the whole season. They have to play 70 percentage points better than us to tie us. We've been playing 570 baseball all season while the Cubs have been playing 522 baseball, and that's in large part due to them getting really hot in the last month, but how long will that last? I can't see them keeping up that pace the rest of the year.

Way-older cousin: No matter how fast you run up the terminal, you'll never catch a plane that has already taken off.

I'm surprised Ohio didn't vote us yes after we supported their Indians.

Ohio is also home of another team in our division. I don't think we'll get much love from Ohio, Missouri, Pennsylvania, or Texas to a certain degree. Not because they think that the Cubs will overtake us, but because they have their own teams in our division that would love to see the Brewers get into a wicked slump.

Seems like we're assuming here that the voters are watching the Cubs as the team to jump into first place, but if I was a fan in St. Louis, I wouldn't mind seeing the Brewers drop a pile of games in a row...and couldn't care less about about the Cubs.

If I had Braun's pee in my fridge I'd tell everybody.

I'm not trying to shred anything, other than the correction about the Cubs' largest deficit, the rest is just my opinion. Heck, he probably more accurately describes why the Brewers are underrated than anything I wrote.

No matter how fast you run up the terminal, you'll never catch a plane that has already taken off.

Did the Brewers already clinch the Central or am I supposed to assume an identical win percentage for the Brewers and Cubs the rest of the way? I think the way older brother might have gotten the short end of the genetic stick. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
