I'm ready for a Kris Davis promotion now that the first half is over.

Everyone except Nichols would agree. Earned a promotion last year, Nichols denied, earned one this year and still Nichols has yet to show him love..... Free Khris Davis!!

Final: DSL Mariners 2, @DSL Brewers 1

MH highlighted in the intro how close the two teams are in record, but after beating the Marineritos in their first three meetings of the year, the Cerveceritos have now lost to their division rivals five straight times. Despite the outcome, righty starter Jorge Ortega was quite impressive, going all nine innings while allowing the two runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out six, walking none, and hitting one. The Brewers had nine hits, but they were not evenly distributed; four players had two each: Orlando Arcia, Yonki Hernandez, Dionis Hinojosa, and Deivi Mejia. Jose Pena and Raul Mondesi were each 0-4, and as expected after leaving yesterday's game following two HBPs, Elvis Rubio did not play. Based on the fact that this was a full nine-inning game, I'm going to assume there was no doubleheader.

Hinojosa temporarily prevented the Mariners from taking a 2-0 lead in the 3rd:

DSL Mariners Top of the 3rd
  • Diego Mina doubles (1) on a line drive to right fielder Jose Pena.
  • Ketel Marte flies out to center fielder Dionis Hinojosa. Diego Mina to 3rd.
  • Noe Berro reaches on a fielder's choice, fielded by second baseman Alejandro Mendoza. Diego Mina scores.
  • Janelfry Zorrilla singles on a fly ball to right fielder Jose Pena. Noe Berro to 3rd.
  • Axel Wel flies into double play, center fielder Dionis Hinojosa to catcher Natanael Mejia. Noe Berro out at home on the throw.

...but was himself thrown out at home trying to get the Brewers on the board in the 5th:

DSL Brewers Bottom of the 5th
  • Natanael Mejia strikes out swinging.
  • Dionis Hinojosa singles on a ground ball to center fielder Janelfry Zorrilla.
  • Yonki Hernandez singles on a line drive to right fielder Gabriel Guerrero. Dionis Hinojosa to 2nd.
  • Alejandro Mendoza flies out to right fielder Gabriel Guerrero.
  • Orlando Arcia singles on a line drive to left fielder Estarlyn Morales. Dionis Hinojosa out at home on the throw, left fielder Estarlyn Morales to catcher Alexander Capriata.

Just what you want when you're down by a run in the bottom of the 9th:

DSL Brewers Bottom of the 9th
  • Natanael Mejia walks.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Francisco Castillo replaces Natanael Mejia.
  • With Dionis Hinojosa batting, Francisco Castillo picked off and caught stealing 2nd base, pitcher Oliver Garcia to first baseman Axel Wel.
  • Dionis Hinojosa strikes out swinging.
  • Yonki Hernandez strikes out swinging.

I guess Roenicke-ball is trickling down the organizational ladder.

Final: @Carolina 3, Huntsville 2

Wily Peralta was the schedule starter, but because of Peralta's All-Star Game appearance, Michael Fiers bumped it instead. Fiers turned in a vintage Zack Greinke line: 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, 2 HR, 79 pitches, 53 strikes. Homers are proving to be a bit of a problem for Fiers--he's allowed six now in 47.1 innings for the Stars. Erik Komatsu had three of Huntsville's seven hits. Logan Schafer and Lee Haydel each had a hit, with Haydel's being a triple, as did Martin Maldonado, who's quietly been really hot at the plate. I'd like to see Maldonado starting regularly at Nashville; not sure what Wil Nieves really offers besides "better than George Kottaras" defense, and you'd get that and much more from Maldonado anyway. Sean Halton was 0-4.
Down 3-0 in the 7th, the Stars got two back, but it could have been so much more:

Huntsville Top of the 7th
  • Steffan Wilson singles on a soft line drive to left fielder Eric Campbell.
  • Erik Komatsu singles on a sharp ground ball to center fielder Denis Phipps. Steffan Wilson to 2nd.
  • Angel Gonzalez walks. Steffan Wilson to 3rd. Erik Komatsu to 2nd.
  • Martin Maldonado singles on a sharp ground ball to left fielder Eric Campbell, deflected by third baseman Mike Costanzo. Steffan Wilson scores. Erik Komatsu to 3rd. Angel Gonzalez to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Justin Freeman replaces Matt Klinker, batting 9th.
  • Hainley Statia grounds into a force out, second baseman Cody Puckett to shortstop Henry Rodriguez. Erik Komatsu scores. Angel Gonzalez to 3rd. Martin Maldonado out at 2nd. Hainley Statia to 1st.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Sergio Miranda replaces Michael Fiers.
  • Sergio Miranda reaches on a fielder's choice out, third baseman Mike Costanzo to catcher Yasmani Grandal to third baseman Mike Costanzo to pitcher Justin Freeman. Angel Gonzalez out at home. Hainley Statia to 3rd on the throw.
  • Pitcher Change: James Adkins replaces Justin Freeman, batting 9th.
  • Logan Schafer grounds into a force out, fielded by shortstop Henry Rodriguez. Sergio Miranda out at 2nd.

Final: @Brevard County 4, Lakeland 2

Frank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. -- The Brevard County Manatees opened the second half of the season with a 4-2 win over the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium.

The Manatees (1-0 second half, 28-43 overall) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first when Kentrail Davis hit a solo homer and then later in the inning Khris Davis drove in Hunter Morris with a RBI double.

Sean McCraw would made it a 3-0 game in the second with a solo homer of his own.

Lakeland (0-1, 36-35) cut it to a 3-2 game with a run in both the fourth and fifth and subsequently chased Manatees starting pitcher Nick Bucci from the game. Bucci went 4 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out two.

Brevard County would get one run back in the bottom of the fifth as McCraw led the inning off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Prince and then scored on a RBI single to left by Scooter Gennett.

Jon Pokorny picked up the win in relief of Bucci as he threw 2 1/3 shutout innings. Santo Manzanillo earned his eight save of the season by throwing a scoreless eighth and ninth.

Both Gennett and McCraw had two hits and one RBI each.

The Manatees and Flying Tigers will continue their three-game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m.

Brevard County's starting pitcher has yet to be determined, while Lakeland will send Cole Nelson (3-9, 5.17) to the mound.

Nelson has been roughed up in three starts against the 'Tees as he is 0-2 with an 8.10 ERA against Brevard County this season.

Bucci's been struggling lately; this was his first start since the ten-run disaster on the 13th. In their combined 4.1 innings, neither Pokorny nor Manzanillo walked anyone (Pokorny did hit a batter); Pokorny fanned two and Manzanillo one. Maybe, a year later, Kentrail Davis is finally getting the hang of the Florida State League? He's been hot, and it's not been just a bunch of singles, either. Morris and D'Vontrey Richardson (welcome back, D'Vo!) each had a hit. Shawn Zarraga missed his third straight game.

Bucci's evening ended with his control wavering:

Lakeland Top of the 5th
  • Julio Rodriguez singles on a ground ball to center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson.
  • Brent Wyatt grounds into a force out, first baseman Hunter Morris to shortstop Josh Prince. Julio Rodriguez out at 2nd. Brent Wyatt to 1st.
  • William Bergolla walks. Brent Wyatt to 2nd.
  • Tony Plagman singles on a pop up to shortstop Josh Prince. Brent Wyatt to 3rd. William Bergolla to 2nd.
  • Jordan Lennerton pops out to second baseman Scooter Gennett on the infield fly rule.
  • Wade Gaynor walks. Brent Wyatt scores. William Bergolla to 3rd. Tony Plagman to 2nd.
  • Pitcher Change: Jonathan Pokorny replaces Nicholas Bucci.
  • Avisail Garcia flies out to right fielder Kentrail Davis.

Final: Omaha 8, @Nashville 2

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Omaha Storm Chasers continued their recent dominance of the Sounds on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium, handing Nashville an 8-2 loss.
The Sounds (32-42) have lost nine of their 11 meetings with the division-rival Storm Chasers this season.

Omaha took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when former Sound Lorenzo Cain tripled off the center field wall then scored when Lance Zawadzki crushed a 1-0 Josh Butler offering over the wall in right-center for a two-run homer, his fifth roundtripper of the year. The home run extended Zawadzki's hitting streak to 14 games for the Storm Chasers.

Caleb Gindl put the Sounds on the board in the fifth when he led off the inning with a massive solo homer to dead center which cleared the 24-foot high batter's eye. The blast, which came against Omaha starter Vin Mazzaro, was the outfielder's eighth of the year.

The Sounds tied the score at 2-2 in the sixth when Edwin Maysonet's two-out single to center off Mazzaro plated Mat Gamel, who earlier reached on a one-out single.

The Storm Chasers quickly regained the lead with a four-run outburst against Butler in the top of the seventh, taking a 6-2 advantage.

Catcher Cody Clark (2-for-4) led off the Omaha seventh by roping a line-drive homer over the left field wall to give the visitors a 3-2 advantage. The big fly was his third of the year. Later in the frame, shortstop Mike Aviles belted his fifth homer of the year, a solo shot to left.

The next two Storm Chasers scored in unearned fashion later in the frame after Maysonet was unable to handle a two-out Kila Ka'aihue grounder at short.

Omaha added two runs in the ninth against Sounds reliever Zach Braddock. Aviles led off by drawing a walk, moved to third on a Giovatella single, and scored on a Braddock wild pitch. Giovatella later scored on a Cain sacrifice fly to bring the score to its final 8-2 standing.

Mazzaro (4-0) earned the victory with a quality start for Omaha, holding the Sounds to two runs on six hits while striking out six batters over his six frames of action.

Blake Johnson worked the final three innings in scoreless fashion for the Storm Chasers, allowing only one hit, to earn his first save of the year.

Butler (4-5) drew the loss after giving up six runs (four earned) on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings. He walked one batter and struck out five in his 102-pitch effort.

Milwaukee Brewers reliever Takashi Saito worked a clean eighth inning for the Sounds, throwing 11 pitches (eight for strikes) with one strikeout.

The teams wrap up the five-game series with a 7:05 p.m. meeting on Friday. Left-hander Chase Wright (4-4, 5.65) will toe the rubber for the Sounds to take on Omaha right-hander Kevin Pucetas (4-3, 5.18).

At least Butler only walked one, I guess. At least Braddock struck out two, I guess. At least...Jeff Suppan didn't shut the, out again, I guess. Nice to see the slumping Gindl continue to demonstrate surprising pop from his "smurf"-y frame. Brandon Boggs had two hits out of the leadoff spot (not that the lineup made any sense, as per usual). Taylor Green was 0-4.

Final: AZL Brewers 10, @AZL Indians 6

AZL Box Score

The Brewers knocked out three home runs in support of soon-to-be 20 year old Jeffrey Saba (6'2, 152), who notched a win in his first start of the AZL season. Saba posted a 3.90 ERA over twelve starts for the 2011 DSL Cerveceritos to earn his way stateside. He allowed four hits, two runs (one earned), one walk, & two strikeouts over five innings en route to the win.

Catcher Jimmie Pharr (I believe he was an UDFA) knocked out a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, Ruben Ozuna hit one in the second inning, & Steve Felix ('10 UDFA) added a third in the fifth. Pharr finished 2-3 with a walk, Ozuna 2-4 with a walk, & Felix 2-4 with three RBI. Second baseman Kevin Berard was 1-4 with a walk. 19th round pick Renaldo Jenkins, a shortstop out of Whitewater H.S. in Fayetteville, GA, went 1-1 with a walk & two runs scored. Andres Martinez, a 19-yo via the DSL, tripled in the 8th inning & drove in Pharr to give the Brewers the 10-6 final margin. UDFA Brandon Macias (Univ. of Kansas) hit third, played both shortstop & third base, and finished 2-5 with a triple & two runs scored.

Ozuna has kicked his AZL season off with a .533 OBP & .846 SLG. He'll turn 20 in August, and has demonstrated solid contact ability & plate discipline since his debut in the DSL in 2010. The lefty-swinger, currently listed at 6'2", 180, certainly has room to grow & and is a solid prospect.

Relievers Michael Francisco & Mitchell Conner combined to shut down the Indians over the final two innings. LH Francisco ('11 48th rounder) allowed one hit & struck out one; RH Conner ('11 36th rounder) whiffed two & also allowed one hit.

Final: Helena 6, @Missoula 5 (12 innings)

Helena Box Score

The Osprey took a 3-0 lead into the top of the 4th inning, but the Brewers bats ignited in the 4th for four runs, and held up for the win. They beat Missoula on a 12th-inning RBI single from Max Walla, after Jason Rogers ('10 32d-rounder) reached on an error to lead off the inning. Rogers was advanced to second base by a sac bunt, and went to third on a wild pitch to Walla. After driving in Rogers, Walla was caught stealing second base for the second out of the 12th inning.

The main offensive play came in the top of the fourth inning, when leftfielder John Dishon sent a ball into the left-center gap that wound up being good for a 2-RBI inside-the-park-homer. Shortstop Yadiel Rivera finished 2-6 with a solo HR. Rogers went 2-5; Walla added a double to his RBI single, & catcher Parker Berberet ('11 25th round) finished 2-3 with a double & two walks. Kyle Dhanani went 1-2 with a double & an RBI.

Starter & 2011 15th-rounder Andrew Moye allowed five hits & three earned runs over three innings, while striking out four & walking one. Extra duty: Brewers edge Osprey after Missoula forces extra innings

by Nick Lockridge of the Missoulian

The Helena Brewers beat the Missoula Osprey 6-5 in a Pioneer League baseball game that lasted 12 innings and more than four hours on Thursday at Ogren-Allegiance Park.

Helena’s Max Walla drove in Jason Rogers with the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning to give the defending league champions the one-run advantage. The two squads, who played a 12-inning affair in Monday’s season opener, have played four games this season and each one was decided by one run.

Alan Williams ended up getting the win for the Brewers (3-1), who lead the North Division at this early stage.

Missoula’s Chris Ellison sent the game into extras. He tied the game at 5-5 with one swing of the bat, taking the first pitch he saw from Helena reliever Jacob Barnes deep to right field for a solo home run to lead off the ninth.

Ellison was a defensive substitution for the Osprey, who had three players exit the game because of injury. Ellison, who took Ty Linton’s spot in left field, nearly played the hero in the bottom of the 11th when he doubled off the batter’s eye in center. Jeremia Gomez, running from first, was gunned down at home plate on the relay. Gomez lay on the ground for several moments after receiving a high tag on the play.

Gomez remained in the game, but it wasn’t the first scary moment of the night for Missoula.

Linton and Westley Moss ran into each other while going for a ball in the gap in the fourth inning. Moss dove, but missed the ball, and hit his head on Linton’s knee. The Brewers’ John Dishon was credited with a three-run inside-the-park home run on the play. Both Osprey players were examined before leaving the field. No report on their condition was available at press time.

O’s second baseman Matt Jensen injured his right leg in a collision with Helena first baseman Jason Rogers, who weighs more than 250 pounds, while running through the bag on a RBI single in .the first frame.

Ryan Court hit a two-run home run in the third to give Missoula a 3-0 lead.
