Two computer questions

DHonks

1) Why can't I share printers easily in my home network?

One is connected to a computer running XP Pro, the other is connected to Vista Home Premium. I have both locally selected to share. But when I click on the other computers in Network connections (or network neighborhood), it prompts me for a password to access the computer (I never set a password), and it won't allow me to search for the printer

2) how can I convert a .tif file to .rtf, .txt, or .pdf? I need it on one of these formats for a job application

Go to Zamzar.com. All you have to do is upload your file, select what you want to convert it to, and they'll email you the converted file. They can handle all those file types.

I love that site, no downloading or anything. Its real easy and quick.

Changing .tif to .txt or .rtf requires OCR (optical character recognition) software. Sam's link probably provides that. Realize that if you're doing OCR, you will need to proofread to make sure characters were converted correctly.

An option for .pdf is to find a Mac. The ability to convert any document to .pdf is built into OS X's print dialog boxes.

EDIT: Also consider calling your scanner's tech support. You might not have installed something you have sitting on a disk somewhere. Or the company web site might have something you can download.

I didn't examine Sam's link, but that looks to be the best short-term solution. Long-term, you should be looking into getting your scanner to handle more formats, anyway.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.
