Ortiz lives in WI in the offseason. He met his wife while playing up there. He's often seen at Packers games. I'm partially amazed because of the cold winter brings around here, but he's spent a lot of his career around the midwest. Funny what love will do to a guy. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

If you claim ESPN is just doing this segment for ratings, fine, but those ratings fuel the sponsers who pay ESPN, who in turn gives it back to less fortunate people.

Well -- They are going to do the DUI and Elijah Dukes stories -- I think it fair journalism to focus on the good things that some of these players do as well. Negative stories probably sell just as well as sappy tear jerkers. If you have one, you probably should have the other.

ESPN is in the entertainment BUSINESS, no question about that. That doesn't mean they have this feature exclusively for ratings. If it was all about ratings, they would have Erin Andrews at the SC desk wearing little more than a smile. Countless other gimmicks they could create.

Personally, I think it's a solid feature to show athletes can be more than money grubbing, law breaking, trash talking thugs. In fact, who knows...maybe other pro athletes watch these features and it makes a positive impact on them.

Anyhow, I'm not naive enough to believe ESPN doesn't consider ratings in every decision they make. In the end, does the motive really matter? If I give to a charity just to make myself feel good, the charity still gets the money- so what's the difference?

Finally, why have the feature at all? Just like any news broadcast, SC has moved away from true news long, long ago. (Which is why I rarely watch much of it anymore either.) If I want to know every detail about the Yankees, or hear the latest BS trade rumor I'll tune in to SC.
